If you like talking all of the time, then Denali (Dribble) Kervella is your gal. Denali is sweet, peppy, and sarcastic. She enjoys obssessing over her hair (it always looks good) and gum snapping. When Denali is not jamming to “Baby got Back” she is a First Lady, and is secretly a mermaid; at least she swims like one. You might find her saying “cute” quite frequently and “gimme the deets.”

Ari (Ace) Ari (Ace)

Our only real complaint about Ari (Ace) Rogers is that she makes it EXTREMELY difficult to make fun of her. Ari Rogers enjoys being annoyingly perfect, gorgeous, and athletic. You will often find Ari saying “Mamma Mia!” When Ari is not busy chatting about the wonders of different varieties of pasta, she plays volleyball for the LBJ Jaguars, as well as kicking some booty as a softball player.

Caitri (Catch)

If you have ever heard of Oscar the Grouch, then you pretty much know Caitri (Catch) Feddeler. Caitri enjoys the smell of trash, and yelling at innocent bystanders. You don’t want to cross her path. But beneath her furry green exterior, Caitri is really just a sweet, helpful kid with a passion for soccer and chicken. When Caitri makes ventures out of her trashcan she plays the sweeper for the Austin United Capitals, soccer team.

Kason (Kick )

Kason (Kick) Tey is the gum supplier, soccer fanatic, and the token male member of our group. Kason enjoys complicated water bottles, Sports Illustrated, and making fun of girly conversations. When Kason isn’t busy arguing with Denali why figure skating isn’t a sport, he enjoys being the best (and only) Asian on the track team, and owing at defense for the FORZA FC soccer team.

GOAL!!! W

hile other kids were inside watching TV or at the mall hanging out with their friends, Dennis Bryan was outside in his back yard with a soccer ball. Dennis would spend countless hours of his weekend outside with the ball close by, taking only short breaks to finish his homework. He had limited supplies at his advantage in his small backyard with weeds poking through the grass and pots of flowers covering the small porch. Dennis Bryan was very active in sports through high school and into high school, starting at a young age his dream to become a professional soccer player. Dennis now works to help other athletes to become better by coaching. Dennis went to college at the Incarnate Word and was the assistant coach for tree years. He has been a select soccer coach now for 9 years and has coached at three different clubs, currently at Austin United Capitals Soccer Club. Coaching has had a major impact on his life and he wants to make others realize their goals athletically and academically. Dennis tries to push his

players to their potential so that they can accomplish their goals. “I wasn’t pushed to the extreme and that’s why I want [my players] to give the best everyday,” Dennis said. Dennis’s main focus was soccer but he also competed in other sports including football, cross-country, track, and baseball in high school. This activity in other sports helped Dennis stay active and be a stronger athlete. Dennis worked constantly to achieve his goals, through out high school, even when he wasn’t likely to succeed. He didn’t have the advantages of living in a large city or being able to play with a major club. Regardless, he had success in high school but it was still a long shot for him to become a professional player. Dennis’s brother went to the same high school and graduated with many opportunities to play soccer for college, but still managed to come to all of Dennis’s high school games. When Dennis’s brother’s career took a turn and he was no longer able to play soccer for the college team he still encouraged Dennis to do his best. “[My brother] was my biggest cheerleader,” Dennis said. “He taught me that even though it didn’t work out for him, he still wanted me to strive to be the best.”

MINNESOTA THUNDER Dennis played with the Minnesota Thunder professional team for 3 years. While Dennis felt he had the means to succeed in professional soccer, others weren’t so optimistic. Dennis came from a small community without many connections in the soccer world, which many people felt would limit his options in playing soccer. He still wished to play professional soccer, so he would have to overcome these obstacles. “They told me I’d never be able to do it ‘he’s too small,’ people didn’t give me a chance and I took that as a challenge and that made me strive to be the best,” Dennis said. Dennis continued to practice and play soccer at any chance could. After all the work he had put into soccer he was able to attend the US soccer festival. This festival was a tournament of regional players who all have the same purpose and desire to be the best. Dennis played against the under 17 and under 18 years of

age national teams in front of the US national coach showing the skills he had practiced for hours on end. “Playing against the U17 and U18 national teams was a great honor,” Dennis said. “You get to show what you can do to the best coaches and get to prove yourself.” When Dennis first started his carreer he had to realize that everyone he is competing against wants it as much as he does so he would have to try harder. COACHING Dennis now coaches select girls soccer at the Austin United Capitals Soccer Club. working hard. He learned that this was for real and he had to push past everyone else. “Every body is there for a reason,” Dennis said. “I wanted to be the best every day, not just comfortable. In my first game I scored the game winning goal and that gave me confidence that I could play at this level.” Dennis had finally landed a spot in a trial in Germany to play in a higher division professional team. This was his big break and he spent months in preparation for the trip. Before he left for Germany he was playing in a game when he changed direction really fast and his left knee blew out. “How quickly things can change, blowing my left knee out,” Dennis said. “[I was] never the same player afterwards.” One week after his injury, Dennis’s mom passed away. The game in which he blew out his knee and lost

his chance to go to Germany for the trial, was also the final game his mother ever saw him play. “That was the biggest blow knowing I would never be able to play at that level in front of my mom again,” Dennis said. After Dennis went through surgery on his left knee he continued to play soccer. Even though he had lost his chance to go to Germany he still pursued a professional career. Dennis played at the Minnesota Thunder and later at Dallas Burn, now known as Dallas FC. Dennis started the majority of the games and was the team captain on Dallas Burn his last 3 years. Audiences would come from across the nation to the games and would have 2,000-4,000 people at each game. “I took pride in playing on the field,” Dennis said. “It made me humble and cherish the moments I had because I knew it wouldn’t last forever.” At the end of the games people would line up to get the autographs of the players. There would be posters surrounding the walls showing the players faces. People would know their names and look up to the players as role models. Dennis Bryan took part in training camps to help younger athletes. “It was an honor and [I] walked away from there proud of myself,” Dennis said. “The kids look up to

you and are thinking ‘Wow I just met a professional soccer player.’” Dennis wished to inspire the kids who watched him play so that they could make every effort to be the best. To make an impact in kid’s lives he tries to relate to the kids and create an environment in which they can strive. As a coach Dennis will joke around to keep the mood light while still getting the drills done effectively. Dennis also wanted to be a teacher because the most influential people in his life were his teachers. “The people who made the biggest impact in my life were my teachers,” Dennis said. “Its important to give back to people.” Dennis wanted to be a Special ED. teacher to help other people. Dennis tries to teach his teams that helping others is an important aspect of life to learn. “I want [my] teams to be involved in the Special Olympics,” Dennis said. “I want to be in an environment to make an impact in other kids lives.” Dennis works with his players to accomplish goals that are not only for soccer. He tries to help his players learn important lessons about life through his coaching, like how to work towards a certain objective. As the players develop skills they learn how to set goals and appreciate the opportunities that they are given. Dennis believes that it is important to appreciate those who have an affect in your life and work to help you. “You have to learn to appreciate the people who help you in your life,” Dennis said. “Respect out of my players is all I ask for.” Dennis wants the people he coaches to be respectful to others and to appreciate what they are given. Dennis stresses that his athletes take advantage of the opportunities they have because not everyone is as lucky. Even though Dennis wants his players to succeed he wants them to be happy and enjoy what they do. “You should enjoy things because you want to do it not because you have to,” Dennis said. Wearing his Austin United Capital T-shirt, Dennis Bryan lines up the cones as he is preparing for the next activity his team will work on. He thinks back to the days when he was playing and working to be a professional player. Then, Dennis remembers that you are always a student of the game and everyday is a new experience to improve.

Kobe or LeBron? It is the argument of the decade in the NBA, so who is better? Bryant or James? by KASON T.

I

t’s the most publicized match up in basketball, LeBron vs. Kobe. You see them everywhere. They are on magazines, TV ads, websites galore, and they are consistently the special on Sportscenter. In just the past year Nike started their puppet ads, which shows Kobe and LeBron. Nike started the ads in hope of a LeBron-Kobe face off in the championship. In the ads, the two puppets would argue about who is better. Kobe would show off his rings, then LeBron would show how much more athletic he was than

Kobe. They are each the franchise of their teams, Kobe Bryant and his Los Angeles Lakers while LeBron James has his Cleveland Cavaliers. Every time they play each other the game is hyped for weeks, and when it comes to be game time millions tune in. It is the ultimate debate; who is better Kobe or LeBron. The Black Mamba or the Chosen One. The Dagger or King James. First, let’s look at their age, LeBron is only 25 years old, and Kobe is already 31. LeBron is still young and has room to grow and develop, while Kobe has already past his peak. LeBron has a bright future ahead of him; his potential is great. Both of them went to the NBA straight from high school and both were great successes. Kobe was drafted 13th overall in 1996 by the Charlotte Bobcats, and LeBron was drafted 1st overall by Cleveland in 2003. By looking at the draft you can see that James was drafted higher than Bryant, which shows how much more pure talent James has. So when you compare Kobe and LeBron you have to take their age into consideration. Kobe has been in the league for 14 years, while LeBron is only on his 7th year. Kobe Bryant has more experience, and is considered as a veteran.

13 Beast

GAME TIME LeBron and Kobe face off in their big match up. The game is always intense.

Beast 14

Since Kobe has more experience it is certainly not fair to compare LeBron and Kobe at different times of their careers. LeBron is barely stepping into his prime of his career, while Kobe is nearing the end of his prime. So the only real way to compare Kobe and LeBron is to compare them while they were at the same age. So first let’s look at their rookie seasons. Kobe played limited minutes in his rookie season and averaged only 15 minutes a game. He was mostly just a backup. But when the game was on the line and his team was facing elimination in the playoffs Kobe had three chances to keep his team in the game, or even to win it. All three of those attempted shots were air balls, which means he didn’t hit the net, the rim, or even the backboard, all he got was air. Now let’s take a look at LeBron’s first NBA season; LeBron was a starter for the Cavaliers. He later became the youngest person to win rookie of the year, and became one of only three NBA players to average at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists per game, all in his first season. So LeBron was a better rookie than Kobe. Now if we look at the stats from when Kobe was also 25 years old like LeBron is now, there is no comparison. The

stats are from the age of 25 years and 22 days to be exact. LeBron is better in points with 27.7, while Kobe only averaged 21.5 points a game. LeBron’s stats also show that he is clearly superior in rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked

Kobe had 10 games over 50 points. All of these games don’t show that Kobe is better, what is shows is that Kobe is a much more self centered guy, he’s more focused on making points himself rather than being a team player. LeBron is clearly more of a team player than Kobe. ESPN’s analyst Chris Sheridan said it best, “James is the better player in terms of getting his teammates involved and making everyone around him a better player. Kobe is more of a one-man, I-am-the-show type of player.” LeBron thinks about his teammates while Kobe just thinks about himself. LeBron still has better stats to help out his team, but shots. Also many may say that Kobe he doesn’t go overboard like Kobe has a better shot than LeBron, but if can continuously. Last but not least you look at their three point percentwe have to look at their head to head ages they are the exact same at 33.2. games, and of the 13 times that they But now there is one stat that Kobe have faced each other LeBron has absolutely controls, and that is in the won a resounding eight. number of games where either Kobe or Many others also say that Kobe has LeBron have scored 50 or more points. a killer instinct, which is true. leven girls jog onto the softball field. They warm up in turf that is made up of more weeds than actual grass. Behind the bases, the sand is spotted with stray dandelions and clover. The dugouts are made from cinderblocks and bent fencing. Trash normally lines the outfield fence, but as the girls take their three warm-up laps, they pick up the garbage people carelessly leave behind. And yet, on the same campus, there is a baseball field that looks like one out of a poster. Fresh, springy grass ends exactly where the manicured sand begins. A few years ago it wasn’t like this. The baseball coach, under his own budget, had to fix up the field. LBJ athletes and coaches agree that the budget needs reform, but when it comes to how it should be changed, the opinions differ. “I don’t think that the budget is spread evenly around the sports,” LASA junior Autumn Kervella says. Some smaller sports like softball, volleyball, or soccer don’t get as much money as some of the more ‘popular’ sports like football.

Beast 1 8

“Football and basketball, they get a lot of money from AISD because you pay to get into games, but I don’t think that you can totally disregard most of the smaller sports,” Autumn comments. Autumn competes in smaller sports like track and crosscountry. She knows first hand the struggles many LBJ athletes experience because of the need for more funding. For the past two years, the track team has traveled to Houston to compete in the Texas Southern Relays. The team first ran into problems when looking for a means of transportation for the 3-4 hour drive. “[The District] won’t let you take a regular yellow school bus if you’re going a certain amount of miles out [of Austin],” she explains. They didn’t have enough money to rent vans that would take everyone on the team. The coaches paid for their hotel rooms, out of their own pockets, and the team members had to pay for their food and van fees. “It’s put a lot of strain on stuff… [And] put stress on the coach and the team in general.” Not only has strain been put on the athletes because of this issue, coaches are becoming stressed as well. Marcella Brown coaches wrestling, volleyball and softball, and has to deal with the hassle of supporting the needs of the team, when not given enough funding or

Their funds stretched enough to enable them to purchase letter jackets, hold an end of season banquet and provide awards for the players. “This totaled thousands of dollars, outside of what the district provides each team,” Brown comments. Although Brown is able to balance her time spent fundraising and her time coaching, not all coaches can afford to spend the majority of their time fundraising, without negatively affecting the team. “[Coaches sometimes] have to spend more time on fundraising than time on coaching. And that can hurt the team sometimes,” Autumn comments. More than once, her track coaches had to cancel practice so that they could talk to company managers about selling cookie dough to raise money. And while losing coaching time can make it more difficult for the team to be successful, Autumn doesn’t think it will completely destroy a team’s chances of being champions. Even if the district does not change the way sports budgets are dealt with, Autumn has hope that sports players will succeed and be able to accomplish their goals despite their challenges. Students going through America’s school systems have seen the decrease in P.E. requirements. For example, according to the State Physical Education Requirements, in Idaho high schools are not required to offer physical education. Does this help the students achieve their education goals or are the schools hurting the student’s performance? In school my method of coping with stress and schoolwork was to go outside and play soccer. American society is now making it possible to get through the day with the smallest amount of exertion possible. This is astounding when obesity is rising as a leading cause of preventable death with 7.3 million deaths in 2001, according to the Global Burden of Disease and Risk Factors. Physical activities help students stay out of trouble and perform better academically. The students participating in physical activity are busy and have other things on their mind than drugs. Also, it has been proven that physical activity raises a child’s self esteem and the child’s body and mind will lead to better learning skills. The students in physical activities are kept busy and out of trouble. America is starting to be one of the fattest nations in the world with 74.1% of citizens, 15 and over, are obese, according to a study don’t by the World Health Organization. So what are we doing to change this trend? We are taking any physical exertion out of everyday life and replacing it with videogames and all you can eat fast food. The Department of Health and Human Services, conducted a study showing that physical activity reduces anxiety and depression making people at less risk from drugs. Also, children who take

dom. Socyberty has written articles stating that sports take away from academic learning and have no place in school. School sports, however, require the students to receive a minimum grade in order to continue playing the sport. This encourages students will have good grades, benefiting their overall academic performance. Sport participation also benefits the health of the body, allowing the brain to function better. Being active at a younger age, when the brain is still developing learning skills, helps the body learn new activities faster. In PE classes in the United States children are learning how to play new sports helping their body’s function. When a child first learns to skip the body will slowly progress and be able to complete the task. The body will learn these new skills faster as the brain develops when the body is required to do these tasks. This means that sports allow students to develop better brain and body health, benefiting their focusing ability and learning skills. Physical activity has been eliminated from Americans every day lives. This loss of physical activity is hurting more than just the physical body but the self-esteem and mental abilities of people. This action is harming students’ academics because physical activity has been shown to help performance of students in their academic studies. Americans need to realize that physical activity is a necessity in our lives. To change the trend of America’s education and physical health, PE should be reintroduced into schools and encourage more youth participation in sports.

US stays silent during World Cup As the World Cup approaches many in the US are unaware. by KASON T.

undreds of thousands of people all packed into one stadium. It’s complete madness, everyone is screaming at once in all kinds of languages. You may not know what they are saying, but you do know exactly whom they are rooting for, because they are clothed in their country’s flag. It’s an event that only comes once every four years, and everyone is restless until the next one comes. It’s the world’s greatest event, the World Cup. together; everyone is rooting for his or her country to win the game. The World Cup is the most important thing to those countries, but for the US it is simply just another sports event. It’s just another one of those foreign sporting events that happen somewhere else, even though the US is very much involved. As the World Cup approaches, starting on June 11 of this year South Africa will be buzzing. “[The World Cup] is going to be people who represent their country, and love their sport, and the country that they are playing for,” said Aiden Kahn, a US fan going to the World Cup in June of this year. Many players will play their hearts out for their country in the World Cup, and as they play many fans will be there supporting them. South Africa will have the most support being the host country, while not much is expected from the US’ fan base. “The South Africans have this instrument that they bring to games, kind of a tuneless plastic trumpet called a vuvuzela, it kinda gives the stadium a sort of vibe that’s unique to Africa,” said Aiden. The vuvuzela was introduced during the Confederations Cup and almost every fan had one. The buzzing noise filled the stadium, and it was so loud many players on the field complained about being able to

hear each other on the field. Many wanted the vuvuzela banned from the coming World Cup, but FIFA has made the decision to keep the vuvuzela, because it is the heart and soul of the South Africans. As the excitement gets here many are also looking for tickets to see the game. “We signed up for tickets and sent it in to the ticket distributing organization in South Africa. My dad’s sister lives in South Africa and her boyfriend was trying to get us tickets from the bank, and it ended up not working out so we were scared that we might not get them, cause they were in such high demand,” Aiden explained. Getting tickets to the World Cup is an extremely stressful and tension filled experience, this is the case for almost every World Cup. All of the games are usually sold out, and even finding tickets in advance is a tough job.

so much passion for the games, especially when their host country is playing. This is the case for every World Cup, except in 1994 when the US hosted the World Cup. “It was very easy to get tickets,” said Tiong Tey, a soccer fan who went to the World Cup in 1994. Mr. Tey had a very easy time finding tickets for the World Cup in 1994; he just simply had to order them online ahead of time. But for the World Cup this coming summer in South Africa it is very tough to find tickets even months before as Aiden described. The US as a nation does not care very much about the World Cup. During World Cup qualifying the US played 13 in America

27 Beast

“One day I was coming upstairs after dinner and my brother said, ‘Hey guess what we got tickets.’ And it turns out that we got tickets to all the games we applied to which was about seven or eight, and it was just really relieving,” said Aiden. For every World Cup tickets are hard to find because fans have

where only three of them had about 50,000 people showed up. When Mexico played their games in the US the crowds were huge. They had ten games with at least 51,000 people; they also had crowds of 90,526 against New Zealand in Pasadena, and 77,507 in New Jersey against Ecuador. Even when games for Mexico are in the US way more people show up rather then when the US plays. Now for decades many have tried to make soccer popular in the US, but it has not been successful. Big stars like Pelé and David Beckham have come over to the US, both

group, and from there they need to take every game as it comes… I think if you asked every guy on the team, their goal is to win the World Cup. Whether that’s realistic or not, if they don’t think like that then they have no chance to win.” This is the confidence that is needed for the US players in the World Cup. If the US goes and does a good job in the World Cup many people will start to pick it up and watch. People in the US will have interest just like they did when the US beat Spain, but the US still needs to find a way to maintain that interest. “There are more and more younger generations playing soccer than ever be-

ood showing in the World Cup tention, but after both him and Pelé got to US the interest dissolved quickly. Professional soccer in the US has never been a big hit. New things must happen for the US to gain more interest. “What needs to happen for the US to have more soccer fans, is that the US needs to have a good showing in the World Cup,” said Aiden, “If the US starts playing consistently more often and going far in world tournaments everyone’s going to be way more interested.” In June of 2009 the US was set to play Spain in the Confederations Cup semifinal. Spain was ranked

number one in the world, and had a 35 game unbeaten streak. US went on to beat Spain 2-0, for the upset of the year. Everyone was soccer crazy news and media coverage was up, and everyone was talking about how good US soccer was. Then later that year in August the US played rival Mexico for World Cup Qualifying, the US lost 1-2. Coverage went down and everyone then forgot about soccer. Former US player Mike Burns also had this to say, “I think the starting point has to be for the U.S. to advance out of the

fore in US,” said Mr. Tey. Youth soccer in America has always been a growing theme, and if the trend keeps going the future for soccer looks bright. As the World Cup in South Africa comes, more Americans should have more interest in how the US fares in the World Cup. For the World Cup this year ESPN bought rights to all of the games, and will televise every single one. This has never happened before, and TV ratings are expected to go up. As the World Cup approaches, many wait intently, but the US is almost unaware.

Athelete’s Behaving Badly

D

rug use, violence, and sex have become the norm in celebrities lives, it’s hard to turn on the television without being blasted with the story of some trashy celebrities downfall. People have accepted the fact that musicians and celebrities have loose lifestyles, but are unclear about the expectations we should have for our nations athletes. Every year more and more of our sports figures are being exposed in shocking scandals, and there seems to be no standard for what an athlete is allowed to do. Athletes need to be held to a higher standard, they should strive to be a to role model and let their actions strengthen our belief in their heroism. The first reason an athlete should have a respectable lifestyle is that it is in their best interest for their career. Athletes who have been exposed in illegal or ethically wrong can lose millions of dollars in endorsement deals and possibly their job. The New York Times’ article “Insuring Endorsements against Athlete Scandals” says that insurance companies are now looking for a way to have liability insurance against athletes who have improper behavior, so that if an athlete that endorses their product they can immediately drop them from by DENALI K. their ads, and hold the athlete responsible for damages. Companies should have the right to liability insurance, an athlete who has endorses a company is paid millions RAY LEWIS of dollars to project a certain image, and On the left is Ray if they choose to act irresponsibly they are Lewis while playing tarnishing that image. Take Tiger Woods, a Ravens Game. he was the number one grossing athlete On the right is of 2009, making 92 million dollars from Lewis’ mugshot endorsements annually. When Woods after being arrested was exposed of potentially having sexual on charges for encounters with over fifteen women, although he was married and had two chilmanslughter.

Athletes influence are becoming increasingly more important in our lives, yet Americans do not have a firm standard on what we should expect from them.

dren, he lost million-dollar endorsement deals with Gillette, Accenture, and Tag Hauer. Accentures website released statements saying that he simply did not fit the standards they had for their company. An athlete who lives irresponsibly lets down the people who look up to him. The reason sports as a whole exist is because of fans, they are the ones who buy the tickets, sports paraphernalia, and essentially support the team. Part of an athletes job is to keep fans supportive of the team. Many people believe that it is an athlete or public figures right to have a private life, and they should not be held accountable for their actions outside of a game. These people are wrong, although the media does not need to know every detail of a sports figures private life, there are actions that are illegal and ethically wrong that can not be excused for anyone, let alone a public figure who is known as a role model. An athlete who is caught in a public scandal loses credibility, and their athletic talents may be overlooked. Ray Lewis was the star linebacker for the Baltimore Ravens when he was suspected to be guilty of a double homicide stabbing. Lewis was put on trial, but was never convicted due to lack of conclusive evidence, but was fined 250,000 dollars. Although he was found innocent and the Baltimore Ravens Art Model owner firmly stood behind him; Lewis lost all of his sponsorship ads almost instantly, and was suspended from playing in the NFL. Lewis’ murder trial received the most media attention of his career and our first thought of Lewis is of a potential murderer, not that he was the first linebacker ever to receive an MVP award on a Super-Bowl winning team. If sports figures want to be remembered for their greatness, and not their mistakes they should guard their actions and act wisely. It is so important that our troubled world has someone to look up to, I believe that it is athletes duty to provide this. It is not only in a sports figures best interest to do the right thing, butit is in the interest of the people who support them, and their values.

Baseball in the Olympics? Baseball: It’s America’s pastime. And yet it is not in the most elite worldwide competition: The Olympic Games. by ARI R.

I

t’s obvious people like baseball. 37% percent of Americans ages 12 or older have attended a major league game in the past year. In 2003, 67,630,052 people attended 2,430 games with an average of 27,831 people per game, according to baseballfever.com. So, it’s logical that one might think that a sport as popular as baseball would be in an elite competition, like the Olympics. It’s popular worldwide, it’s relatively inexpensive compared to other sports that are in the Olympics, and the athletes who compete are incredibly fit, not to mention good looking. Now, it is understandable why some people might not want another team sport in the Olympics; you have to scout for players, coaches must be found, a suitable uniform must be designed and fitted to all the players you found, not to mention all the money needed to supply an entire team with equipment. But there are other team sports in the Olympics like volleyball, soccer and basketball that spend just as much time and resources getting their teams ready. Why can’t baseball be included in this list? Don’t get me wrong, I am not advocating the removal of other team sports, but would

Beast 36

this problem not apply to these sports as well? Baseball is a universal sport; countries from all over the world participate in it. According to internationalbaseball.net, over 100 countries play baseball, and according to worldatlas. com there are between 189-195 countries in the world; over half the countries in the world play baseball. International players compose a surprisingly significant portion of our Major League teams. According to the Baseball Almanac, in 2006 there were 399 foreign born players, close to 30% of the players total. The Dominican Republic had the most players, followed by Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Canada, Cuba and Japan. Of these countries Canada and Japan are the most represented at the Olympic Games. In other words, Canada and Japan are known to compete in many different Olympic events. Venezuela, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the Dominican Republic, most of all, are not big contenders at the Olympics and should be given a chance to excel at the sport they love. Besides a love of baseball, it seems the one commonality between these countries is poverty. By not having baseball in the Olympics, we are essentially stopping countries that are financially handicapped from competing. Their financial situation should not limit their athletes chance to compete. The Olympics are not a priority for governments of poorer countries. They need advocates to lobby for their participation in the Olympic Games. Baseball is not an elite sport; you don’t have to have a lot of money to play baseball. I did some research at Academy.com, and I looked through all of the baseball gear they had avail-

37 Beast

able. I added up the cost of the cheapest equipment they had and the total was $87.85. Compared to other popular Olympic sports like , whose total equipment cost added up to $204.43, baseball is over $100 cheaper to play. Baseball requires the players to be more physically fit, to be able to run very quickly at times and having the endurance to run the whole game, have faster reflexes, and better hand-eye coordination. According to fitness-facts.com, on a scale of one to five, one being least amount of fitness and five being the most, the physical requirements for baseball are Cardiorespiratory 1, Flexibility 1, Muscular Strength 1, Muscular Endurance 1, and Coordination/Skill 4. Compared to other Olympic sports, like pingpong, well, baseball is a beast. Ping-pong only requires Flexibility 1, and Coordination/Skill 3; all the other requirements, like muscular endurance, are 0. It seems like one of the main reasons baseball was taken out of the Olympics, although not spoken of, was because America was no match against South American teams. Introduced to the Olympics in 1992, America won only one gold medal throughout baseball’s 5 Olympic Games career. Looking at this issue from a patriotic view, and we all know how important it is to be patriotic these days, putting baseball back into the Olympics would give America a chance to redeem itself, and seriously kick butt. On the other hand, looking at this issue from an international view, we are a part of a global society after all, countries who whooped America before should be given the chance to do it again. On the mutant third hand, reinstating baseball in the Olympics is just the right thing to do.
