“The Jack Doyle House,” as it was named for its first owner, was built in 1919 in the thennew Windsor Square development. Irving Hellman was an early investor and, in thanks, the street was named for him.

(Continued from page 2) neurial businessman from the Midwest railroad engineer he had been before heading to California to seek his fortune. Doyle connected with city of Vernon co-founder John Leonis, whose original plan was to build that city as a completely industrial area.

Doyle thought it would be the perfect place to open a bar and boxing ring and did so in 1906-1907. The resulting arena and training center became the center of boxing in the Los Angeles area and famous nationally for luxurious training facilities, which included a pool and tennis courts. Overflow crowds crammed onto

the outdoor benches to watch bouts between the greats, including Jack Dempsey.

The Temperance movement had gotten a foothold in the country, and Los Angeles was dry, but Vernon allowed alcohol until Prohibition took effect in 1920, so Doyle’s bar, adjacent to the boxing ring, was equally popular. The so-called “longest bar in the world,” was 100 feet in length. 37 bartenders, each with his own cash register, tended to the thirsty patrons under the watchful eye of Mr. Doyle, who often greeted guests at the door or spied on them through holes drilled in the ceiling. Doyle was a teetotaler himself, and a sign above the bar reminded his customers, “If your chil-

dren need shoes, don’t buy any booze.”

Doyle’s booze era may have ended, but boxing was still a top draw, so in 1923 he razed his arena and built a modern, indoor 9,000-seat coliseum on the property. Fatty Arbuckle was a huge fan of boxing and an extra-wide seat was designed just for the portly actor. Many Hollywood luminaries flocked to the fights in Vernon, both to the original Arena and to Doyle’s Vernon Coliseum, including Charlie Chaplin, who sat ringside and

Named the most popular leading man of 1915, and posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Williams made dozens of films, starring with such Hollywood elite as a young Rudolph Valentino in “A Rogue’s Romance” and with Clara Bow in “The Adventurous Sex.” In 1918 he had married Florine Walz, who was a credited writer on a few of his films, and they had a daughter, Joan. Their blissful life on Irving Boulevard was cut unexpectedly short when Williams died of double pneumonia in 1927 at the age of 47.

His 29-year-old widow was left with an estate estimated to be worth $260,000 ($3,884,400 in today’s dollars).

The widow Williams made bad investments, including losing most of her money in an oil business scam run by her then-boyfriend Wallace Harvey, who left her destitute and with an out-of-wedlock child, Billy. Some news reports call her son Earle Jr., and the timing is such that she might have been in the early stages of pregnancy at the time of Williams death. It’s equally possible that she called him Earle Jr. to divert attention from her

unfortunate dalliance with her scoundrel lover.

Life of crime At any rate, after losing everything, Walz Williams entered a life of crime. She wrote bad checks, illegally attempted to take out a mortgage on her property, and after moving to the Bay Area to live with her mother Clarisse in a boarding house, stole $3,400 from her maid. She was already on probation for her past monetary indiscretions, and she convinced her maid to wait until the next day before calling the police, promising to raise the funds and repay her in the morning. Tragically, she was unable to write herself a happy Hollywood ending. That night Florine Walz Williams chloroformed her two children and she and her mother then did the same to themselves.

Ownership of the home on Irving reverted back to Jack Doyle, but it was sold twice: to real estate developer Paul Lewis Corrigan in 1933, and in 1938 to attorney Hubert F. Laugharn, Sr., who owned it into the 1970s, when music impresario Paul Fishkin purchased it.

(Continued from page 4) sic manager, notably for Todd Rundgren. Rundgren would take Fishkin to parties and bars, encouraging him to find a girlfriend, and even wrote one of his biggest hits for him, “We Gotta Get You a Woman.”

Fishkin went on to date Stevie Nicks and created Modern Records with her and a third partner, Danny Goldberg. Although no longer Fishkin’s girlfriend, Ms. Nicks was one of the label’s biggest recording artists, and she is godmother to Fishkin’s daughter Molly.

The Landays Suz and Peter Landay, the sixth and present owners of the landmark home, made some improvements of their own, most notably expanding the backyard loggia and installing lower-than-usual cabinets for easier access. The Fishkins had installed a large greenhouse window over the sink, and the Landays turned that into a real garden with greenery planted directly in the soil-lined base and butterflies metamorphosing from pupae on the growing leaves. Another novel feature is the built-in stepstool. Tucked into a mere inch-and-a-half of linear space, one can pull

out a flat wooden panel which unfolds with the flick of a finger into a practical stool. The Landays also upgraded the expansive and exquisite garden, which has twice been featured on the Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical Society Garden Tour.

In September over Zoom, the Landays shared their home’s features and history with nearly 80 Ebell of Los Angeles members and invited guests.

By Rachel Olivier The late Rosemary Hill moved with her parents to 801 S. Longwood Ave. when she was six years old. She lived there until her death in 2018 at the age of 98! She would have been 100 years old last month on Sept. 23.

She was interviewed twice by members of the Windsor Square-Hancock Park Historical Society, and the house received the group’s Landmark Award #75.

According to the interviews, Hill grew up in Brookside and

Harold A. Henry Park in Windsor Village: Wood family property now a public park

By Jane Gilman What today is known as Harold A. Henry Park was once a family compound consisting of five houses.

Dr. Eldie Preston (E.P.) Wood came to Los Angeles in the early 1900s and decided to invest in property. He liked the area between Wilshire

Boulevard and Olympic Boulevard (then still 10th Street).

The odd-shaped parcel he purchased became the site of a large home called the “Big House,” plus two one-story duplexes, a one-story Spanish-style home and a log cabin. The parcel’s borders were Francis Avenue, Windsor Boulevard, Ninth Street and Borck Place (now Lucerne Blvd).

The “Big House” featured Craftsman-style architecture, and its largest room was the library, said Kathie Gauld, granddaughter of E.P. Wood.

Kathie lived with her parents in the house that faced Ninth Street.

She remembers the impressive landscaping on the property including an immense rose garden, tropical fruit trees and specimen plants.

Only the eucalyptus trees remain, Kathie said. There was a large patio and a badminton court. The main house had a separate wing for the servants, who were often a married couple, said Kathie.

“The log cabin is where my uncle Felix used to study for his dental degree, and its skulls and skeletons scared me.”

He married Pauline Vollmer, and the couple had three children, Felix, Sonia and Vollmer (Kathie’s father). Pauline’s father, Herman Vollmer, was owner of Vollmer & Co., an upscale store on South Broadway that sold fine china, jewelry and silver.

In addition to real estate investments, Wood founded and/or invested in several businesses including the White Star Linen Co. that lat-

er became Table Linen Supply Co. After E.P. died in 1931, Pauline ran the family business. She later downsized and moved to the Spanish-style house on Ninth St., and her children moved into other houses on the property.

Pauline felt learning languages was very important, and she had the children learn French from their French governess before they learned to speak English. The family also spent a year in Europe in 1926. During the Depression, Pauline would give out food to people who came to the house.

By John Welborne As the last remnants of the 1965 William Pereira-designed Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) disappear, passers-by can imagine the vast amount of open space that will be under and around the new LACMA structure. One can envision dining inside the two-story-high interior of the new Ray’s & Stark Bar or on the terrace outside (still to be in the general vicinity of the existing restaurant, across the plaza connecting to the existing Resnick Exhibition Pavilion and the Broad Contemporary Art Museum [BCAM]).

Envisioning the future LACMA addition became easier in the middle of last month, when LACMA released floor plans and additional renderings of gallery interiors for the building being designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor & Partner, with local design collaboration from iconic American architecture firm Skidmore Owings & Merrill (SOM).

For the first time, SOM’s role is getting more attention, with Michael Mann, FAIA, having been interviewed for the “Los Angeles Times” story published on September 18. Mann, a managing director at SOM, spoke about the detailed study underway for the color and tex-

in the accompanying floor plan of the second floor — just south of the existing LACMA Pavilion for Japanese Art. Structural features are generally overlooked by most visitors and usually are invisible. However, for engineering geek readers, we’ll also share that Govan mentioned that the base isolators being utilized in the project are among the largest ever installed, anywhere in the world.

The ground floor of the David Geffen Galleries building will have a 300-seat theater on the south side of Wilshire Boulevard (the former Spaulding Avenue surface parking lot). Adjoining will be a wine bar fronting on the Wilshire sidewalk.

On the ground on the north side will be the C+M Café at LACMA, an art gallery, art studio and outdoor space for educational activities as well as films, talks, galas and live music. The north side is also where the LACMA Store will be located, between the new Ray’s & Stark Bar and the elevators to the exhibition level upstairs.

which were created originally for outdoors, and there will be seating benches for visitors who want to rest and contemplate the surroundings.

Courtyard galleries These are organically shaped galleries that lead to, and connect, the interior galleries. The courtyard galleries are sheltered from direct light, but natural light will come from the side. Zumthor’s career has featured a special consciousness of the role of natural light, such as in his Kunsthaus Bregenz museum in Austria.

Core galleries The approximately 25 core galleries are enclosed except for a single entrance-exit portal (or, in two of the larger galleries, two such portals). Rectangular in shape, these interior galleries feature controlled light, best for a variety of artworks, including works on paper such as drawings, prints and photographs.

LACMA leaders expect construction of the new building to be complete in 2023. The public opening is planned for 2024.

Dining debuts not to be missed in the midst of a pandemic

The feta in the $15 Greek salad was mild and melded well with the tomatoes, onions and olives, but the abundance of too-large lettuce pieces dwarfed the rest.

The $17 charred octopus lacked much evidence of the promised char and therefore lacked the depth of flavor that comes from that treatment. I was really looking forward to the $15 burger, which paired a ground lamb and beef patty with lettuce, tomato, onions and tzatziki on a bun. The chef seemed afraid of the salt shaker, and the sandwich was somewhat dry. Perhaps the jewels of their menu reside in the clams Diane with caviar, the coffee baklava, or in their website’s promise of an “alluring ambiance,” but I can’t promise to venture back to find out.

by English musician Gary Twinn, who also oversees the market’s Bar 326 and E.B.’s Beer & Wine, and the new pub’s kitchen is helmed by Chef Brendan Collins, formerly of Waterloo & City. The pub offers the usual staples, from $19.50 bangers and mash to $22.50 shepherd’s pie (their

version uses vegan “impossible” meat), from $18 full English breakfasts to Sunday roasts with roast beef, chicken or lamb leg with all the trimmings $26-$28. There’s a full bar with the expected extensive beer menu. They have a covered patio for on-site dining, and they use delivery services, but we decided to pick up our order since savory pies aren’t offered on the delivery menu and we wanted to try one. The steak and ale pie had a lovely golden crust, tender beef chunks and the requisite carrot cuts and creamy sauce inside. Aside from the need for a pinch more salt and a little fresh thyme, we were pleased with the easily sharable $19.50 pie. The $15.25 salt-and-pepper squid was well-crisped.

As is often the case, the squid tasted more of fried anything than of calamari, but it was perfect with a beer. We had to try the $24 fish and chips, which presented two fillets of super crunch-coated rockfish

The audience gets the theater — and the politicians — it deserves

In recent columns I have lamented the loss of political theater in American life. Given this election season, I wanted to see if I could pinpoint what made theater “political.”

There are, I think, four main periods of political theater in Western drama: Fifth Century B.C. Athens; Elizabethan London; Europe in the second half of the 19th century; and in America, from roughly 1930 to 1970. These periods share a broad pattern: (1) Playwrights respond to a national threat, such as the Persians invading Greece.

(2) The plays are initially laudatory, as in Shakespeare’s “Henry V.” (3) The threat vanquished, criticism shifts (as in “Euripides”) to the establishment,

until the powers-that-be have enough; and then, (4) the Puritans, Spartans, or other McCarthyite reactionaries shut the theater down until the next existential threat.

Europe after 1848 Look at European theater after 1848, a year that was the 2020 of its day! (In 1848, Marx and Engels wrote “The Communist Manifesto;” liberal revolutions and their conservative repressions burned across Europe; and — for good measure — American women met in Seneca Falls to demand the vote). In the decades that followed, Zola, Ibsen, Shaw and Chekov turned European theater into a platform for social change, a trend that held until World War I and the Commu-

Which brings us to America.

The U.S. — late 1800s Our Puritan forefathers viewed entertainment as a sin.

Theater played only a minor part in American life until the late 19th century, when drama helped shape a national identity based on rugged individualism. The perceived “threat” to America was not an invasion by Persians or the Spanish Armada. It was an attack on the “American

Dream” (a trump card politicians still play). Then, in the 1920s, Eugene O’Neill challenged “this American Dream stuff,” as he put it, asking whether it was the marginalized “fog people,” as he called them, who failed to succeed, or rather, the Dream itself that failed in its false premises.

In the Depression, U.S. theaters (begun by liberals and influenced by Russians) produced a critique of that Dream by such collectives as the Group Theater and Living Newspaper. To avoid the label “Communist,” playwrights such as Maxwell Anderson and Clifford Odets pulled their political punches, as did the Miller-Williams-Inge-Albee dramas of 1950s and 60s, leaving the fourth and final phase of political theater to the radical productions of Off- and Off-Off Broadway, where they slowly dwindled and died, cut off by a lack of funding and interest.

The U.S. in the 1980s Political theater died in this country because of Reaganomics, changes in media and popular culture, and a toxic mix of complacency and correctness. The dominant theater form of the 1980s was the mega-musical. Could anything be less political than the storming of the Parisian barricades in “Les Miz”?

Even when theaters did tackle tricky issues, political themes were tempered so as not to make donors, subscribers or the NEA too uncomfortable.

In doing so for the last 40 years, theater has made itself politically irrelevant, and, as is all too apparent now, economically expendable.

In the 1970s, director Peter Brook wrote that “every audience gets the theatre it deserves.” It is a theory that echoes Jefferson and de Tocqueville. Democracy depends on an educated and enlightened electorate. The electorate is the audience, and the audience is the electorate. If our theater is bloated, moribund and lazy, why should we expect our politics — or politicians — to be any different?

My hope is that we, like the original French “saboteurs” of the mid-19th century, will throw our sabot-like Crocs into the infernal machines and say “Enough!” — ending the tweets, the influencers, the misinformation, the ignorance and the disinformation that daily trivializes our lives.

Then we just might walk outside and put on a play about stopping. And others will stop and listen to a play about stopping. And who knows, it might be enough to bring political theater, if not common sense, back to America.

Planting prayers: Gary Lyons, 82, former curator of Desert Garden Gary Lyons, born July 8, 1938, former curator and former conservation curator of the Desert Garden at The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens in San Marino, died on August 15 at his Burbank home.

He was a member of the World Conservation Union’s Species Survival Commission, and a fellow of the Linnean Society of London. He was a writer and lifelong scholar, author of scores of articles and two books, “Desert Gardens” (Rizzoli, 2000) and “Desert Plants: A Curator’s Introduction to the Huntington Desert Garden” (Huntington Library Press, 2007). He spent a half-century in service at The Huntington.

I first spoke privately with Gary Lyons at a lunch in 2011. He was well-known and much admired in Southern California and throughout the horticulture world for his knowledge and scholarship and for the results of his labor and management — the stunning curation of the world-renowned Desert Garden. He was not an outgoing man; I was struck that day with his piercing intensity and interest in others.

In 2003, Barbara King, in the “Los Angeles Times,” wrote of Gary: “Lyons is by turns scholarly and plain spoken, matter-of-fact and poetic, low-keyed and fired up.”

founder of the Foundation for Landscape Studies and editor of “Sitelines,” to write an article for the Spring 2015 issue.

I chose to consider the Desert Garden at The Huntington, which, of course, meant writing about Gary, who was then conservation curator.

Lyons in 2015 I don’t recall how many times I visited the Desert Garden that winter, but more than anything I can say now about Gary, here is a portion of what I wrote then, with some pruning: On a recent winter morning, the darkish sky bruised with gray, pink and heliotrope, Gary Lyons, wearing a grass-green jacket against the chill, stands near a garden bed edged by a clutch of wonderfully weird boojum trees.

We are in the Baja section of the lower Desert Garden.

It has rained overnight, and the perfect winter light of Southern California brings forth the subtle colors of aridland plants: the shy pink leaf margins on cacti, the creamy, pearly stripes of giant variegated agaves. Coral and orange blossoms flame up from the garden’s world-famous

Lyons is holding a long handle — the business end of which is a curved, widegapped saw — that he is using as a pointer. Two young gardeners stand close by; Lyons has their undivided attention.

He is indicating a bed of the ferocious, worming plant called, with good reason, creeping devil cactus.

“This one is dead,” he says, forking up a dark piece. “You can take it out.” The gardeners nod almost imperceptibly.

“This one may root.” They know to leave it alone.

After a few more minutes he acknowledges my presence by looking up, and saying, without greeting or preface, about this creeping devil: “There’s no history of this naturalizing outside of Baja.

This is it.”

Garden custodians The Desert Garden has bred fierce loyalty in its custodians.

Gary Lyons’ first post there, as head gardener, began in 1965,

when he was hired by Myron Kimnach, who was only the third superintendent of buildings and grounds since the garden’s beginnings, in 1907.

William Hertrich, the first garden builder, then age 87 and long retired, still came almost daily, then in a suit and tie, to walk its paths. His eyesight was failing, but The Huntington, and especially the Desert

Garden, was his life. An internationally celebrated horticulturist, his influence continues to this day. At the conclusion of his book, “Desert Plants,” Lyons writes: “’I must acknowledge an enormous debt of gratitude to William Hertrich: his inspiration and guiding spirit taught me to plant my prayers rather than say them.”

Huntington expands Chinese garden Enjoy 15 extraordinary acres of landscape in the Huntington Chinese Garden — Garden of Flowering Fragrances — when it opens again to the public Fri., Oct. 9 at 1151 Oxford Rd., San Marino.

classical-style Chinese gardens outside of China. “The debut of these new sections of the Chinese Garden coincides with the conclusion of The Huntington’s yearlong Centennial Celebration and symbolically opens a new chapter in the institution’s history,” said Karen Lawrence, president of the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens.

Utilize both gambling and investing skills to win and not lose

In Review Poker involves both gambling and investing. The more skill you have, the more of an investment is the game of poker. We are focusing on lowlimit Texas hold’em, by far the most popular game today. In our last column, we discussed how the cards are dealt, the betting, and the ranking of the hands used to determine the winner.

How to Win What is the best way to go home a winner from the casino?

Answer: Do Not Lose!

Here is the approach: (1) Minimize the number of hands that you lose and reduce the size of those pots.

(2) And, as a corollary, build the size of your winning pots. How can you do that?

Here is my advice for our readers: • Stick to your favorite game

at stakes with which you are comfortable; and focus on one variety of poker to become as expert as possible.

• Consider the game texture.

We recommend loose-passive games – lots of opponents staying to see the flop with weak hands.

• Avoid tables with several tight players. (You cannot win many chips with such players in the game. Consider a table change.)

• Avoid short-handed games with two or more raises preflop. (The pots are small when you catch a big hand, and too costly to see the flop.)

• Try to be seated to the left of an overly aggressive player.

Then you can observe how he bets or raises before you must make your decision.

• In the small blind, many players will complete their half-bet to see the flop. Realize that the small blind is the

• Invest only in hole cards that have a reasonable potential for leading to the winning hand.

• With a marginal (mediocre) starting hand, call to see the flop only if it is a multi-way hand (three or more opponents staying in) and there are no raises.

• After selecting a suitable starting hand, continue in that

hand only if it improves on the flop. It must become a made hand; or, when it is a drawing hand (needs further improvement), have at least 6 good outs – unless everyone checks and you get a free card.

• Study your opponents.

What are their playing traits?

When a tight player raises, believe him. He is not likely to be bluffing, or betting with a weak hand. Saving those chips could be the difference between a winning or losing session.

• Learn how best to bluff. Players who never bluff are bound to be losers. Never try to bluff out “calling-stations” – who stay all the way once they have invested to see the flop.

• Try not to be bluffed out. (Is the bettor deceptive?)

• Never chase. Tend to fold hands with only a few outs – unless you get a free card.

With a drawing hand, count

your outs to estimate your card odds and compare it to the pot odds. The pot odds must be higher than your card odds.

• Look for your opponents’ tells.

• Protect your made hand. If opponents could be drawing to better hands than yours, bet out or raise to thin the playing field, improving your chance of winning.

• Build the size of the pot when you catch a monster.

Your goal is to win as many chips as possible. In addition to value betting with a powerful hand, there are deceptive tactics to help you.

• Never stop learning to develop and improve your poker skills.

These vagabond thespians were always short on funds and would usually end up putting on performances and sleeping in some kindly farmer’s barn. “Taking the barns by storm” was show biz slang for “playing the sticks.”
