“Île-aux-Marins” The frontier island Outside the port of Saint-Pierre, Île-aux-Marins, buffeted by winds and waves, long witnessed the fate of a community of fishermen and pioneers. The remnants of the intense human activity undertaken by the inhabitants, who often faced harsh living conditions, can be observed by visiting the wharf, the cemetery, the drying grounds, the gardens and the school. Printemps 1816, quelques centaines d’hommes et de femmes, survivants de la dernière expulsion, débarquent sur les côtes de l’archipel. Il faut tout reconstruire. Les conflits franco-anglais qui ont marqué la vie des habitants depuis plus de 100 ans viennent de prendre fin. Désormais le drapeau français y claque au vent pour longtemps. Construire, pêcher, commercer… On y vit, s’y installe avec espoir. Le travail est dur, le quotidien souvent difficile, mais les efforts ne sont pas vains : la seconde moitié du 19e siècle connait un fort développement économique et démographique. Par la suite, au 20e siècle, les aléas de l’industrie de la pêche vont confronter la population à des défis d’un genre nouveau.
At spring 1816 a few hundred men and women who survived the last expulsion land on the coasts of the archipelago. They must rebuild everything. For more than 100 years lives of inhabitants were affected by Anglo-French wars, but it just came to an end. French flag now flaps in the wind for long. Building, fishing, trading… They live and settle with hope. Work is hard and daily life is often harsh, but efforts are not vain : the second half of 19th century witnesses a significant economic and demographic development. During the 20th century the vicissitudes / downs of fishery challenges the population in a new way.

Le sol de l’Anse à Henry à Saint-Pierre a livré des vestiges préhistoriques qui font de ce lieu un site archéologique exceptionnel : il est le site de culture arctique le plus méridional connu, mais également l’unique site arctique sur l’ensemble du territoire français.
The soil of Saint-Pierre’s “Anse à Henry” has revealed prehistoric finds which make the place an exceptional archeological site: not only is it the southernmost site of arctic culture ever discovered, but it is also the only arctic site on French soil.
Ces vestiges témoignent d’une préhistoire remontant à près de 5 000 ans ! À travers les outils en pierre présentés, vous découvrirez les populations amérindiennes et paléoesquimaudes qui ont fréquenté le territoire avant la venue des européens.
These finds bear witness to a prehistory nearly 5 000 years old! Through the stone tools on display, you will discover the American Indian and PalaeoEskimo populations which stayed on the islands before the arrival of the Europeans.

« La guillotine »
“The guillotine”
La guillotine est l'instrument emblématique utilisé pour l'exécution de la peine capitale en France, notamment lors de la Révolution française. Les bois de justice n'ont servi qu'une seule fois dans l'Archipel, le 24 août 1889. La guillotine conservée et présentée au rez-de-chaussée de l'Arche arriva à Saint-Pierre un an plus tard et ne fut jamais utilisée. Il s'agit d'une occasion unique de voir une véritable guillotine, encore dans sa condition d'origine.
The guillotine is a beheading device used to carry out death penalty in France, in particular during the French Revolution. “The timbers of justice” were only used once in the islands, on August 24th, 1889. The guillotine exhibited in L’Arche arrived one year later and was never used once. It is a unique opportunity to see a real guillotine that is still in its original state.
