What better way to show your partiotism than with American flag shorts? Not only are they cute but they can be made in no time at all! All you need is a few cheap materials and you’re set. Follow these four simple steps to create shorts you’ll want to wear every day.
1
The first step in is to cut out stars in some paper or cardstock. Choose a size that goes with the shorts you are painting. Then place the stars on the left side of the shorts and trace them lightly with a pen.
3
Once the stars are painted, you can move on to the stripes. First, line the right side of the shorts with painters tape. Then paint the non taped parts white. Make sure the tape is flat on the shorts so you get the straightest lines possible. Source: Our LIfe in the Queen City

2
Pick the stars up off of the shorts and paint inside the stencil you made in step one. Use white fabric paint for the best results. Try to make the stars as white as possible so that after much washing and wearing they are still visible.
4
The last step is to paint the red stripes. Remove the tape and paint these spaces red. For a more vintage look spread the color so that it looks darker and less finished. Let them dry flat for 4 hours and after 72 hours wash and wear them!

eidi Krell was getting her daughter ready for school, when she got an alert from her computer. She wearily walked over to her computer and looked at the screen. The message read “I would like to order some shirts for my company, could you make them for me?” Krell, a local business owner, makes and sells baby clothes and quilts from her house. She has been doing this for about 16 years and just recently started her business back up again. “There’s this store from the town that I’m from that wanted their employees to all wear the same T-shirts,” Krell said. “So I created a screen using the design that they gave me and I made the shirts.” Heidi Krell attended Sewanee University, also known as The University of the South, a small liberal arts college located between Nashville and Chattanooga, Tenn. “Well I’ve always been into art,” Krell said. “I knew when I was little that I wanted to do something that had to do with art. So I majored in art in college and I got out of school with a bachelors degree in fine arts.” After taking some time off from school, Heidi thought about going to graduate school for fine arts, but instead went back to school to become a teacher. She earned her teacher’s degree from Colorado State University and became an art

and they told me I could teach myself.” This was the first time she had an interest in sewing, so she bought a pattern she liked and started using her grandmother’s sewing machine regularly. “Also, I started to read books and figure thing outs by trial and error,” Krell said. “It was really frustrating at the beginning, because you would be going along and doing really well and then you would really mess up.
So it was just patience and I worked on my projects whenever I had free time because I wasn’t working.” After a while she finally learned how to sew and made her daughter Matilda, a quilt. The quilt was the first item that Krell ever made and it jump started her business. It took Krell a while to make her first quilt because she was new to the quilt-making process. “It depends on the size and

ost young girls have dreamed about being a model at one point or another, but have you ever met a real model? You’re about to. For this issue, we’ve interviewed a local Austin model. Don’t let the fact that she’s an austinite fool you, she’s lived in places like Milan and Sydney, and worked with some of the best photographers and designers in the world. Allison Walton lived in a small town until she was 17. She acted in high school and a modeling agency discovered her pictures, from there she decided to give modeling a shot. As Allison says, “you’re not gonna go very far staying in Granbury, Texas,” so she didn’t. The modeling industry can be a scary place, and Allison admits it. “Truthfully, I do believe you gotta treat it like the business it is, you have to be careful, but you can really go far if you’re smart. It’s exposed me to the world, it’s exposed me to amazing people and cultures everywhere.” When asked what her worst work experience was, Allison had a lot to say. “When I was 18 and I lived in Milan, people tried to go too far. It was an outstanding experience, to work with someone that you always wanted to work with. And to be able to live in places like Milan or Sydney, these incredible cities, and also make money. You don’t just vacation, it’s like getting paid to travel, its incredible.” “You can become really self conscious really quickly, but if you work on who you are and staying secure with who you are, you can be resilient in that sense.” So girls, stay secure with who you are. Don’t let anything distract people from the real you, and focus on the positive. Beauty isn’t just in the way you look, it’s in the way you walk and the way you talk, it’s the way you treat yourself.

ot every piece of jewelry is inspired by the simple nature surrounding us. It can take a certain creative touch to make something so captivating and basic at the same time. “My designs are based on organic shapes and textures found in nature and the natural processes of fabricating the metal,” Rachel Roberts, owner of Mingle Jewelry, said, “I was not interested in making pieces with angular features and perfectly straight lines. I am able to explore the imperfect and organic look of natural shapes through my process of making the jewelry.” Roberts sells her products in stores all over the country and makes 100 percent of it herself. It isn’t easy to start a business and get your name and products out there, but Roberts was smart and did what she could to get started. “I mainly relied on word of mouth to grow my business,” Roberts said. “I started having jewelry parties with friends and family. These parties continued to blossom and more and more people started to see more of my jewelry.” Roberts feels her business is in a good place, but to improve it even more, she’ll need to get her name out to more companies. Because the digital world is becoming more and more prevalent, it is important that she put her products on the Internet. This way customers can easily view and purchase them. “I am currently working on a new collection and all new website that will be a fresh new look for Mingle Jewelry. I have let out some sneak peaks of the new collection, and people have responded very well,” Roberts said. Another good promotion for Mingle has been appearances in popular magazines. So far the company has been mentioned in People magazine, Austin Monthly, and Dallas Child. These opportunities help out a lot with promoting Rachel’s business. Based on the effects of this publicity, as she continues being recognized, her business will grow more and more. “They helped me to gain more progressive recognition as well as a larger national audience,” Roberts said. In order to please all of her customers, Roberts must work hard to produce all of the jewelry that has been ordered. But this had become second nature to her, after working for 10 years getting all of these orders

It is a process that has allowed very efficient production time. Within a couple of days I can produce 50 pieces of jewelry.” Roberts loves designing her simple jewelry. It allows her to be creative and do her job at the same time. Just like she makes all of her jewelry, Roberts also designs it all. “The design process is my favorite part. I love working on new ideas and especially love when I create a great new design that achieves my aesthetic goals and the classic Mingle look,” Roberts said. Step by Step: 1.

The first step in this project is to take your white canvas and tape it. The most simple way to do this is to cut equal length pieces of tape. Place the tape in zig zags across the canvas. You can put as many zig zags as you want to cover the canvas. Try to spread them out as evenly as possible to get the best results. Painters tape is the best tape to use for this part because it leaves clean lines across the canvas and is easy to peel off. You may have to retape the canvas more than once to get it to look just like you want it to. As soon as you’ve done this you’re ready to move onto step two. The next step is to paint your canvas. Choose your favorite color or a shade that will go with whatever else you have in your room. You can either spray paint or just straight brush paint over the tape. To make the art more interesting you can alternate colors in between the zig zags. Once this layer of paint has had time to dry you can add the glitter. Another option is to wait until after you have pulled the tape off of so that the glitter covers the entire canvas even where the colored paint isn’t. Once you have done this set the art out to dry before beginning the third and final step. The last step is to peel off the tape. Wait until the paint is completely dry so that after you peel the tape, it doesn’t start spreading. If you didn’t put glitter on your canvas you can do it after you take the tape off or not at all. After you have let the glitter dry (or not), it is time to hang your artwork. Chose a room with not much on the walls or anywhere you want. At this step you can add anything you’d like over the original chevron. A common addition is a monogram or your name to personalize the art for a bedroom or office. You can add anything you want to make your art unique.

Whether you’re boating around on the lake or just relaxing on a hot summer day, everyone needs a shirt with a frocket. These additions can be attached to any shirt you want and add a special touch just where you need it. This fun design can make any boring shirt stand out. 1. Choose a Pattern
38
Chevron
Polka Dot
Zebra
Checkered
Vintage
Camo
2. Find a T-Shirt After you have chosen your favorite pattern or just a simple color, the next step is to find a shirt. It can be patterned or just a plain color. Make sure to pick a shirt that goes with the pattern you chose in step one. You can use an old shirt that you don’t wear any more or buy a new shirt. Either way will give you a cute shirt you’ll never want to take off.
3. Cut the Pattern Once you have chosen your pattern, cut a pocket that goes with the size of your shirt. For example if you are making a smaller shirt you’ll need a smaller pocket. Cut the fabric in a pentagon using whatever dimensions you feel looks best. You may want to trace the pocket onto the shirt and fabric before you cut it so that you make your shirt as efficiently as possible. Now you are ready to move on to the final step.
4. Sew it on to the shirt Now that you have your shirt and the pocket cut out, you are ready to sew the pocket onto the shirt. You can trace the pocket onto the shirt to make sure it is lined up evenly. Use thread that matches your pattern and color so that it isn’t visible. Place the pocket on the shirt and sew it on. Now that your shirt is finished, you can wear it as often as you want. Wash in cold water with like colors for the best results.
