-rays are previews of when we turn into ghosts. I have had my share lately: of my left wrist after breaking it playing basketball, now of my right ankle after decades of distance running. The image is breathtaking: knobby talus bones, fit precisely to hinge and rotate, flaring down into metatarsals of the upper foot and phalanges. “If you can call something in me religious,” said Albert Einstein, “it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as science can reveal it.” The glowing negative shows a marvelous mechanism that — compared to my left foot, next to it — seems comically misaligned. Givens are two flat feet and a right-foot bunion. Add God knows how many miles of running, basketball, walking and restless pacing between every sentence. Write sitting down? Not me. I first noticed arthritis years ago. So what? Lots of runners have it. When my race times grew slower faster than other runners my age, I trained harder, ran more miles and tried lighter shoes ... every sidestep I could think of.

compensates. Degeneration is exponential. Then there’s the mental part. “I am not Type A,” I told myself, quitting racing and teasing friends who kept on that now I get paid to cover events as a journalist, saving entry fees, pain and striving. Something living had been cut out of me. Compensatory happiness came from putzing around the neighborhood with my dog. I’d jog hard enough to breathe deeply and feel my heart pound, then stop to let him drink out of streams and passingby children pet him. He’s dumb as a rock, but his joy in each moment makes him a Buddha. At last the pain hit a tipping point. Time to move inside to a Nordic machine, see a specialist. He confirmed what I’d long suspected and proposed means we might address it. Shy of radical foot reconstruction, and maybe not running again, we’ll try customized inserts in more-stable shoes, plus an ankle brace to forestall selfinflicted damage. Less pain would be a bonus — as would a skinnier dog and me. Now I wish I could write you a melody so plain That could hold you dear lady from going insane That could ease you and cool you and cease the pain Of your useless and pointless knowledge. - Ibid There’s no use thinking I’d trade the dumb things I’ve done. For what? Something dumber? I had a blast doing them — and I still am. What’s left of my ghost body can be salvaged. I can type letters other than “A” — an alphabet waits of discovery, and, when that’s finished, numbers, colors …

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. My right heel landed farther outside where The dog wags his tail as if thinking each moment my weight came down, shifting lower-leg shock from promises miracles and the best way to bless our memmy tibia to the slender, more-fragile fibula. St. Patrick’s Parade Corktown Race, Detroit

Marathon Aspirants Claim Year-Starting Corktown Crowns By Charles Douglas McEwen

“The crowds were amazing,” said Pidhoresky, 26, of Tecumseh, Ontario. “I’ve never seen anything like this before.” Pidhoresky, the 2010 and 2011 Detroit Free Press/Talmer Bank Half Marathon women’s champ, hoped to get in a speed workout at Corktown before tackling longer distances this season. “It was good,” she said of the 5K. “It was windy out there, but I ran about what I thought I would based on my training, which isn’t really geared toward that distance.” Pidhoresky finished in 16:35, well ahead of Andrea Karl, 28, of East China (17:57) and Susan Savasky, 24, of Berkley (19:11). Janet Harden, 40, of Lake Orion won the masters title in 20:55, while Ella Willis, 58, of Detroit led the grand masters in 22:07. “It was hard to run that fast,” said Pidhoresky, whose 5K PR is 16:12. “My next race is a 30K (Around the Bay in Hamilton, Ontario) and this is a mental tune-up. I’ve never done a marathon, but I hope to do one this fall.”

The event, presented by the Fraternal Order of United Irishman and sponsored by Ambassador Bridge, looked like a river of green to viewers. A record field of close to 10,000 participants, most wearing bright Corktown shirts or green costumes, streamed up and down Michigan Avenue.

DETROIT (3/10/13) — Repeat champ Mike Anderson and first-year entrant Dayna Pidhoresky cruised to titles at the 31st annual St. Patrick’s Parade Corktown 5K.

Mike Andersen repeated as champion in 15:13.

First-year entrant Dayna Pidhoresky finished in 16:35 for the 5K title.

Andersen, 26, of Milford also used the race as a tune-up. “I’m training for the Boston Marathon, so this was just for fun,” he said.

“It was windy, with people to chase and all over the place,” Trojansek said.

Andersen’s 15:13 was 10 seconds slower than his winning time last year. “The wind on the way back was brutal,” he said. Next came Jeff Gardner, 52, of Troy in 15:25 and John Trojansek, 42, of Windsor, Ontario, in 15:28.

With Gardner and Trojansek taking second and third overall, Paul Aufdemberge, 48, of Redford was awarded top masters honors in 16:37. Tom Yates, 51, of New Boston captured the grand masters title in 17:38. Race director Doug Kurtis said everything went smoothly, despite the turnout. “We’ve added locations for pre-race packet pickups,” he said. “Eighty-five percent of our people picked up their stuff (bib numbers and t-shirts) ahead of time, which made things a lot easier on race day.”

The Corktown Parade, which took place after the race, celebrated its 55th year and honored the life of West Bloomfield police officer Patrick O’Rourke, who was killed last year. Running Shorts with Scott Hubbard Trivia: Who were the women’s and men’s 2012 London Olympics marathon gold medal winners?

M

Scott Hubbard

y path to the race announcing I’ve done for the past 30-plus years was preceded by experiences as a high school, college and open runner, high school and college coach and director for a large race.

I started running in the late 1960s before it became “cool” in the mid -’70s and tracked its explosion in popularity at local events and through publications into the early ‘80s. As with many, I got caught up in developments that piggybacked on the growing numbers, such as (much) better equipment, dissemination of training advice and specialty running stores. Also by the early ’80s, the modest number of races a decade earlier had grown as new runners saw races less as an event “for the fast” and more as a personal challenge.

The best thing to happen to running was when opportunities to compete became open to high school girls in the mid-’70s. It’s mind-bending now to consider the reasons why girls were long treated as second-class citizens! I watched, participated in and abetted many of the cool things happening in the day. Looking back, I can see how each thing I did was influenced by a prior encounter or experience. One thing led to another and I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

For the first 18 years, my announcing was all at road races. Over the past dozen years I’ve added high school and college cross-country and track meets. I’d like to share some of my top memories. First gig: the day before the ’82 Crim 10-mile, I was asked if I might like to help Bobby Crim spot runners for announcing purposes at the finish, since I wasn’t running. I agreed and on race day climbed a ladder to sit on a mid-block store awning to join Bobby near the finish line. He chattered as runners finished and I supplied him with names. After 10 minutes of this set-up, Bobby handed me the mic and said, “You know all the runners, you announce.” I was invited back and this August will be my 32nd year commenting on the thousands finishing on the Saginaw Street bricks.

sixth vertical template_sixth vertical 4/11/13 12:49 PM Page 1

My favorite is emceeing the Lower Peninsula high school cross country finals at Michigan International Speedway every fall. My son Jeff and his Ann Arbor Pioneer team qualified in 2001 and he ran about as well as a first-year sophomore could be expected. By his senior year Jeff was in terrific shape, as was the Pioneer team. Spectating at MIS is difficult, so I chose to watch him during the first two miles of the 5K race and track his progress around the north end of the finishing infield grass at a distance. He was in 18th place (top 30 make all-state) when he went past me at two-plus miles. I watched as he picked off runners one by one around the long bend and slowly walked back toward the announcing area. About 20 minutes later I saw the results and he had moved up to 11th place. Later Jeff told me he wanted the top 10, but got out-kicked. The awards ceremonies for the four-race afternoon session took place two hours later. I introduce the top-30 runners in reverse order and my heart was pounding as I neared 11th place, not sure what to say. I mentioned the next boy was my son — and after Jeff walked up the stairs and got his medal, I gave him a hug. I learned later that spectators voiced approval. That’s as cool as it gets for me.

Seven Lakes State Park, when ...

Next I remember, I was looking up at the sky, wondering why I was on the ground. An ambulance crew explained I’d been hit by the side-view mirror of a mini van. Since I was on a blood thinner for a blood clot, I was taken to Genesys Hospital in Grand Blanc. Only the back of my left arm, where I was hit, was sore. The trauma area staff quickly learned what I knew: I was OK. I was given a CAT scan to check for head damage and kept overnight for observation. The scan only revealed only how badly my collar bone, hurt in a May 2011 bike race crash, had been broken. The Genesys staff was terrific; the food was bad. I picked up my helmet and bike March 7 from a local fire station. One of the responders who’d helped me was there. An eyewitness had told her I’d landed near the middle of the road on my back, sat up and scooted off to the roadside. “I don’t recall any of that,” I told her. “How did you know my name and where I lived?” “You answered our questions at the time,” she said. “I don’t remember that either.” “It looks like you’re getting a part of your life back,” she said. Banging my helmet against the pavement had erased my memory for eight to 10 minutes. Yes, the driver who’d hit me stopped. When quizzed by police on the scene, he lied about how it all happened, saying I was in the roadway. I’ve been up and down that busy road hundreds of times and have no “death wish” to mingle with traffic going 50 mph. I like bike lanes and that’s where I was when hit. I was wearing a loud yellow jacket, doing all I could to be safe. I share this to once again emphasize if you ride a bike, please wear a helmet — if not for yourself, for others who care about you. Plus ride far right and follow all traffic laws. Bikes have as much right to the road as cars, which too many drivers seem to ignore and/or be oblivious to. Insurance is taking care of my costs (cracked helmet, medical, etc.) and I’m still wondering how I dodged worse damage. The back of my left arm has a lovely purple/black bruise. The left side of my head where my helmet met pavement was tender for five days. Otherwise, I’m physically OK and back in the saddle, a bit self-concious of traffic behind me. Great to (still) be here!

Late-Breaking News.

The latest in “Bad Things that Happen to Scott” occurred March 5 while I was cycling in a bike lane next to Grange Hall Road between Fenton and Holly. I was on a straight stretch, thinking about heading into nearby

Winter Blast, Grandville

Hot Times at Winter Blast Series Opener By Scott Sullivan GRANDVILLE (2/16/13) — Former Michigan Runners of the Year Nick Stanko and Kris Koster didn’t fear getting lost at the fore of the Winter Blast 5K field.

Calvin’s girls, second in the state just four points behind Jackson Lumen Christi, fared even better, with senior Ashley Jourdan (20:00.0) nipping sophomore Emma Doorn (20:07.0) for the women’s title.

The course — on flat, residential streets behind race sponsor Calvin Christian High School — was so assaulted with salt beforehand that falling snow had no chance of sticking. Plows had also scraped side roads, but not made them sodium-bare and black. Stanko, MR’s 2005 and 2010 Runner of the Year, and Koster, 2011 Men’s Co-Runner of the Year, spread heat from the start in this first event of Michigan Runner magazine’s 2013 Race Series. The two former college stars — Stanko at the University of Michigan, Koster at Calvin College — sizzled through the snow to a photo finish. Asked while doing a cool-down together afterward who had won, neither knew. “We ran through a door inside to a dark gymnasium, then, boom, we were done,” said Stanko. “Nick closed stronger. I think he got me,” Koster said.

“I’m pleased with the way our team members ran,” said race director and CC coach Laurens TenKate. “I can see who’s been training in the off-season. We’ll have most of our top girls back next fall, while some of our younger guys will have new opportunities.” Photo by Scott Sullivan

Old-timers had their day in the sun ... OK, snow, as well. Brian Fahey, 44, nipped JD Pepper, 49, for the men’s masters crown, 18:00.4 to 18:01.1. Steve Hulst, 56, (19:12.7) topped Dan Kersjes, 51, (20:19.7) for grand masters honors.

The clock showed Koster, winner in each of the Winter Blast’s first three runnings, was accurate. Stanko, 32, crossed in 15:40.0; Koster, 31, in 15:40.7. Calvin Christian, whose boys cross country team finished third in the Division 3 state meet last fall, was well represented behind the leaders. Allstate seniors Zac Nowicki (15:59.7) and Andrew Rylaarsdam (16:25.1) placed third and fourth. Next came junior Logan Jurgens (16:50.7).

Nick Stanko (bib no. 3) edged Kris Koster (bib no. 2) for the 5K win. Gayle Kuipers, 47, (21:01.3) bested Darla Brown, 49, (24:24.4) among masters women. Wanda Hanlin, 56, (22:30.9) paced the grand masters, followed by Nancy Curry, 51, (24:42.7). Valentine’s roses were handed to each woman finisher. Harold Plasier and Rob Smith faced a thornier dilemma as the only two in the oldest race group. “Rod and I have strategy,” said Plaisier, 79.

“We outlive our competitors,” Smith, 76, chipped in.

Ashley Jourdan (20:00.0) nipped Emma Doorn (20:07.0) for the win.

ShamRock ‘n’ Roll Run, Plymouth

Wintry St. Patty’s Day Doesn’t Deter ShamRockers By Anthony Targan

In the 10K, veteran Clint Verran of Lake Orion (31:51) held off a challenge from Jeff Bord, 19, of Plymouth (31:56) in his debut 10K. Verran said Bord was “5:00 flat at the mile and by two miles he had about 30 seconds on this pack. I was in with about five or six other guys. It didn’t

look like we were going to catch him, so I took off on my own and ran a 4:56 third mile. “I finally caught him with about 2-1/2 miles to go,” Verran continued. “Then I used him and some of the wind to give me a kick with 500 meters to go.” Since this was his first 10K, “I wasn’t sure how I was going to go out,” Bord said. “Clint really helped me keep the pace in the second half.” Jenni Culbertson of Northville (41:22) was the women’s 10K winner, but admitted, “I didn’t know I was in first. I thought I was in second the entire time. I kept trying to find the next girl, but never found her. “ In a hotly-contested 5K, Josh Partridge of Brighton edged Matt Fecht of Warren. Both finished with times of 16:32 and six seconds separated the first four runners. The finish was “interesting, to say the least,” said Partridge. “Matt and I and a couple other guys had run the entire race together until the last half-mile. “As we were approaching the finish, it was very congested with 10K finishers,” he continued. “A race volunteer was in the middle of the road trying to direct 10K and 5K finishers to alternate sides.

© Carter Sherline / Frog Prince Studios

“Matt and I were right next to each other as we turned the corner to the finish, about 50 meters away, and I ran right into the volunteer while Matt went on to finish. Fortunately I had started a couple seconds back at the start of the race, and while Matt finished ahead of me, I had a faster chip time.”

Taylor Woloszyk, Jessica Wolf, and Darcy Martyn ran the 5K and were among the costume winners with these cheerful outfits. 14

PLYMOUTH (3/17/13) — Despite a windswept day with temperatures in the 20s and fresh snow on the ground, St. Patrick’s Day brought runners out in droves to the ShamRock ‘n’ Roll Run. Race director Alan Whitehead of Kona Running Co. reported a record 4,200 runners (up from 3,100 last year) for all three races. The festive holiday saw many tutu-attired runners — and even a few dogs — serenaded by an Irish band at the finish line.

Blake and Annie Kolb make the 5K a family affair.

Fecht also took third in the 10K. Also pulling double duty was Jay Steele of Plymouth, who was the male masters winner in both the 5K (17:54) and 10K (35:54). Due to the crowded course, women’s 5K and masters winner Kathleen McGowan of Fenton (22:00) had no idea she had barely beaten Erin Desmond of Huntington Woods (22:02), but took it in stride. “It’s kind of neat running with the 10K people,” McGowan said. “I didn’t know I was leading so, it’s kind of nice not knowing.” Shamik Ganguly of Plymouth won the 1-mile in 5:59 with little competition. Jessica Hughes of Canton, 12, was the first female and third overall in 7:36.

Houseman Field: Then and Now

rity days before now made me uneasy as I felt stares from the other kids around me. I hugged my thin body, feeling as if my stomach was the center of attention thanks to this purple-, blue- and whitestriped bikini top. But the moment I toed the line and saw the stretch of a red, rubber track before me, my arms fell to my sides, tense and poised. When I dashed from the start the arms that protected my stomach could dance in the wind, break out in rhythm to my running song. I could pull my body out of the turtle shell, allow myself to breathe and flow with the soft, gentle curve of the Houseman track.

FOOT RACE

I could run. My mom’s words flowed through my mind as I focused on the competitors ahead: “Hold back at first. Pace yourself. Be patient until you are ready to sprint into the finish.” I started slowly, as she had told me, staying well behind my competitors, all of whom raced to the front to win in the first 100 meters. I knew an entire lap of a 400-meter track was a lot to cover. About 30 seconds after the race began I slowly moved up among a pack of kids who swung their arms wildly, their legs straining with fatigue. Without changing speed I passed the young boys a foot shorter than me and the tall girls a year or two older. That silly girl with the sports bra passed them with ease and mounting excitement.

I rounded the final curve on that warm summer evening and could almost hear my mom urge, “Now you can go!” as I dashed toward the finish with 100 meters left. My arms swung back, hooking the air in large sweeps. My long, spindly legs widened with every stride and my face held onto its calmness. My thoughts focused on the finish ahead where my mom stood, holding a stopwatch in her right hand, screaming “Go Rachael!” The big, clunky shoes I wore were heavy, but my body was light, my loose hair free in the wind I created for myself. I would become the greatest runner in the world. I knew it in my heart and my soul. That seven-year-old who rounded the Houseman Field track in the early ‘90s would find herself there again more than a decade later. That little girl would race again as a college athlete who never lost her love for a sport; a sport that could let her unravel the arms that held onto her self-conscious body, that could let her hair ripple in the wind, that could release a smile no matter what place she came in.

Races That No Longer Exist – For Good Reason By Dean Johnson

I

t’s fun to reminisce about races you ran that no longer exist. Some ceased for good reasons, like the race director moved away or the course is no longer available or a sponsor went out of business. Then there are those that ceased to exist because of fatal flaws in concept or commission. In my hometown of Lapeer, near Flint, 1986 saw the inaugural “Run Through the Lapeer State Home.” But when they lost a runner that first year and three more the next, it doomed the race. They did eventually find them — seems no one had informed the security guards of the race, and they thought residents were “escaping” and ushered them back to their dorms. The food was so good and the staff was so encouraging, the lost runners never objected until the FBI got involved. But it’s hard to conduct a race with federal oversight, and that one fittingly died out.

seemed to be men wearing bright orange full-body outfits — unusual gear for a mid-July race, which, not surprisingly, was only run that one year. Some races will bill themselves as a “tune ups” for some other big upcoming race. In Grand Rapids there’s a fairly popular 25K the end of each May, so someone created a tune-up the week before. Tune-up races are always shorter than the big race, so this one was only 24K (14.9 miles, a fairly uncommon race distance). They wanted it to start and finish at the same downtown plaza as the big race, so the course was just 32 laps around the same concrete city block, which required 128 right turns by runners. This race needed to die and it did.

A similar attempt was made with the Crim in Flint, though on the exact same Saturday in late August. Whereas the Crim takes you through some of the nicest neighborhoods in Flint, “The Grim,” as it A similar, though opposite, problem occurred in Bad Axe when someone hatched the creative idea was called, took you through 10 miles of the worst, most-dilapidated neighborhoods. (The name to run a 5K through the Thumb Regional Correcseemed to have been devised to deliberately deceive tional Facility. How they got a permit for this I don’t people, and quite a few did mistakenly sign up for know, but just after the mile mark runners passed through the barbed-wire gates. Prisoners whooped the race, not discovering their mistake until they showed up on race day morning at the abandoned and high-fived the runners, but race directors found warehouse where the race began. The course did they had 12 more finishers than entrants, and all half page horizontal template_half page horizontal 4/16/13 11:22 AM Page 1

offer an education, running down alleys and through not one but two abandoned houses. The event was cancelled after only three years, but directors never told anyone, so I and quite a few others showed up and ran a fourth year, not noticing any difference. It never was a very well-organized race. You’ve probably heard of the race in Cadillac that died not for lack of quality but simply an unfortunate race name. The fundraiser for the Cadillac Race for Alzheimer’s Project was called the “Run for C.R.A.P.” I know, right? As I exited my car on race morning I heard a large woman exclaim, “I’ve done all the C.R.A.P. runs!” It was a pretty enough course, except the part that ran by the city sewage plant. And they never seemed to have enough porta-johns at the start/finish. The year after they served spoiled fruit at the post-race spread and 122 runners were stricken with botulism, the race met its unfortunate end. So most great races continue, some good races regretfully end, and then there are those few races that die just because they needed to. - MR -

Rules to Run by (Heh, Heh) By Bob Schwartz

I

’ve about had it up to my Cool Max hat. Everywhere I turn there’s another training program designed to help one easily complete a marathon. Standing. In one piece. Coherent.

it takes. Don’t worry about “dead legs” come race day, as adrenaline and fan support will overcome that completely.

Coffee Combustion - Give yourself a great big Speedy Start - The key to a successful start is to

It’s not fair to us veteran marathoners whose running history began with not only hitting the legendary wall but also becoming encased in it and staggering to the finish with demented half-grins. When we began running marathons, the concepts of lactate threshold training, VO2 max, heart rate monitors etc. weren’t around. We were the naïve souls of the preenergy gel era. The running relics. We proudly wore the battle scars earned from running the last 10 miles of the marathon with mind-altering glycogen depletion producing a lovely hallucinogenic state. That was a true runner’s high!

place yourself as near to the front as possible. You want to get caught up in the faster pace of the elite runners and make certain you eclipse your planned pace per mile by a minute or so in those first few miles. This way you’ll already be well ahead of your goal target and the mental boost you’ll receive is im-

You’ve worked hard preparing for the marathon and should reward yourself with something new and special for the race. The best thing would be a brand new pair of shoes, or try a different make of socks or even a new breakfast cereal. Maybe Fiber Flakes or Bran Buds. Mix things up a little for the big day.

Uphill, Downhill – Attack hills vigorously. Get into oxygen debt. Try to lengthen that stride and sprint up them as fast as possible, then jog leisurely on the downhill while putting on the break pedals. This way you’ll get the hill out of the way faster and be able to enjoy the slow pace on the backside while exchanging high fives with the spectators.

I’m tired of watching people cross the finish line with a big smile - having done everything correctly from training to pacing to fueling. They don’t appropriately display my initial marathon look of having had a tryst with a fast-moving steamroller while pulling an enormous tank stuck in deep quicksand. No, they look tired but not exhausted, thirsty but not dehydrated, slightly sore but not slithering on spaghetti legs.

GU Riddance - Do you think Frank Shorter won a gold medal downing energy gels over the last 10 miles? The only goo Frank was familiar with in the 1970s was Shoe Goo, which you wouldn’t want to ingest. Don’t rely on a shot of strawberry banana flavored pudding-like food to get you through the sudden lightheaded feeling at mile 20. Just close your eyes and plow ahead. Be a trooper.

It’s just not fair! Where’s the delirium? The unfathomable fatigue? This isn’t right.

Nietzsche wrote, “That which does not kill us makes us stronger.” We’ll help them get stronger than ever if they’ll follow our veteran words of advice: Taper Schmaper - Taper? You’ve got to be kidding. You want to lose that finely-tuned conditioning you worked so hard for? That rapid leg turnover? You’re a virtual running machine. Cut back? No way. Keep that consistent training going right up until a day before the race and to gain that psychological edge that you can go the distance. It’s a great idea to do your last long run a few days before the marathon. This just reinforces that you’ve got what 20

kick-start. If you’re a regular coffee drinker. quintuple your normal intake. If you’re new to the caffeine connection, then three cups will do you fine. Don’t worry about upsetting your stomach, or its diuretic effects as that’s a small trade off for a good opening mile time.

Try Something Exciting –

We over-trained, inadequately tapered and didn’t drink or eat properly. Through sheer ignorance we carefully and confidently violated every present-day cardinal rule of proper race preparation and marathon running. We went bonk big time but just assumed that was part of the process. Delirious was our middle name.

We more-seasoned runners need to stick together. We must generously give new marathoners the opportunity to experience the lovely agony we encountered. The complete enervation, the nausea, the cramps, the cratersize blisters. We came, we ran, we withered!

extra incentive to get going, as unquenched thirst is a great motivator.

measurable. Don’t even think about negative splits. Just get as far ahead of your target time as quick as you can and the stimulus of the race will keep you going the rest of they way. Take advantage of all that pent-up energy in the first half of the race. Go! Go! Go!

Bathroom Discipline – Let’s talk anatomy. You drink fluids; you eventually have to expel. Do you want to have to waste time stopping for a porta-potty at mile 18? I think not. The best way to avoid this is to forego all fluid offered at the various aid stations. Additionally, you won’t lose those valuable seconds by slowing down to grab a drink. Recognize that if you’re really thirsty they’ll be plenty of fluids available at the finish line. That also works as

Post-Run Recovery - Once you cross that finish line you deserve to lay down. Don’t expend any further energy and stop the strain train right there. Just take a seat and let those lactic acid pools build right up in your legs where they belong. You may be more sore tomorrow but let’s just think about today. If new marathoners would only adhere to the above Rules to Run By, they’d bring a depraved little smile to the face of some old-time marathoners. Heh, heh, heh! Book Review

Hansons Marathon Method By Ron Marinucci

T

his spring, with many runners, veterans and novices alike set to begin marathon training for a fall race, Luke Humphrey’s “Hansons Marathon Method” is worth a long look. Humphrey is the founder and head coach of the Hansons Coaching Service. He holds degrees in exercise science and has a marathon PR of 2:14:39 —

their first marathons as well as mid-packers seeking to improve their times. Central to any marathon plan is the long run. The Hansons Method’s longest training distance for most runners is 16 miles, unconventional in marathon circles. But that doesn’t mean this is a shortcut to marathon success — hardly. As Humphrey notes, this isn’t “training to run, walk or drag yourself across the finish line. (It’s more than) just looking to finish.” Rather, it will prepare runners “to execute the marathon distance successfully.” The Hansons Method is “balanced training,” relying on a fairly-standard regimen of long runs, tempo runs and runs designed for strength and speed. These are called “SOS —Something of Substance” workouts. Mixed in are easy runs, also key components of the program. Each workout has a specific purpose. Crucial is running these workouts at the proper designated pace and volume; running at unintended paces and/or greater distances fouls up the plan.

training with the Hansons Marathon Method. The Hansons, brothers Keith and Kevin, began the successful Hansons-Brooks Distance Project which has produced other elite marathoners such as Desiree Davila, Brian Sell and Clint Verran. Don’t be frightened by the reference to elites. This “renegade path” also can be and has been used by runners tackling 22

Michigan Runner - May / June 2013

That’s because the method relies on what Humphrey calls “cumulative fatigue,” the differentiating factor in the Hansons Method. For instance, the typical long run is not greater than 16 miles, while most other marathon programs call for 20 or more miles. The shorter distance, though, comes with “a hitch. (It) should simulate the last 16 miles of the marathon, not the first 16.” Humphrey goes on to add, “A training plan should simulate the cumulative fatigue that’s experienced during a marathon, without completely zapping your legs.” That’s why runners must adhere to proper pace and distance for each workout, especially the easy runs. The book is well written, lively and easy to follow. Humphrey’s explanations of the science behind |

“Hansons Marathon Method: A Renegade Path to Your Fastest Marathon” by Luke Humphrey with Keith and Kevin Hanson. 2012. 242 pp. $18.95 paper. Velopress.

Luke Humphrey competes in the 2012 U.S. Olympic Team Trials - Men’s Marathon in Houston. the training is interesting — clear and concise, some of the best I have read on the subject. There are good lessons on physiology, for instance, the benefits of the easy runs. He also covers the non-running aspects of successful training for and running the marathon. Included are nutrition and what foods are important. “Carbo loading doesn’t mean having four plates of spaghetti and three loaves of bread.” He discusses hydration and equipment, adding information and thoughts on the latest trends such as hyponatremia, compression-based socks and minimalist shoes. The charts, graphs and checklists are easy to read. There are examples of “Elite Program Workouts” and, recognizing that not every runner can follow the conventional schedule, a nine-day training cycle. The Hansons Marathon Method has led to success for many runners of a wide variety of abilities and goals. In fact, I haven’t run a marathon in about a dozen years. Yet, after reading this book, I found myself telling a running buddy, “You know, maybe it’s time ...” - MR -

Helping Kids Go the Distance By Dave Foley

K

ids sprint. They don’t run. They dash across the street, chase after someone, flee frantically from a pursuer or bolt across the yard to kick a ball.

Dave Foley

That’s how it was with me. As a kid I ran all the time and when I got out of breath, I stopped. But since most of my destinations were within 100 yards of where I started, that was no problem.

At Alger Elementary School, I was the secondfastest in the sixth grade. But in sixth grade the winner is the hero and second is just one of the rest. So Richard Vail’s win got the girls’ attention and I was just another kid. Three years later I joined the Burton Junior High Track Team, where the longest race was the 110-yard leg of the 440 relay. I ran my fastest in the time trials and the next day I was the team manager. In 1994 I became the coach of the Cadillac Middle School Track Team. When we had track signup, students flocked to my room. With visions of blazing to victory down an eight-lane track, 120 or so hopefuls showed up for the first day of practice. We had them sprint, high jump, long jump, pole vault and put the shot. To them, track practice seemed like recess for big kids. Only the coaches and a few kids, most of whom had older siblings on the high school cross-country team, seemed excited about those events that involved running more than one lap around the track. About 95 percent of the kids saw themselves as natural-born speedsters. We learned that the first year. The next year at the first track practice, I gave the participants a somewhat-impassioned speech, laced with a little hyperbole and lots of enthusiasm, about the joys of distance running. Yes, I explained, you would be in pain in practice and might feel worse in meets, but in distance running determination and hard work trumped talent. The natural athlete wouldn’t automatically be the star. A group of athletic unknowns, 40 percent of the track team, suddenly decided to become distance runners.

Gamely they pushed on, an especially-daunting task since this may have been the first time they’d gone this far. They hadn’t a clue how they’d feel five minutes from now or at the finish. Would those aching legs feel even worse? The dull ache in the head, the gasping for air and that awful wet goo taste in the mouth — they felt horrible. I watched some give in and slow down; others looked over their shoulders at those coming up to them and continued to run, arms now flailing a bit and their torsos going go side to side. As the first finished and grabbed his side, I gave him a cheer and then turned back to find the others. Some were walking, the rest running at whatever level of fatigue they chose to tolerate. After it was over we stretched and talked. They were amazed how well they felt. Sure their legs were tired, but they felt happy and proud. The next night a few drifted over with the sprinters, but most were back for another run. As the season continued their bodies adapted. Soon the side stitches disappeared, as did that ache that throbbed over the collarbone. The cottonmouth was gone and the heavy breathing only returned when they were running hard. The leg muscles still burned, but now they went farther and faster before the real pain came. Camaraderie developed. A tough workout was hard on everyone — maybe more so on the last to finish, since they spent the most time running. There were no prima donnas here. The first ones often stayed to cheer the last ones in. Self-esteem rose. When the distance team shared the track with the sprinters, guess which group quit after six 200s while the other did four 400s and two 800s? Even though only a few may have collected blue ribbons by season’s end, most had run distances and race times that far surpassed anything in their past. When we worry about the younger generation, accusing them of having no goals and avoiding challenges, I think about the kids who ran distance. While life may be easier today, the pain and hard work needed to be a runner hasn’t changed. As long as we can find people to coach, parents to encourage, and provide opportunities for youth to run, I think the future looks good.

The first day we all run an out-and-back twomiler. This was a reality check. I counted down, yelled, “Let’s go!” and we broke from the starting line. Some raced out ahead while others trotted tentatively, not knowing if they could go the whole way without walking. I saw some of the leaders struggling, wanting to slow to a jog yet determined to stay in front.

Writer Dave Foley may be retired as a Cadillac High School teacher and coach, and as 14-year editor of Michigan Runner magazine, but remains active in all things engaging.

Twinkie Run, Ann Arbor

Weather No Joke at April Fools’ Twinkie Run By Charles Douglas McEwen ANN ARBOR (4/1/13) — Runners ate a Twinkie at the start of the April Fools’ Day Twinkie Run, stopped to eat another midway through the 5K, then tried to sprint the final 1.5 miles to the finish line.

“It was a lot of fun,” said men’s winner Austin Horn, 17. “I didn’t cramp up as much as I thought I would from eating the two Twinkies.” The Chelsea High School senior did have trouble swallowing the snack cakes. “They’re so dry, it’s hard to get them down,” he said. Horn timed 17:35. Next came Kevin Salter, 17, of Macomb (18:21), Alex Williams, 28, of Caro (19:35) and Benjamin Koch, 17, of Chelsea (19:38).

Temby was the first woman finisher in 22:35 but didn’t eat any Twinkies, “because I cannot eat any dairy,” she said. As a result, Twinkie-eaters Cassie Hoffman, 18, of Rochester (22:52), Kelley Kozloff, 36, of Ann Arbor (23:21), Deb Godmer, 49, of Pinckney (24:29) and Cassie Williams, 27, of Caro (24:33) all moved ahead of Temby in the final standings. “Those Twinkies kind of slow you down and mess you up,” said Koch, Horn’s Chelsea High teammate. “It was hard running and eating at the same time.”

Hoffman, a Stony Creek High School senior, struggled eating them. “I was still chewing the first one when the race started,” she recalled. “The second one was even harder to put down.” Williams also found the wind a factor. “It was whipping around pretty good,” she said.

Tyacie Corle munches her second Twinkie on her way to a 26:13 finish.

ANN ARBOR (3/10/13) — More than 2,000 runners and walkers enjoyed the Shamrocks and Shenanigans 5K on its out-and-back course with a view of the giant block M on Michigan Stadium. The St. Patty’s-themed race took place under partlysunny skies with temperatures in the 40s. “The course has some hills,” said Ian Forsyth, who led the field by bike, “but it’s not super arduous; you can get going pretty good.” Winners Justin Heck (15:48) and Annie-Norah Beveridge (19:40) broke last year’s men’s and women’s course records set by Neil Atzinger (15:54) and Lauren Dennisuk (19:58). “This is a great community event whether you’re a hard-core or fun runner,” said race director Steve Angerman. “We get lots of kids and families too.”

Ana Hotaling “liked doing the race with my kids,” Jaeson, 9, and Bryce, 6, both of whom ran the Kids’ Kilometer and thought the race fun. Bryce especially liked the vanilla ice cream.

the markup is impressive, but, still, what’s a lousy 67 cents when it comes to slaying 24 deer flies on an eight-mile run?

Where would I have been this past winter without Yaktrax? Or last summer without deer-fly strips?

hank goodness for the long winter. No, I’m not crazy. I just remember the eight days of 80-degree weather up north last winter, which got all the fruit trees budding just ahead of a series of killer frosts in April that destroyed most of the cherries, apples, peaches and pears.

hank God for low-tech.

Forget high tech. Forget all the wonderful synthetic wicking materials. Forget all those massively-engineered midsoles. Forget GPS watches that break out your inch-per-nanosecond pace and miles covered to the 38th decimal place. Yes, Yaktrax seem horrible overpriced, a cross-hatching of small steel spirals that attach to your running shoes that looks to be about 12 cents worth of material that can retail for anywhere between $20 and $30. But what a godsend. One day this past March I did an eight-mile loop on the Potawatomie Trail in the Pinckney State Recreation area northwest of Ann Arbor. I’d been in Ann Arbor on business and got done early. There wasn’t any snow in town, but there was plenty left when I pulled into the parking lot at the park. And the snow on those steep up-and-down trails had been compacted by runners and skiers into a thick, slick sheet of ice. Without Yaktrax, I would have been too stubborn to just turn around and drive somewhere else. I would have gone for a run, fallen like 18 times on my aging infrastructure and probably been permanently disabled. With Yaktrax not a single slip, no falls, just eight miles of gut-busting work that was more than enough to rationalize a bag of Better Made potato chips and a Pepsi on the ride home. I ran the same loop last June when the deerflies were at their peak. To the rescue? A Tred-Not deer-fly patch. Talk about low-tech. The strips are two inches by six inches, white on one side, brown on the other, with each side extremely sticky. They are killing machines when it comes to deer flies, in as simple and nontoxic a fashion as possible. You need to wear a cap, then put the strip across the crown of the cap, white side down, then go for a run. Instead of being driven insane by deerflies, you just motor along, barely aware of them. When I finished the run last June, there were 24 deer flies stuck to the tape. Not one of them had bit me. The way the strip works is from its inventor having noticed deer-fly behavior. They like to bump people on the back of the head, checking out their smell or who knows what, before taking a chomp out of their favorite spots, the backs of your arms or thighs. But they bop your head once, they’re stuck. The strips cost $8 for a 12-pack and are only good to use once if the flies are out in force. I’m sure

And the lack of snow all winter and the hot dry March made the soil so dry that there was barely a morel mushroom harvest in May. So, hooray for no fruit buds this March. Hooray for lots of snow and, presumably, lots of morels. There was plenty of new snow this year for the fifth annual Camp Pet-o-se-ga Snowshoe Race, two fairly-flat loops around a 300-acre forested park on the shores of Pickerel Lake. This is a cool event, no pun intended. They only get 50 entrants or so, but we are treated afterwards to hot dogs, chili and a generous raffle that ends up giving something to nearly everyone. If you haven’t ever done a snowshoe race, this is the one to start out on. It’s the easiest course I’ve run on, with the cheapest entry fee and the best post-race refreshments.

amp Pet-o-se-ga will serve as a segue to my last item.

I finished next-to-last in the 5K. My wife, Kathleen, finished last. She’s a former Boston Marathon qualifier, a 20-minute 5K runner at her peak who was a frequent age-group winner for many years. I’m a former 2:58 marathoner. Both of us are happy to just be plugging along now, straining our hearts and lungs, still having an excuse to set the alarm on Saturday mornings. Kathleen has a much better excuse for running slowly than I do — she’s about to have double kneereplacement surgery and never runs pain-free, but gets enough enjoyment to make the pain worth it. A letter writer from Traverse City who misunderstood a recent column was pretty worked up in a letter she wrote to MR last issue. She thought a column about the lack of fast runners these days was somehow a criticism of slow runners. “Mr. Henderson is likely too busy looking at age categories, times, distances, number of racers and other statistics to ever have fun … Get a life besides hill fartleks, track work, training and writing boring and/or insulting articles. Relax, you only have so many heartbeats,” the writer said. To set the record straight, I haven’t done a hill fartlek

or track workout in five years. I did run two fartleks last fall, with six one-minute pickups in each run. My long run this year is eight miles. As of the end of March, I had run 160 miles all year. I love all the slow people at races. I’m one of them. If more slow people had shown up at Camp Pet-o-se-ga, I might not have finished next-to-last. My last run, a leprechaun 5K in Jordan March 24, I did in 28:29. In 1981, the first story I ever sold about running, to the Detroit Free Press about newbies training for their first marathon, drew an angry letter from a serious runner saying I was doing a disservice to the sport by encouraging people who ran slower than 8 minutes a mile. I thought he was a pompous ass and made sure to continue to encourage slow people thereafter. In the late 1990s and into the 2000s, I was the coach for the marathon fundraising team for the Detroit area chapter of the American Diabetes Association. We encouraged slow, slower and slowest people to join us. On the long runs we did each Sunday, I always ran with the slowest runner, which meant 20mile runs that took up most of the day. It’s not all the slow people I was concerned about in my column. It’s the near absence of anyone fast these days. I love running slow. I loved, also, having trained to the point where I could do halfmarathons at 6-minute pace, or 5Ks at 5:30. And having lots of other fast people to compete with. I was in the Anchor Bar in Detroit in 1983 when the Detroit Turkey Trot was created. I ran the first one and many thereafter. It was always called a Trot. It had fast people. Lisa Larsen Weidenbach won the first one for the women and later won the Boston marathon. So, yes, Trot or not, some people ran fast. I wish more people ran fast today. Bless those who don’t. 4/15/13 - MR - PM Page 1 alden run 2013_twelfth 1:31
