rofessional costumes help actors fit into the scenery on stage, and get into character. Costume professionals are the ones who make this possible. Ken Webster, has been working with Hyde Park Theatre since 1983, a year after the establishment of Hyde Park Theatre, and has been running the theater as a producer and an artistic director since 2001. “I’m the producer [and the] artistic director,” said Webster. “I’ve been

producing plays and directing plays here since 1983, but I’ve been running it for 17 years, since 2001.” Chasity Taylor has worked in kidsActing for about two years, but before, she actually had her own clothing line, but decided to stop, because it didn’t feel great and felt bored. “So my job here is I am costume shop supervisor and I’m also a … designer, so I design most of the costumes and I just run the shop, making sure everything goes smoothly,” Taylor said. “I came from the 12 Fashion World, so I went to college for fashion and I
even made my own [fashion] line….and I was bored.” Jerry Durham is one of the managers and the person in charge of the buying in Lucy in Disguise and has been working there for almost nine years. “I’m one of the managers in charge and I’m also in charge of all the buying, so anything that the store owners or gets in goes past me,” Durham said. “I have worked here for almost 9 years.” kidsActing is a production company in Austin which has a very unique demographic. Usually, some theater
productions would include children and adults, but in kidsActing, it’s all about the kids. “kidsActing probably the only theater arts school…. that’s only geared to children,” said Valerie Cline, a director of marketing of kidsActing. We don’t have an adults section, we don’t have another professional theater going on, we are all about kids. So the target audience….is we have two, we have kids who love to sing, dance, act, and do stage combat and we have kids who don’t necessarily love that but understand that when you get on stage and you are

a lot more better, like new friendships and great teamwork. “It was a great place to work, we pay our actors, we do exciting plays, we have a great company of actors, designers, and directors, but we also cast outside of the company, as well,” Webster said. It can also affect the demographic the place has, if it does plays or not, in a very amazing way, like adding a piece of creativity. “I’m just really proud to work here and I do think that we’re like a part of Austin culture now, because we’ve been here in the same place for so long, so, when people say ‘Keep Austin Weird,’ I always feel like the store is a really good example of that,” Durham said. In the end, with work like that, comes inspiration. Something that can motivate a person to keep trying, even if times are hard in their job. “I really think my inspiration for doing this job is just going out there doing what I initially thought I was supposed to do and realizing along the way did I’ve been long in the costume world,” Taylor said. “I like costuming so much because, unlike fashion, the clothing tells the story, the costumes in the show helped make the show what it is.” 13

1968 Clothing from 1968 isn’t too different from the clothing in 2018. Some clothing from the time is very similar to the clothing we have today, like polo shirts. Even though they may have some similarities with each other, they have their differences as well. For starters, the clothing in 1968 is basically more based on pattern. For women, they go for the flower pattern, stripes that go vertical or horizontal, or any pattern in particular that people today find strange. For men, it’s mostly plain or have stripes that go in both ways. The focus isn’t only on the pattern, but also on the types of clothes they wear. bottom, and top and includes men that have shirts with collars that are tucked in their shorts or show them wearing these nice suits that people usually wear when they are going somewhere formal and dress professionally. On a magazine released in the summer, women wear these onesiesin a beach scenery, while men would be on a golf scenery with Polo shirts having a steak-out. 20
2018 Clothing from the year 2018 has improved a little bit than it did in 1968. For women, they don’t only wear dresses for magazine shoots, but also pants, shorts, and bikinis, so today, we have more variety and style than the year 1968. For men, their variety in style and clothing has increased, as well. Male models would usually wear in today’s magazines either a tank top, a suit, a shirt with a collar/a polo shirt, or not even wear any upper garments at all. We are paying less attention than we are with the design of the clothing the models wear that would usually try and expose some part of the body, which is why some clothing try and expose the abs or in som cases, the chest.
