Producing Music By Ryan Aparicio

ustin is known as the music capital of the world. Musicians come to Austin during festivals, attracting thousands of fans, with some fans wishing to be huge musicians as well. There are large music festivals such as Austin City Limits and South

is a hard journey. “Modern day, what’s really cool about technology the barrier for entry is a lot lower than it used to be meaning you don’t have to have access to a multi-millionaire studio,” Ballentine said. “If you have a laptop and a microphone and access to the

beginner musician to get into specifically recording and producing music, leveling the playing field.” Having a microphone, laptop, and a connection to the internet are the helpful to to starting a musical career, but the most essential factor needed is having a unique way of expression through music. Some ways of

trainer, said effective practice is important. “If you want to be good at anything in the world you just make a mental commitment, to everyday you want to do that for five minutes,” she said, “and the idea there it’s more about a regular commitment daily than ‘hey I am going to make a commitment to do this for two, three, four

hours a day everyday,’ well you can’t because you have school, you have work, you have all these other things going on.” One of the hardest part of learning something new is starting a routine. Many might decide to practice two hours a day everyday, but that isn’t how it should be done, the five minute

rule is what Allison calls it, this rule is more of a psychological way of making one practice. Allison became aware that practicing something for two hours a day is almost impossible when starting because people are busy, what usually happens is that its put off for the next day, and end up not being done

at all. The five minute rule is to get one to sit down and start practicing, because it is easier to find five minutes to practice, rather than an hour or more. In five minutes a quick drum beat can be created and scales can be practiced. “But most of the time five minutes are up and you keep going,” Allison said. “It’s like the five minutes is a trick to get you to sit down and just do it and if you stop at five minutes you don’t have to feel guilty you did your five minutes, it’s a guilt free commitment, sometimes five minutes turn to twelve hours, ten hours, five hours, sometimes five minutes is five minutes.” When people start to learn something new they usually are inexperienced, no

one ever just picks up something new and instantly becomes an expert on it. Another approach to learning an instrument is through real life experience, Joey Pavonelli, admissions manager for Recording Connection Audio Institute, has a different mindset for teaching.  “So it’s like a real world approach opposed to the traditional classroom,” Pavonelli said. Instead of teaching as a traditional school, Recording Connection Institute likes to pair their students with professionals from the field they are interested in, students gather real work experience and are able to create connections in the industry. This makes it easier for students to obtain a job in the industry because of

the connections. “Music is a tough world, if there is anything you are passionate about and is kinda a normal career path do that instead because music is a tough road,” Allison said. “It doesn’t mean that you can’t do that you have to have to undying burning desire to do it and never give up, if you can do that you can do that you’ll do it you’ll get somewhere doing something that you love, but if it’s something that you’re like ‘it’s just that’ it’s not going to work out.”

hey come with guitars, hats, and boots. People are happy when they begin to sing. They are mariachis. They were students in the late ‘90s, the members of Mariachi Suroeste of San Marcos needed money to pay for their needs. They had the opportunity to start a mariachi group, so they went for it. Since they

wanted to play more music, whenever they saw the chance, they took it. Suroeste member Carlos Maldonado said, they started their group at Southwest Texas State. Now the group is filled with other people with diverse backgrounds, and from as far away as Roma, Harlingen, and Laredo, Texas. This group has been performing for the past 20 years They commit

their time even though they have other jobs apart from the group. They work with passion and effort to make there music more upbeat. “But for music, I play it with a lot of heart because I like to listen to it that way,” Maldonado said in Spanish. They made it clear that they are very proud of their work and enjoy playing music for themselves. They love seeing

people on their proudest moments and on their happiest. Juan Cavazoz, another mariachi from San Marcos, said that music has to be well treated. “I advise you to study music and respect music with all your heart and your intelligences,” Cavazoz said in Spanish. Cavazoz and Maldonado have been in this group since it began. They both said that every time they play

music they feel that the world is perfect. These mariachis also like to inspire kids to try and be mariachis themselves. “And also keep humble and understand that there will always be something new to learn and be able to take criticism in a positive way,”Cavazoz said in spanish. “I also advise you to be good people and with good manners. Reaching the best groups in the world does not only

have to do with how your instrument plays, it also has a lot to do with how they work with others and how they get along as people.” Since they took all the time and effort, they been playing instruments since they were in middle school. didn’t get the chance. “And what happened was that I wanted to play the saxophone, and when it was the night of instruments to choose the instrument to play they had run out of saxophones,” Maldonado said. “Then I had to choose the trumpet. I had to play it, and with that I stay with it. I already have years with it, since I was 11 and now I’m 41. 30 years playing the trumpet,”

Cavazoz plays the guitar and percussion. He said that sometimes he plays the guitarrón or the vihuela. “When I was in high school the guitarron graduated and went to school, and someone had to learn it,” Cavazoz said. “That someone was me. The truth was that it was not very difficult but it was fun to be the physical size of the smallest of the group but to play the strongest

and biggest instrument haha since then I played the three instruments of the mariachi harmony: The guitarrón, the vihuela, and the guitar. And also we do not forget the first instrument that we all played first.” But both of them sing. They perform in and out of San Marcos.
