To those gone too soon

I am a city I have never been good with words, especially in public. Words just don’t come easy to me. But I have my eyes and my imagination. Wherever you go you bring something with you, whether it’s physical or more abstract. Me, I always bring my camera - it’s a part of who I am. The camera is my way of telling about myself and expressing how I feel. I love traveling. I indulge myself with the great sight and atmosphere of new places, and I feel it becomes a part of me. You are never quite the same person as you were yesterday. Likewise, tomorrow you will be slightly different, yet still open for a nother you. Wherever you glance, humans seem to mimic nature’s designs. While this intrinsic design is surprisingly formed by mathematical measures and rules, we humans seem to draw inspiration from nature to reflect and affect everything in our society. Streets and buildings are o ften designed based on strong geometrical

atterns, and our human nature would p either adapt or reject it. Among a myriad of constructed buildings and alleys, there seem to be a living entity that emerges humans strolling, stressing and moving around from point A to B - maybe even without a fixed purpose. It’s within this social setting, a milieu, wherein something occurs or develops that I want to capture. While I reveal you small glimpses of moments and characters of Auckland downtown, the hidden moments in between are as significant as the rest. That is why they are so precious and valuable because they are still yet to be discovered by you. What I find interesting about a city is that I see it as a living organism that is so agile, strong and growing, but yet so unpredictable and fragile. I see beauty in imperfection. I see new ideas and letters carved in stone. On busy streets, I see small dreams. I see great lies. I see music and disharmony. I see hopeless people in a real world.

I see great believers in a dream world. I see people selling art or being art. I see people making a living, and those who wouldn’t care less. I see contrasts and contradictions. I see passion and predict ions. I see entertainers and heroes, fact and fiction. I see abstraction and reality. I see myself. I would like to thank those who supported and questioned my ideas. Michel Mason who lent her time for my projects. I admire the work of Antoine de Saint- Exupéry. He opened my eyes. The works of Robert Doisneau, Bruce Davidson and William Klein who have influenced this book project. I acknowledge those who were before me, the pioneers in the name of documentary and street photography who have inspired me. 11th June 2013 Lars Chr. Gamborg
