What skills do you need to be a ski patroller? Above all, you need to enjoy your job and like helping people. It’s a very interesting job because no two days are the same. We rescue people, of course, but not just that. We are also responsible for slope security and signage. And, since we’re outside all the time, you have to like bad weather! My favourite thing is going out in a storm to trigger avalanches… It’s at times like this that you really feel at one with the mountains.
How has the job changed over the last 40 years? In the beginning, we were always cold. There was nowhere we could go for shelter. Our equipment wasn’t suitable for the conditions. We just wore a windcheater and ski pants with leather boots. We spent the whole day outside… But since there weren’t any slope groomers, we did a lot of digging, which warmed us up a bit! We secured the slopes and triggered avalanches on our skis. We didn’t have any explosives so PIDA plans didn’t exist! If the snow was powdery we used a scarf to cover our mouths, and attached a roll of rope with red tape around it to our belt. If things went wrong, we would throw the rope upwards in the hope that a bit of it would stay above the fallen snow so that someone could come and get us out.

JUNIOR ACADEMY
LEARN TO FREESTYLE AGE 5+
The Junior Academy gives teenagers the opportunity to try their hand at freestyle and freeride. Over 4 half-days they will have fun improving their technique as they learn all about the mountain environment and the safety measures that can help them to manage the risks involved. To guarantee top-quality tuition, groups are limited to 8 teens.
With its ground-level features (20cm high), the Lièvre Blanc Mini Snowpark is an ideal place for budding young freestylers to perfect their tricks in a safe environment. With their parents or accompanied by a qualified instructor, young freestylers can tackle the features and develop their agility as they have fun...and potentially go on to become freestyling champions!
Fun in the snow for your little ones!
The Galopins Kids’ Club is committed to making sure your children have fun, make new friends and try a host of different activities in a safe environment: skiing, sledging, snowman-making, snowshoeing, and much more. The Galopins offers childcare with or without skiing lessons for children aged 3 to 13, plus a Baby Club nursery for little ones (from 18 months) for half-days or full days. PETIT SAINT BERNARD TRAIL
Putting on skis for the very first time can be quite daunting, so here in La Rosière we have four free ski lifts (Clarines 1, Dahu and Manessier drag lifts; Lutins magic carpet) so that beginners can learn to ski at their own pace on dedicated nursery slopes. The Lutins magic carpet gently transports tiny tots to the top of a green slope so that they can get a feel for gliding on snow. Once they have mastered the green slope, they can progress onto the Marmottons blue slope using the same lift. Children can take the magic carpet with their family or on their own, under the watchful eye of a parent or grandparent!
It’s a well-known fact that the younger you are, the faster you learn. Hence why ESF La Rosière is offering beginner snowboarding lessons especially for children aged 4 to 7, so that from age 8 they can progress into the “standard” snowboarding courses. In groups of a maximum of 5 children, these fun-filled hour-long lessons are taught in a secure and speciallydesigned area. Head to one of the resort’s shops to hire special equipment for your budding boarder. It’s what all the kids are talking about in La Rosière! Head up the Lièvre
