A new look for “Les Glòries” commercial mall in Barcelona
01
Precedent history: few comments about the site Glorias square and its surroundings is one of the hot spots now in Barcelona experiencing lots of changes in the last years and probably on of the most important challenges the city of Barcelona has to tackle today. The opening of Diagonal Av, the creation of the 22@ District, the new Gran Via Av. are some of the projects that are transforming the character of this node within the city. Landscape is changing, vitality is raising up and therefore new public is arriving. The Glòrias commercial mall has to adapt itself to the new circumstances, get back its urban character and become part of the city as much as part of the neighbor.
The briefing: what’s the client asking for? A new visual identity for the commercial mall that reflects the urban spirit and this air of renovation. That identity will be developed through graphics and singular elements, which are part of a new environment design in line with the architecture proposal.
02
The concept Estudio Mariscal sets out a new urban landscape based on a conceptual language. Colors and textures overlap the abstract lines that jump from the graphics to the space giving shape to totems, canopies, sculptures, floor tiles and all the group of singular elements.

04
The alphabet: The existence of a guideline and the use of this new alphabet in the design of all the elements will give coherence to the whole project. Graphics and architecture are working together, both part of the same objectives and sharing the same sources

The big mural on the floor:
07
The floor tiles:
The floor spreads out as a big black&white mural. The drawing twists and appears pixelated due to the hexagonal pattern of the tile. This geometric piece, made in concrete, remind us to the modernist floors in la Pedrera and Paseo de Gracia as much as the classic floor tile (“panot) that we can see at all the sidewalks in Barcelona. This new floor tile is one of the elements that contribute in the creation of the new identity also enhancing the urban spirit of the place.
08
The sculptures: Placed at strategic points such as the entrances, the central square or the crossing point of the to avenues. Are key elements of the project, a clear example of the abstract language transformed from the graphics to volume in the space.

01. Gran Via A big colorful lattice that hanged from the ceiling goes under the Olivetti building and leads you inside the area.

02. the Totem
A tall figure that grows from the basement and rise up 22 m from the street level. A slender tree of vertical lines and crossing branches punctuated by colorful and glossy dots, that reflect light and shadows.
11
03. la Plaza A big dome that overlaps the central square outlined by metal lines in different colors. This virtual ceiling will become the stage where all the leisure activities of the mall will take place.
12
04. Diagonal
A big jumping colour line that push you inside the entrance in a zigzag pathway. It’s the principal gate that welcomes you from Diagonal Av. and the metal arch that holds the new sign of Glòrias.
13
05. Ciutat de Granada
This entrance is covered by a light structure of slim chopstics in different colors. A group of crossing metal tubes that adorn and show you the way to “Glòries”.
14
Other singular elements: The signage
shows the same language as the rest of the elements. A code of lines and color shapes, halfway between graphics and sculpture.
15
The canopies and the marquee at the theatre are part of a whole intervention at the street that hosts the bars and cafeterias as well as the theatre. Same language but different sizes adapting themselves to the diverse functions required.

The little canopies of the terraces grow covering the entrance of the Theatre. That’s the big marquee, a forest of slim metal tubs that hold a glass roof. A transparent surface that seem to float over your head.

The planter-bench and the metal trees:
This multifunctional elements play with the shape of a tree growing at different points of the area and thus creating a surprising environment. The metal parasol filter the light and project nice shadows over the benches at the rest areas.

This project is still being developed. Some of the elements displayed have already been constructed but the rest could be subjected to possible changes due to construction requirements.
