Letter from the editor
This magazine is the product of four individuals’ summer. We have worked hard to put this magazine together. The topic of this magazine is sports science. Realistically, it’s more sports than science. We chose this topic because sports and science are topics that we love. We all took a deep dive into our favorite sports to create this multi-sport masterpiece. All our stories cover our favorite sports. We have basketball, football, soccer, and skateboarding. We want the reader of this magazine to finish reading and have a better understanding of sports with a little bit of health science. Now, please enjoy the first issue of Austin Athletes.

Local Soccer Teams By Arnold Calderon

occer is considered one of the most popular sports worldwide. There are two teams of eleven players both fighting for victory.Becoming a soccer player takes lots of practice and labor. Juan Diaz, a facility trainer from Soccer Hub. “Work, effort, dedication, support from your dad your mom and a little bit of luck,” Diaz said “.”Be with the adequate people to be able to reach being a pro.” Michel an elite coach from soccer shots has a similar idea to Diaz’. “The same thing that it takes

for everything,” Michel said. “Proximity to people that know more than you and are better than you is really, really important you need to have clear routines, expectations, goals and
“Be with the adequate people to be able to reach being a pro.” - Juan Diaz, facility trainer make sure that their challenging enough not to completely injure you or demotivate, but just keep you going in the next path. You’re always raising the bar higher and higher and your surrounding
yourself with great intelligent people and that you’re committed to have a great vision for what you’re set to accomplish.” When someone is determined, willing to do anything, and have nothing in their way to stop them from reaching a goal or dream, they’ll for sure reach them. When someone starts thinking negative, wanting to give up, or stop trying their obviously going to quit.

Having a good relationship with a coach is key to succeeding because if the student has a bad relationship with a coach the training isn’t going to go so smooth. “Were so connected that most students don’t even call me coach they say my name instead, Juan,” Diaz said. Diaz’ strategy of connecting with students is just one of many. “Their super fun their young we coach students two-eight little kids, so we don’t have the kind of relationship you would have with a teenager,” Janet a recruitment coordinator at soccer shots said. Each coach has their own way of coaching and connecting with

their students. Weather its having fun, socializing, motivating, or just playing. “There’s really good healthy boundaries and also very playful it’s not too serious where we cant have fun,” Michel said. “It’s a good mix of clear expectations good boundaries and having a great time.” When a student finds a coach that they think will motivate, encourage, and teach. The student will for sure be learning quickly. When a student is with a coach that is super strict and doesn’t even smile the student might learn something, but the student will probably end up hating that sport.

Tips for beginners: When you try something new you don’t always like it. Like when you try a new food most of the time people judge food by its appearance, but that’s wrong they already don’t like it without even trying it. Same with sports someone can think wow that’s really boring when they haven’t tried playing it. “The consistency, discipline, be on time with your classes, always be ready to work not only with one coach but two or three,” Diaz said, “because if your going to be
3
good you’ll need to be with the one that prepares you physically and the one that shows you the technique.” It might be hard to start a new habit since your not used to it but if your willing to learn you’ll get pretty far. “Stick with it, never give up on it, and have fun,” Janet said. When someone ever feel like giving up on a sport because they don’t like it or just aren’t good they shouldn’t because all those hours or minutes of
practice will be thrown away as if they never happened, so always be willing to give it your 100 percent. “Desire, motivation, and commitment, are the daily habits that will get you better and better, so if you have those three things there’s no doubt that your going to get to the next level,” Michel said. When someone is beginning a habit they should never at any moment let it go. Give it your all Like coach Janet said, “never give up on it.”

O A Guide to Basketball By Nicolás Gallego

he game of basketball is not just a sport, it’s an art. When played right basketball is beautiful to
watch. Basketball allows people of all types to play as a team while showcasing individual talents. The offense puts a rubber ball through a hoop with a net hanging from it in order to score while the defense tries to stop them. If a shot is missed and a player grabs the ball that is called a rebound. When a player doesn’t have an open shot and passes the ball to an open

It’s “When my shots aren’t strategies to good work. try to make falling, I really try to create First of all their team you have for my teammates.” the best. to have -Tristen Licón, basketball player “ I t ’ s a good tough ‘cause philosophy you got all for a team. different personalities all different You have to have that first. There types of players and to make that all are a lot of coaches that, that’s not come together and work, it’s hard,” their philosophy. They may go with
one superstar player and we want him to have the ball all the time.” There are five different positions in basketball that suit the physical and mental attributes of players. All five will be on the court at all times. The first position is the point guard. The point guard’s job is to take care of the ball. They are also tasked with finding open teammates in order to find the easiest shot to score. The point guard is usually the smallest and fastest on a team. The next position is the shooting guard. shooting guards have to have a good midrange shot and they need to be able to shoot threes. The third position is the small forward. The small forward has to be a good defender, close up shooter, and midrange shooter. While players play the game referees make the calls. “We have to enforce the rules. That’s what we’re there for,” said Nakita Guillory, UIL referee. “We’re officials. We can’t just throw out a rule just because we dislike the rule but in terms of how we determine how we call, I agree, the players will determine how we call, how tight we call, how loose we call. In the beginning of my games, I’m going to call the games tight and then I will back off based on the student’s ability to play through plays and it depends on whether you’re calling boys or girls. Boys do not like you calling every ticky tack foul. Some girls can play through it, some can’t.’ So it just depends on the players.” Every coach has a different philosophy. The best coaches can build a championship caliber team using strategy. One strategy is to have an all-around team. This means that a team plays both offense and defense by rebounding,

passing, shooting, stealing the ball, and blocking shots. Another strategy is to have one good player who can score up close and several shooters who can make shots from outside

the three. Other strategies include playing fast, driving in close, and playing good defense. Tristen Licón a basketball player for the Sul Ross Lobos believes players don’t have to be good scorers to be good at basketball. “When my shots aren’t falling, I really try to create for my teammates just be positive,” said Licón. “There’s some games that they just don’t go in and I try to do other things to help my team win. Whether it’s making a pass…I mean eventually a shot might fall, but just playing good defense, doing the little things, rebounding,
8
blocking out, trying to get steals.” What makes most teams good is their ability to work as a team, always look for the open man. Make strong passes so the ball doesn’t get stolen. Players should always be willing to make an extra pass. “To have a good team you have to have a good coaching philosophy that we are all going to be in this together, we’re going to win together, we’re going to lose together,” Clark said. “So if you get people to buy into that then, your coaching and your playing style for your team - you should go pretty far.” Relying on defense is risky because if a team has a great defense but no offense, then their opponent will slowly start to win. It’s all about finding a balance between offense
9
and defense. All these strategies are great, but they need adaptive players in order to work. “You can affect the games in many ways without scoring,” Licón said. “I’ve learned that and some coaches will see that. Some guys average four points and do 9 rebounds or so and do the little things to help their team win.” The fourth position in basketball is the power forward. The power forward has to be big and be able to make shots up close. This position is disappearing from basketball. The way the game is played now it is called the era of positionless basketball and the power forward will be the first to disappear. The fifth and final position is the center. The center is the tallest person on the team. They
need to be able to guard close to the basket and shoot close to the basket.
Referees don’t make rules they only make sure players follow them. referees have to pay close attention to games. Depending on the players some referees may
call some games differently than others. “We actually allow them to dictate how we call,” Guillory said. “But we try to be consistent throughout the start to the end because if we’re inconsistent then the players are confused. Let’s say I don’t call something early on and I decide I’m going to call it later on, the players are like: you didn’t call that earlier why are you calling it now? I think consistency is important but allowing the players and seeing their ability to play through plays will determine how we call” Referees do sometimes have to deal with players who strongly disagree with their calls. When this happens, referees have to take
action. “To me it is an easy situation to correct,” said Peter Contreras, long time NCAA referee. “I have a couple steps that I think work well for me, I talk to the player in a very professional way, although I think they may be disparaging to me, but I bring it down to a conversation much like you and I are having. If we can have that kind of conversation we’ve got a chance to figure this thing out and I suddenly remind them of each of our roles and we’re certainly approachable so if you’ve got a question please come ask it in an appropriate time and in an appropriate manner.” Referees have no problem answering questions for players. The player just needs to ask respectfully and at the right time. In the middle of
a play is not the right time. The right time is usually during a timeout or a break. “If they still have not taken that corrective measure, we can work through the captain,” Contreras said. “If you’ve already established a trust value with the captain that’s been designated at the beginning of the game then you can also certainly work through the coach. You can make the coach aware of what is going on as well and even as a last resort if you’re not getting help from the player or the player’s teammates or the coaches, then we’ve got some corrective measures by the rule book and we can take care of that.”

City Skaters The Skateboarding Scene in Austin
A
city is defined by the people behind it. In Austin, there is a large amount of diversity. When driving around Austin, a skateboarder is more than likely to be upon someone’s sight. Skateboarding has its own community in Austin, Like the other cities with large skate communities, Austin has the things needed to support a skate community, which are skate parks, local skate shops, and many good skate spots. What puts Austin above the other cities is that it has those things, plus plenty of large

By Josue Jaimes hills and good roads. “It’s lit,” said Robert, a 25-year-old Austin skateboarder. ”This is the scene, this is literally the scene, there’s a bunch of grass root companies like, Purple Wax, Birch, and Security, the board I’m riding.” These companies were founded and based in Austin. Purple Wax being a skate wax company. Skate wax is used to reduce friction on ledges, rails, and curbs to perform grinds. Birch and Security both are companies that produce skateboard decks. Some skateboarding events also
happen in Austin. “Death matches happen out here, you’re just in the scene,” Robert said. Death matches are an annual event in which Thrasher Magazine holds skateboarding competitions and a music festival. In 2019 the death match was held in Austin. “It’s one of the better cities, with all the ditches and a really good skate park and also it’s a good skate community, the people are cool,” said Elias Bingham, owner of NoComply skateshop. NoComply skateshop is an Austin local skate shop.
It is located next to the House Park skatepark. House Park is the most visited skatepark in Austin. “I just thought it was the craziest thing ever,” Robert said he what thought about skateboarding before he started skating. “I just
thought it was really cool, it was really aggressive I thought it looked fun. The adrenaline, for sure. It’s cause it’s just scary. You can just throw your board down, hit a pebble and fall. So nothing is guaranteed, no matter how good you are, you can eat the
concrete out here.” Explaining that the unpredictability aspect is what kept him doing it for so long. In skateboarding, there isn’t always a way of knowing what is going to happen. A trick is attempted, if it is failed the trick is tried again,
and again until it is finally succeeded or the skater has given up.They work for the satisfaction of landing the trick. Sometimes they are willing to sacrifice their own physical health to try to achieve this satisfaction. “My advice you just gotta really skate,

“You need to feed off of other people’s energy.” -Robert, 25-year-old Austin skaterboarder
you gotta really immerse yourself in it, and you gotta want it, really, if you just wanna be cool, it’s just not gonna work,” Robert said. “Just stick with it because it’s hard for everybody and as soon as you start figuring it out it’s always fun because it’s always hard, it’s always a challenge,” said Bingham “Just practice, just keep on trying the same thing over and over again.” Skateboarding will always be hard, there will always be new challenges. The only way to get better is to keep going and not stop. “I would say then you need to surround yourself with people that are better than you, or that are around your skill level,” said Robert . “You need to feed off of other people’s energy.” In skateboarding surrounding yourself with people who are better than you can cause an increase in motivation. The better you get, the more fun it gets. “That what’s good about skating,” Bingham said. “It’s always a challenge, so however good you are, you’re trying something harder, so it’s the same challenge, it’s a way to persevere over challenges,” said Bingham. The great amount of excitement is what keeps them going. “It’s really good, everyone’s pretty chill no one is really cliquey also the town itself is nice to skate there’s always new stuff being built, there is always something new to find,” said Rob Homeyak a No-Comply employee. In a lot of the major skating cities, skaters
might turn out to be cliquey, meaning they tend to not be very welcoming to newcomers or outsiders. Although in Austin, that is different. “Austin is really chill,” Robert said. “It’s still cliquey, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not like LA and California, where its super cliquey... people are real approachable as long as you’re not an idiot, you can get along with people.”

play according to Bleacher report, and it requires a lot of practice, dedication and focus. For people who have played football their interest usually started as a little kid watching games with family and proceeding to a huge love for it.
ootball is an amazing sport, gathering around with family and friends to see your favorite team score or see the amazing catches they do. Getting happy everytime they do a touchdown or gain more yardage, watching a football game gives different emotions especially Football players go through if there are people that go for the so many difficulties. They have to opposite team with you. learn to get better by the time, and they have to be really careful Football a sport everyone knows when passing the ball to avoid either we like it or not. It is one getting hit or tackled and get a of the top 10 hardest sports to concussion. There are a lot of
19
high school players who want to continue and hopefully get drafted by their favorite NFL team. “The most beneficial advantage is that football keeps you fit and teaches you to concentrate on one objective as a group, said James Miller football player at Eastwood Academy High Schools. As many advantages as there are, there are also disadvantages of playing. Playing football can end up in an injury, the most common is a knee injury. Breaking
a bone is not the only thing that can happen while playing, you can also get a concussion. In a year approximately 67,000 high school football players are diagnosed with concussions. At least 50 high school football players or younger from 20 different states have died or sustained serious head injuries on the field since 1997, according to the New York Times. Getting a concussion increases the risk of mental illnesses like dementia and chronic traumatic encephalopathy. Football players have to practice at least 90 minutes in the morning
then practice two hours in the afternoon, professional players or college levels have to go through a summer of hard work to get better when football season comes. They deal with the coach screaming at them, pushing them beyond their limits to be the best player they can be. We are not all the same, meaning that we don’t all do the same things to prepare for a tough night like a game night. There are many ways to prepare for that day “I like listening to angry music,’’ said Cade Barlow football player at Austin
High. Doing some catches with friends, telling yourself positive things about what will happen and many other ways. Those ideas help them not only prepare physically but mentally too, helping your mind put a better you on the field Football is a very hard sport to play. Besides all the physical difficulties there are also the ones that help you prepare and have to overcome and learn that it is just part of that game you have to go through in order to be a good player.
“Playing football may be hard but at the end you learn that there is always a better you” - Noah William, football player
20
“Biggest difficulty is having your coaches, yelling at you,” said Barlow, “is like you have to kinda be tough about it, you know they are gonna expect of you things that you previously didn’t think you could do and it’s a hard transition learning how to handle all of that and then also your teammates push you too so you just got to try to stay ahead of everyone pushing you.”
21
Playing this pushes you beyond your limits to do your best in the field while having your teammates and coach tell you that you can do things you never expected from yourself and never thought you could do but it will all help you be a better player. “Yeah it’s a great sport that more people should play and well it’s not only play it is learning new things and having new people to talk to,” said
Noah Williams football player at Lamar High School. Football gets you stronger physically and mentally, it also teaches you a lot about facing adversity and teamwork. You get to work with many different people and you get to know them more, make new friends. “I think in a good way its pushed me to like be able to compete and carries over my grades but I think i’m a little dumber because of all the concussions but i feels like it comes out positive because I learned many things, said Barlow.
