THE MARWARI PONY The exquisite horse is renowned for endurance and exceptional boldness.

EXPLORE

T

he Marwari is thought to have been reared around the 12th century AD where it immediately turned into a most loved of the military family, the Rathores. The Rathores managed the Marwari area from their capital city of Jodhpur, west of Jaipur. The British supported their own Arab descent ponies and related the Marwari with the “Indian standard”. Marwari ponies declined during the British time. By the mid-1990s, an administration study assessed that about 500 to 600 remained. This set off a battle to spare the Marwari, the Indigenous Indian pony breed. Associations were formed to spare the Marwari from annihilation, with rearing, examination and instruction programs, both with the government and private sector help. Supplies of Marwari are on the ascent again, with better endurance too. The variety was prepared to carry on with incredible boldness in fight conditions, and its attractive bearing are exceptionally esteemed today.

EXPLORE

MARWARI CHARACTERISTICS The main physical quality of the Marwari is the internal bending ears, apparently nearly meeting at the tips. The beginning of this striking appearance is obscure; however, it is unmistakable in instances of early Mughal artworks. The Marwaris usually include different hues like Black, Dark Bay, Bay, Chestnut, Palomino, Buckskin, Piebald, Skewbald and Gray; their height is in the range of 154-164 cm; they have a stretched head; thin neck and unmistakable shrinks; long backs with an articulated croup; thin legs and amazingly hard hooves; a tail that is commonly set high. The variety is valued for its striking presence. The stride is smoother in appearance and generous. Click to read more

T

he soothing equine flair is quite something to appreciate. Researcher Peter Grey said: “We have almost forgotten how strange a thing it is that so huge, powerful and intelligent an animal as a horse should allow another, and far more feeble animal, to ride upon its back”. Author John Steinbeck said: “A man on a horse is spiritually, as well physically bigger than a man on foot.” Horses indeed lend us the wings we lack. LAPOLO brings together two fables of unbridled hope and devotion featuring horses in their surreal healing composure-one from Indianapolis and another from Kentucky. Cheryl Miller and her daughter Dawn, inspired by joy, love and success of a summer riding program for children with disabilities, founded Agape in 1986 which is a Greek word that means “Unconditional love”, but it was after Dawn’s tragic death when Cheryl decided to start a full-time therapeutic riding centre. More than a hundred miles away, in Kentucky, Cynthia Nell Ward, owner and director Divine Equine, shares similar views. She says: “Volunteering at a therapeutic riding centre, hearing the stories from riders and parents, I knew I had to open a centre in my community.” 14

CONVERSATIONS

Cynthia proudly says: “When a rider comes here, they learn how to care for someone. They learn they have more than they thought they had. They find strength in riding. When you’re riding a horse, you are using all your muscles, using your cognitive ability to move and think at the same time. How to think ahead, how to control your anger, how to learn to release the stress, how to understand that while on the horse for one hour all your worries are melted away. It strengthens the core of your body, energizes your awareness, and motivates you to learn more.”

has worked for both, providing an appropriate atmosphere. The youth of Indonesia is actively involved in the royal sport, with maximum participation in international and national events. The determination with an aim to develop the game across the archipelago is commendable. The nation is gearing up, not leaving any stone unturned, in making Polo a tradition and a lifestyle.

P

olo is well known for spreading its charms across the globe. Indonesia too has been successful in proliferating the sport throughout the country. The sport holds an integral position in the history of Indonesia. The sport started in the 1930s in the country. The Batavia Polo Club in 1937, founded by Dutch nationalists, became the key breakthrough milestone in the starting point of the sport. However, it was after an interval of a long period, in the mid-1990s, that modern Polo was initiated by Hashim Djojohadikusumo and his brother Prabowo Subianto, who established the Nusantara Polo Club, as the revived version of the Batavia Polo Club. And it was his initiation that brought back the sport in a big way in Indonesia. Further development of the club took place in 2007. Governed by the Indonesian Polo Association, the Indonesian Polo Team represented Indonesia in the 2007 South East Asian Games. Indonesia has been involved with the sport in many other ways, like, most of the canes of a polo mallet come from Indonesia. The Nusantara Polo Club, the only polo club in Indonesia, provides world-class facility, with professionally trained horses and extraordinary players. Some top names in the Indoenisan Polo fraternity include Prabowo Subianto, Nicolas Curto, Iman Kusumo and Daninya Zakir. Indonesia has promoted the sport widely. Constant participation in various events, constructing worldclass facilities and collaborations with other nations to broaden the view of Polo in Indonesia has been the prime intent. INTRIGUE

IF MUSIC BE THE FOOD OF LOVE, PLAY ON! Recent studies have found that music is beneď€ cial for horses. Though the study is mostly experiment-based and nascent, it offers alternatives to trainers who are interested in understanding the horses rather than subjugating them with brute force.

23

INTRIGUE

K

endra Bruning, founder of GameCows, shares some significant insights: “I once worked with a ‘spirited’ horse whose barn name was Voodoo. My mentor and I spent ages trying to get the colt to respond to training and become more even-tempered. But he constantly seemed to be on edge. He once spooked and sprinted under a half-closed garage door with me still on the back. Another time, he stopped short at a jump. Unfortunately, I did not; I kept moving forward, straight over his head and into the ground. The stunt sent me to the hospital and put me in a neck brace.” When her instructor was at a loss, finally she decided to try out music therapy for Voodoo and a couple of other young horses she was struggling with. The horses and she listened to a lot of Chopin in the following weeks.

The changes weren’t immediate, but Voodoo did begin to steadily improve as the experiment progressed. He didn’t react as strongly to unexpected stimuli, and eventually started making jumps again. “I do think that the music had a gradual yet positive effect on him. It’s like we had reached a chasm in his training that we couldn’t navigate. Music provided a bridge across and, once past this obstacle, he grew in leaps and bounds.” Now who knew a horse would have an ear for Chopin! She believes that “classical music without drastic crescendos seems to be ideal. Some people swear by folk, country, or soft rock, but I’ve found that what many of us would consider ‘elevator music’ as the most calming for music therapy. I’ve just taken a liking to Chopin.” She says: “It takes at least three months before a trainer can perceive the full benefits of music training in their horses.” Bruning says that listening to music with the horse forges a bond, that is important in communication during training. “Horses, like other intelligent domesticated animals, can sense tension in people around them, especially those who care for them. I believe, without a doubt, that listening to music together can strengthen bonds between a horse and its trainer/caretaker. If a melody puts you at ease, your horse will sense that peace within you and respond in kind.”

24

INTRIGUE

The effect of music on horses go beyond calming the mind. It can be used in training. “While a lot of studies have been conducted with race horses and music therapy, the theory behind music training should be applicable to all sports horses. Theories suggest that music can drown out outside sounds that may otherwise cause stress to the horse. Less stress results in better performance, especially if music is used for more than a month in training.” What is its potential in mainstream training? “I’ve found music therapy to be beneficial in training, but it takes a bit of patience to implement properly. I think it would be wonderful if it were

to become more mainstream, but I’m not sure all trainers are willing to wait for the positive results of music therapy to manifest.” She recommends it for trainers who are exploring non-violent methods of training. “I think trainers considering the psychology of their horses better recognize the benefits from music therapy because it is so tied to the horse’s mental state. Music training has a huge impact on the behaviour of a horse, which is something a trainer with knowledge of horse psychology would be better able to gauge.” Click to read more

T

he hotel on the beautiful Amalfi Coast had just turned half a century year old and the year after that while savouring the Sirenuse lifestyle, they simply added more to the celebration of this grand anniversary. “We decided to work around the sensations of being on the terrace of Le Sirenuse in summer, evoking these sensations through a fragrance based on notes inspired by the smell of terracotta heated by the sun, the terracotta of the hand-painted tiles of the terrace, and the vases and amphorae all around it,” added Sebastian.

Eau d’Italie gives the sensation of luxury and well-being at Le Sirenuse encapsulated in a bellissima bottle. Successively, Eau d’Italie gave its name also to a whole line of fragrances inspired by Italy, each of them a way of containing something very Italian – a place, a sensation, a tradition – in a fragrance. In collaboration with perfumers Daphne Bugey Nathalie Lorson, Amandine Clerc Marie and Olivier Cresp, the brand plans to go further. Each label has its own delineation. The fragrance “Don’t cry for me” echoes the name of a very famous song associated with Argentina, and at the

same time it speaks of an independent personality. “You don’t have to cry for me, I am wearing a fragrance that takes care of me”, such are the vibes the musk fragrance exudes. For another fragrance, “By any other name”, the note is taken from Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Juliet tells Romeo “a rose would smell as sweet by any other name”, and since this is a fragrance based on rose, it’s a very contemporary way of representing “this is a rose, but to understand it, you have to discover it by yourself’. This way your fragrance becomes truly yours, your scented alter ego. Click to read more
