BIKING IN LA ROSIERE
It is impossible not to be charmed by a resort with such friendly, welcoming and kind inhabitants. There is a wealth of culture and history interwoven into the resort; a resort that has managed to preserve its traditional architecture and showcases beautiful stone and woodwork. It is difficult to resist the 160km of slopes that straddle France and Italy, which make it a unique destination in the Northern Alps. La Rosière's geographical situation also allows the resort to boast some of the best snow conditions in France. Gastronomically speaking, the resort's position allows for a rich and varied combination of French and Italian culinary influences. With these attributes in mind, I hope that you too will be charmed by this extraordinary resort and will find all of the information you need in the pages of this magazine-style brochure.

Biking is for everyone! With its legendary mountain passes and steep roads, La Rosière is an ideal training ground for cyclists. For those who fancy giving mountain biking a try, the ski area is transformed into a Bike Zone for summer, with trails marked out for all different levels!

You don’t need to be big to be great! Despite being the most low-key resort in the Tarentaise Valley, La Rosière still has a lot to offer! With a FrenchItalian ski area than spans 160km, the resort boasts long and gentle, sunny slopes on the French side and more challenging skiing on the north face of the mountain, in the Aosta Valley. La Rosière is the perfect resort for families and beginners, who delight in its south-facing slopes, and for pleasure-seekers on a quest to sample some Italian delicacies across the border. At the start of your day, standing at the foot of the slopes, drink in the breathtaking 180-degree views of the Tarentaise Valley. After a day out on the mountain, enjoy the outstanding luminosity as the sun sets on the return slopes of La Rosière. From dawn to dusk, La Rosière’s slopes are bathed in sunshine! La Rosière is synonymous with easyliving, sunshine and snow! With the Mont Blanc and PetitSt-Bernard pass just a stone's throw away, the Espace San Bernardo has weather conditions that ensure that the resort receives excellent snow fall from December to April and is considered to have some of the best snow levels in the Northern Alps!
A perfect blend! Skiing with a touch of the dolce vita! The only international ski area in the northern French Alps, the Espace San Bernardo has linked La Rosière with the Italian resort of La Thuile since winter 1983-1984.
Thanks to its cross-border position, the Espace San Bernardo ski area has slopes on both the north and the south faces of the mountain, guaranteeing excellent skiing and varied terrain. You might even want to brush up your Italian while on the slopes (though most Aosta Valley inhabitants speak excellent French and English)!

BUILDING PROJECTS La Rosière is currently being further developed, with a selection of new projects that blend seamlessly in with the village spirit and adhere to the resort’s carefully-planned expansion.
Chalet Grivola**** Scheduled to open in December 2017.

VILLAGES
A village in bloom!
Formerly mountain pastures
The resort is determined to obtain a second “Villes et Villages Fleuris” flower. This classification is awarded for the quality of the summer flower displays in French towns and villages, but also recognises the commune’s commitment to sustainable development. All projects that promote the respect and protection of nature are considered.
The resort of La Rosière is built upon areas of Alpine pasture dotted with high-altitude rustic chalets. The resort has been developed gradually, primarily by the inhabitants of Montvalezan and its villages. Unlike other resorts in the area, La Rosière’s development has been spread over many years, meaning that the resort has preserved its unique atmosphere and has managed to ensure that its new buildings blend into the Alpine setting.
Le Roc Noir Prestige accommodation in the heart of the resort, extension planned for 2017.
Hôtel des
Deux Domaines****
4-star hotel in Les Eucherts. Scheduled to open in February 2017.
ACTIONS
Environmentally-friendly approach
1.
Very early on, the commune established a “Molok” rubbish system (sunken waste containers) so that waste could be sorted and recycled. Today, La Rosière’s various neighbourhoods have a total of 29 “Molok” waste containers. But that is not all: the commune pays great attention to its visual environment, which is why these waste containers are clad in stone.

Les Marmottons****
Apartment complex nestled in the forest above the resort centre. Due to open in December 2016.
(rating being processed)
Le Hameau de Barthélemy
Luxury accommodation located in Les Eucherts, due to open in December 2017.
2.
STATE OF MIND 7
The benefits of shared transport Every 15 minutes, you can catch a bus to the slopes or back to your accommodation. This ski bus network, which serves the neighbourhoods of Les Eucherts, L’Averne, Le Gollet, Le Centre and La Maison du Ski as well as the Campsite (specific timetable), enables visitors to leave their car in the car park or, better still, travel to resort by train. From Bourg Saint Maurice train station, you can catch a bus or get a taxi up to La Rosière.
3.
To decorate the resort, we try to plant flowers in large flower beds as opposed to small pots. This approach is not only more natural, but it also means that the flowers are free to bud again in the spring.

Marc Maitre was born in Montvalezan in 1956, just four years before the very first drag lift, Poletta, was erected, which marked the birth of La Rosière’s ski area. Like many local inhabitants, Marc has been involved in the resort’s development, both as an artisan and as a member of La Rosière’s ski patrol for the last 45 years.

Manu Gaidet
Honours list: 14 years on the World Cup circuit, Olympic silver-medallist in the giant slalom in 2006 (Turin), 1 World Cup title and 3 podiums, 3 French championship titles in the giant slalom.
Honours list: Three-time Freeride Skiing World Champion (2003, 2004, 2005); winner of multiple World Cup titles.
Current situation: I’m currently a coach for the FFS and train the women’s team. I started working on the lifts when I was 14 or 15, first as extra staff during the school holidays, then full time. In 1974, I trained to be a ski patroller. That year, there were only three of us working in the resort. What skills do you need to be in the ski patrol? Above all, you need to enjoy your job and like helping people. It’s a very interesting job because no two days are the same. We rescue people, of course, but not just that. We are also responsible for slope security and signage. And, since we’re outside all the time, you have to like bad weather! My favourite thing is going out in a storm to trigger avalanches… It’s at times like this that you really feel at one with the mountains. Can you describe a typical day at work? Well, it all depends on the weather. If snow is forecast, and depending on the strength and direction of the wind, we prepare a PIDA (intervention plan for triggering avalanches). We then get organised into teams and decide who is going to set off the explosives. After that we open the slopes, provide rescue services, maintain the slopes and ensure they are safe, then close the slopes in the evening.
STATE OF MIND 13
How has the job of ski patroller changed over the last 40 years? In the beginning, we were always cold. There was nowhere we could go for shelter. Our equipment wasn’t suitable for the conditions. We just wore a windcheater and ski pants with leather boots. We spent the whole day outside… But since there weren’t any slope groomers, we did a lot of digging, which warmed us up a bit!
We secured the slopes and triggered avalanches on our skis. We didn’t have any explosives so PIDA plans didn’t exist! If the snow was powdery we used a scarf to cover our mouths, and attached a roll of rope with red tape around it to our belt. If things went wrong, we would throw the rope upwards in the hope that a bit of it would stay above the fallen snow so that someone could come and get us out. There were no walkie-talkies, so the rescue stations were positioned at the bottom of the slopes. If someone came to report an accident, we would go up the drag lift with them to go and find the injured person. In fact, the ski patrollers did a bit of everything on the ski area. We replaced the lift workers, prepared the slopes, cleared snow, did the first chairlift evacuations. Today, with the new ski lifts that transport more and more people at an ever greater speed, the jobs have been divided into sectors and specialised. Finally, what do you think about the evolution of La Rosière? The resort has grown, both in terms of buildings and ski area. But it has always done so in the right way, respecting the place in which we live. At the beginning, we thought it was a shame that the big investors were placing their money everywhere else… But in the end, that meant that we had to do everything ourselves. This took longer and was more effort, there’s no doubt, but today we can be proud that La Rosière has been developed gradually. There’s a reason that it’s the most beautiful! [laughs] Thank you Marc, and enjoy your retirement!
What does La Rosière mean to you? Manu Gaidet In my opinion, La Rosière is a fantastic resort with a truly authentic spirit. A rare jewel! Joël Chenal My whole family comes from Montvalezan. I’ve always lived here, which is why I’m so attached to this resort! For me, La Rosière is where I learned to ski, experienced my first sensations on the snow, my first competitions. It’s where I come to recharge my batteries, ski with my friends and show them around this sunny resort, which boasts some of the best snow cover in France! La Rosière is MY resort! How long have you been skiing? MG: I’ve been skiing since I was 2 ½ years old. I grew up in Le Châtelard village and my whole family comes from Montvalezan. I earned my stripes in La Rosière Ski Club. JC: I’ve been skiing since I was 3. I started out on the slopes of La Rosière with my mum, who’s a ski instructor with the ESF. What’s your favourite slope? MG: My favourite slope is Chevreuil. JC: My favourite slope is undoubtedly Chamois, because it’s long and the slope is quite varied. Any tips for enjoying La Rosière to the full? MG: Where to start?! In France or in Italy, there’s something for all tastes, great skiing whatever your level. From the Antigel to the Riondet, La Grotta... you can get to loads of good restaurants on easy slopes or harder ones for experts. La Rosière is an amazing resort. JC: A tip for off-piste skiing: Ski down the “Combe des Moulins" on a spring morning!
STATE OF MIND 14
Marc, how did you become a member of the ski patrol?

La Rosière’s ski area is tapping into this trend by creating three permanent touring trails close to the marked slopes (skiers can ski down the slopes, but are advised not to walk up them due to the risk of collision). Generally, people go ski touring in sites that are not joined to a resort, so the idea is to provide a place where ski touring fans can try out the discipline or train, while making them aware of the risks involved.
beaten track La Rosière is a resort full of surprises! Feel like a VIP as you explore the awe-inspiring off-piste playground. Take to the skies in a speed-riding session from the Fort and soar down the mountain face like an eagle! You can also make the most of one of the Alps’ most stunning snowkiting sites, on the Petit Saint Bernard pass! There’s plenty to get your adrenaline flowing in the Espace San Bernardo!

The Petit Trappeur trail is a great way for you and your children to take your first steps on snowshoes in safety. The trail starts half way along the forest footpath and follows a marked path up through the trees, where you can look for animal footprints in the snow. Safe, fun and highly original, snowshoeing is a great activity for all the family! Maps of La Rosière’s footpaths are available at La Rosière Tourist Office. If you fancy going further afield, why not join one of the snowshoe walks organised by the resort's professionals? In a small group, you will be shown a side of La Rosière and its villages that you have never seen before! Snowshoe walks of various intensities suitable for everyone, so that you can have fun while exploring the area.
SKI WITH SUPERVISION
HOW TO ENJOY your holiday THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT The resort’s hire shops all stock high-performance equipment that is light and easy to manoeuvre, making gliding down the slopes easier than ever! It is important to get some professional advice so that you choose the right equipment for your ability.
SKIS Whether you are a beginner, experienced or expert skier, you’ll need a pair of skis! Choose a pair that is suitable for your chosen activity (slope, off-piste, slalom, snowpark) and how often you want to ski. They should be comfortable and make skiing a pleasure while enabling you to improve in safety.
Find more information about the sport shops p.58 to 60
SAFETY AND SUN PROTECTION Helmets are not just for children! We strongly recommend that everyone wears a helmet on the slopes, even adults. Protect your eyes by wearing sunglasses or goggles in all weathers. Ask for advice in the sports shops to ensure that your eyewear has suitable UV protection for the mountain environment. Sun cream is essential: at altitude, even when it is cold, the UV levels are often very high. Protect your whole family’s skin!
PHYSICAL PREPARATION BEFORE YOUR HOLIDAY When you ski, your legs and knees have to work very hard, so it's important to strengthen them before your holiday. If you do not prepare your body correctly, you risk injuring yourself. Here are 5 training ideas for strong legs:
STATE OF MIND 21
• • • • •
Thighs: squats, lunges or wall sit Buttocks: squats, lunges, side leg lifts, balancing exercises on one leg Abs/back: plank, Roman chair, balancing exercises Calves: standing on one leg, go up onto your tip-toes then down again Once in resort, make sure you take care of your body when out on the slopes: Do some warm-up exercises before you head out, performing small circles in both directions, starting with the neck then shoulders, wrists, hips, knees and finally the ankles. Make sure you have something to drink at least every half hour. Have a good stretch when you’ve finished for the day, paying particular attention to the backs of the thighs. Make sure you rehydrate every half hour.

PREPARATION
ECOLE DU SKI FRANÇAIS
WHAT TO PACK Comfort, warmth and breathability are all vital features of ski clothing: on the slopes, a skier does not want to be too hot or too cold! Generally speaking, it’s a good idea to wear three layers of clothing: the base layer should be warm and breathable; the second should provide insulation; and the third should protect you from the cold, wind and humidity. Do not forget to pack gloves, a hat, helmet and sunglasses or ski goggles as well as suitable sun protection.
STATE OF MIND 22
SKI BOOTS ARE SACRED! Some more rigid than others, your boots should be comfortable while keeping the foot and ankle stable. It is important that you take the time to choose the right size boot, especially for children, who often favour boots that are too big.
Want to improve your skiing this winter? Take a few skiing lessons with one of the resort’s qualified instructors, to help you get the most out of your time on the slopes.

"Ever since I was little, I’ve always loved freestyle. Of course back then the discipline didn’t exist, but we made the whole ski area our snowpark! In 1995, along with a few other people from the resort, we created a snowboarding association in La Rosière (Ros’board), and organised parallel slalom races on the Lièvre Blanc slope. But we wanted to improve on this, so we asked the slope groomers to create a boarder cross next to Poletta drag lift. La Rosière’s snow park was born! At the beginning, the few features and cambered turns weren’t groomed very often, but as the years went on it was developed further and now 3 shapers manage the snow park, which has trails of various difficulties and is maintained every evening by the slope groomers! Once I became a qualified instructor, I took a group of local youngsters under my wing to teach them loads of different snow sport disciplines, and I used to take them to watch or compete in freestyle competitions. In autumn 2007, we created a Freestyle group in La Rosière with Sergio Mazeaud, and Julien Gaidet helped me to train the group that first winter. Today, I have 10 skiers aged between 10 and 16 in my group. We hold 55 training sessions over the winter and take part in competitions in other resorts."

During the winter, when they have time off from competing or filming, you might see Julien, Nathan or Luighi out on the resort’s slopes. The Freeski Playoffs is one of the highlights of the winter season. Some of the world’s best riders attempt to outdo each other in breathtaking displays of acrobatics, launching themselves over a huge jump created at the bottom of the slopes. A spectacular event that you won’t want to miss!
"The Big Air competition took place on Thursday afternoon with glorious sunshine, warm weather and good skiing conditions. Spectators came out en masse to watch the contest (around 1,500 people, according to the organisers) and the riders had a blast on the table, which offered unusually long air time. Relaxed and clearly delighted to be there, they focused on aesthetics, favouring highly stylised grabs and tricks.
Matt Walker even brought his cameraman along to film a few 'Slvsh' episodes and everyone made use of the kicker to do some shooting. Noah Wallace, James Woods and the other foreign riders who are less used to the Alps were bowled over and are sure to come back next year. This event could well become an unmissable date in the diary for riders who want a break from the stress of AFP and FIS competitions."

A perfect base for visiting the area! There are so many places you can visit using La Rosière as your base: France and Italy, Savoie and Haute-Savoie, mountains and lakes, relaxation and hiking… The Aosta Valley and its Italian charms are less than 20 minutes’ drive away, or escape to Annecy, the Venice of the Alps, which is less than 100km away.
SUMMERTIME IN THE MOUNTAINS The mountains are an ideal feel-good destination in the summer! Take some time out and enjoy a peaceful holiday at altitude. La Rosière is the perfect destination for recharging your batteries in peace, getting away from it all and appreciating the mountains and everything they have to offer. Unlike any other resort, La Rosière gives its guests the opportunity to discover two different cultures, French (Savoie) and Italian (Aosta Valley). In just half an hour by car, you can be in La Thuile. Just like La Rosière, this village resort has something for everyone, from exploring hiking trails to more sporting pursuits such as MTB, paragliding and rafting.

LA ROSIERE, A LAND MADE FOR BIKES
Benoit Cosnefroy is 20 years old and a member of Chambéry Cyclisme .
STATE OF MIND 43
“I was born in Cherbourg in Normandy. I started cycling and competing when I was 9 at the club in Bricquebec. Before I started cycling, I swam for 4 years but didn’t compete. I was also a member of a chess club for 3 years, and spent my time training and taking part in competitions in both chess and cycling. I don’t really have a speciality: I’m a good climber, rouleur and sprinter. I’m not the best in any domain, but I can hold my own on any terrain. I’m happy to be an all-rounder. My main objective for this season is to get back to peak physical fitness after my fall in the Tour du Pays de Savoie. I don’t have any particular races in mind, but one day I dream of becoming French champion and riding in the French champion’s jersey! In the long term, I’d like to turn professional and indulge my passion for cycling full-time. My best race memory is from last year, in the France Espoirs championship which was held in Normandy, 15 km from my parents’ house. It was my first race back after my bad fall in the Tour du Pays de Savoie. My family and friends took over and set up camp on the final climb. They were all wearing t-shirts saying “ALLEZ BEUBEU” (my nickname) and every time I passed them I had tears in my eyes. It was fantastic! I like La Rosière because it’s a ski resort but also a summer resort; it’s very family-oriented and the people are really friendly! I tried ski touring and enjoyed a picnic on the slopes: a really great moment in a magnificent setting. Unfortunately, I was unable to attend the summer course as I was injured, but the rest of the team told me that I’d missed out on something special!
RONAN PENSEC
CYCLE TOURING IN SAVOIE
Sporting honours list: 13 years cycling professionally, from 1985 to 1997, during which I took part in the Tour de France eight times, the Giro twice and the Vuelta once, plus 7 World Championship participations and a total of 28 wins. And now: I’m a consultant for the France Télévisions Group’s sports department, involved in all live-broadcast cycling events. I also manage an agency that organises cycling holidays that follow the stages of the Tour de France, Traversée des Alpes, etc. I organise events such as the “La Ronan Pensec” cycling competition, of which I am president and whose proceeds go to charities that help fight AIDs. You’ve skied in La Rosière for the last three winters. Can you tell us why? I really like La Rosière. It’s a very charming, family-oriented resort and is ideal for getting away from it all and enjoying a real family holiday. I like that it has preserved its mountain spirit, and also the attractiveness of its French-Italian ski area. Its landscapes, slopes and sunshine make it a really special destination.
If you are looking to explore the mountain culture, La Rosière acts as a gateway to Italy via the Petit Saint Bernard pass (2,188 m), offering exceptional, unhindered views over Italy’s Aosta Valley and Mont Blanc. Fresh mountain air at its best!
STATE OF MIND 44
La Rosière is an ideal base from which you can explore the neighbouring French and Italian mountain passes on a bike. It boasts a variety of itineraries through the Alps as well as plenty of roads that can be explored on pedal-powered or electrically-assisted bikes! In 2014 and 2015, the resort played host to a stage of the Tour de l’Avenir and has now set its sights on hosting the finish for one of the stages of the Tour de France. The resort has developed a partnership with Chambéry Cyclisme Formation, a centre which trains the rising stars of the cycling world and places them in professional teams, such as AG2R La Mondiale.
XC FOR EVERYONE IN LA ROSIERE! Cross-country mountain biking is often considered to be an elitist sport, but nowadays anyone can ride off the beaten track thanks to the advances made with regard to equipment and the appearance of electricallyassisted mountain bikes. A sport that was once reserved for experienced mountain bikers can now be enjoyed by anyone, meaning that groups of different abilities can explore the mountain trails together. So, whether you are an experienced rider or a Sunday cyclist, there is no excuse not to embark on an adventure around La Rosière’s fantastic network of MTB trails!
All of the trails are categorised by level, from the easiest blue trails up to the most difficult black ones. The Roches Noires and Ecudets chairlifts transport riders to the top of all the trails. La Rosière’s MTB area, also known as the Bikezone is made up of five DH (downhill) trails (1 blue, 2 red and 2 black) and five XC trails (4 blue, 1 red, 1 black), from which you can drink in stunning views of the Haute Tarentaise Valley, discover the charms of Montvalezan’s quaint villages or adventure through the emblematic Ecudets forest.
Some riders choose to explore the mountain biking trails on their own, either on their own bike or on one they have hired in resort, while others prefer to join a guided ride and benefit from tuition provided by the resort’s qualified MTB instructors.

Tour of the villages - n°12 (12 km)
Both invited to the Nine Knights MTB 2015, they wanted to round off their European trip with a completely different experience, leaving behind the super-charged atmosphere of this large-scale event to immerse themselves in the mountain environment and explore age-old trails. Because, though the most legendary bike parks are all found in North America, they are 100% artificial, created using small diggers. For KC and Grant, the idea of riding along trails that have been carved out over the centuries by shepherds, travellers and livestock was far too tempting to resist…
STATE OF MIND 47
KC already knew Courmayeur after skiing there, but this time wanted to hop over the border to brush up on his rusty French. For ten days La Rosière became his and Grant’s base, from which they would explore the surrounding mountainside. Guided by local mountain bikers, they kicked off their stay with a ride around the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass (alt.: 2,200m). Both of them were blown away by the changing colours and magnificent views of Mont Blanc. They were especially moved to learn about the history of the site, which displays traces of the numerous travellers and soldiers to have passed through the area. They then crossed over onto trails carpeted with pine needles leading down to the Italian village of La Thuile, free-wheeling down the slopes before stopping to enjoy a well-deserved “pizza margarita”.
The following day, a ride up to the Fort de La Redoute Ruinée (alt.: 2,383m) took them to the Combe des Moulins, whose paths offer a thrilling ride down the mountainside. They then pedalled through Montvalezan’s villages and forest down to the Ecudets chairlift, which transported them smoothly back to resort. It was a good opportunity to rest their legs, as it was now time to pack a rucksack for three days exploring the Beaufortain massif… The first day began with a climb up Mont Fortin (alt.: 2,758m) via Italy and the Chavannes Valley. KC and Grant were stunned by the beauty of the site, with the awe-inspiring Mont Blanc seemingly within touching distance. They were so busy shooting in this exceptional setting that the sun went down without them noticing, obliging them to ride down the Col de la Seigne (alt.: 2,516m) to the valley of the glaciers wearing a headlamp.

STATE OF MIND 48
KC Deane is one of those rare athletes who is as happy on skis as he is on a bike, as attested by his 44,200 Instagram followers. Grant Gunderson prefers to keep his eye firmly riveted to the viewfinder of his Canon 1Dx as he snaps the planet’s best riders on the snow or dirt.

Mt Fortin [ 2758m ] Col de la Seigne [ 2516m ] Tête Nord des Fours [ 2756m ]
After a great first day and a short night spent in a mountain refuge, the second day promised to be just as busy. The climb was a long one up to the Bonhomme refuge, passing through the Tête Nord des Fours (alt.: 2,756m). On several occasions, they had to strap their bikes to their backs as the gradient was too steep or the terrain too rough to ride. The sun hid behind a blanket of clouds which veiled the Crête
des Gittes (alt.: 2,538m) making it even more dangerous to cross, as the schist on the ground became wet and slippery. And with sheer drops on either side, they certainly did not want to lose their footing! But finally, the long descent down to the Cormet de Roselend (alt.: 1,968m) put a smile back on everyone’s faces, especially Grant’s, who once again delighted in the magical dusk light.

The third day’s itinerary took them lower in altitude but involved riding across large expanses of mountain pasture. It started at the Roselend dam, went through the Col du Pré (alt.: 1,703m) and finished at the Cormet d’Arêche (alt.: 2,019m) via St-Guérin lake. It was hot, and the herds of Tarine cows provided a bell-ringing soundtrack as they watched the bikes cruise past. The group drank in the views as they sat down for a breather in the shade of a rustic chalet. The trail back down to Roselend went through the Col de la Charmette and La Roche Parstire (alt.: 2,085m), alternating between pathways along mountain ridges and steep descents, where common sense forced the riders to

dismount from their bikes…all except for KC, who is highly experienced in defying such slopes, such as in the RedBull Rampage… Once again, the views of Mont Blanc at sunset made the group forget about their tired legs, which would enjoy a well-deserved rest after three days’ riding and almost 90km covered, with an uphill climb of 7,000m! KC and Grant left La Rosière delighted that they had fulfilled their objectives, with their heads (and memory cards!) full of an array of fantastic images, each one more breathtaking than the last. They both said that they cannot wait to come back!

Craftmanship and heritage Can you tell me a bit about your trade? I’ve been a self-employed artisan since 1988. I work as a carpenter all year round, but I also help to clear the snow and maintain the resort’s footpaths, mainly because I enjoy working in a team from time to time. In summer, my son works with me and my wife takes care of the paperwork. What made you choose this trade?
Most of my clients are the owners of holiday homes, and in recent years I’ve worked a lot on renovating chalets and apartments, which represents about 3/4 of my activity. What’s your connection with the resort? The resort is an important financial vehicle for local people. Its gradual, perhaps even slow, touristic development has enabled us to avoid any big mistakes but has also allowed the inhabitants of Montvalezan to be involved in this development. I’ve watched La Rosière expand - my father laid the foundations for the chalets in Le Gollet - and I’ve also
worked for the ski lift company. Today, I’m delighted to see that the younger generations are choosing to stay in the area and are settling here. It’s a real asset. Much more than just a job, it’s a way of life… I have a fascinating trade. It’s a family-run business, I’ve stayed close to my origins [Gilles was born in La Combaz] and I am helping to preserve this authenticity. I’m currently renovating the roof of my daughter’s house in the traditional style. For me, it was second nature to decorate the joists with the owner’s initials and the date the joists were fitted, just like our ancestors did.

Look round the St Jean-Baptiste church in Montvalezan Montvalezan, the commune that incorporates the resort of La Rosière, boasts a wealth of cultural heritage for those who seek to explore it. Take the time to stop off in Montvalezan to look round its 17th century Baroque church, where you can admire the coats of arms, altarpiece and golden or multi-coloured wood. In summer 2015, the town council unveiled the newly-repainted church, which has given the chapel a breath of fresh air and showcases the Baroque paintings on the pillars and arches. In summer, enjoy a relaxing walk around the church’s peaceful gardens. The church is not open at all times. Please see the Tourist Office for information about the opening dates and times.
METICULOUS DESIGN
HERITAGE IN THE SPIRIT OF THE TIMES
The type of wool used is vital in the manufacture of textiles. It comes exclusively from sheep living in the pastures of the four surrounding valleys: Tarentaise, Beaufortain, Maurienne and Aosta. This wool then undergoes a specific and religiously-choreographed procedure: selection, manual sorting, washing, dyeing, carding, spinning, weaving, cleaning. In total, no fewer than 24 steps are required in order to make Drap de Bonneval, Etoffe de Séez, Tissus des Alpes, Muletière and Toile des Aravis woollen cloths.
Ever since its creation, the Arpin Wool Mill has made textiles suited to the harsh mountain climate. Today, this company has managed to diversify its activity into interior decoration and fashion, creating resolutely modern clothing using ancestral textile art.
Guided tours of the mill are organised in July and August: Monday to Friday at 10:30am, 1:30 pm, 2:45pm and 4:000pm. Tarifs: 5 €/ad and 3 €/under 12. From December 1st, please check with the Tourist Offices of Séez and Bourg Saint Maurice for organizing your visit.
The Arpin Wool Mill is classed as an “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” (Living Heritage Company). This recognises the work the company has put in to preserve the ancestral methods, machines and production in France. And all this, just a stone’s throw away from La Rosière, in Séez!

What kind of people do you work for?
LIVING HERITAGE The venture began in 1817 with the creation of the Arpin family workshop (Jean-Baptiste and Alexis) in the commune of Séez, on the banks of the Torrent du Versoyen, a stream that provided the workshops with electricity. Since then, the manufacturing process of their wool has barely changed: men and machines continue to perform the ancestral techniques that have made the wool mill famous for over nearly two centuries and more than eight generations. Originally, the Arpin textiles were used to make shelters for Alpine expeditions, for example the expedition led by Victor Amédée II de Savoie across the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass. With the development of mountain tourism and as the populations moved higher up the mountain, the Arpin wool mill began to design robust, comfortable, hard-wearing and waterproof textiles (Bonneval cloth) that were quickly adopted by the guides who led the first Himalayan and Polar expeditions (Paul-Emile Victor expedition). Closer to home, for the Albertville Winter Olympic Games in 1992, the mill made blankets and jackets for the Olympic Committee.
A CHAT WITH GILLES MAITRE , WOODWORKER IN LE CHATELARD
Woodwork allows me to make a living from my passion. At age 5 or 6, I was already playing about with bits of wood so I enrolled for a vocational qualification in woodwork, which cemented my love of the subject and my desire to make it my profession. In 1988, I became self-employed and worked all around the Haute Tarentaise Valley. Nowadays, I only take jobs in Montvalezan and the resort of La Rosière. My job almost exclusively involves house interiors: I make stairs, wooden cladding, handrails for balconies, furniture, etc. I’m often in my workshop, which is underneath my house, preparing pieces, cutting logs, planing wood down, drying it. My workshop is very constricted because of the mountain environment and the road, but I wanted to it stay on the mountainside and in the heart of the village so that I could maintain a connection with mountain craftsmanship, with the people. My machines are fairly new, but I would rather stay close to my roots than move to a larger, more spacious workshop on a trading estate.

ROSIER
& SAINT BERNARD
Petit-Saint-Bernard Pass At an altitude of 2,188m, the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass or Colle del Piccolo San Bernardo marks the border between France and Italy. In summer, it can be accessed via La Rosière by car, bike or on foot, and in winter can only be reached on skis via the Espace San Bernardo ski area. When you go through the pass you cannot help but be moved by the beauty of the landscapes, and soon learn that the site has been an important venue for some historic events.
PETIT-SAINT-BERNARD HOSPICE
THE SAINT BERNARD DOG
Thanks to its cross-border position, the pass has been considered a strong strategic foothold since earliest Antiquity: a site for discussions, a site for conflicts, and also a site for storms.
Their distant origins have been blurred over the years, but these dogs undoubtedly originated in Asia, as descendants of the Tibetan Mastiff. Gifted with a natural instinct for rescuing and guarding, they have an easy-going character and are great with children. Because of their size, they need a lot of space and like to spend a lot of time with their owner. Every day, these dogs eat between 750 g and 1 kg of dog food! A huge but adorable canine. Adopted by monks in the 17th century to act as guard dogs on the Grand-Saint-Bernard pass, Saint Bernard dogs were soon trained to rescue travellers. In 1963, on the Petit-Saint-Bernard pass, Mr. Clément set up home in La Chanousia to breed these dogs. But the difficult weather conditions pushed him to accept an invitation from Jean and Hélène Arpin to stay at the Relais du Petit-Saint-Bernard (La Rosière), where he continued to breed dogs. Today, in La Rosière, you can meet the resort’s Saint Bernard dogs, which are an integral part of the village’s iconography and history. Goya from Chalet Accroche Coeur (who you can see at the resort’s welcome meetings and standing at the sign just as you arrive in resort), Boréal and Cybèle (who live opposite the Relais du Petit-Saint-Bernard and whom you can accompany on walks organised by the association in winter), and newcomers Loyd (who lives at the Hospice) and Lilou, who you might spot walking around resort.
In 1993, an association created by Jean-Luc Penna – the current Mayor of Séez – put the wheels in motion to restore the Hospice. A collaborative project run by this association, the interconnected communities of the Haute Tarentaise, the department of Savoie, La Thuile and the Ordre Mauricien led to the restoration of the building. Since 2014, the building has recovered its original mission as a place providing hospitality, although pilgrims have now been replaced by hikers, tourists and other travellers who choose to eat or spend the night in this building steeped in history. The Hospice also houses a tourist information point, which provides information and documentation about the Haute Tarentaise, as well as temporary exhibitions.

It was back in the 11th century that Saint Bernard de Menthon, under the tutelage of the Aosta Valley, had the Petit-Saint-Bernard hospice built. A hospice was a religious house that welcomed in pilgrims. Over the years, the building has suffered greatly at the hands of history and the climate.
