A story about friendship DOODLE CONCEPT

HOW WE APPLY IT

A doodle is a relatively simple drawing made while a person’s attention is otherwise occupied.

In occasion of the Internation Day of Friendship, we developed a Google Doodle that can work not only as a gif but also as an interactive game.

Doodle or Doodles may also refer to: Doodle, a virtual pet in the video game Toontown Online Doodles (comics), a children’s activity panel/comic strip featuring Professor Doodles

INTERNATIONAL DAY OF FRIENDSHIP

Friendship Day (also International Friendship Day or Friend’s Day) is a day in several countries for celebrating friendship, it was first proposed in 1958 in Paraguay as the “International Friendship Day”. Friendship Day celebrations occur on different dates in different countries. The first World Friendship Day was proposed for 30 July in 1958, by the World Friendship Crusade.

TARGET Google is a browser for everyone, it is the most used in the world and it makes accessible to anyone any kind of info. To define, so, a target that could be interested in a Google Doodle, considering all the users, means that our potential average audience can be from an age of around 18 till an age of around 35. This is because from the target derived

from the Google Users (which are from around 18 till circa 50) we detected who can actually be interested in playing an interactive game through a Doodle.

War zone. The setting is in a trench of the Italian faction in the Alps. A wide valley surrounded by a forest with a river, visibile far in the background. The atmosphere reflects the spirit: rainy and dark. The colors are those of the land, the water and the metal of weapons.

The house is immersed in the rural, wooded nature in the place where there were once the trenches. The subsidences used during the war are still present here and there. Set in the World War II, the story reflects the juvenile inexperience of the new leaders. The now left families are still bittersweet memories. Nobody can share the whole story of their lives, but just fragments and moments. The affection for the dog seems to be the only glimpse of emotionality. There’s no need to talk but just to listen the perpetual and unceasing sound of nature.

The only question, present in each glance is when they’ll be able to end it all and come back home to their families. They only think about staying alive and keep on going.

Set in the modern days. The story tells the moments of leisure of a child who is used to play with his imagination to create adventures. His friend and play companion is a puppy, young and cheerful ready to be a trusted ally.

The aim is to live like a big adventure a normal play day, made unique by all the imaginary elements, before being called back in real life, but his mum. A journey towards discovery, always in company, to get the hidden places where the adventures can take place. Overcome enemies, protect friends, unveil the unknown, these are the daily tasks and challenges in the imaginary world.

Cadets, ready to save even the life of a lone puppy. They’re frightened by the unknown and pressing shadow of the enemy ready to get closer to attack. The relationship among the young soldiers is constantly under check from the generals of the army, ready to scold their submitted. The rules are apparently infinite with tiny gaps of freedom, hidden from the borders.

The sterility of war is present in the total absence of dialogues. Nature describes perfectly the condition of the protagonists. The sounds of the forest, the rain and the tackles are the only audible. The more energetic and sudden actions are still all the army norms that have to be respected, with the only exception of the behavior towards the dog, who is fed, covered.

Soldiers don’t communicate if not with the eyes. They can move in mass, with shared movements, as if mediated by a common fulcrum. The eyes of the narration are those of the dog ready to be the careful commentator of the story.

In the game there are no rules, apparently. The child lives a normal family contest, with all of its norms and daily routines, even if in the narration we never meet adult figures. Through the games and the narrations developed by the child for his own fun we can live the fantasy world he creates, always including his puppy friend.

The only voice is given through laughs and amazement. The deepest dialogues are given by nature, mutating according to the imaginary world. The movements of the two characters are he only source of behavioral expression. A child in the full age of discovery and his dog who perfectly follows him in his world.

CHRONOS // TIME World War II Today (2020)

The child is the age of discovery, He doesn’t really know what the meaning of “interaction” is. He gives for granted that everything follows his mind scheme, culminating in the imaginary world. The dog, on the other hand, more quietly follows these first attempts of interaction keeping himself as the observer, ready to support his play mate.

Soldier storyword

THE DOG The dog is present in all the stories, he has the aim to impersonate the user communicating the archetypes of the cape.

General sound The background sound for the soldier story is the song “Warg” by Recondite. It’s a Dystopian song. It starts with a series of beats that remind us of the heartbeats and the shots of the guns at the same time. The rhythm becomes more and more pressing and is enriched with sounds that make the atmosphere tense. The dissonance recalls the suffocating atmosphere of the war camps. Instead the background sound for the child story is the song “Tie In” by Recondite. It is a song of the same musician so that the sound could seem similar in some cases. This song is more cheerful and playful.

Scene 1 It’s getting more and more clouded while the soldiers walks, he feels the first drops of rain and wears the cape, he then arrives to the trench and gets himself comfortable. While it’s raining and he’s well covered he sees a little puppy all wet getting closer, he tries to think of how he could help the poor animal in this bad weather and looking around he realizes that his cape is big enough to protect the both of them, so he scoops the dog under his protective cover and saves him.

Scene 2 The storm intensifies and the water starts to become an element of discomfort for the mobility and the practicality of the actions but, since the cape is asymmetrical, the soldier manages to push back the longer side of the cape so that it can work as a gutter and make the rain slide on it, keeping the soldier and the puppy safe and warm.

Scene 3 After some time spent in the camp the first need necessities were starting to lack so a group of soldiers go to the river to get some water. The role of the soldier and the puppy, in the group, was the one to be outposts to scour the place, they use binoculars to see as further as possible and they get a glimpse, far away, of men wearing ashen capes, enemies. The color made it clear right away, after having communicated it to the group they turn back towards the camp.

Scene 4 During the night the soldier is asked to look after the camp, he has to work as a night guard. It was a long day for him and he could fall asleep any moment. As soon as he’s about to give up and close his eyes the dog helps him stay awake barking and keeping him occupied playing and jumping.

Scene 1 It starts to rain and the soldier wears the cape. He sees a little puppy all wet, he tries to think of how he could help the poor animal in this bad weather and he realizes that his cape is big enough to protect.

He is in the trench and uses the cape to get protected from the rain, he also meets the dog who will be loyal till the final scene

“Warg” by Recondite + when the storm intensifies, the noise of the rain begins to be heard. Also the breath of the soldier is heard, as he becomes more fatigued because of the cold.

Scene 3 Field between the trench and the river. Riverside. The rain becomes milder

He and the dog move from the trench to the river where they find the enemies, thanks to the color of the cape they’re wearing, so they run back towards the camp

Child storyword General sound It is a song of the same musician so that the sound could seem similar in some cases. This song is more cheerful and playful. The harmony follows the child as he moves from reality to the fantastic dimension. According to the story he is following, the user will hear the respective song. Despite this, the choice of the two specific songs has been made so that it is not perceived as a clear separation, but as a change of scene harmonious and enclosed in the same narrative. There is no narrating voice or the voice of the characters. The sound component, in addition to the two songs, is implemented and made evocative by the inclusion of sounds of nature that are linked to the events of the story. In the doodle of google, that is the starting point, the song in the background is “Warg”.

Scene 1 In front of the house of the child there are some subsidences caused by what’s left of the trenches once used there during the war, he sits there and lies the cape on the floor as if it was a hut. He then starts reading a book about dinosaurs, with the sun high up in the sky and the cool summer breeze. The dog lies sleepy next to him. The reading becomes so immersive that the environment around him becomes a mirror of what he’s reading, welcoming huge creatures, shadow of the prehistoric animals. The sky gets darker and all of a sudden it turns red and full of scorching meteors heading towards the earth.

Scene 2 Tea time! The round table is made of what’s left of the trunk of an old tree that has been chopped. The cape is now used as a cloth, too big for the trunk to the point that a side with its flaps almost touches the grass underneath. Around the table for the tea time there’s the child, the dog and some stuffed animals seated on cushions and chairs. The child takes the teapot, that was placed in the hole made by the collar in the cape, to pour some of the drink in the dog’s bowl, but before managing to put it back where it slips from his hands and spills some liquid on the cape, that slides on the floor right away thanks to the long side that almost touched the floor. Looking up in the sky there are colorful strings of paper to decorate everything from above.

Scene 3 The scene opens with the child and the dog that are playing chasing each other near the river. They’re playing hide and seek. Some swallows dance and move in the sky. In their imaginary world the swallows start to dance more and getting closer and closer, both the child and the dog are frightened by them and they try to dissappear by camouflaging under the cape, as soon as they’re covered, indeed, they’re safe from the danger.

Scene 4 The child finds a box near his house. He tries to step on it and in the meanwhile he wraps himself up in in the cape as if It was the cape of a superhero. A breezy wind moves the cape. The child raises his arm just like a superhero would do, he tip toes and the skies starts to turn, as in simulating the speediness of the moment. He now has to jump off the box and all of a sudden it seems too high, the dog is ready to help him, he sits under the box and, as a little step, helps the child to get off.


Child summary

Environment Garden of the house. The weather is sunny but the sky turns into a rain of meteore.

Scene 1 The child uses the cape as a hut where he and his puppy friend can get covered from the obstacles made up by the child in his imaginary world.

Sound “Tie In” by Recondite + pages turning + rain of meteore + laughs

Scene 2 Garden of the house. The weather is sunny and in the sky there are some paper banners that decorate and move the sky by painting it.

The cape is now used as a table cloth and the function of the gutter is discovered when the child spills some tea on it.

“Tie In” by Recondite + the music decreases and the steps on the grass of the child and the dog start to be heard + teapot falling

Scene 3 Riverbank. A flock of swallows decorate the sky making shapes and movements in the background.

The child and the dog play near the river, they imagine to be attacked by swallows and they camouflage under the cape to escape.

“Tie In” by Recondite + birds + at the end of the scene you can hear the laughter of the characters.

Scene 4 Outside the house.

The child and the dog play with the cape simulating superheroes on top of a box. When the child is frightened to get off the box the dog helps him out.

Instagram post On instagram we developed a grid that can be as intuitive as possible, stories could be more direct, we also used captions and hashtags to in order to communicate both stories, the interactivity between them strengthen the meaning. The pictures are uploaded on a slide show and the values of the Day of Friendship we chose a series of quotes so that, by scrolling right, the full layout of the scene can be visible. to use in the middle grid so that the connection between the two
