A word from our new patron by Hugh Fraser, Lapwing patron When Sue Chesworth asked me to become a patron of Lapwing I was delighted to accept the position and to be associated with such a fine organisation. Over the last couple of years I have assisted as a volunteer on the Lapwing Media Project at Aldeburgh Music and appeared in two films, written and shot by students. While involved in these projects I witnessed the extraordinary progress and development in confidence, and the ability to co-operate as part of a group, that can take place as students work with the Lapwing coaches and tutors. The Lapwing Graduation Day in June was a joyous occasion attended by several former students who have completed Lapwing learning programmes and are now pursuing various courses in full time further education. These graduates addressed the audience, expressing their gratitude and appreciation for the education they received at Lapwing and gave ample testament to the effectiveness of the programmes they had been provided with. The work that Lapwing does is vitally important and the experience and expertise the team have built up is invaluable and unique in the field of complex needs education. I would urge anyone who is in a position to encourage or support Lapwing in its various activities to do so and to help in any way that they can.

positive learning in Suffolk

We have a new home New office On 4 August we made the move from IP-City in Ipswich to The Square in Martlesham, giving us the opportunity to try another area of Suffolk! Welcome to Martlesham In July our new neighbours Anglia Care Trust threw an al fresco bash (right) to celebrate their own move from Ipswich earlier this year. BBC Radio Suffolk’s Stephen Foster and The Mayor of Ipswich led the proceedings and the event proved the perfect opportunity to meet Anglia Care Trust and our other neighbours, Home Start and Disability Advisory Service. New website address We also have a new home on the internet which reflects our commitment to learning. www.lapwingeducation.com

Our first undergraduate We always love hearing from former students but it was especially thrilling to hear that Fred (left), has been accepted at The University of Bedfordshire to study a BA (Hons) degree course in Television Production. Fred has ADHD and Autism and missed a lot of school due to frustration and communication challenges. It’s a first for Lapwing and an enormous achievement for Fred. We invited Fred to speak at our Graduation Day and he took part in an inspiring Q and A session in front of 140 guests. Well done Fred!

Graduation Day 2014

Lapwing student Jesse Day

Student Robert Grant

New patron Hugh

The culmination of the academic year and celebration of our students’ achievements, Lapwing’s Graduation Day gives an opportunity for all to come together in celebration. This year we invited past and present students to take to the stage in a live ‘Question and Answer’ session. Director of Development and Education, Sophy Jones, interviewed Fred, Emile, Troy and James about the progress they had made at Lapwing and how it has helped them achieve their potential. Thanks to Ryan Insurance for kindly sponsoring the event which took place at our old offices at IP-City in Ipswich. The old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words is especially true when it comes to capturing the spirit of our Graduation Day. So we were over the moon when professional photographer Jeremy Hennell-James agreed to give his time to shoot the event. We are incredibly grateful for this generous contribution to Lapwing.

Supermarket sweep As well as raising £211, a ‘can collection’ in Sainsbury’s in Ipswich town centre attracted attention from the press, shoppers and Radio Felixstowe thanks to a surprise appearance from new patron Hugh Fraser. Four enthusiastic volunteers from Ryan Insurance took turns on the tins (below left) and CEO Sue (below right) also did a shift. Our Community Matters donation from Waitrose also arrived this term, so we have another £179 to help fund our educational programmes.

While working with Stoke High School students, Lapwing and John Lewis arranged a Dragons’ Den Day. Twelve Y10 students from the school enjoyed a ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour of John Lewis and Waitrose and were hugely inspired by their highly trained staff. Students were briefed to choose a product from the shelves, break into small groups and create a business plan before presenting their pitch to peers and the dragons. The experience instilled self-belief and improved persuasive and analytical skills, resulting in inspired and motivated young people. Thanks John Lewis Partnerships!

Talkback BBC Radio Suffolk Shortly before our Graduation Day our patron, Hugh Fraser, and Chief Executive, Sue Chesworth were invited onto BBC Radio Suffolk to meet presenter Lesley Dolphin and be interviewed on her legendary couch! You can listen to the interview here: https://soundcloud.com/lapwingeducation Radio Felixstowe On a roll following her interview on BBC Suffolk, Sue happily accepted an invitation from Radio Felixstowe to chat about Lapwing and to reveal her favourite tune! The station also featured us as their charity of the month, with patron Hugh recording a superb advert for them to play. We are also hoping that some of our students will participate in some work experience at the station.

Gippeswyk Educational Trust Two of our students - Selina Green (16) and Jake Roberts (also 16) - require additional funding to continue their Lapwing education. Selina has a real talent for music, and having achieved a Bronze Arts Award, Lapwing strongly believes that she will benefit hugely from progressing to a Silver Arts Award, working with Noise Solution. Jake Roberts has a passion for fashion design. He needs access to theatrical performances and fashion shows to enhance his experience and learning in this field. A grant of £500 for each student from the Gippeswyk Education Trust is making this all possible.

Handing it to Emile We’re so proud that student Emile Eno-Daynes has completed his Manual Handling certificate as part of his work at waste management company FCC Environment. Emile has wanted to work at FCC since he was a young child, so it’s marvellous to see this ambitious young man achieve his goals.
