Set off a journey of retreat, not to escape but to see the city in it’s primitive form. Through the crack where light comes in, we embrace the grace of the long-neglected nature. Using the swiming pool as a landscape device, it is where people will eventually slow down from their daily hectic pace and are reminded to pause and take time to admire the nature.

Preface

The design intents to maximise visitor’s interaction with the nature namely the landscape, the sea and the inner garden it sits in. The curved wall does not only serve as an boundary to seperate the architecture from the oustide world, it is also the main circulation path of the complex. It provides a journey to the visitors, a journey to slow down their foot steps and to admire and enjoy the surrounding nature.

8

As one travels along the circular path to different pools, the “inner realm” slowly reveals itself. At different moments, visitors’ attention are directed to different natural sceneries. The architecture frames the best view of the nature it sits in, just like a picture, but an every-changing one that changes along different season and time of the day. The pools are put in seperate volumes that scatter within the ring. Such as to maximise the surface area in which each volume can come in touch with the surrounding nature.

Climax

Epilogue

The Inner Realm The seperate pools are connected by a garden. The garden slighlty sloping landscape spills into the architecture and created an outdoor environment for swimmers to experience. Where they can again slow down, get lost and feel.

THE PULSE a mixed-use residential complex, exploring how architecture and design impact on one’s behavior and lifestyle.

Like many old neighborhood, the Central district of Taichung city is a forgotten treasure. Mix-use residential buildings with shops on the street level (arcade) are seen everywhere, together with many other low-rise buildings and historical leftovers. The central district is full of traces left behind from the past and is almost a perfect manifestation of the old Taichung. However, every old that refuses to comply with the modern development footsteps are doomed to be left behind. Due to lack of new development in the district, the area has became almost lifeless. Old and out-of-fashioned shops fail to attract visitors and therefore more and more vacant shops appear, making the district even more lifeless as days go by. The local artists see this as

an opportunity, they start to rent off vacant shops at low prices and are slowly transforming the atmosphere of the central district. This project intends to use architecture as a means to revitalize the neighborhood. A new type of mixed-use residential building is designed, hoping to propose a solution to not only the central district in this case, but also provide a way out for many other similar “worn-out towns that exist in Asia countries with similar characteristics.

MASSING MASSING STRATEGY STRATEGY

Inspired by the nearby walking streets (步行街) in Taichung, this iconic tower is going to be a residential building as well as a vertical walking streets complex. Taking reference to the shop front residential buildings (前舖後居), but compressed it into a smaller scale, every living apartments within the building is also a working studio/ shop front/ workshop area/ showcase area for the residents, which are local artist who wish to bring their art closer to the general public.

16

2.STRETCH 2.STRETCH Z AXIS Z AXIS

Having said it being a walking street, the tower has high publicity. Visitors are able to penetrate through the building from top to down along the continuous circulation path revolving the artist’s residential flats. Despite being highly accessible by the visitor, the privacy of the residents is not necessarily compromised. Units are designed as duplex with discrete seperation of ‘living’ space on the second floor, which is not visible by visitors, and ‘working’ spaces, which can be seen by visitors, on the lower floor. The centre of the tower is the residential core area, not only do they have a separate circulation core, it is also where they have their co-working spaces, which allow them to communicate and collaborate with each other.

This project is a proposal of a new type of mixed use buildings. With the establishment of this type of new building that took up essence of old style asia architecture features can transformed to fit into modern context, hopefully, not only the neighborhood can be revived, it also acts as a starting point to experiment how public can come closer in touch with local art, not only with their end-products but also to take a glimpse at their working process.

Back in those days before technology took over our lives, mailmen was an important medium to allow human interactions, they played an important role to the society and were keys to allow one to connect with each other. What’s more, mailmen adopts an efficient way to allow goods such as mail or parcels to be transmitted from one place to another. Their efficiency at work ensures the smoothness in our communication and encourages interactions among citizens. Plan 0

The main feature that makes a rowing centre different from any other sports facilities is its close relationship with the river. Taking advantage of this special feature, I designed a rowing centre that aims at exploring and maximizing human interactions with the river. A BOV E Perspective of the Row Tank

The three types of interaction I have chosen to focus on are namely visual, physical and sensational interation. Throughout the journey of walking through the rowing centre, visitors are expected to experience the three types of interaction at different spot. At every turn they make,it is always going to take them back to the water.

5. 1

Wandering around my childhood neighborhood, everything looks so familiar yet so foreign it even made me begin to doubt my memory. To Kwa Wan - my home sweet home, is undergoing urban renewal from head to toe, and has become an incubator for all modern architecture prototypes. Round the corner is where my old house lies. I march forward feeling excited but also a hint of anxious. "What are all those hanging machines over there?" astonished by the view at sight, "Wait... THEY ARE HOUSES!"

The REVOLUTION – Houses designed to resist rigidity! Because youths are rebellious, and so should their houses be!

01

portable

Forget about the painstaking packing process every me you move your house. Today, houses are portable, they can be transported around to anywhere instantly. Next time you move your house, you move your entire house!

02

automated

When drowsiness kicks in and you’re red of having to flip through every piece of furniture to get your bed out? (tradional transformable houses) Your houses is your new best friend, they do the heavy work for you when you feel lazy. Automated units change program in just a push of a buon, bringing you from one “room” to another while you don’t even have to move!

03 gravity-defying

And here’s the best part – we make your childhood dream of come true. Everyone has that childhood dream of becoming an astronaut. Now your gravity-defying houses can make your dream come true! Walls can be ceiling, they can also be the floor. Nothing is too rigid and there’s no place that you can reach. What’s more, with the new house, more programs and funcons are brought into your ny units, allowing more flexibility and unlimited possibilies!

THE DREAM SYMPHONY

E m b ra c i n g D r e a m s a n d C h a n g e s - Hong Kong Young Architects & Designers Competition, 2017 (Submitted proposal as One Bite Design Studio)

SITE: West Kowloon Cultural District, HK

NARRATIVE: To DREAM “She is a dreamer. A doer. A thinker. Dreams live in her arms. She is our beautiful dreamer, Hong Kong. Hong Kong is a legacy of dreams. This pavilion is our blessing in the form of a dream catcher for Hong Kong citizens and the international audience who believe in the power of dreams, on the forthcoming art and cultural axis in WKCD. To BELIEVE When one feels low and thinks he can never reach the sky, why not to imagine turning the city upside down to bring forward the sky? This is the root of the Dream Symphony Pavilion. To portray the sweetest dream, the inverted city is stretched away from the ground to generate a labyrinthine sky journey for everyone to adventure through the territory that one gets inspired every day. Dressed in a timeless form transforming from a vertically exaggerated entry to an extended horizontal viewing deck towards the harbour, the open-plan circulation reinvents the wandering in the city. The neighbouring tree is blended in the shifted massing of the pavilion to articulate an outdoor plaza for big audience. The rows of inverted tubes retain a sense of ordered chaos, lay the symphony for diversified living moments. Diversity and personality are fostered in these intricate social spaces. To ACHIEVE The composition is made up of three main layers, including the main steel structure, the inverted tubes varying in heights and opacity, and the undulating landscape representing our historical emblem. In response to the environmental concern, an open roof design with confined glazed units is proposed to optimize wind impact and allow cross ventilation. The journey along the dream catcher is highlight in the central event space energized by the arrays of colourful lightingand hanging plants. Stay dream on!
