Architecture at Estudio Mariscal

New H&M flagship store in Barcelona by Estudio Mariscal

2008

The new H&M flagship store is a global Project where Estudio Mariscal has been in charge of the architecture, interior, furniture and lightning design, as much as the signage and visual identity. We have created a shocking space full of thrill and surprise where people can feel comfortable and the garments find its place. Design at the service of the store. A fresh pop language lives together with the majestic spirit of the building. The contrast between the ancient and the new style is one of the challenges we have to tackle and will become one of the guidelines through the project. We cross the entrance through a led screen tunnel that led us from the street to this new H&M space. A big explosion of light and color that becomes a virtual store front, a dynamic sign that lacks on the faรงade.

The recovered central atrium gives air and light to the space. Here, the upper glass dome and specially the metal stairs enhance the vertical axis connecting all the floors, from bottom to top. The stair going up looks solid and imperial. It seems to be waiting Marilyn Monroe to walk down its steps. The other going down to the basement loses it symmetry and takes the appearance of a playful Escher labyrinth.

All the elements are removable. The interior walls are covered by a metallic puzzle of drilled panels that overlaps the existent architecture not hiding it completely. It’s a modular and flexible system that never loses its rhythm.

04

2008

The design of the furniture shows the same language of drilled metal panels and colored glass. Both are hard and cold materials that underline the contrast with the original material of the building, stone and wood.

05

2008

We have had completely freedom through all the process that has come up as a design lab in which Estudio Mariscal has investigated, experiment and played. Not only with the design of the different elements but also with the way in which garments could be displayed or the experience that the customers may have inside a store such as this.

Mariscal - Swarte exhibition at FAD, Barcelona

2010

The exhibition at FAD (Fostering Arts & Design) puts together the work of the designer Javier Mariscal and his colleague and Dutch cartoonist Joost Swarte. Both jump from one discipline to another participating in comic illustration, product or interior design, architecture and in Mariscal’s case even sculpture. Concept design: The only element we find is a long broken wall that crosses the room from side to side. Placed just at the center it sorts out the space and displays all the exhibit material. Sketches, drawings and pictures are directly printed on the surface of the cardboard panels that cover the structure of the wall. At the points where the high of the wall goes down we placed the three showcases lightened by Ptolomeo lamps.

OCT Happy Harbour, Shenzhen, China

Signage, Environment design and architecture for a new Shopping and leisure area.

2010

Estudio Mariscal was asked to participate on the project focusing on the environment design that could transmit a new atmosphere and give character to a new commercial space at the city of Shenzhen. We have created a bright and fresh language that reflects the playful spirit of Happy Harbour and lives together with the architecture.

01

2010

The site is divided in two areas of mixed uses where we can find a commercial mall, cultural facilities, residential buildings, offices, hotels or even an Imax theatre. Bars, cafeterias and restaurants are also part of the offer. The visual identity proposed by Estudio Mariscal tries to fit together all the diversity of activities through a unique language clear and legible at first sight that will be the guideline through interior and exterior spaces.

On the other side we design three interventions halfway from architecture to sculpture that will be placed at strategic points inside the commercial mall. These will appear as reference points, wow effects that get the attention of the customers, give rhythm and a different approach to the shopping tour.

02

The textile faรงade

2010

A big lattice of textile leaves and wood stripes covers this glass faรงade. It filters the natural light and at the same time creates a game of colorful patterns and shadows. The artificial greenery will become a recognizable image inside and outside the commercial mall.

The central atrium

2010

The leading role at the central Atrium is for the hanged sculpture. A group of textile leaves made with metal tubes and fabrics that fall down and give a sense of lightness and movement. The same language seeking for the coherence in all the interventions.

The signage

2010

Soft lines, bright colors and organic shapes are the criteria that design the new signage system. This group of sculptural totems orients the customers and display the information but at the same time create the perfect atmosphere for the new identity.
