Olympic Games

Good news for women who enjoy boxing. The IOC has opened the door to allow boxing into the Olympics as a true sport, which of course it is. It would be interesting to see how many boxers there are in the world or indeed in Canada. Initially of course, the level of boxing will be pretty thin and it will take time to grow. Look at the women’s marathon; who would have thought that the gap between the very best male would one day be about 15 minutes ahead of the very best woman? No doubt female boxing will go the same way. Medals initially will, relatively speaking, be tough to come by, but as time goes by the women will get better and the standards will rise. Countries who excel will follow that pattern that the male boxers followed - USA, Cuba, Mexico, Europe, Africa et al. This is the pattern that followed women’s soccer as it grew, until now the standard of women’s soccer is excellent and being played in many countries. Also voted into the games as true participants: 7‑a‑side Rugby; Beach Volley Ball and Triathlon. While everyone can congratulate the IOC on this push forward, the family is still a long way away from being united. Example, Saudi Arabia. Women are not allowed to watch leave alone play sports. Religion of course plays a part in this, but while some girls/women can rejoice, some can only sit and wonder, if only .... IAAF ‑ Paula Radcliffe

by

Cecil Smith

The IAAF has decided to let Paula Radcliffe keep her marathon world record from 2003, after previously saying it would reduce one of athletics’ outstanding performances to a world best because the English runner set the mark in a race with men. IAAF Council member Helmut Digel told The Associated Press that the governing body will keep the mark in the books despite an August decision to only recognize records achieved in all‑women races from now on. “The record will stay. Nobody will cancel the record of Paula. That is sure,” Digel said in a telephone interview after an IAAF meeting in Monaco. “Her record will never be diminished.” The rule change is still set to come into effect next year, but Digel said Radcliffe’s existing record will now be allowed to stand. The rule change had led to several calls for Radcliffe’s record to be kept since the plans were announced at the world championships in Daegu, South Korea. Digel said the IAAF was taken aback by the vehemence of the protests, and that the rule wasn’t meant to diminish previous performances. “It was not against old records at all,” he said. “We realize that these performances were excellent performances.” Radcliffe ran a time of 2 hours, 15.25 minutes at the London Marathon in 2003, a stunning performance which is still 1 minute, 53 seconds faster than the second‑best time in history, which Radcliffe also holds. The second‑fastest runner of all time is Kenya’s Catherine Ndereba, who was 3:22 slower in 2001. The issue for the IAAF is that Radcliffe ran the London race with male pacemakers, which the Athletics

Many in the sport agree that women run marathons faster when paced by men, since keeping up with men can provide a target to aim for. Running in a group of men can also be less tiring if they shield the athlete from incoming wind. Drugs If Ben Johnson sees this, his heart rate will surely accelerate. It now appears that the IOC’s Court of Arbitration has been told that their life ban on an athlete is “unenforceable”! The IOC rule 45 created in June 2008 had barred athletes who had received a doping suspension of more than six months from competing at the next Olympic Games. The Americans would be interested in this ruling, because of the situation surrounding LaShawn Merritt, the 2008 400m Olympic Champion (43.75) who under the existing Olympic rules cannot compete in London. America for sure will challenge this ruling and push for change to allow Merritt to compete. Britain on the other hand (Dwain Chambers) will not push for change. IAAF AOY IAAF Athletes of the year: Usain Bolt and from Australia, Sally Pearson. Bolt, it can be said jokingly, went from a false start to winning it all when it counted. He is now setting his sights on 4 golds in London! Bondarchuk and Laroche receive Coaching Excellence Awards Athletics Canada is proud to announce that Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk and Jean Laroche were recognized on among a group of very deserving coaches with the Petro‑Canada Coaching Excellence Award. The

awards were presented as part of the Coaching Association of Canada’s Sport Leadership conference in Toronto. The Coaching Excellence Awards are presented to coaches whose athletes won medals over the past year at open World Championships, Olympic Games, World Games, or Paralympic Games. “Each one of these coaches exemplifies what the Coaching Association of Canada stands for,” stated John Bales, Chief Executive Officer for the CAC. “They are dedicated individuals that push themselves harder and harder each day by planning, researching, and actively listening so that they can be better for their athletes. We are truly proud of these award winners.” Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk is the lead coach at the High Performance Training Centre in Kamloops, B.C., and is the personal coach of Dylan Armstrong. Under Bondarchuk’s close tutelage Armstrong enjoyed the greatest season by a throwing athlete in Canada’s long athletics history. “We use hand signals and broken English, it’s kind of a special thing. When you’ve been with a guy every day for six years you understand each other very well,” Armstrong said of his Ukrainian born coach. Armstrong won silver at the World Championships, took first place in the shot put in the Diamond League, won gold at the Pan American Games setting a new Games record and holds the season’s best performance at

Jean Laroche, Lead Coach at the High Performance Centre in Sherbrooke, Que., coached Diane Roy of Sherbrooke, Que., to gold at the IAAF World Championships. Roy took first place in the T54 classification wheelchair 800‑metres in a time of 1:50.91 in front of a crowd of close to 70,000 spectators. Roy also won a pair of silver medals at the IPC World Championships in the T54 wheelchair 400‑metres and 1500‑metres events. At those same championships Laroche coached the men’s T53 wheelchair 4x400‑metres relay team to a bronze medal. Historical Moments in Canadian Track & Field Canada’s First Active Involvement In A Drug Disqualification! The Joan Wenzel case (1975 Pan Am Games) The disqualification of Joan Wenzel in the 800m, and the removal of the bronze medal she had won in the event, focused attention on the anti‑doping control set up at every major Games. By accident, Wenzel had taken a cold pill (“Dimetap”), prescribed by her home doctor, which was in a bottle of vitamin tablets. After finishing third in the 800m, she was routinely tested (along with the other medallists and additional competitors selected at random) for drugs on the list of substances forbidden by the international track and field body, the IAAF. The test for ephedrine was positive, and a recheck confirmed the result, so according to international rules Wenzel was automatically disqualified and lost her medal. In addition, she was not allowed to run on the winning 4x400m relay team, where she was replaced at the last moment by Joanne McTaggart. Athletics

January / February 2012

After the Games, the disqualification was reported (as required by the rules) to the IAAF, and they disqualified Wenzel for life (again as required by the rules). The tests used are only designed to test for the presence of the forbidden substances, not to measure the amount of the substance. In Wenzel’s case, the amount contained in the pill was minimal and could not have had an effect on performance. According to team manager Dr. Doug Clement, himself a physician, the net effect of the pill would have been negative, since it contained antihistamines which have a tendency to make you drowsy. However, the rules are designed to prevent athletes hurting themselves by dosing themselves with the substances in the hope (even if unjustified) of improving their performance. Consequently, any use of any substance on the IAAF list is forbidden. Wenzel was no doubt careless in taking the cold tablet (the team medical staff had warned all athletes not to take any medication without getting it cleared, for precisely this reason). Whether such carelessness deserves the string of punishments that have rained down on her seems doubtful. The CTFA should make every effort to have Wenzel reinstated as soon as possible (DL). In April of ’76 Wenzel was reinstated for competition, as for the medal … refused. But Wenzel and her coach Arthur Taylor were not interested in the medal, their eyes were locked on the Sudbury ’76 Olympic Games in Montreal. Reflections on the Canadian National Endurance Conference

I

by Dave Christiani

really enjoy fine wines. I have champagne tastes, but unfortunately, my purchasing power is limited by my beer budget. Consequently I use assorted wine rating systems, unique to various wine writers, to help ensure value per dollar spent. Robert Parker uses a 100 point system, in which 90-95 points would translate to “an outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character”. I recently had the privilege of attending the 2011 Canadian National Endurance Conference in Vancouver, and to steal from Parker, I would give the conference a score of 94. The aim of the conference was to present various endurance systems, programs and approaches, and to stimulate discussion among coaches around these ideas. The intent was to help coaches understand how to plan and develop high performance programs to better serve the athletes they work with. One hundred and forty coaches, representing each of the provinces, and six from outside Canada, attended. We were challenged to think critically about how we coach. By attending, each was investing in themselves, and their athletes, and demonstrating their commitment as life-long learners, to self discovery and improvement. Most, if not all, left the conference, armed with assorted new ideas and perspectives on how to plan for success. Featured speakers included Alberto Salazar, Margo Jennings and James Li. Among the three, and the other presenters on the program, each of the endurance events were represented; their discussions focused 18

on programming and the career development of noted athletes within each event discipline. Salazar spoke to the 5000m, 10 000m and marathon events, using Galen Rupp and Dathan Ritzenhein as his principal examples. Jennings, retired from active coaching, presented programs designed for Maria Mutola and Kelly Holmes in her discussion on the 800m event, and James Li spoke about Bernard Lagat’s 1500m program and career development. By the end of the conference, I was happy I had made the decision to attend. Alberto Salazar, like Margo Jennings and James Li, has a unique talent for coaching. It stems from his love for the sport. His mercurial personality, presentation style and unlimited experiential knowledge are second only to this talent. What makes him a formidable coach is his lack of ego. He is not only smart, but also lucky to have the resources to hire someone like Steve Magnus as the Oregon Project’s assistant coach and scientific advisor. Steve is Robin to Alberto’s Batman. His talent and his considerable sport science background make a major contribution to the Project. It was apparent their talents are mutually supportive. Together they create a synergy that is not only enviable, but also instructional for those hoping to create a viable IST model. Of all the sessions, the most informative were those devoted to annual planning. Though technical in nature and designed for national and international level athletes, there was something to be learned that would be useful for every level of athlete. Planning a yearly program can be daunting to the inexperienced. Among Athletics

January / February 2012

the three main presenters, there were many similarities in programming. Each demonstrated how they broke their programs into the basic component parts; for example, Li’s Element’s of Training and Salazar’s Ladder Concept. Breaking a yearly plan into its component parts, in this manner, with clearly stated objectives per cycle, reduces a complex puzzle into simpler, more manageable pieces. It’s very much like solving a puzzle. You start with a basic system or approach. However, that alone doesn’t always guarantee a solution. Yearly plans, like puzzles, can be difficult. There will be instances where more than a rudimentary framework is necessary; imbalances between components, timing, race obligations, and perhaps, opposing forces interacting, complicate the plan. You are forced to think outside the box to individualize the plan. The record clearly shows that Salazar, Jennings and Li have all been very successful in this regard. The conference affirmed for me that all coaches are the same in some basic manner, no matter the level of program delivered. The best coaches, focus on excellence, not on improving weaknesses at the expense of excellence. When Galen Rupp first started formal training with Salazar he was an accomplished soccer player with considerable athleticism. How many of us would have continued to develop this aspect of his abilities as opposed to focusing on improving the areas where he was weakest? Also, it was comforting to hear we all steal the ideas of others. For example, Jay Johnson admitted to stealing other ideas to arrive at his perspective on strength training. He admitted it’s not new. It’s just a hybrid. James Li attended most, if not all of the main sessions, and took extensive notes. Salazar confessed that, “I’ve not invented anything. I just learn from others.” We all see the world through our own lens, our own perspective. We find ways to reframe new material, to make it workable for

our own unique style or situation. One session that I particularly enjoyed, apart from the three main speakers, was the presentation by Peter Thompson called, New Interval Training. Prior to the conference I had researched the concept and even designed, what in retrospect turned out to be, a poor first attempt at modifying a conventional workout to the “new style”. However, Thompson’s clear and concise explanation clarified any misconceptions I may have had. My new understanding was enough that the following day my morning swim in the hotel pool turned into a Lactate Shuffle workout. Thankfully, there were no spectators or stopwatches! As with every review, I feel there must be criticism. Nobody is perfect. Mine is directed at the Athletics Canada Phoenix high performance centre. I have never been totally enamored with AC’s centre-based high performance concept, particularly as it applies

Kenyan Star Runner Loses Feet To Frostbite

A

top college runner from Kenya who spent two days lost in an Alaska snowstorm earlier has lost both his feet to frostbite. Marko Cheseto, a two-time NCAA All-American runner, disappeared on Nov. 6 after leaving the University of Alaska campus during a storm. He walked into a hotel more than 48 hours later severely hypothermic and suffering from frostbite. Despite attempts to save the 28year-old star athlete’s feet, doctors had to amputate them both, the University said.

to the middle distance events. My opinion remains unchanged after this conference. The Vancouver conference was an opportunity to showcase or at the very least demonstrate the Phoenix High Performance Direction. Their stated mandate is to provide “established and program specific IST systems under lead coach” (May 7/2009), and “better integration of our specific sport medicine and sport science program with (and within) our selected centres” (May 7/2009). Instead, one year after Gary Reed’s retirement and four years since his last Olympics, his 800m annual plan is still offered up as the standard. In a coaching world where I believe you are only as good as your last microcycle, I can’t accept this from a group that is supposed to be the top rung of a “top down” approach for Canadian middle distance. As an old mentor coach of mine once said, “If you’re still talking about yesterday’s successes, you haven’t done anything lately.” By contrast, Salazar, Darren Treasure (sport psych) and Steve Magnus Cheseto, in his first public statement since he was found, thanked the university, city and volunteers who searched for him during his “troubled times.” “As some may know, I’ve been going through a lot of personal issues,” the runner said in a statement released through the university. “While I am still recovering, both physically and emotionally, I will do my very best to give back to the community that has helped me so much and to my home country, Kenya,” he said. “I sincerely apologize for any problems that I may have caused.” His time at the school has not been without tragedy. A close friend and fellow Kenyan runner, William Ritekwiang, committed suicide in February. The pair were among several Kenyan runners who have helped Athletics

(sport scientist) demonstrated the kind of IST we are told works in concert in Phoenix. The mutual respect among the three, and the integration of their unique skills and roles was evident and clearly contributes to the higher performance standards of the project athletes. I would have liked to see the same from the Phoenix group. Finally, a big thank you must be given to all concerned with the planning and running of the conference. It’s a shame registration was limited. Not only did I come home with many new ideas, including some serious iPhone and iPad Apps, but I also had the privilege of meeting and conferring with many coaching friends all in one place. I look forward to using and sharing the new ideas. For those who were not able to attend, all presentations, audio and video (including the PowerPoint slides) will be posted on the Canadian Athletics Coaching Centre’s website, http://www.athleticscoaching.ca/, in the New Year. k turn the university into a cross-country and elite powerhouse. Cheseto’s disappearance triggered an intensive search in the bush and trials surrounding the University of Alaska and Alaska Pacific University campuses. Authorities said they still don’t know why Cheseto walked out into the storm wearing only jeans and a light coat or even where he was. “We still haven’t been able to account for all of the time he was gone,” university athletic director Steve Cobb said. Cheseto, in addition to his success on the track, has been honoured for his academic achievements while at the university, where he is studying nursing and nutrition and has maintained a near-perfect grade point average.

Julie Labonte

my father as much as I could when I had time. I would have class during the day, then a volleyball practice, then I would have weights or a shot put practice, eat, do homework, and then sleep. It was a busy schedule but I was determined to become a good athlete. It was not until CEGEP that I decided to focus solely on track and field.

by Andrew Maloney

ulie Labonte is a thrower from SteJustine, Quebec, who holds the Canadian youth, junior, and senior shot put records. Her personal best of 18.31m in the event was set at the 2011 NCAA Championships. After completing CEGEP, she accepted a scholarship to study and train at the University of Arizona.

AM: Did you ever see yourself breaking a Canadian youth, junior or senior record and finishing second at the Pan American Junior Games in 2009? JL: For all of them, I was very excited but when I beat the senior record it was one of the best accomplishments of my life. It was at the NCAA Championship in Des Moines, Iowa. It was nice to think that after making the senior national mark and also the ‘A’ standard for World Championships in Korea that I was able to say that I was the best woman who threw the shot put in Canada. It was not easy to achieve that. I had to make a lot of sacrifices and spend hours practicing my sport and lifting heavy weights but it was worth it because I would not be where I am right now.

AM: What got you involved in the sport of track and field? JL: Like any high school student, I did a lot of sports, such as volleyball, basketball, hockey, softball, and dance. It wasn’t until the age of 13 that I tried track and field. In our physical education classes, we would try sprinting, distance running, and jumping, but I was built differently than the other kids so I just started throwing shot put and discus. My father had thrown the javelin and high jumped, so when he saw me at the provincial high school meets he could see I had potential as a thrower. Early in high school, I was already strong and my dad asked me if I wanted to start throwing the shot put because when I played softball he saw that I was able to throw the ball very far (laughs).

Championship. After that experience, I decided to quit other sports to focus only on track and field and volleyball. My last two years of high school, I practiced shot put with

Daniel Labonte

Once a year, I would go with my physical education group in high school to different regional and provincial meets and I was doing very well. So after four years of high school somebody asked me why I wasn’t doing any provincial or national club meets? I did not know what those were at the time so I tried to communicate with somebody and they told me that if I throw on a certain day and place first, that will qualify me to compete in Edmonton, Alberta at the Canadian Youth Championship. I was scared because I knew it would be very strong competition and I was not

The Pan Am Juniors in Trinidad & Tobago were also fun. I was second behind the American, Anna Jelmini, who now competes at Arizona State. I see her a lot in the NCAA circuit and we are doing a lot of competitions together because she goes to the rival school.

JL: I had a lot of friends who competed in the NCAA Division I and they told me that some schools had very good programs. So I decided to take my English tests (SAT and TOEFL) and with that I was able to go visit some universities. I visited the University of North Carolina, Charlotte, and the University of Arizona. After visiting Arizona, seeing the campus, talking with my future teammates and coaches, I knew this would be a great fit for me. I talked to the throws coach, Craig Carter, and he told me about his program and

introduced me to the team and I felt already a part of the Wildcat family. AM: How has the transition been in Arizona? JL: The transition was very good. At first, talking to everyone and expressing my opinions was very hard but after a few weeks, I already felt like I was a part of the family. We had so much help from coaches, advisors and even my family was encouraging me in the pursuit of my dreams. AM: What technical changes did you make to reach the next level over the last two years?

me to get stronger and faster. During my competition, I try to stay strong mentally and just do what I have to do. I keep reminding myself that I practiced a lot and I know what I worked on and it’s not time to think. It is only time to do what I did at practice. AM: What are your goals and aspirations heading into 2012? JL: My goals for 2012 are to have a strong indoor season so it will help me for my outdoor season. I started training two weeks after Worlds in Korea in August and I am working hard to ameliorate my technique, to get stronger, and to increase my speed. My main goal for 2012 is the Olympic Games. Every movement that I execute every day will help me in the pursuit of my dream. So when it’s hard I just keep reminding myself that there is no easy way to achieve your goals. If I want to be on the Canadian team to go to London this summer, I need to stay strong and healthy and continue to work hard. k

JL: In the last two years, I have changed a lot. I now train with a group of exceptional female athletes. Training with them helps me to push myself and even go to the next level. I worked a lot on my technique, my speed, and also my strength. Working small areas of my technique, such as focusing on my legs or my shoulders, has also helped me to increase my performance. I have a very good relationship with Craig Carter. I know Supplying Tyvek Bib Numbers and a Full Range he is a good coach of Track & Field Equipment & Uniforms and I am confident about what we are doing and that it will help me in my development. AM: What do you still need to work on the most in practice 1 and/or competition? JL: During my practices, I tried mainly to focus on perfecting my technique when I have a shot put practice. I work with different weights and different implements during different periods and it has helped Athletics

r. Anatoly Bondarchuk is renowned as an athlete (1972 Olympic champion and European champion in the hammer throw as well as a former world record holder), and his coaching credentials are virtually unprecedented in the world of athletics. He holds a doctorate of pedagogical science from the University of Kiev, and his research into technique and high‑performance training methods formed the basis for many of the common techniques and practices used by the world’s top athletes today. Dr. Bondarchuk developed the USSR National Team throws program from 1976‑1992 from which he produced numerous world and Olympic

champions in the hammer, discus, and shot put. He has authored eleven books and 195 articles in his areas of expertise. A common focus of these documents is training to maintain performance and technique. Since 1992, Dr. Bondarchuk has been coaching for Portugal and Kuwait.

YJ: How do you distinguish between general exercises and the different grades of specialized exercises?

Recently I had the opportunity to speak with him. My interview with him follows.

AB: General exercises have little relevance to the sporting action. Specialized preparatory exercises use the same muscles that are involved in a particular sporting action. Specialized developmental exercises include single joint actions that duplicate one portion of the sporting action. They also mirror the velocity and range of motion seen in the competitive movement. Competitive exercises are those that fully mimic the competitive movement in more difficult conditions and easier ones. YJ: There is much debate about how

AB: Part of this is intuition on the part of an experienced coach. After coaching many athletes, a wise coach will recognize this graduation. In a general sense, those athletes who have shown to improve at a rapid pace over a certain amount of time are considered high level. This would generally take no less than five years of training.

YJ: Having been in the western hemisphere for a while now, what do you see as the biggest differences between sports science here and in the Eastern Bloc/Soviet Union? AB: The system in the east is better because coaches there are much more qualified in their training. They also share ideas with each other and communicate with the various researchers. In the west, everyone seems to be secretive, and there is very little

YJ: What are the virtues of maximal work as opposed to sub‑maximal work? AB: Both have their place in the yearly scheme. However, maximal work can be overdone. It should only account for about 10 percent of the total volume of work. Therefore, it should be used wisely. Both sub‑maximal and maximal work can be involved in the same workout. Their order of performance can also be flip‑flopped.

Dr. Bondarchuk received a coaching award from Athletics Canada Chairman Gord Orlikow in 2011

AB: One example is the hammer throw. It uses lighter and heavier implements that have a positive transfer on each other. On the other hand, any isometric exercises have a negative transfer on the rest of training. YJ: As you know, steroid use is credited for much of the Soviet success. How do you respond to this assertion? Claus Andersen

YJ: What supplements did you find valuable? AB: We found that using the whole complex of vitamin B could help add 3‑4 meters to a throw.

YJ: Can you give examples of exercises that have positive transfers on one another and those that have negative transfers?

also important to note that steroids help add 5‑6 meters to a throw but no more. As time went on, we found different supplements to be more valuable than steroids.

AB: Ironically, steroid use started in the United States in the 1950s with many bodybuilders. It then seeped into the athletic world. It didn’t pervade Europe and Asia until the early 1970s. Those in the west had better knowledge of steroids and were using them at least as much as the rest of the world. It’s

YJ: Where do you think that sports will find answers for improved performances in the future? AB: We must find ways to improve technique and also develop more exercises to enhance special strength. Specialized strength is the means to getting more out of our work. YJ: With this in mind, how much work do you think is being done in the area of technique analysis and the development of special strength? AB: Although it is of utmost importance, nearly nothing is being done in the United States. YJ: Thank for your time, Dr Bondarchuk. MASTERS ATHLETICS National Masters Championships are held annually in Canada in Cross Country, Road Racing (10K, Half Marathon, Marathon), and Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field. The essence of masters competition is that all events are contested in 5 year age groups – from 30-34 and older. The events are open to all - there is never a qualifying standard, and the top three Canadians in each age group receive championship medals. Besides the National meets, athletes can compete in US Masters meets, North American Championships, and World Masters Championships (held every two years for those 35 and older). Some of the provinces also have vigorous masters programs. The Canadian Masters Athletic Association administers national championships and compiles national records in all events and age groups. Markl first became interested in the idea of producing an ethical clothing line when he was researching textiles factories in Honduras as part of his Ph.D. “I always wondered why ‘ethical’ clothing lines were so focused on concentrating operations in America or Europe. The Kourage team pride themselves on being one of the most ethical athletic apparel company in the world, according to Markl. 24

Rel-Event History

Non Standard Events (Part V)

by Roman Olszewski

T

here are three standard relay events conducted in international outdoor competitions for women: 4x100m, 4x400m and the Medley Relay. The latter consists of 100m-200m-300m-400m legs and is held exclusively for Youth athletes. In addition to these events, the IAAF recognizes world records in the open 4x200m and 4x800m. Canadian records can currently be set in the same events plus the women’s 4 x 1500m (which is available to the men as a world record event). With the exception of the 4x100m, women’s relay events have not had a long history in Canada. It wasn’t until the mid 1960’s that the 4x200m (and 4x220 yards) event appeared in the record book. The inaugural Canadian record performance accepted was Vancouver Olympic Club’s 1:43.1, set over 880 yards (=8:04.7m) in Vancouver on August 7. Another foursome from the same club broke the metric and yard records in Vancouver in mid 1968 by running 1:41.6. Interestingly, Thelma Fynn (Wright), who was to become one of Canada’s greatest distance runners, was the anchor on that team. The VOC record (at least the metric one) was broken less than two months later in London, Ontario by the Scarborough Central Lions club, which ran 1:40.8. The 4x200m record was tied and the 4x220y record was broken in 1972 by four new runners from Scarborough Central Lions: Wendy Braiden, Laura Mitchell, Roberta Burley, and Emily McMullen. In 1974 another Lions team composed of Janet Morris, Leah Harvey, Bev Krotowski and Teresa White ran 1:40.7 to break the metric version and in 1976 yet another Scarborough Central Lions team, this one consisting of Leah Harvey, Joanne McLeod, Sandra Curt and Bev Krotowski, claimed another metric record with a 1:38.4 performance in Etobicoke.

Angela Bailey, Angella Taylor, Molly Killingbeck and Joanne McTaggart tackled the 4x2 at Bourges; they hammered the record, running 1:32.85. That would still be the composite team record today if it were not for admissions at the 1988 Dubin Inquiry by two of the runners that they took illegal performance-enhancing drugs in 1988 and or/earlier. The accepted record became the 1:35.35 run by the National Team (Jill McDermid, Esmie Lawrence, Gwen Wall and Jillian Richardson) on July 16, 1988 at Gateshead, GBR. All four runners were members of the Calgary Spartans. The Spartan record lasted until 2002, when a national team ran 1:34.82 at the Penn Relays. Two years later, at the same meet, Foy Williams, Lindsay Lochhead, Erika Witter and Daniella Vega teamed up for Canada and ran what is still recognized as the record: 1:33.40. The 1968 Canadian record list included the women’s 3x800m record, an event which had been recognized for world record purposes from the 1930’s to May of 1969, when it was replaced by the 4x800m. The 1st and only Canadian record in the 3x800m (and 3x880y) was 6:48.6, set by the Central Ontario TFA team of Cathy Griffin, Roberta Picco and Abby Hoffman in Toronto on July 1 1966. On September 13, 1969 the Vancouver Olympic Club team of Noreen Liepens, Thelma Fynn, Maureen Crowley and Yvonne Moore ran 9:16.8 over the 4x880 yard (4x804.7m) distance to establish the new national metric and yard standards for 4 runner teams. The 4x800m record was significantly improved in 1973 when the Vancouver O.C. quartet of Lesley Stubbs, D.(Bev?) Martens, Caroline Vandepoll and Maureen Crowley ran 9:04.6 in their hometown. A year later a University of British Columbia team ran exactly the same time. In 1979 the Kajaks from B.C. were reported to have run 9:01.8. However, that performance was never ratified as a Canadian record, the next record to show up on the lists being Edmonton Olympic Club’s 9:03.3, done at Vancouver on May 10, 1980. The runners were Jocelyn Fraser, Hope Smith, Sue Bell and Birgit Otto.

The first national team to run the event and establish a composite team benchmark consisted of Marg Stride, Patty Loverock, Yoyce Yakubowich and Marg Bailey. While running at Bourges, France, June 18, 1977 they posted a time of 1:35.5. Four years later, the University of Toronto Track Club team of Angela Bailey, Marita Payne, Jill Ross and D. Wright slipped under the record by only 2 tenths of a second.

The next improvement occurred in 1988 when the Vikes club (Trish Wellman, Nancy McCarthy, Robyn Meagher, Debbie Bowker) ran a speedy 8:41.7. The current record is 8:28.5 set by the Pacific Athletics team of Melina Thibedeau, Katie Vermuelen, Heather Henniger and Diane Cummins) at Burnaby on May 10, 2003.

In 1981 another national team, this time consisting of

having been contested in Ontario as part of the provincial relay championships. The starting point for the women’s 4x15 in Canada was likely the 19:37.0 put up by Quebec’s Titan club (P.Puntous, S.Puntous, I.Boutet, M.C.Grenier) in 1978. This was really a best performance, as Athletics Canada didn’t include the event in their list of records until many years later. That was the same for a team representing Mississauga Track Club when it ran 18:59.8 in Kitchener on July 21, 1979.

The record, or rather best performance, was broken two more times, firstly by the Vikes A team in 1988. The team of Trish Wellman, Nancy McCarthy, Robyn Meagher and Debbie Bowker ran 18:24.8 at the same meet at which they broke the 4x800m record. The currently listed official record of 18:10.75 was set in Philadelphia on April 22, 2001 by 4 Canadians running for the University of West Virginia - Marissa Sexsmith, Rebecca Stallwood, Karin Lockhart and Megan Metcalfe. The Youth Medley relay, consisting of 100-200-300400m legs, was invented especially for the World Youth Championships. This format encourages participation from even the smallest teams participating at the Championships. Canada’s best showing was 3rd at the most recent competition in Lille in 2011. The time for the four girls, Shamelle Pless, Khamica.Bingham, Christian Brennan and Sage Watson, 2:05.72, was a new Canadian record. Two other medleys, the sprint medley relay (400-200-200800m) and distance medley relay (400-800-1200-1600m or 800-400-1200-1600m) have never been accepted as Canadian record events. (They were on the men’s lists for a period, but dropped later.) In Canada, most sprint medley relay performances have been achieved at the Royal Canadian Legion Championships and the Ontario Relay Championships. By far the best Canadian all-time performance for the sprint medley is 3:53.9, recorded by the Guelph Oaks club in 1978. This team was made up of Marg Stride, Jean Sparling, Laurie Thur and Rachelle Campbell. The distance medley is still contested at the Ontario championships. The best performance is the 12:08.24 posted by an Ottawa Lions team in Ottawa in 2007. That team, however, included a non-Canadian citizen. The best time by a team with four Canadians is 12:17.12, run by another Ottawa Lions team in Windsor in 2009. k Some references used in the writing of this article: - McNulty, W. and T.
