HOMECOMING Do’s and Don’ts by:

T

Daniel Rubio

ired of making yourself look like an outsider at homcoming because you’re always using bad etiquette? Here you’ll learn the do’s and don’ts in etiquette. What is etiquette you ask? It is the manners or acts that you play when at an important or formal gathering, such as homecoming. Etiquette is rather important and one of the most useful things in life because people use this wherever they go. This will usually used for a first impression and as you may know first impression is what people most remember you by. Do: DRESS UP

Homecoming isn’t as formal as prom but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear something elegant. Homecoming is an occasion worth dressing for. However make sure you feel comfortable because it could be a long night. Don’t forget that its not all about the clothes but also having fun. Don’t be too picky because this can waste a lot of your time and can cause frustration. Photo by: Careyjamesbalboa

Don’t: Do not do everything LAST MINUTE!

The chances that you won’t be able to find the dream clothes for your perfect night. Another thing about doing everything last minute is that you won’t have enough time to look for your clothes. Doing everything last minute also makes you stressed since you have to worry about five other things that you have to prepare for the night.

Do: Prepare for rain

Photo by: usename Nemo at Pixabay.com

Don’t forget that it could rain so always prepare for the worst. Don’t forget that you may need appropriate footwear for this. You never know when the weather calls for rain so make sure you have the appropriate items just in case the worse happens. Do: Make sure to have an umbrella just in case rain comes down. Don’t: Do not forget to look at the forecast of the entire week. Photo by: Tomás Castelazo

Don’t: Wear another school’s colors

The worst thing you can do. Supporting another team other than yours is something that would be considered rude. Wearing another school’s colors also shows betrayal to your own school. If you think about it, you want to wear your school’s colors because you want to show respect to the school that you attend. Wearing another school’s colors, this shows that you have more respect to their school rather than yours. Do: Wear your school’s colors. Having respect to your own school is good. You want to support your school for everything that everyone does.

11

Do: Remember your budget!

Remember that you’re only picking an outfit for just one night! Don’t break your budget trying to find the perfect suit. Spending all of your time on looking for the perfect suit will eventually lead to spend all your money, which is something that you do not want for yourself. Don’t: Advice when it comes to choosing your clothes, do not buy clothing that does not fit the cause, meaning you do not want to buy a Tshirt and jeans and think that it is the right look for you on Homecoming night. Dont: Look at only one site that belong to the store that you’re looking to buy clothes from. Looking online and finding one website or store won’t help you make a good call on what the store offers.

Do: Take a friend with you to the store.

Having somebody else with you can help you create good decisions about the clothes that you should buy. Just relying on your opinion is not going to cut it. The chances that you and your friend can help each other decide with clothes look right with each other and which clothes you should avoid.

Don’t: Make sure you know the time.

If you have a watch or a phone, keep an eye on the time since you want to make sure that you’re able to do all of the things that you put on your list. Not knowing the time can lead to chaos and stress. Knowing the time keeps you relaxed so in the end you’re able to go home from all of the shopping that you did during the day.

12

The average cost of homecoming progressively rises every year. After having to pay for the suit, tickets, and transportation to the dance, the price can add up pretty darn fast. After the shocking price of $20 for the tickets to get into the dance per student, not to mention food which can cost an extra $20 you can be looking up to $100 in exspenses. ressed to the nines, Donte Daniels strides confidently in his purple suit lined with silk blue linings that contrast evenly, and top-rate leather shoes. Donte is not participating in a business meeting on Wall Street or attending an elaborate dance, circa 1970. Donte wears his suits while strolling down the hallways of his high school, the Liberal Arts and Science Academy, and he does so proudly. At 18 years old, Donte has lived in Austin all his life. In the sixth grade, Donte started wearing suits for more than just special occasions, surprising not only his classmates, but his parents, too. Over the years, Donte has received many curious looks from others. “Donte has a fabulous sense of style and dresses for success. I can spot him easily out of a hallway crowd because he wears such bright colors, and I love it.” Ciara McDaniel, a freshman at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy, says. Donte’s “fabulous sense of style” for his age has echoed throughout the entire student body of Liberal Arts and Science Academy, and he sets an example for younger generations of what it means to dedicate yourself to your own beliefs.

otherwise had.“Dressing well, to me, is simply a ticket to earn someone’s attention...It does not signify richness or wealth, it does not signify character, it just opens ears, souls, and minds to hear what you have to say.” Donte likes to dress in a sophisticated style, and he has strong views about the colors of the clothes he wears. The top three colors he prefers to wear tell: turquoise, lime green, and yellow, tell people about his personality, lifestyle, and dreams in life. Turquoise, his favorite color, expresses his interests in aquatic biotechnology and marine life. After taking a biotechnology course at the Liberal Arts and Sciences Academy, Donte has discovered that he has a strong interest in the subject. He believes that using the power of biotechnology could produce financial aid for a lot of economic problems facing the U.S. and potentially help with the debt crisis. Donte’s second favorite color to wear lime green, gives a natural sense, not only from the perspective of nature, but also in the sense of originality. “Green represents natural luminescence, because it’s saying “I am who I am.” Donte’s third favorite color to wear, yellow, to Donte means

While the average student at a Texas high school walks through the halls wearing a t-shirt and a pair of shorts, Donte sees a bigger picture behind the clothes he wears. Donte believes that to become successful, you must dress for success. He feels that people watch constantly for exceptional people and that, “Whether you’re in elementary school, high school, or away from school, every minute someone is watching you. You might have a UT admissions officer watching you, you might have a Baylor admissions officer watching you.” The businessmen of today wear suits and ties to work and look professionally dressed each day. Donte’s philosophy entails dressing just as sharply as they do, because he participates in a school environment just as serious as the business world. “This is the work I want to pursue, so let me dress for that role, to show others! That is what I am about’,” Donte says. By making this statement, Donte feels he not only expresses his sense of fashion style, but that he also tells people what he values in life. While Donte appreciates the feeling of eyes following him down the halls--to him, dressing up is more than just a superficial show. When Donte dresses, he aims not only to impress people, but to get their attention and create potential positive situations that he wouldn’t have

“the color of presence.” Donte relates the color yellow to medical testing, stating, ”You add a substrate to [what you’re testing] to designate a certain color. Well in a lot of those tests, it will come out yellow...What it means is that the quality or object you are looking for is present.” With the combination of these three colors, Donte not only reflects his personal interests, but allows others to take in his character and persona before even talking to him. Donte wears beautiful suits, and he gets them at a good cost. Donte’s main sources for his suits are K&G Fashion Superstore and an online website called Nader Fashion. Donte visits other stores, but at K&G, he can usually walk in and find a silk suit for $350. In addition to walking in and finding a quality suit for a good price, K&G store clerks also give Donte coupons that he saves for his next big purchase. Nader Fashion on the other hand, an online site out of Las Vegas has a wide of variety of accessories like silk ties and shirts at affordable prices like $40, all delivered within three to five business days. When Donte goes shopping in these stores, he looks for Stacy Adams clothes because, “He has the most experience I know of.” For Donte, with experienced hands comes fine, quality goods. Donte’s philosophy of style has stemmed from two people who have greatly influenced his life. Donte credits his beginnings in fashion to his mother. “ My mom is a major influence on the way I dress. She taught me to press my clothes, how to match colors and to wear slacks every now and then. But I took her influence to an entirely new level.” This new level entails matching intricately designed ties with slacks and jackets, and making a whole suit work. Patrice Lumumba, the first legally elected prime minister of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also greatly influenced Donte’s fashion sense. According to Donte,

Patrice Lumumba’s philosophy states, “We have to effortlessly seek truth, because truth is what ultimately causes growth.” Donte took this philosophy and translated it into fashion; “...expressing truth in fashion that affects my style of clothing. I am being truthful with myself and others through my appearance, because I want to potentially become a businessman.” This truth is expressed through the styles and colors of his clothing. Each article of clothing Donte wears has a meaning behind it that he feels is conveyed to the people looking at him. With college just around the corner, Donte will soon part from the Liberal Arts and Science Academy to move on to the next level of his life. Leaving his own special footprint at LASA, Donte’s philosophy, coupled with hard work, will carry him to his goal of achieving a professional career in biotechnology and law. Each step of his path benefits from his compelling and professional dress style.

“I want people to have high expectations of me and what I will do in my life,” Donte finishes. We do, Donte, we do.

o you weep on the couch wishing you knew how to turn that piece of fabric in your hand into an elegant tie? Are you tired of crawling to your mother for help when dressing for an occasion? Want to stop relying on your girlfriend to dress you? Well, here is all that you need to solve those problems.

To find a cheap yet effective tie and other accessories (such as pocket squares) to practice on, try the following website and stores: SolidColorNeckties.com, GoodWill, or The Salvation Army. Ties can range from $5-10

“Don’t leave your suit naked!” says Brett McKay on www.artofmanliness. com. So to TIE this all in, check out their article, “How to Correctly and Easily Rock a Pocket Square”, on www.artofmanliness.com to “clothe your suit”! Step 1: Obtain a tie with which you will practice on. Start by placing the tie around your neck with the skinnier end in your dominant hand and with the wider side hanging twice as long as the skinnier. Photos by: Maggie Wong

Step 2: Take the wider end and cross it over then under the skinnier end about six inches away from your face. This forms a V-shape.

Step 3: Loop the wider end through the V and pull it all the way through. Make sure there is no slack. The V-shape is still present and the wide end ends behind it.

Step 4: Bring the wide end across the V-shape and pull it through the loop in between your face and the V. Pull tightly, make sure there is no slack.

Step 5: At the beginning of this step, the wide end starts behind the V. Pull it all the way to your non dominant hand side.

Step 6: Bring the wide side in front of the V and through the loop. Pull tightly This time pull the wide end towards your dominant hand and in front of the V.

Step 7: A layer is formed in front of the V. Bring the wide end up through the loop, tuck it between the V and the layer... voilĂ ! Adjust as necessary.

alking into the theater filled with the smell of buttered popcorn, Dexter and his two best friends, a couple dating each other, look forward to an evening filled with the action and fantastical adventure of the seventh Harry Potter movie. However, once the movie starts, Dexter can’t help but feel a sense of loneliness while his best friends grasp each other’s hands and giggle together in the dark of the theater. Throughout the movie, he begins thinking back to his own romantic life. Each time he tried to get close to a girl, for some reason, he always got the reply, “I don’t like you, but I respect you,” or “You’re too nice for me!” or even “Let’s just be friends.”

Many high school guys share the same position as Dexter. However, the notion that nice guys finish last, “might be a myth that we need to abandon,” says Ray Williams on Psychology Today. In the same way, not all girls gravitate towards the typical Fonzietype jerk. But women do find some traits attractive in both types of men. The nice guy’s attributes of honesty, kindness and respect towards girls form a more cooperative relationship while the leadership and confidence

22

of a “jerk” make men look more appealing to women. When a balance of these traits is achieved, all the girls cannot possibly resist crawling all over this hybrid “nice jerk.” “When you’re dating someone, you try to kind of include them in your life and if you don’t open up to them ... then it’s really hard to let them in and then you can’t really form a relationship because they won’t really know you or what’s going on,” says Nikita Prasad, a senior at the

Liberal Arts and Science Academy. Prasad’s current relationship has lasted for about two years, making her a “veteran” in areas concerned with dating in highschool. In Prasad’s opinion, honesty and openness compose of two traits that facilitate and contribute to the continuity of a relationship. “If you trust that person and if they’re honest with you, then it kind of all works out. Like if they go to a party and stuff, then you’ll know they won’t do something stupid. But if

you didn’t have that kind of trust, then you would be freaking out the entire time they were there,” Prasad says, “it just becomes really cumbersome for you. And it sucks the fun out of it.” Furthermore, Prasad is a selfproclaimed family person. “Family always comes first for me,” she says, “I would want someone to respect my family, as I would respect theirs.” Prasad’s experience in relationships highlights two characteristics of “nice guys”. The two attributes of honesty and respect for the other’s values, including family, facilitate a continuous relationship and define many stereotypical “nice guys”. However, when the guy start catering to the girl’s every need it becomes overwhelming. On the other hand, several girls scout out boldness and the ability to be outgoing in guys they consider dating. “They consider the circumstances, but if something seems fine, they just go for it. Like they don’t have this hesitancy,” Prasad says. Prasad, being an introvert herself, wants more of an extroverted personality. “It’s kind

of nice to be around people [who] put themselves out there, but not too much,” she says. The key phrase is “not too much.” Once the person starts overflowing with confidence and dips into the dark triad trait of narcissism, their attitude becomes unappealing because most girls weigh kindness and compassion over self-confidence. Now that those myths are cracked and crippled, how can single, average men capture the fancy of a damsel? Above all else, the level of maturity

“I would date someone younger than me if they had the same maturity as someone my age.” affects the outcome of the relationship. Out of a survey of 20 random LASA females, 19 chose maturity as a trait they seek in guys. “I would date someone younger than me if they had the same maturity as someone my

age,” says Sanam Vaidya, a junior at LASA. On the flip side, Nikita doesn’t want someone too mature, say in college. “Since I’m 18, if I’m dating like a 20 year old, we’re kind of in two different places in our lives, and there are just different expectations that come with that, and so it can get awkward at times,” Prasad says. If you have trouble altering your maturity level, try looking for someone whose maturity equals your own. Brigid Flanagan, another senior at LASA, admits that she has a sub-par maturity level compared to the rest of her class and grade, and as a result, she wouldn’t mind dating a underclassman. It all depends on how an individual fits with the another person and in this case, opposites don’t attract. When looking to attract a female friend, confidence, respect, honesty, trustworthiness and maturity consist of key attributes guys need to focus on. Remember, these qualities do have the ability to overwhelm the girl and put her off. Keep these tips in mind and any guy will have a girl under their wing in no time.

THE BIG DEBATE

Glasses

BY : Daniel rubio

hen choosing eye wear, what do you prefer glasses : or contacts? Do you feel that glasses are jewelry for your face or do you feel that glasses are nerdy? Do you feel peer pressured about receiving contacts? Well here you’ll learn how to fashion your face.

“I’ve never been made fun of but when I get into [an] argument some people do resort to ‘oh you have 4 eyes, you know glasses NERD’” Avishka, a LASA student, stated. These kind of things may change the reason why they may wear what they wear. Thinking how much thought remains actually put into the styles of glasses. Or how about having to go through the pain of contacts and forgetting to take off your contacts at night so in the morning there’s this stickiness on your eyelids. Thinking about switching from glasses or contacts. Have you considered wearing night contacts? How about thinking about the types of styles of glasses? Glasses and contacts are very common in the world. They each

An interviewee, Geoffrey.

24

provide the user the leisure of being fashionable or the leisure of being able to see without having to use glasses. There are many advantages and disadvantages for glasses and contacts but knowing which to buy is one thing, but facing consequences is another. Either way, glasses are for those that wish to be stylish and contacts are for those that wish to not wear glasses. Night contacts, a type of contacts that, “reshape your cornea so you don’t have to wear it during the day”, Geoffrey, a LASA student, said. This contains a new way to wear contacts that some people may take in order to not like to go through the irritation during the day. This allows people to not worry about wearing contacts during the day. There have rarely been any complications with these type of contacts however it is said that they may hurt during the first month, as they are reshaping part of your eye. For those that wear contacts during the day, this created a new innovative way for people to not worry about them. “Contacts have actually come a long way,” Mrs. Harrison stated,

“You’d get eye infections all the time and so I think the years of having to

An interviewee, Aviska

worry about those much.” She has also stated some con’s about glasses that change what to wear, “Glasses fog up, they fall off, they get loose they like it’s just a lot of high maintenance stuff with glasses and you have to like clean them and stuff but these contacts you just drop them in solution every night you put a little bit of cleaner every night.” Contacts, before, were causing many eye injuries, however contacts remain for those that wish to not wear glasses and for those that will care about the stereotypes. This allows them the freedom to look great and have excellent vision. The only disadvantage to contacts is that they take constant amount of time to put

in. Even though contacts have some disadvantages, they take away the beauty of not wearing glasses. Depending on which one you like, glasses come in different shapes and styles. There are the retro glasses that some LASA students wear, there exist the “average” glasses, and then there, exist glasses that can be made personally. Most people favor glasses because they contain stylish and they can go with pretty much any outfit. Glasses add the “flare” and for the reason the flare adds a new fashion statement. Whenever you want to look good, you can always wear your glasses and you can mix and match your clothes with your glasses. With glasses, there are different ways that they can be personalized. You can choose on which type of frame to have, you can even decide on the color. You can have the most stylish pair of glasses or you could have the simplest of glasses. Either way, they are your glasses and you decide what you want them to look like. Since glasses come on different styles, one can decide on which pair they want to buy. You can even create your own pair of glasses if you don’t like the ones that they have available. Depending on how much money you want to spend, you can design them to be whatever style you wish. For example buying the most popular glasses can present a fashion statement that you want to look good with glasses that go with anything where as if you were buying a mediocre type of glasses can show. Glasses have come a long way in the fashion industry. “Glasses either provide the main reason to be matching with outfits or they are just there to make you look more professional. The more professional you look, the more people take you

An interviewee, Mrs. Harrison

seriously but then again, looking good and professional is the best of both worlds. Even though I don’t use glasses, it’s pretty cool how many styles that there are,” Odalis, a LASA student, commented. Glasses, depending on the person, can provide a more professional look but glasses can also offer a new way to become more fashionable than what you already are. Even though you can become more fashionable with glasses, they also have some drawbacks. Glasses are a hassle when it comes to taking care of them. Glasses can fall off your face and then they fall and they could break. Once they break, you would have to go and fix them in order for you to use them the next day. On the other hand, contacts are very reliable but you always have to remember to maintain them clean so you can use them the next day. Depending on what you like, you can pretty much decide what you want to wear. Many people are used to wearing glasses while others are barely getting the hang of wearing them. “I’m used to them by now. I’ve been wearing glasses for a long time [and] it depends on what you really do and what you like,” Suyi, a LASA student, stated. Wearing glasses can take time to accustomed to, but once you have a good amount of time with

your pair of glasses, then you become more comfortable with what you wear on your face. This is the same with contacts. It takes a certain amount of time in order to get used to them, but it is worth it once you are able to put on your contacts in less than a minute. In either case, it depends on what you like to do and what you want to wear everyday for the rest of your life. People decide to wear glasses because they are already used to wearing them everyday. Being comfortable is better than being in pain which is why most people prefer glasses rather than contacts. There have been many advancements

An interviewee, Ernesto

to glasses. There are tools that help your glasses stay on your face so when you are running or playing, your glasses won’t fall off your face. Instead of falling, they don’t go anywhere since you have your glasses attached to your body. Besides from there being different tools that can be used to modify glasses, there are lenses that act as the polarized lenses in sunglasses. If you want to use glasses rather than contacts, you can have a variety of items that you can use in order to modify your glasses. If you are outside in the sun, you can simply put on polarized lenses that go over your glass lenses and now you have instant sunglasses. This advancement in the world of glasses

25

has helped those that cannot find sunglasses that are able to cover their glasses as well as protect them from the sun’s rays. Glasses and contacts both have their advantages and disadvantages but overall, it depends on which one that you like the best and what you are doing while using them. They can be, “Straining to do some things that I like doing, for example I like to play basketball with my friends after school but glasses don’t let me because they keep on falling,” as Ernesto, a LASA student, stated. Glasses best suit fashionable eyewear but there remains a hassle to have. Contacts, on the other hand, provide one the ability to see without worrying about them falling off. Contacts allow those that wish to not wear glasses the ability to get closer to having perfect sight. Contacts move with your eye and they do not bother your line of vision. On the other hand, they can take a lot of time to carefully be placed inside the eye. Another setback to contacts is that you should always have your pair of glasses available to you at all times. You can never know when you might forget to put on your contacts, so having your glasses can help you during the day. Especially when it is the first month, make sure you bring your pair of glasses because it is better to be safe than sorry. Both eyewear’s stand expensive, but it all depends on the person that is buying them and what they want to do. Each person can decide on wearing glasses or they can decide on getting contacts. For those that play sports, contacts are very useful since they help your line of vision. Contacts can help you see better and this takes away the worry of wearing glasses. You can

26

focus more on your sport rather than the fact that your glasses could fall off and break, but for those that wish to play with glasses on, just remember that you’re risking the chance that your glasses could break. Many people that own glasses are being stereotyped since they are being called a “nerd” and this can make the person feel depressed or horrible. Not to mention, some people may not be able to afford contacts that could make their lives much easier. The mentioning of wearing contacts may have changed some people’s

thought so don’t think that this is your only change in character. Glasses can be fashionable but contacts can help those that don’t like wearing glasses, but remember, wearing contacts is your responsibility and if you don’t do it right, you can hurt yourself. Either one that you wish to get, you’re the one that will be responsible of taking good care of them. Losing your glasses or your contacts will cost you money and that’s something that you don’t want to do, so make sure you have a safe storage for them. There can also be such a thing as laser eye surgery. The fact that some eye irritations may occur, when wearing contacts, due to allergic reactions, make sure that your doctor confirms that you are able to wear them. At times there may be a piece of lint on your contacts, this will cause eye irritation

and doesn’t mean that you are allergic to something, in a case like this make sure you clean your contacts regularly. Here’s something to keep in mind when you begin wearing contacts: make sure you have enough time to correctly place each contact in the correct location. As a result of not doing this correctly, you may sense your eyes becoming worse. Glasses and contacts both have their advantages and disadvantages but overall, it depends on which one that you like the best. They can be, “Straining to do some things that I like doing, for example I like to play basketball with my friends after school but glasses don’t let me because they keep on falling,” as Ernesto stated. Glasses best suit fashionable eye wear but there remains a hassle to have. Contacts, on the other hand, provide one the ability to see without worrying about them falling out. They also can take a lot of time to be able to put them on. Both eye wears expensive, but it all depends on the person that is buying them. The thought that wearing contacts may have changed some thought so don’t think that this is your only change in thought. Not to mention some people may not be able to afford the contacts so take this under consideration when stereotyping someone, as you may make them feel horrible. Glasses can be fashionable but contacts can help those that don’t like wearing glasses, but remember, wearing contacts is your responsibility and if you don’t do it right, you can hurt yourself. There can also be such a thing as laser eye surgery.
