HELLO TRAVELERS New England and Eastern Canada in the fall, how beautiful. This autumn is ending, but as the trees grow bare and the snow starts to fall, you can dream about going next year to see the seasons turn in style onboard the 1,432 passenger Holland America Zaandam. The itinerary mixes big cities Boston, Montreal and Quebec City with smaller ports of call in Halifax, Sydney, Charlottetown and Bar Harbor. Life on board offers a combination of fine and casual dining with entertainment and activities to please any cruiser during the time between ports.

DISCOVER HOLLAND AMERICA NEW ENGLAND & CANADA

INSIDERS CLUB

You might have missed your chance this year, but as those colorful leaves fall to the ground, you can secure your spot for next autumn on a Holland America cruise of New England and Canada. The 1,432-passenger Zaandam will make seven-day journeys from Boston to Montreal and reverse, as well as weeklong itineraries round trip out of Boston. The latter don’t include Quebec City and Montreal, but there is the option for back-to-back sailings for those who want to see Quebec but want to start and finish in Boston. The Zaandam is “ a really great classic Holland America ship,” Lauren Green, business development manager for New England, said. “It has gold staircases in the dining rooms and a wraparound deck that’s great for scenic cruising. While the scenery and weather are idyllic in September, the ship does have a pool with a retractable roof in case of chilly mornings. Thanks to Zaandam’s size, it can travel down the St. Lawrence River in Quebec where larger vessels dare not go. This allows for exploration of the Quebecois cities founded by the French in the 17th century.

Montreal and Quebec City are two of North America’s most historic cities, and they’re about as close to Europe as you can get on this side of the Atlantic. You’ll hear plenty of French on the streets but be able to get by in English. The vibrant downtown areas in both cities are an eclectic mix of the old and new, with great bistros and centers for the arts. Culinary excursions in Quebec City include tea at the Chateau Frontenac and a walk with Food & Wine Magazine. Mixed in along the itinerary are the provincial capitals of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, plus the town of Sydney, Nova Scotia, on Cape Breton Island and Bar Harbor, Maine. On Prince Edward Island, you can see the farm and house that inspired Anne of Green Gables and the beaches of the province’s eponymous national park, take a boat cruise and visit a historic lighthouse. Halifax has a charming lighthouse of its own, along with a fishing village, great seafood and music-filled pubs. The nearby village of w sports a colorful old town that is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Sydney’s harborside restaurant resound with sea shanties, and several surrounding national parks make for a natural paradise.

Sharing Mount Desert Island with Acadia National Park and its iconic Cadillac Mountain, Bar Harbor is a quintessential New England town where clam chowder and lobster are followed nicely by ice cream from one of the town’s many creameries. Whale season peaks in the summer, but there are often a few hanging out in the harbor during September.

So as you rake the last of this year’s leaves, start thinking about seeing them change color in style next autumn.
