Letter From the Editors
Welcome to Generation 21! During the early stages of creating this magazine, we had an abundance of topics we wanted to cover. Our interests ranged from food, advertising, business, and more! With such a broad subject range, we almost couldn’t decide how to put it all into one magazine. We wanted to talk about all of the things that surround us everyday and make our lives meaningful. We realized that we were forgetting the thing that defines the lives of our generation most of all: technology. People growing up in the twenty-first century live lives
enveloped and led by technology. We were born with it, and we can’t imagine life without it. Being able to have the world at our fingertips defines how we operate within the world, and so we defined our magazine by the same thing. Technology is inspired by a desire to create a better world, and it inspires us to know more, inspires us to be better for the world. Technology shows us how smart, how amazing humanity really is, and how much more we can be. With that in mind, we welcome you to our magazine, to Generation 21.

One of those services is OverDrive, an online library platform that works with over 30,000 libraries in more than forty countries to bring books to the fingertips on a phone screen. OverDrive can be used for almost anything books can be used for, including education, language learning, professional development, entertainment OverDrive’s Director of Brand Marketing and Communications, David Burleigh. This additional method for accessible literature is guided and made possible by technology and the internet. On top of that OverDrive makes it cheap and affordable, especially for students. ith a single tap of “share” on a handheld device, businesses in the culinary world have been able to communicate with their customers better than ever. The world is evolving, and each generation brings on a new wave of trends, interests, and foods. Many modern restaurants and specialty culinary businesses have chosen to break out of the preconceived notions of the food service ideal and have provided twists to the standard menus. The restaurants have taken into account the new advancements regarding popularizing food on social
media, and using online resources to allow for more convenience in the whole food process. These new ideas for the culinary world have slowly been shaping it to fit the interests and needs of the new generations. A d d i t i o n a l l y, with new technological advances, the culinary world has become increasingly able to follow and participate in trends that are appearing and developing. “We just saw an opportunity to do something that had never been done before, so we went for it,” said Kara Jordan, owner and co-founder of the restaurant Blenders and Bowls. Blenders and Bowls specializes in the making of acai bowls, a newly
popularized food in social media outlets (primarily Instagram). Acai bowls are thick smoothies made with frozen acai berries and topped with healthy toppings, then eaten in a bowl with a spoon.
Jordan founded Blenders and Bowls with her best friend since 7th-grade, Erin Downing. “After moving to Austin from Hawaii we really craved acai bowls,” Jordan explained, “I ate them all the time when I lived in Hawaii and they were nowhere to be found in Austin, so we decided to start a food truck.” Thus, the beachy and tropical Blenders and Bowls was born. The acai bowls were created to appeal to the average consumer. The array of fruits laid on top of the blended acai berries aim to provide a stunning picture, intended to create a dish that is aesthetically pleasing to the eye. Because of this, users have been urged to share their beautiful pictures with their peers on social media.
