Return of the Horns The upcoming football season for the Texas Longhorns By Andres Hernandez 4, Glued

T

exas is back Folks!” ESPN announcer Joe Tessitore made this declaration following the Texas Longhorn’s 2016 victory over then no. 10 ranked Notre Dame. Ironically, this phrase became a meme used to mock the continued, historic failures the Longhorn football program suffered under thenhead coach Charlie Strong. Following that season opening win over the Fighting Irish, the Longhorns floundered to a second consecutive 5-7 season culminating in an embarrassing loss to a Kansas football team who themselves were on a record losing streak.

Much to Longhorn fans’ chagrin, Texas was back in the proverbial cellar, a far cry from the National Championship contender fans’ and pundits expect them to be. The glory days of Vince Young and Colt Mccoy were but a distant memory, and in the “what have you done for me lately” world of college football, Charlie Strong failed to deliver. As such, he met the same fate as the man he replaced, Mack Brown, an unceremonious dismissal which splintered the fan base between those who preached patience and those who believed the Texas brand was

too big to not w i n i m m e d i a t e l y. The gargantuan task of leading the Longhorns out of the desert was passed to another up and coming coach, Tom Herman. “Texas is Back!” The fans have now become numb to these types of statements and to the hype that surrounds the football team year in and year out. Seemingly every season following Texas’ last national championship appearance in 2009 the same rhetoric is repeated. Fans and pundits rave about top ranked recruiting classes. Coaches speak of a change in culture. Assurance of an improved offense, by the realization of a true quarterback. The burnt orange Kool Aid cup runneth over as major sports websites, magazines, and odds makers claim that this may be the year that Texas finally turns it around.

“I think our fan base is as passionate as they come. Of course, this comes with issues, such as unrealistic expectations.” James Klinect a Former Student trainer Yet, as the fans drink from what seems to be the holy grail of the season in which they will retake their seat as one of the best college teams in the nation, the illusion fades away leaving a grim truth. The savior of a quarterback turns out not to be a knight in shining armor and the dream of retaking the respect that the fans know that the team deserves slips through wide open fingers of a defeated team. In the months leading up to each new season, no matter the broken promises and unfulfilled pledges, the unrelenting hype machine starts up again and, the cycle repeats. However, following Texas’ first winning season in three years fans are

cautiously optimistic that Tom Herman can break this cycle. But the question remains, when will Texas be back? This is the question that dwells in many fans minds. Including that of of James Klinect a former UT student trainer who is a avid fan who truly believes that the program has the ability to succeed. “I think our fan base is as passionate as they come,” Klinect said. “Of course, this comes with issues, such as unrealistic expectations, but I would rather be associated with fans that care about success than not.” Due to these lofty expectations, when coach after coach did what they could to make progress it seemed miniscule to what was expected from them. This was worsened by the expectations of some fans who wanted to see some signs of improvement in the program. Yet Lenard Cobb a former UT Athlete, was one of few who still believed at the time that what the program outside the Darrell as a whole needed was in Austin. Photo by patience. “When coach Strong arrived on campus, what we needed as a

program was patience,” said Cobb. “It is not impossible but I believe it is still very difficult to win with a young team and my opinion is that the program, fans, and alumni need to be patient.” When Strong arrived as the head coach at UT, the team was weakened by injuries to key players such as the quarterback and on the offensive line. The second year, the team was made up of predominantly underclassmen, meaning it was A National Champinionship football singed by every unlikely that the member of the Longhorn football team of the year 2006 hype that had surrounded the This team won due to the leadership of their Quarterback season could Vince Young Photo by Andres Hernandez. have been fulfilled, but Coach Strong “I thought Mack Brown do are one remember that you promised that he would bring success back to had a great, great era of are at “the” UT, but two, there UT. The situation was worsened football here but I do believe at is something else out there by the fans and the heads of the the end some of the staff and worth fighting for. Some of the university being unsatisfied with some of the the players became kids that are going to these the results that Charlie Strong complacent with the idea other schools are disappointed was producing. All these factors that because you are at “the” that UT did not recruit them so amounted to the team not only University of Texas you would they want to beat UT. So as a being inexperienced, but being automatically win,” Cobb said. UT athlete you have to have the inexperienced and rushed in the “So I believe that some of the same fight, grit, and bite that work kind of went down hill.” the other athletes across the training process. “So in my opinion, what the country have. So not accepting 6, Glued current stock of athletes need to second place is a good start.”

“I think as long as we had our fans, that’s all that mattered.” Micheal Griffin Former UT football

When the UT’s football program was at its peak, there was a sense of invincibility which led to arrogance around not only the fans, but the players and staff as well. The program as a whole started to believe that since it was UT that no other factors played a role in them getting and staying at that level of play. This was not a healthy mentality, so the once great machine of a program began to rust. A former player for the Longhorn football team, Michael Griffin, states what he believes the team must do to get back on track and achieve their goals. “You have to want it more than anyone else,” Griffin said. “You have to love the game of

football and give and sacrifice to win at all cost. Selfless is the main piece to the puzzle. There is no ‘i’ in ‘team.’ Until they have that, they won’t compete. But I think they are getting there.” At the end of Mack Brown’s career as the head coach of the UT football program, the team lost the drive to compete on the national stage. This drive could not be rekindled by coach Strong and changes in the athletic department’s leadership needed to be made, so UT replaced Strong with coach Herman. “The changes in Athletic Department leadership along with Coach Herman coming onboard has put us on a path to a National Championship,” Klinect said. “I’m not sure when it will happen, but I’m sure that we will be in a position to get there one day.” Coach Herman seems to be breathing new life into the debilitated Longhorn football program. Due to his vision, a new wave of enthusiasm has erupted in the UT community with many seeing a road to success being paved by Herman. “This year we finally have a reasonable amount of players that are upperclassmen,” said

Cobb. “For the last couple of years we were always lacking in having depth and experience. So I would definitely say today it would have to be that we actually have a good group of seniors, juniors, and sophomores which is something we haven’t had in a while.” There is a lot to be excited for in the upcoming 2018 college football season. Many believe that this will be the year that the team finally retakes its place in the college football world. However, the fans must be wary of the hype around the team and that it is still only the teams’ second year under Coach Herman. If given time to mature and develop, the team will be successful, but if they are rushed and beaten down then, the cycle will simply restart and the program will be at square one. “I’m drinking the Tom Herman Kool-Aid and I like it a lot,” said Klinect. Although opinions vary on how to get there, there is one constant from all those surrounding the Longhorn football program, a desire for Texas to be back.

Glued:

How exactly does YouTube differ from other forms of visual media like TV and movies?

Groom:

So many ways, but here’s three quick ones. [First]Direct contact with your audience - on Youtube you find out really quickly what viewers think about your videos, and they don’t pull punches. But if they love your videos, they will also let you know. [Second]Experimentation - you can experiment with video duration, style and format all the time on Youtube. You can take creative risks in a way that you never could in TV and movies, because of the budgets involved. [Third] Creative control - on Youtube, you usually have total control over what you create, whereas in TV and movies you always need to please networks, executives, producers, etc. Again, this can be both good and bad most creative work benefits from the input of others. But sometimes it can tend to lead to a final product that is not truly distinctive - that lacks that original enthusiasm and passion of its creator.

Sounds Like Teen Melodies

Counselors recommend music for students in school. By Erandi Urrieta

t’s 4:30 in the afternoon, a student arrives home from school and puts his backpack away. He turns on music and starts doing the day’s assignment. Classical and instrumental music helps enrich people in their daily lives, but so does every other genre of music. Different musical genres and songs help teens concentrate academically and communicate their feelings with family and the people surrounding them. Not only does music help teens at school and their emotional being but it helps them develop coping skills, to overcome shyness, to communicate and speak up. These are all important skills in a teen’s life to have a great mental health. Carmen Luna has been playing music since she was a little girl in Veracruz, Mexico,

for music. She now dedicates her music and passion to the Iglesia Cristo Rey in downtown Austin. “When I sing and play an instrument and see the fruits of it, to see people happy, it makes me want to share that same feeling back to my community and other people,” said Luna. She has such a passion and motivation for music that she has decided to share and teach others what she knows about how music can affect lives in a positive way. Counselor at Reagan Early College High School and former English language arts teacher at Webb Middle School, Celina Lopez said music helps her students. “I know for a lot of my students that I work with use music as a coping skill, whenever they’re having a hard time or overwhelmed or things are not looking positive for them,” Lopez said. “They’re

able to turn to music and help with those feelings.” For Lopez, music helps her students in many ways but especially emotionally. It lets students express and develop their communication towards her, and helps with coping skills. Learning to express and communicate their feelings

towards people is something everybody should do and be comfortable doing. “For some students, music does help them concentrate in class and just having that background music does help,” she said. Lopez might have a strong o p i n i o n towards the emotional role of m u s i c in teens lives but she also d o e s agree that music helps students concentrate academically and focus better in school, although music is regulated and sometimes not even accepted at schools. Alejandra Barrios, who graduated from UT with a journalism degree and now works as a SEO Content Producer for an online newspaper expresses her point of view on music. Music was one of Barrios’ great support systems while in school. She always knew music would get her through anything and it was always and will always be there for her. Music has helped Barrios throughout most of her school years and still does up to now with her stressful job and busy life. It helped her develop coping skills for her stress and to express her emotions with her family more frequently. “It’s an art that makes me

feel happy and passion for,” Barrios said. “It’s a way to relax myself and it helps me forget the stress.”
