(1913/14 - 1985, Indonesian)
Djuang Playing Ukulele (and Me) 1970; oil on canvas; 90 x 70 cm signed with the artist's monogram and dated on upper right signed again on middle right Rp 450.000.000 - 600.000.000 Literature: Amir Sidharta, VISIBLE SOUL, Museum S. Sudjojono & Canna Gallery, Indonesia, 2006. Illustrated in color, p. 14
"I was running a temperature when my father painted me. That I remember vividly. I was grounded, and all I could do was playing with my ukulele ... " – Djuang
To Sudjojono his family was his world. Sudjojono's marriage to his forever muse, Rose Pandanwangi, was blessed with the births of their three daughters: Pandan, Djuang and Maya. Rose together with these three girls were Sudjojono's sanctuary as well as his endless source of inspiration and strength. His paintings and drawings depicting Rose and the girls throughout his life read like a diary. In Pasar Minggu, where his house and studio were located, the stars truly never stopped shinning for him. Every piece on his family has a story, sometimes only Sudjojono knew it. Djuang was often referred to by his parents as "CRYSTAL". It is their term of endearment for her because Djuang was the more sensitive and less talkative of the three girls. Hence, subconsiously, every now and then Sudjojono would worry more about little Djuang. The present lot was painted while Sudjojono was taking care of Djuang who was down with fever. In this painting Sudjojono showed his masterly skill in capturing Djuang's mood and body language at that time. It is a typical Sudjojono at his very best. But what makes this painting "unusual and special" is the fact that Sudjojono later added himself on the background. He included himself in the picture as if to say, "Djuang, I am here to look after you. And you will be fine, dear‌". Furthermore, he added the iron bed that he made himself on the top right hand corner of the painting, a kind of symbolism to show strength. By adding himself and the bed into the composition, Sudjojono wanted to pull the viewers in further in exploring the painting. He wanted us to feel his love for little Djuang. Sudjojono was a great painter, a great artist. That everybody knows. But more importantly, he was also a very caring and loving father. The present lot is a testament to it. DJUANG PLAYING UKULELE (AND ME) is probably the "only" painting of his children in which the artist appears on the background to express his fatherly love and care for his child.
