I Beat that Hooker! Back in the good ol’ days when pong was the coolest arcade game and the most violent thing was stomping on magical talking mushrooms, hearing someone say, “I beat that hooker!” would raise some attention. Now if a friend were to say that most people would laugh or just simply ignore it. My point is, what’s the deal with today’s society? Are we becoming used and comfortable with violent and sexual themes or do we just simply not care? In my opinion I think its weird how society thinks sexual themes are worse for children than violent themes. Video game raters like the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) are stricter when it comes to sexual themes. So you can’t have strong sexual themes in a game, but there’re more lenient when it comes to violence in games. This makes people assume that sexual themes are worse than violent themes In our society we’re used to seeing sexual references everywhere from billboards and television commercials to magazines and video games, but you don’t ever see strong sexual content in movies, because the rating system is stricter on it than they are for violence. So go to HBO tonight and see how many movies have extreme violence, then see if there is any strong sexual content. So what I’m trying to say is that we today in this society of ours, we are de-sensitized to violence, that’s why we don’t think it’s bad for children and that’s why we think sexual themes are worse than violent themes. Ok so picture this…you’re playing a video game and you’re in a

city and you come across a beautiful young lady (whore) walking down the street in a short skirt. What do you think would be worse? Scenario#1: You pay her to have sex with you, the screen goes black and you only hear. She then walks away and you go on about your business. Scenario#2: You walk up to her with a baseball bat and start relentlessly bashing her face in to a pulp not showing any mercy. What do you think would be worse? I understand that sexual themes can sometimes be just as bad or even worse than violent themes and that kids might be more persuaded to act on sexual themes. Kids don’t necessarily see violence every day but they’re constantly seeing sexual related content, but if your child can be persuaded that easily than they shouldn’t be playing games with strong suggestive themes. So from the days when arcades were the proto Starbucks, to now when saying, “I beat that hooker!” is an acceptable term, what went wrong? Did we become desensitized or do we just not care anymore? It’s up to you to decide what went wrong but here are some solutions to this rising epidemic. Put more stress on the rating system to ban violent themes for younger audiences, lessen the amount of violence and sexual content in games overall, or don’t let easily persuaded children play violent and sexual games. And remember…it was I who beat that hooker!

How to Balance Homework and Gaming

Did you get an “F” on your last test? If so...you need to read this article...

Addicted gamers are perceived to be people who have So how should a gamer manage his/her time when it comes to games or homework, what should be priority no life at all what so ever being cooped up in their rooms and how long should you spend on each? This was a big all week becoming hermits for a couple days only comproblem for me during school days so I asked Branden ing out to go to the restroom or eat. But Branden says Harger for some advice on how achieved a perfect balance. it actually helps his social life and to meet new friends. “Gaming does not interfere with my social life at all; “Its always good to come home and play for an hour, then start your homework, but you need to make sure its only an it actually in some cases helps it. There are occasions where your friends play the games you hour… if you come home, use your hour play, so you’ll talk to them about it, or of free time, get your homework done in “I’ll get right back on about another hour, then you have the sometimes you meet new people who it and go back to my no play the same game that you do, Thus rest of the day to play.” Branden Said Some games are so good that they suck life-ing that I do so well” making new friends.” Branden Said So when you go home gamers in and make them think the game is crack. Gamers’ Choice ‘09

Branden Harger a ninth grader at Akins High School says one of the most anticipated and highest rated games of 2009 was his top rated game of last year. Along with Assassins Creed2 and Borderlands, Branden says that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare2 (MW2) is the best game of 2009. “Its great graphics and amazing gameplay are outstanding and it never really gets boring.” Branden says Out of the 1100 games released in 2009 only three made the cut in this picky ninth graders system. His selective choosing of games falls in line with what the top rated critics thought of these three games. High school students make up some of the gaming population and they may not know what games for which they are best suited. “The first thing I look for in a game is graphics. If I see that the game has really great graphics, then I’ll look more into it, but if it has really bad graphics, I won’t think much of it, and I’ll wait for a friend who has already bought it to give me his opinion.” Branden Says The second thing Branden looks for in a game is the game play itself. He says if a game has terrible graphics, but great game play, then he might buy it, but if it has decent graphics and boring gameplay, he won’t even consider playing it. “To me, graphics are pretty much everything, but they don’t always matter. Like if you’ve ever played Star Wars Battlefront 2, I’ve never been a huge Star Wars fan, but it’s a really fun game, with bad graphics.” Branden Said Along with game play and Graphics some people like first person shooter, Role Playing Games (RPGs), Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing games (MMORPGs), Action, shooters and many many more. “I love first person shooters, as well as RPGs. I like adventurous types of games, where there is a big world to explore, or many different maps. I love being able to level up and unlock things as I’m having fun with the game.” Branden Says To some people though graphics and gameplay are not every thing, the game needs a great controller layout to have a nice natural flow. With out a great lay-

out there is a physiological avoidance toward the game, which is the exact opposite of what you want to do. But can a perfect controller layout turn someone into a gamer and draw them into the world of gaming? “I’m not that much of a gamer because I only play at my friends house so this is one of the few games that surprise me because it was really easy for me to under stand it and learn quickly. I was pretty happy at that and I think that the whole design of the game made it easy” Lasa Student Matias K. Says So whether or not you’re a hardcore gamer or a /\/0013 (Noob), gamers can agree to disagree…MW2 is the most mentioned game of 2009.

P.S. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (made in 1982 this game was for the atari and has been voted many times as the worst video game in gaming history) is the worst game in history…so don’t play it or you will regret it… A LOT.

The Mario Finale Mario greatest game ever created that was released for the Nintendo Entertainment System.

Art provided by Jordan Saldaña.

In the old days the object of video games was to run around in an 8-bit world smashing barrels and climbing iron structures to help a damsel in distress. Now the game play is based on hopping from planet to planet in search of stars that send you to different worlds. Since 1981 Mario has starred or cameoed in over 150 games to date. This causes many arguments to break out over which Mario game is the best. Of all Mario games released for the Nintendo Entertainment System (or the NES) Super Mario Bros. (SMB) is the best Mario game to be released. It may not have the best graphics, or most advanced enemy AI. However it has creative storyline and world, introduced power-ups, had progressively more challenging bosses, and had simple gameplay. Since SMB release in 1981 the game has sold more than 40 million copies world-wide today (that number increases daily), which when compared to games like Sonic the Hedgehog which has sold only 4 million copies, or The Legend of Zelda which sold only 6.5 million, this is a Screenshot of Mario jumping. vastly larger number. The game had very easy-to-learn and user-friendly controls which when compared to that of Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom, which required very complex controls to be input into the controller to switch weapons, this was much easier for people to enjoy. At the time of SMB’s release the storyline and universe were fresh and exiting, and appealed to the player’s sense of creativity. Newer titles such as Super Mario Galaxy and New Super Mario Bros. have simply “refurbished” the storyline and added one or two new features. The character, Mario (who was also popular from his first 3 appearances in Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr., and Mario Bros.) was given a new setting, where he could kill walking mushrooms, and fight fire-breathing turtles. SMB also introduced an exiting new feature to video games… power-ups. Before Super Mario Bros. The closest you came to power-ups were Power Pellets in PacMan. Although the Power Pellet and the Starman are similar, the Power Pellet granted less power because time limit on them became shorter and shorter as the game continued, and the ghosts revived after being attacked. In SMB you were given the ability to live after getting hit by an

enemy (effectively creating a life bar), run faster, and jump higher thanks to the Super Mushroom, which has been in every Mario game since. And the Fire Flower granted Mario the power to shoot fire at enemies, which made it easier to kill them, as well as keeping you at a safe distance. SMB was challenging as well, which made game play interesting for players, by providing hoards of enemies that, while predictable, made the player have to avoid certain areas at certain times. This meant that even if you knew where the enemies were and how they were going to attack you, you still had to worry about multiple enemies at once. The bosses of each world got progressively harder, instead of having different fighting techniques like in Sonic the Hedgehog, which kept battles interesting and allowed the player to master boss battles with Bowser. This gave the player a certain advantage over Bowser which made play seem more fun. Super Mario Bros. is now a classic game and is still being sold by Nintendo as a playable game on all of their systems because of how popular it was and is. People still continue to by this game for their Wii’s Classic Game Player or download it onto emulators to play them. Princess Peach put it best when she said “Thank you Mario.” for this great game.

Power-Up Clash

We compare Mario’s power-ups over the years Old vs. New style, and decide which comes out on top. This should help any die hard Mario fans decide what Mario Games to buy.

Super Mushroom

Fire Flower

Super Leaf

Hammer Suit

Winner: Super Mushroom Even though the Mega Mushroom gave Mario temporary invincibility and made him huge, it was only in effect for small periods of time, and you could only get it once per level (If you missed it or time ran out that was it). The Super Mushroom was found in every level, assuming that you were Small Mario when hitting a “?” Block. And the effects were indefinite, assuming Mario did not get hit. Winner: Power Flower The Power Flower gave the characters a wider range of powers, and allowed you to access more areas. It also gave Yoshi an ability similar to that of the Fire Flower, which allowed the player to kill enemies almost the same as if using a Fire Flower, which adds to the usefulness of the Power Flower. When combined with the other powers it gave, you could DO more than when using the Fire Flower. Winner: Super Leaf Although the Propeller Mushroom allowed for vertical take-off (something no other Mario Flight Power-Up has done) it had very little float capability, and had no attack move that could be used. The Super Leaf also was not very hindered by its take off requirements because there was always land for you to run on and gain flight with.

Winner: Penguin Suit The Hammer Suit was one of the original costumes and did give the player the ability to throw projectiles and temporarily become immune to damage while ducking, the Penguin Suit allowed you to throw projectiles have better control on ice and in water. It also allowed you to slide across water and ice while running.

What to know to be a Video Game Designer

“All of [video game] design is answering ‘an unexpected problem arising.’” These are the words of Bryon Lloyd. Bryon has worked for companies like Nintendo, Acclaim, and Midway. He has designed various styles of games, from isometric platformers to first-person shooters, and designed for a wide range of people. He focuses on the mechanics and balance of the game, this means he is often working on how the characters, items, enemies and environments interact with one another. Most of his research would go into the mechanics of the game. However most of the time he has no chance to use what he has learned. “Less that 20% of all games that get started, get completed and go to production.” says Bryon, although this generally happens because the business cancels the project, and not because of the game. If it is because of the game you need to learn from that mistake and take that wisdom with you onto your next assignment. When Bryon’s project is Author: CloakNDagger

cancelled he says to himself “If you hang up on failures for too long, you wait too long to look for opportunities.” Those new opportunities will always be started in the same way. When you are designing a new game you are going to pitch, it will usually follow the same process: a) The idea is formed, you decide what style of game it is (FirstPerson Shooter, Side-Scrolling Platformer, or Puzzle Adventure), and you develop the story and characters. b) You then research in depth your idea, looking to see if it has been done before. If it has what worked and what didn’t? What design software did they use? Do you have access to that software? Can you improve on it? Was it too extravagant or bland? Can you add depth to any part of the game? c) You need to pitch the idea to your supervisor and create a design document that will show the controls, story, characters, items, and enemies of the game. If they like the idea it may become a project. Most well funded (or AAA) games can take from 3-6 years to be completed, but in order to even start this process you need to have a good pitch for the game. When pitching it is important to know how your game is going to work and what the fans expectations of the game should be. But if they reject the project this does not mean it will not work, it just means that they do not want to try it. So save your ideas for later use, like if you begin working for a different company. Most of this information has been taken straight from the horse’s mouth. And most of it will be applicable to anyone that wants to be any kind of game designer. So take this knowledge with you as you begin your journey, on the path to becoming a Video Game Designer.

Before I beat a man I went home and practiced on my videogames, just like the rest of the gaming teens in America. This is what Jack Thompson, anti-videogame activist and former attorney, is saying violent games do to teens. Ever since Exidy first came out with the first violent game, Death Race, there has been controversy of violent games making teens act aggressive. Because of this controversy, parents have been worrying about what their children play and restricting them from those kind of games, without knowing if it’s really true. This is unfair to the teens because I personally know a lot of teens that play violent videogames and not one of them acts violent as people like Jack Thompson say they will. OK there might be that one kid who does act violent after playing violent games but it’s not fair that he ruins it for others. It’s the same as the there was a drunk driver who ran over a person and every one got more restrictions because of that one guy I think that the behavior of the teen acts after play-

Pg 14

ing videogames completely depends on the personality of the teen. For example if the teen is easily manipulated, of course he is going to behave aggressive, but for most teens this isn’t this way. In The Psychological Effects of Violent Media on Children article written by Aimee Tompkins in 2003 clearly states that only twelve percent of the children that watch violent television get affected, That’s only twelve percent what about the 88 percent of those teens who don’t act violent, they shouldn’t get the same restrictions as those twelve percent. Yes, games do make you interact with the violence more, but it will still only affect those teens that get easily manipulated. What about the fewer amounts of teens in the twelve percent that don’t get easily manipulated but do act aggressive because of games? These teens are violent because they’re addicted to videogames. When teens are addicted to videogames, just like every other addiction, they don’t want to stop playing, and when they are forced to stop or they are prevented Author: nahtanoj4321

from playing they can become aggressive .In an article by Tammy darling written in 2009 said that videogame addiction is likened to an impulse disorder. But again just like every other addiction it can be fixed with videogame addiction recovery centers, or lessening time played, little by little. So addiction isn’t permanent and it shouldn’t be a reason that restrictions get tighter for teens. People talk about the harm of violent games do to teens but they don’t think about the benefits. Because I play violent games my reaction time is much faster and I don’t panic in emergencies. One example of these things benefiting me is the time that a pan cough fire I dint panic I just moved it in to the sink, grabbed the baking soda and put it out. In an a research done by the American Psychological Association (APA) they tested

122 fifth, six, and seven graders after playing video games and there cognitive and perceptual skills improved. Violent Video games are also used as stress relieve by many people to day including my self. A research done by PopCap games showed that 88% of gamers use video games to relieve stress. Whenever I am stressed out I usually play video games I think that this helps me because in violent video games you can destroy stuff without having to deal with any consequences unlike the real life. A book called Killing Monsters: Why Children Need Fantasy, Superheroes, and Make-Believe Violence shows that video games, specially violent ones can, can improve state of mind and over all happiness. I think that if parents where to be informed more about what video games actually do to you and

some of the benefits then they might just lessen restrictions. But of course not so lose that they let their 3 year old play a M rated game.

How to Choose the Right Game System Every year people buy a lot of game systems. Most people are happy with what they get, but some aren’t. They might just need to learn how to look for the right system. . “I researched whether it was a good idea to buy my Wii for months. And then, after I saw that they incorporated a workout board to practice yoga and strength training, I knew the Wii was for me,” Wii owner Brandi Richey said. Most People try to pick their system based on “which one is better, “ but each system has its own qualities making them different from the others. These qualities satisfy different players needs and preferences. For example the Wii Company made the system more for family interaction, the Xbox 360 is for multiplayer play, and the Playstation 3 is more for single player play. “It has a lot of multiplayer games, so can play with friends,” said Xbox 360 owner Dominic W. One of the qualities that make each system different is the amount of memory. The amount of memory affects how much you can save on your system, and each game system has different amount of memory in the hard drive. For example the Xbox 360 has 120 to 250 Gigabytes of memory, the Playstation 3 has the same and the Nintendo Wii’s memory is 512 Megabytes, but you can buy an Secure Digital (SD) card that saves more depending on the capability of the SD card. “The reason I like the Playstation 3 is that its more like a computer and that you can store all your music files on it, ”said Playstation 3 owner said Emerald C. The next thing a player should look at is the system’s capabilities. Each system has different kind of capabilities. The Wii can play Wii games and is the only system that is backward capable, its backwards capability allows the sys-

tem to play Gamecube games, you can also connect the Nintendo DS and play The Wii also has wifi connection, which can be used to connect to the Internet and remote play with the DS. The Wii also has a free online play service. In addition the Wii can also play CDs, you can view photos listen to mp3 files that are saved on SD card and you can browse the Internet on the system. “I like the Wii pretty mush because it has Wii Sports, It helps you get healthy and you can really get into the game,” said Wii owner Alec B. The Xbox 360 company is more focused on the way the system plays the Xbox 360 games but the Xbox 360 can play DVDs, CDs, you can listen to music files and view photographs that be saved on the system. “I would recommend people that like to play with friends online to buy this system. You can play online with people and use tactics to defeat other opponents. Another type of gamer would be one that likes sports because its graphics look so realistic that it feels like an actual game,” said Xbox 360 owner Sebastian C, The Playstation 3, aside from the ability of playing Playstation 3 games it can play the DVDs and Blu-ray

disc, which makes it adequate for a person who likes to watch a large quantity of movies. The Playstation can also play CDs; it can store mp3 files and photographs that can also be viewed on the system. Like the Wii the Playstation 3 has wifi, a free online service, it has remote play and browse the Internet. “I chose the PS3 because of its capacity to play games, stream video and audio from my computer and play Blu-ray movies,” said Playstation 3 owner Timothy Harrison. The last thing that a player should look at is at extra qualities like color, shape and the video game library. If Payers where to take all these qualities in to mind when buying video game systems then they might be able t
