Painters of the Ninth Street Show, LACMA and the Nature of Time

Within the shadow of memory in the presently reconstituting Los Angeles County Museum of Art, in the now-demolished, Peirera-designed Ahmanson building, was a room of pilgrimage, at least for me.

I would enter LACMA’s west entry to run up those wide, sweeping stairs to My Room.

Among the paintings and sculpture and other works in that marvelous, enormous room were my inspirations — works by Joseph Albers, Mark Rothko, Lee Krasner, Helen Frankenthaler and Joan Mitchell.

I’m sure many of you found your own rooms at LACMA — places where what you saw allowed your minds and hearts to expand, where your lives were made richer, where you learned something new with each visit.

The paintings of Albers were my intellectual guides and luminous beacons as a printmaker. But over the years the other works of art in the room became just as important.

My interest in Abstract Expressionism has deep roots, beginning in my early teens.

But it was at LACMA where I was struck by the depth and complexity in the work of Krasner, Frankenthaler and Mitchell.

Ninth Street book When “Ninth Street Women: Lee Krasner, Elaine de Kooning, Grace Hartigan, Joan Mitchell, and Helen Frankenthaler: Five Painters and the Movement That Changed Modern Art” by Mary Gabriel was published in 2018, I read reviews of the book with great interest. I bought the Back Bay Books paperback edition at the end of last year.

Nine hundred pages! Surely I would start it on the first day of lockdown in March. But it took a bit longer than that — and I read the last 400 pages first. I’m glad I did.

Ninth Street show Writer Mary Gabriel’s title refers to the now-fabled 1951 Ninth Street Show in a New York storefront, a space rented by the exhibiting 72 artists themselves, then unknown except to one another. Yet they would quickly change art history and establish the U.S. as the post-war epicenter of a new visual world.

There were 61 men in that show, including Jackson Pollack and Willem de Kooning, and 11 women, among them the quintet of painters Gabriel follows in this group portrait, set in the political and social context of the time.

But Gabriel’s book is also a moving and intimate narrative of the lives of Krasner, Hartigan, de Kooning, Mitchell, and Frankenthaler. There is a 20-year span in their ages (Krasner was born in 1908, Frankenthaler in 1928) which makes for a multi-layered story — their New York post-war experiences, and the nature of their work were divergent, but their struggle for recognition and acceptance as artists was the same.

“Ninth Street Women” was slow to start. I felt daunted by the details of Lee Krasner’s beginnings in Brooklyn in a family of Russian immigrants.

Later, picking up the book and reading at random, I was hooked. When I returned to the beginning to read the origin stories of each painter, I was eager to know all of it.

Among the paintings I saw in “my” room at LACMA was Joan Mitchell’s 1956 “East Ninth Street.” Her work, and her struggle, continue to resonate in my mind. [View “East

Oct. 1, 2018 issue of the “New Yorker,” writes movingly of Mitchell in her later years: “Wholly involved in the surrounding earth and the responsive self, color and emotion, she worked with an intensity that makes these elements indistinguishable.

Turns out that ‘Missing Middle Housing’ has been here all along

It must be the heat. The dog days of summer in Los Angeles are when our climate takes a break from its normal programming to remind us that we do indeed live in a desert. The heat turns up to broiling, and the sun bleaches the color out of everything.

Brian Curran The senses dull, and a siesta is called for. Time appears to slow. It is a time that, in the past, people associated with ill temper, madness and bad luck. It is probably no coincidence, then, that Abundant Housing Los Angeles and its offshoot, Friends of the Purple Line, decided to drop their new initiative, “The Purple Line Plan,” just in time for it to receive minimal attention, but cause maximum irritation.

The Purple Line Plan’s goals sound innocent and civicminded enough, claiming to be supported by a “group of local stakeholders (The Friends of the Purple Line) who seek to build a growing, dynamic, inclusive, and afford-

“Missing Middle Housing” They seek to do this by reviving construction of small-scale multi-family housing that they call “Missing Middle Housing.” These Abundant Housing lobbyists correctly say these buildings were common in Los Angeles until around WWII. The advocates write that, “Types of Missing Middle Housing typically include multiplexes, cottage courts, townhomes, small apartments, and live/work units. If built close to transit, then these spaces can provide their dwellers an enjoyable,

affordable living experience.”

What’s not to like about that?

The question then arises, where will all this “Missing Middle Housing” go?

According to Dick Platkin, a former City of Los Angeles city planner, who analyzed the plan, “Their proposal massively up-zones a 10-mile square area, including every residential lot in the Beverly-Fairfax, Melrose, Miracle Mile, Carthay, Pico, and Hancock Park and Larchmont neighborhoods.”

ily neighborhoods, within a mile radius of a subway station. The idea is to construct 36,000 units, of which 8,000 would be affordable.

Radical transformation Now why would the residents of Miracle Mile and the surrounding communities acquiesce to such a radical transformation of their historic communities and the abolition of their single-fam-

ily residential neighborhoods, historic preservation overlay zones (HPOZs) and anti-mansionization overlays?

Because, according to Friends of the Purple Line, we who already live here are the inheritors of “unearned privilege.”

The result? Isaac Gendler of Abundant Housing Los Angeles writes: “This blocks off vast multitudes of potential residents from enjoying the high quality of life that the neighborhood has to offer.

Residents that would have taken full advantage of its transit-accessibility, ditching a car-centric lifestyle and helping move the planet towards a more sustainable paradigm.”

Good Grief!

It is bad enough that state senator Scott Wiener, from San Francisco, has been lead-

ing an assault on our communities from Sacramento with his and others’ “Nine Bad Bills” (the Sons of SB 50 – see livablecalifornia.org/ act-now-3-2). Now we have another Silicon Valley-funded Bay Area group — California YIMBY — partnering with Abundant Housing Los Angeles to push this local plan.

This just adds insult to injury.

Miracle Mile and its surrounding communities are ethnically, religiously and economically diverse, not to mention already possessing some of the largest concentrations of historic “middle housing,” much of which is rent stabilized.

Woke policy Thankfully, we need not fear that this woke housing pol-

icy from the Bay Area will be imposed upon us anytime soon. (Some of the Nine Bad Bills, however, may now be making their ways to Governor Newsom’s desk.) The Friends of the Purple Line have received a cool reception from Councilmen David Ryu and Paul Koretz, due to the fact that the “Friends” have garnered little community support.

Perhaps these up-zoning advocates have not been addressing residents, community groups, neighborhood councils and homeowner associations because nothing says “support my plan” like calling us privileged racists who stand in the way of housing and climate justice.

It must be the heat.

Art exhibits, dance event inspired by a drive-in at Tarfest 2020

By Suzan Filipek Pandemic or no pandemic, the Tarfest 2020 multi-arts festival will go on.

This 18th annual event is an ambitious undertaking with two group art exhibits and a live dance event inspired by a beloved area drive-in theater.

The Gilmore Drive-In, which opened in 1948 and closed in 1979 — now the site of The Grove — will be remembered in a dance performance at the closing of this year’s festival on Fri., Oct. 2.

The festival usually takes place outdoors at Tar Pits Park in the Miracle Mile. But nothing is usual about this year.

for over 18 years, remaining an important annual event through massive changes that have transformed the city,” says Tarfest founder James Panozzo of Launch LA. “This year’s challenges of a global pandemic forced artists and producers to really impose their creative will. I think we have accomplished something special.”

Tarfest kicked off last month with a Facebook Live Opening of the first of the two group exhibitions, “Transition.” It continues, online, at the ART170 building, 170 S. La Brea Ave. In all, 132 artists submitted more than 440 works in July for the open-call show, curated by Holly Jerger, who is the exhibitions curator at Craft Contemporary.

The exhibit features 46 artworks by 44 Southern California artists whose practices engage with core concepts of change during these unprecedented times.

The second group exhibition, “Have To Hold,” curated

by Elizabeth Tinglof and Ashley Hagen, opened on Sat., Sept. 5 at Launch LA, 170 S. La Brea Ave. In the exhibition, six contemporary artists reflect upon the rich and charged history and psychology of collecting. Through their own

use of objects and materials, they construct stories of ex-

periences and conceptual perspectives, addressing both the

Cerrell impact is part of national, state, city, Larchmont history

By John Welborne Last month, in an article about the departure from Larchmont Blvd. of Cerrell Associates after 40 years on the Boulevard, we mentioned briefly the firm’s legendary founders, and Windsor Square residents, Joe and Lee Cerrell.

Both Lee and Joe were professionally active in politics.

Lee and Joe met when she was working on the 1958 gubernatorial campaign of thenAttorney General Edmund G. “Pat” Brown and Joe was working next door for the California Democratic Party.

They married in 1963 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, postponing the ceremony by a week at the request of Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson so they could oversee a Los Angeles event for President John F. Kennedy.

Joe died in 2010, and Lee died in 2016. At the time of Joe’s death, the couple had

Our paper considered Joe a regular Larchmont Chronicle newsmaker because of his civic involvement. He was a board member of the Hollywood-Wilshire YMCA, where he was famous for the annual, black-tie, stag dinners he staged at Wilshire Country

Club with Councilman John Ferraro to raise funds for the “Y.” Most participants went home with prizes, but somehow the YMCA still ended up with lots of money.

Joe also was a prominent sponsor of each September’s annual Feast of San Gennaro (celebrating Italy, of course).

He earned awards from the

Public Relations Society of America and from ItalianAmerican organizations.

Joe also served as president of the California Museum of Science and Industry and as a member of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum Commission.

Butterfly Pavilion, Nature Gardens to open for viewing We could all use a refreshing break in the outdoors just about now. So, it’s just in the nick of time that the Natural History Museums of Los Angeles County (NHMLAC) will open the Butterfly Pavilion at the Natural History Museum (NHM) beginning Fri., Sept. 11.

Also open will be parts of NHM’s 3.5-acre Nature Gardens.

See up to 30 species of but-

terflies and caterpillars in a netted enclosure filled with native plants and natural light. Spacious pathways will connect visitors with nature in the heart of Los Angeles.

The indoor Museum will remain closed until further notice.

Masks required Guests will be required to wear face masks, social distance, and be limited to a total of 10 persons at a time.

Advance timed-ticket reservations are required.

Tickets to enter are $6 for the Pavilion and include Nature Gardens access. Parking passes must be pre-paid and are $6.

The Butterfly Pavilion will initially be open Friday to Sunday from 9:40 a.m. to 5 p.m. with plans to increase the days and hours over time.

We just passed the official Dog Days of Summer (July 22 – August 22, 2020), which follow the rising of the constellation Sirius that Greek and Roman astrology connected with heat, drought, thunderstorms and bad luck. Nonetheless, for our pets, this bad luck could continue and mean fleas and ticks.

These pests can cause discomfort, itchiness, allergic reactions and can carry more serious diseases, according to Los Angeles Animal Services.

Fleas thrive in warmer weather, but may go dormant during the winter in colder areas. Ticks, too, are more than a nuisance, so be sure to thoroughly check your pet after a walk or a hike in the woods.

Prevention is the greatest defense: Ask your veterinarian to recommend a flea product for your dogs and cats. Wash bedding in hot, soapy water. Vacuum all floors thoroughly and throw away the vacuum bag, and treat your yard with a nontoxic treatment such as sprays or pellets.
