Opposition builds to Rancho Viejo Landfill “I took this photo from my deer blind in 2007 of a rig on the adjacent Yugo Ranch, the site of the proposed landfill. A 90-foot increase (about the height of the rig) in the base elevation resulting from the deposit of compacted garbage over the site will cause the sun to set on our property 10 to 15 minutes earlier each day…. for eternity….think about that impact to any property.” – Robert F. Wied Jr.

The Sciaraffa saga: A tale longer than Lent and not one for Semana Santa Semana santa didn’t strike me as an optimum time to continue the unsavory reportage of the Frank Sciaraffa saga, a tale of a disgraced County Commissioner who allegedly required fellatio of women in his county office, the one you and I pay for. Oh, I could pun this thing to death, er, blow-by-blow, or with a cartoon of women telling you their job sucks as they strike with fury at a Frank Sciaraffa piñata holding a bunch of cracked cascarrones and DNA samples, but that would be distasteful and an affront to the sweet days ahead of La Coneja. So I’m taking the advice of our sage political prognosticator Cholulah Bankhead, she who believes that in Laredo gossip travels faster than the speed of light, and I’m saving this story for the month that Spring is in a riot, love is in the air, and the trees hang ripe with deposition fruit. – M.E.G.
