By John Welborne The Historic Gilmore Adobe was the star of the annual Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical Society (WSHPHS) annual meeting last month.

The gathering marked the local society’s 41st year.

A rare guided tour of the historic Farmers Market-adjacent site included the house, grounds, orchard and even chickens.

Adrian Scott Fine, director of advocacy for the Los Angeles Conservancy, was guest speaker. He talked about “Saving CBS” — an appropriate subject because that historic mid-century modern television production complex is just north of the garden wall where he was speaking.

Houses allowed more square footage, front garages under Koretz

By Suzan Filipek Two houses under construction at 300 and 339 S. Citrus Ave. are not what La Brea Hancock residents had in mind when envisioning the outcome of a new antiMcMansion law passed in March 2017.

One house whose construction got underway last month, at 300 S. Citrus, is really big — between 3,000 and 4,000 square feet — not including the square footage of the front garage on Citrus Ave. So what happened?

A few things, according to area resident watchdogs.

The developer/owner’s plans for that two-story, corner house were approved just

before more restrictive new “variation zone” ordinances and an amended Baseline Mansionization Ordinance (BMO) went into effect in March 2017.

“Board members looked into this in late March and learned the permit was approved eight days prior to our new zone change,” according to Tammy Rosato, president of the La Brea Hancock Homeowners Association.

“Looks like it will be a big house with an attached front garage which is what we really don’t like to see,” said another resident, who asked to be anonymous.

“pulled a fast one,” but, “that’s not the case,” the anonymous source added.

Alarmed, area residents began to investigate when demolition began of a 1,769-square-foot, three-bedroom, two-bath home on the site, built in 1924.

What they learned was that the owner applied for a permit March 9, 2017, days before the BMO was approved citywide, as well as the stricter La Brea Hancock Variation Zone with Rear Garage (R1R3-RG).

It was a similar situation for the further-along house at 339 S. Citrus. The owner there applied for a permit March 3, 2017.

Koretz district Pending the passage of the more restrictive ordinances,

local areas were protected by Interim Control Ordinances (ICO). However, both sides of the 300 block of South Citrus Avenue were in the ICO known as “Lower Council District 5,” which had a less restrictive ICO than the rest of La Brea Hancock (in CD4).

The two sides of Citrus, along with the west side of Highland Avenue, all between Third and Fourth streets, were removed from CD4 and added to CD5 during the 2012 redistricting at the request of Councilman Paul Koretz. And, therefore, the Councilman had these two sides of Citrus, in this one block, included in his less-strict ICO, the Lower CD5 ICO. “We didn’t even know about it,” said the anonymous

Local chef is motivated by his search for best possible produce

By Billy Taylor It’s summer in Los Angeles, which means that gardens, grocers and farmers’ markets are teeming with juicy, plump produce. And at least one local chef credits his restaurant’s success, in part, on his ability to bring that California farmfresh produce to your plate.

Chef Kevin Meehan, who opened Kali restaurant on Melrose Avenue in 2016, says it’s the hunt for “the best” ingredients that keeps him motivated week to week.

“In this day and age, we have availability of almost anything in the world, at any given time. I can buy Spanish mackerel and get it shipped in Styrofoam boxes,” says chef Meehan on a recent afternoon at his restaurant.

“But I prefer the back-tobasics method, of sorts: I use what’s around me.”

Meehan is describing his approach to sourcing local, farm-fresh produce — a process that, he explains, takes time and, in some cases, requires a relationship with the farmer.

“It’s how I get the good stuff,” he says.

Taking matters into his own hands earlier this year, Meehan converted the front lawn of a Lucerne Boulevard property — with the homeowner’s permission, of course — into a garden, outfitted with nine 12-foot by 3-foot raised garden beds.

“I use that space as an ornamental garden,” he says. “We grow fresh herbs and specialty plants right there.” In June, the beds were bursting with kale, mustard frills, parsley, rosemary and sage, to name a few.

For larger produce, Meehan says he leaves it to the professionals: “I can do some things better than the tomato guy, but growing a tomato isn’t one of them.”

That means you can find the Culver City resident scouring local farmers’ markets several days a week: “I go to the Santa Monica farmers’ market on Wednesdays, and the Hollywood farmers’ market on Saturdays and Sundays.”

Of course, farmers’ markets are open to the public too, which means Meehan needs a strategy to get the ripest avocados and freshest fish; for him, that means nurturing a long-term relationship directly with the vendors.

“Relationships are important. It’s become indirectly one of my biggest strengths at the restaurant because, through these relationships, I get the crème de la crème.”

“I like to think that my relationships with these farmers have come to a point where I am getting the best of the market at any given week.

Developer taps new life into vintage Musicians Union building

By Suzan Filipek Lincoln Property Company is rehabilitating the historic Musicians Union building.

The property will be reinvented with a two-building, creative office campus featuring a private exterior landscaped courtyard and an above-ground parking garage.

The project is expected to be completed in 2019.

“It’s a very positive adaptive reuse of a building that is significant to Hollywood history and the music industry,” said Ken Bernstein, principal city planner, Office of Historic Resources.

The original union building’s 36,000 square feet of office space will join another new 60,000- square-foot building at 817 and 827 Vine St. and the three-level, 171-space parking structure.

The national real estate developer, also called LPC West, will be adding the new office space on what had been the surface parking lot.

The property will include a lobby and main entrance off Vine, and an existing pedestrian entrance off Waring Avenue will be closed.

Italian Museum to Garden Party in Fremont Place to mark Sicily’s 75th raise funds for urban green space To mark the 75th anniversary of the Allied invasion of Sicily, the Italian American Museum will exhibit the work of Phil Stern on Sun., July 8 at 3:30 p.m. at the museum, 644 N. Main St. Before Stern was Frank Sinatra’s personal photogapher, he was a World War II combat photographer and covered the liberation of Sicily. By Suzan Filipek Wendy Clifford had been working behind the scenes for years, so when she joined Wilshire Rotary in 2010, taking over at the helm of its many projects was only natural.

Among the many hats she wears is overseeing the holiday Pumpkin Patch and Tree Lot on Larchmont Boulevard.

She was surprised when the fundraisers “broke all the records” at the end of last year.

“They netted $66,000,” Clifford told us.

“They are such a big thing in our community,” Clifford added of the annual events held at an empty lot on North Larchmont the past 11 years.

“So many customers say, ‘We’re so glad you’re here. We love it!’”

She was named District 5280 Rotarian of the Year in May. She was chosen from among 2,000 members countywide.

“It was very nice,” she said of the honor.

“Clifford exemplifies the heart and soul of Rotary, whether organizing the District picnic and annual Color Run to End Polio or planning the club’s 85th anniversary celebration,” said Elsa Gillham, past District governor.

By Suzan Filipek The Greater Wilshire Neighborhood Council (GWNC) held its second Drought-Tolerant Garden Tour June 2, and after the success of the first tour, committee co-chairs Cathy Roberts and Julie Stromberg turned their sights to neighborhoods not featured in the 2016 tour: Brookside, Sycamore Square and Wilshire Park.

“It was truly a lovely way to spend half the day, touring all the gardens with a good friend, and making new ones along the way! It inspired me to do some work in my own yard and garden,” said Tammy Rosato, a La Brea-Hancock resident.

The self-guided and free tour showcased eight homes and included a Fremont Place garden featured in the 2018 Garden Conservancy “Los Angeles Open Day” tour and a Hancock Park garden recently featured in the “Los Angeles Times.” “Although our focus with this year’s tour was on the Greater Wilshire’s southernmost neighborhoods, we couldn’t resist including this gorgeous Hancock Park garden on our tour, which proved to be one of the favorite gardens for many of our patrons and one of the highlights of

Garden Tour patrons Peggy Giffin and Bob Wyman explored the gardens in a truly sustainable manner — by foot. Except for the Hancock Park garden, they were able to explore all the Tour’s gardens by foot, which proved to be 5.4 miles, in 2.5 hours. “It was fun to see the variety of ways in which our neighbors and their landscape designers have created sustainable gardens,” explains Giffin, a Hancock Park resident. “The timing of the tour was perfect for us

because we are in the design phase for our back yard. We will definitely be incorporating some of what we saw on the tour into our design,” added Giffin.

The tour featured gardens designed by Cheryl Lerner and Judy Horton, among other notable landscape designers, many of whom were present on the tour to answer questions and offer advice. Roberts and Stromberg selected the gardens to highlight each neighborhood on the tour, with gardens of different styles of drought-tolerant landscaping, and to appeal to

By Elizabeth Fuller When Larchmont Buzz co-publisher Patty Lombard’s parents, Anne and Rocci Lombard, came to live with her at her Fremont Place home a few years ago, her family began an extensive renovation to make their space more accessible and easier to navigate for elderly adults. The results were so successful, they’re featured in a June 15 story in the “Los Angeles Times.”

“I tell dad that the changes weren’t just for him and mom,” Patty told the “Times.” “This whole process has really opened our eyes and made us realize that accessibility helps everybody. Having my parents here has been great.”

The property re-design, which included remodeling former chauffeur’s quarters, turning a poolside lanai into an outdoor kitchen, and creating gardening spaces that can be accessed without bending over, has brought new energy to the family’s whole property.

Grand Slam when responding to a 2C opening bid, with the automatic response of two diamonds as a waiting bid. If opener responds with two hearts or two spades, a rebid by responder of 3C shows a hand with four High Card Points (HCP) or less. If Opener bids 3C instead of 2H or 2S, then responder bids 3D (the cheaper minor available) to show the weak hand. Any other call by responder (except raising opener’s major suit bid to game) promises five HCP or more.

The answer to the bidding question is that Responder’s first obligation is to describe the strength of her hand. With one point and less than three card support for partner’s trump suit, Responder should respond 3C, cheaper minor, showing four HCP or less.

That raises the question as to how long Responder must

keep the bidding open. While a 2C open is generally forcing to game, Opener’s rebid of 2N after partner’s 2D response may be passed because Opener has limited her hand to a maximum of 24 HCP. If Responder has less than three HCP, she may pass.

But some people also play that after a cheaper minor response by Responder, Opener’s rebid of three of her major that she bid at the two level may be passed. It’s up to Opener to force game by bidding a new suit at that point or just jumping to game in her major. I favor this treatment.

However, please note that if Opener bids 2N in his second bid, Responder’s response of 3C is not cheaper minor, it is Stayman, showing at least one four card major suit and four HCP or more.

But with a singleton and a weak six card spade suit, it’s reasonable to mention the long spades, and she may do so because she has already told Opener she has a weak hand and her bid of spades should promise six. Opener knows Responder is weak because a) she didn’t respond spades first, and b) she showed four HCP or less with her cheaper minor rebid. If Opener does not like the spade suit she can rebid her hearts at the four level or bid 3N, which is unlikely given the shape of her hand.

The Natural History Museum reopened its permanent exhibition, “Becoming Los Angeles,” last month at 900 W. Exposition Blvd.

The exhibit is now larger, and features new objects and artwork, including objects and stories from indigenous Californians, a saddle used by a vaquero (cowboy) 150 years ago, wall murals with different aspects of life faced by Angelenos now and in the past. Community leaders share what it means to be an Indigenous Californian living in Los Angeles today in a video. Listening stations in the galleries have audio recordings of prior museum visitors who share their thoughts on Los Angeles and the museum. Visitors are invited to record their own impressions and stories of Los Angeles.

The California Art Club’s 107th annual Gold Medal Exhibition at the Natural History Museum, 900 Exhibition Blvd., runs through Sun., July 1.

“Making Time” operates at the corner of art and science, near the intersection of philosophy and wit — how else would it be so arresting?

In the first of the book’s six essays, “Tracking Tar,” it’s the methane — a by-product of bacteria eating up vegetative matter — that gives rise to a look at Los Angeles’s petroleum industry, and the liquid asphalt production that began at our famous tar pits in 1859.

Did you know that Los Angeles is the richest oil basin in North America, and the second richest in the world? That’s a quote from Hal Washburn, a Los Angeles energy czar. Fox also riffs on the making of the movie “Volcano” — where a river of lava pours its viscous way down Wilshire Boulevard.

And he wonders where, exactly, in Hancock Park was the house, built in 1924, of

his great-grandmother? She’s an irresistible character in the skillful interweaving of the astonishing varied elements of this story.

But like a quicksilver messenger pulling through the book is the notion of time — particularly time as kneaded, braided, stretched, snipped, accelerated, attenuated, and frozen by the movie, television, cyberspace and aerospace industries. Not to mention smart phones. Bill Fox’s mind is one you want to know. His grace on the page is a joy. How can a universe be contained in 167 pages? He’s managed it.

And that holds true whether he is discussing NASA, human burials, Hubble (the man) or the Autry Museum.

‘Fictoir,’ ‘Seamstress of Ourfa,’ weaves a rich family tale

By Suzan Filipek Victoria Harwood ButlerSloss’ new novel, “The Seamstress of Ourfa,” is the first in a trilogy that takes the reader on an exotic journey from the end of the 19th century and the Ottoman empire to the modern age.

Richly-drawn characters feature four generations of women, including Khatoun, a child bride and the novelist’s great-great grandmother.

Reviews have been good (see goodreads.com), and the Wilton Place resident and author is readying for a book signing Thurs., Sept. 13 at Chevalier’s Books, 126 N. Larchmont Blvd.

The book opens with a family reunion in Cyprus in 1968, where we meet a young girl who shares the novelist’s name.

“That’s me as a child,” says Victoria.

When she first peddled her book to the Simon & Schusters of the world, the book was praised, but they stopped short of publishing. They said, “I didn’t have a niche.”

She eventually found a publisher, Armida Books, and a niche: “It’s fictoir, a blend of fiction and memoir,” Victoria said recently in the spacious back yard of her N. Wilton Place home.

Victoria was born in England, like her father, who was stationed in the British army on Cyprus. Growing up, Victoria was surrounded by an extended family and a menagerie of pets as she listened to Khatoun spin tales of her youth as a gifted seamstress, making wedding gowns, trousseaus and haute couture for the Turk ruling families. Her work weaved magic, as clients would return saying, “‘Your dresses made me pregnant,’ or ‘I wore your dress, and I got engaged.’

“There is a lot of magical realism in the book. [Family members] tell you fantastic tales. I wanted to keep those,” says the author, adding, the

book “is full of lies, misquotes and dead people, but it’s historically accurate!”

Told by different members of the family, interpretations of the same story differ: there is Khatoun’s sister, the fiery Ferida; and Khatoun’s older, increasingly reclusive and alcoholic husband Iskender.

They live in the ancient towns of Aleppo and Ourfa (the latter is today called Sanliurfa, in Turkey; (“It’s where brides-to-be go to jump the border to Syria.”)

Khatoun continued sewing into her 90s and crocheted Victoria a shawl before she left for London, where she began a career as a dancer and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. She continues her work in voiceovers, anime films among them, and is an award-winning filmmaker.

After meeting her husband, film producer William ButlerSloss, the couple immigrated to the U.S. in 1999 and had two sons, Arum, 17, and Roibhilin (pronounced Revlin), 13.

Her mother-in-law, Elizabeth Butler-Sloss, is a retired judge in the House of Lords, and for a time she chaired the inquest into the deaths of Princess Diana and Dodi Fayed.

Victoria is mourning the death of her husband William, who died earlier this year of stomach cancer at 50.

She is comforted by her family, and by Robert, a pit mix she found abused and abandoned on the street four years ago.

And the book. She started writing it as a teen, jotting down notes from the stories she heard. The first of the trilogy, the 298-page tome is set in the

crumbling Ottoman empire.

World War I and the Armenian Genocide are on the horizon, yet the book really “is a family story set in the rich culture of the Armenian community of the past,” Victoria says.

Irish folk music to Latin and reggae to pop and folk rock is performed at the Arboretum’s Summer Nights, Fridays June 29, July 6 and 27 and Aug. 10.

Romantic hits of the 1980s, a tribute to the Beatles, Leonard Bernstein’s 100th birthday and Broadway music will all be featured during the Pasadena Pops performances Saturdays July 21, Aug. 4 and 18 and Sept. 8. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. on the Bauer Lawn.
