t’s been a difficult time getting this magazine up and running, but it’s been a rewarding one. Through thick and thin, Illustrator and Interviews, we have struggled to create this magazine.
We started out with one thing in common: an interest in media. We all came into the group with very different ideas of what that meant, however. Our greatest challenges have probably been sorting out among ourselves what we wanted this magazine to be. Some of us came thinking of movies, some of us games, and some of us from their phones. With so many diverse viewpoints, we decided to do the only thing we could: use them all. So we each went with our specialty, and we all got to work on things that interested us. With us each working on our own topics, we slowly put together a magazine under the broader topic of entertainment and social media. After months of work, we incorporated all of our ideas into a single magazine, and at long last we have finished. We have all had a great time creating this magazine, and have learned so much from our work. We would like to thank all those who helped us along this goal, including our teacher, Ms. Katopodis, and all of our wonderful interviewees that we have worked with throughout the semester. We are very proud of the work we have done, and are very glad to have been able to work on this. -Entermedia Design Team

Behind The Scenes Of The Austin Film Festival
What makes this festival so unique
by: Maria Rivera Lights, camera, action! Austin Film Festival season has arrived and students from all over Austin are working with Stacy Brick to try to improve their artistic talents in filmmaking. They have the opportunity to study the elements of film guided by a DSC [Digital Storytelling Curriculum} created specifically for teenagers. A DSC teaches the ways to form a professional film plot and helps them advance their natural talents. “Anyone can submit a film or script to the festival...I love being able to expose students to the great resources that AFF has to offer,” Brick said. Students being able to work with a professional DSC is not the only thing that the AFF [Austin Film Festival] has to offer. The AFF includes many competitions and entertainment opportunities, but what makes this festival so much more unique than the other yearly big events in Austin? The AFF gives different learning and creative opportunities to the people in Austin. Though some feel that the AFF is nothing more than some simple competitions it is actually made up of different activities that help Filmmakers express them selves using their work. “By introducing young people to the film industry, the program hopes
Page 12
to provide them new mediums to express their creativity, improve their communication skills and benefit the entire arts community,” Brick said. The Young Filmmakers program introduces students to screenwriting and filmmaking. The program offers opportunities for the young filmmakers to share their work with the public and professional filmmakers. The organization is open to people ages nine through eighteen. This organization works with the AFF to help develop the creativity of Austin young people. This program also offers 300 scholarships to students and teachers. Also offered is the chance to attend AFF and a conference to receive professional filmmaking tips and learn about the art and business behind filmmaking. “AFF is the only film festival dedicated to the art of screenwriting.” Brick said “We have great panelists who come to Austin to talk to registrants about all aspects of writing for television and film.”

to the art of filmmaking and the expansion of the creativity in people in Austin. The AFF has been runnigng for seven years now and continues to grow in popularity. This festival consists of multiple film competitions and entertainment opportunities. Although the festival is only held once a year there are many activities and conferences throughout the year that everyone can participate in.

“I deal with everything from creative elements with the event, marketing, promotion, staff management, budgeting and accounting, to morale issues….and occasionally taking out the trash,” Barbara Morgan said. Since the first AFF Morgan has worked and seen the festival evolve in popularity. Executive Director Barbara Morgan does almost everything she can to be able to make the festival a great experience for every attendant. “The festival is a great opportunity for people to achieve recognition and inspiration for their work,” Morgan said. “I have been to many festivals now and we manage to connect more people personally and emotionally than most any festival out there.” Morgan says she likes working with the contestants because of the way they think up ideas. Being up close to the contestants helps her know and gives her insight about some of the decisions that they made with their film. The AFF gives a chance for people to see what the career of filmmaking is all about and what decisions should be made to achieve greatness in this practice. “ Inspiration is one of the key elements of the Austin Film Festival,” Morgan said. Both Morgan and Brick’s work involve working with people with
James Franco posing at the 2012 Austin Film Festival to see the first film screening. This is one of the many times he has participated in the festival. He contributes to the festival by giving his opinions of the film career and giving professional advice to the film students present.

incredibly big imaginations. Brick works with young students to try to improve their artistic expression and incorporate that into their work. Morgan said she on the other hand works with people from all ages to try to understand their personal film choices. The first step to accomplishing their goals is to be full of creativity themselves. “ I studied film in graduate school and I enjoy speaking to students about all aspects of film,” Brick said. The AFF comes with more than just professional opinion: the majority of the people that work in the festival have some sort of film industry experience. Staff members like Brick studied film while others
are just film lovers. The festival was composed for film lovers and made by film lovers. “It is my baby and I love what we do here,” Morgan said. Festival attendees are not the only people that: enjoy the AFF, the staff are just as enthusiastic about it as anyone. For Morgan who has been a part of the AFF team since 1993, this festival is like a tradition. The staff loves working with young minds and talented people; Morgan said “...this is our strength…,” when asked if the AFF help people express their creativity.
The Austin Film Festival, dedicated to the art of filmmaking, is composed of a staff that runs by a single motivation hel ping the filmmaking industry. They accomplish this by helping creative writers express themselves in their work and better their techniques. But the effect that the festival has on the participants is amazing, the AFF is an inspiring part of Austin and the community.
“We are a writer’s festival and we were the first festival to honor the screenwriter,” Morgan said.

How to Apply the Design
By: Morgan Walters
Many mobile phone applications [apps] aren’t successful, but then there are many apps that become one of the most used apps. Evan Spiegel, the developer of the hugelysuccessful app Snapchat, now runs an $860 million company, a feat all the more remarkable when considering Spiegel’s age, only 23. People aspire to have the success of Spiegel, and often start at a young age, like Spiegel himself. Neil Patil, a application developer has started out young and will try to create a successful application later on.
“
Idea is the hardest thing about creating an app because really you can learn the tools to build what you’re trying to build, thats no problem, you can learn that and if you have the time you can easily implement that into something. But the thing is if you don’t have a solid idea its gonna be doomed from the start. -Neil Patil

Page18
The design process of applications can take a very long time for anybody to make. Especially if the designer is going to create and design the app. Even for professional app designers, the process can still take a really long time, even with them knowing how to do everything. The amount of time that the process takes really depends on how good the designer would like their app. There are many steps for making the applications.
“
Eventually I would like to get one my apps on the app store and I have a couple ideas for what I could make, but I don’t have any definite plans for getting an app on the app store. -Newman
“
Millions of apps are sold and used each day, but nobody really pays attention to the difficult process of developing them. While downloading apps may be easy, the development can be very tedious. “The amount of time it takes to design and create an application varies widely and depends heavily on how ambitious the application’s design is and what kind of resources are available.” said Philip Bowden, a professional app designer.
“
There are so many steps while making applications but then there are many that are more important than others. The designer will have some steps that are major but then also have some that aren’t that important but then you still needs them to make the app. “Then you find your idea and you’re like okay so lets see if there is something that would do this for me, so you go and look for like an app or some kind of program that you can download and use and see if it actually works well for you to be able to use it. Said Neil. Now if that doesn’t happen then that means there’s an open market. now if you yourself can create something that can do that task.” Once the deisgner found, something that hasn’t been created or used before, you can then continue the design process for the app you’re creating. “Now the third step you
may or may not need, which is just learning how to do, how to implement your idea. said Neil. So like learning the program, learning android, that sort of thing. Like for me that step was kind of short, because I already know how to program. If you want to be able to go out and develop the app it can take some time to actually get the skills and knowledge and expertise to actually make it.” With the knowledge to actually create the app, the designer can then start to make parts of the application. “The fourth step, I would say would be making like small projects that do like part of what you want to do. Said Neil. Like for example maybe make one small app, and you don’t publish these apps you just do it to learn, you’re basically making pieces of the puzzle/app and you put it all together into a final product.” If there are many different parts of the application, the designer then can join them all together and have pretty much your whole app, but then still needs to actually design the application.
This is xCode a program that is used to design applications, most application designers use this program to design the application. Photo Credit: xCode
This is an application being downloaded on the app store. This is how every mobile application is downloaded, from the app store. Photo Credit: Google Play
“
After you do that you want to design it, make the app, figure out how to make is nice, easy to use, efficient, fast, that sort of thing. Thats pretty important because if you don’t design it well then it gets really painful. So after designing then you actually build it. -Patil.
“
“
There are a couple major steps of making the app, the first step is like the random idea pops into your head step, in which you aren’t actively thinking about it or you aren’t thinking about making apps but you come home or you’re doing something mundane and you’re like wait this could be a lot easier if I did this, or I have an idea for this that would be really cool, is there anything that does it. -Neil Patil

“
I started making apps around three or four years ago, although in the beginning, I was pretty bad at it. Through following tutorials online and various other methods, I eventually got better, although I am still far from being any sort of expert on making apps. -Newman
“
Once the whole app is designed, there still is probably have a lot of things wrong with the app, that you could fix and make it look better. “Right after that you want, the polishing stage actually takes like almost 40% of the time because it takes a while to make something work and just look nice.” said Patil. The amount of time that someone spends on their app really depends on a lot of things. It depends on how well you want your app to look, and how experienced the designer is with designing applications. With more experience, things will look better, and the process will go by a lot faster.
Developers become successful by starting out at a young age, but not always being successful in the beginning. The process takes a lot of time, especially if someone is just starting out, but with more practice the faster the design process will go. The steps for the design process really depends on what soemone already knows how to do, and how successful they want the app end product to look like. “Making and shipping software is really hard and can drag on for a long time, and it’s always tempting to fix one more bug or add one more feature.” said Philip Bowden

t’s been taken over by TVs, DVDs, VCRs, and even microwaves, but no one has ever fully abandoned it. It’s important, sometimes portable, and cheap. Radios have taken the world by storm, but has that metaphorical storm mellowed? Radio stations and operations are important because they give information and can help many people. Radio operating is very simple. It’s just people talking to each other.
A radio used to recieve broadcast waves sent by radio transmitters
“Operating radios is mainly just people talking to each other one-on-one, like a phone call, but with more technology,” Liz Nichols said, a four-year veteran in radio operating.

spreading information quickly, such as if there is a government shutdown, the news will need to be spread. “My radio operation is important because we give information to give to others to give to others,” Nichols said. “Giving information is not only a hobby, but a passion.” But radio operating is not just for emergencies. For Nichols, radio operating is not only important, but fun. “The reason I wanted to operate radios was because I like helping people know what they need to know,” Nichols said. “I loved the concept of helping people, and when I heard of the concept when I was little, I just went with it.” Radio operating is simple, yet very advanced at the same time, because of the technology used.
The inside of a radio that is used by radio operators to transmit broadcast waves
“Operating radios is fun, but I can only contact one person at a time. But on the plus side, I can communicate quickly, so it can be spread faster. Even though I only contact with one person at a time, the people I contact make contact with others, so the news gets spread like a brushfire,” Nichols said. Not many other radio operations are dedicated to only helping people. Some are dedicated to communicating to other people across the world. “The only radio operation I would work for would be the one I work for currently, because I don’t like jobs I don’t contribute to and make a difference.” Radio operations are spread worldwide, because they can help people in emergencies. “My job is important because I collaborate with others to help

citizens,”Nichols said. “such as if there is a fire, I can contact the police.” Radio stations and operations are important because they can give information to others. Even with the limitations created with radio contacting, it is still useful, such as if all they have to contact is a radio. But sometimes radio operations malfunction, possibly if there is a major storm or power outage, and many won’t be aware of other unprecedented events. “If the radio broadcasts somehow can’t be transmitted, we have a big problem. Since the broadcasts can’t be transmitted, people won’t be able to hear what we have to say, such as if there is a storm heading their way, they won’t be able to be warned because of malfunctions,”Nichols said. A radio can make or break somebody’s life, especially if that is all they have.

Senet
Senet was an Ancient Egyptian game dating back to around 3500 BCE. The exact rules have been lost, but that hasn’t stopped some scientists from making up their own versions anyway.
Dice Games
Dice games, originating in Asia, are just about the oldest in history. The oldest known set of dice were found in southeastern Iran, and date back to 3,000 years ago. So next time you roll snake eyes, blame Iran, it’s their fault.
Backgammon
A game in the Tables family, Backgammon came into it’s current form in the 6th or 7th century CE. However, older precursors to backgammon have been found in places such as Iran (dating back to 3000 BCE) and Senet is believed to also be a precursor to the game.

ccording to Chinese legend, a wise man once presented his king with a gift. It took the form of a board game, and its purpose was to help the king understand the importance of his subjects. The king took an instant liking to the game, and it became popular throughout the whole southeastern region of Asia. That game, now commonly called chess, one of the earliest games known to man. People have been getting bored and creating games for as long as humans have been around. The process that has led to modern games started over five thousand years ago, and games have been evolving ever since. Start here to follow this evolution, from Chess to Pong to Kinect, and discover what exactly lead to all those dozens of games on your phone.

Three students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology created a game called ‘Spacewar!’ in 1961. Considered the first shooter game, Spacewar! inspired many other programmers to start creating their own games.
Pong
Also created by Bushnell and Dabney, ‘Pong’ released in 1972. It worked like previous games, but it was first achieve mainstream popularity, according to pong-story.com.
Naughts and Crosses
In 1951, Alexander S. Douglas invented the first game to use a digital graphical display. It was a version of Tic-Tac-Toe, and used a rotary telephone controller to control the game. Well, they didn’t exactly have Xbox controllers, did they?
First Generation Consoles
1972 saw the release of the Magnavox Odyssey, the first home console system. However, for some games player still had to tape overlays to the television in order to play. 100,000 consoles were sold within its first year.

Kinect
The holder of the Guinness Book of World Records’ ‘fastest selling consumer electronics device’ award, Microsofts Kinect allowed for gaming without controllers, instead, favoring motion sensors. Released November 4, 2010, it had sold 10 million units by March 9, according to engadget.com.

ooking across a massive desert, Jim Redner craned his neck to look behind him. Around him, all he could see was a post-apocalyptic wasteland, devoid of civilization. He turned in a full circle, looking out across the arid landscape.
“Originally Palmer Luckey (...he is 21 years old, but he was 19 when we launched our Kickstarter) was just trying to find some way to step inside the games he was playing,” said Redner. “For 3 years he worked
The Rift started off on Kickstarter funding a number of years ago. They raised a total of $2.4 million on Kickstarter and an additional $16 million in a series A funding. Currently, development kits remain available from the company which allow developers to convert existing games onto the Rift format. “[We] decided to build a business around the headset. Kickstarter funded the first development kits and got the ball rolling,” Redner said. The Rift does not win the prize of the first virtual reality product sold on the market. People have created others over the years, but none recently and they contained many problems. “He saved his money and purchased a number of VR headsets, none of which were very good,” said Redner. “He then decided to build his own. For three years he worked in his garage on various prototypes until he developed the first prototype for what eventually became the Rift.” A few years later, the Rift has started generating a lot of hype. The concept of having a virtual reality device with which to play games has captivated players for years, and now that it might become a reality, a
“I started working with Oculus in July 2012. I met Palmer Luckey, founder and creator of Oculus at an event after the E3 trade show in 2012,” Redner said. The Rift was first conceptualized by Palmer Luckey at age 19, who along with John Carmack and a few Page 32

“The Rift is an entirely new way to play games, an entirely new medium for game developers to harness,” said Redner. The Rift also provides gaming developers with new opportunities, with a whole new format with which to create games. The device allows for the creation of whole new genres of games. “I think we will see games that try to mimic experiences people wish they could have in real life, not just the achievement/competition-based games that currently dominate the industry.” Luckey originally designed the Rift for gaming. However, as development continues, the company has begun imagining completely
different applications for the product. “Gaming is what we’re most excited about. However, we’ve also seen it used in other areas, such as architecture, travel, real estate, medical treatment, films/movies, retail, military and other areas,” Redner siad. The company has even grander plans though, using high tech technology in order to create technology not thought possible until recently.

lot of anticipation has built up.

“Another application we find fascinating is telepresence,” said Render. “It should be possible to use a virtual reality headset and motion capture/feedback hardware to control a robotic avatar many miles away, feeling as if the avatar is your own body. That will have massive implications for the exploration, emergency response, defense, and service industries!” The Rift not only brings about a new age in gaming, it represents a major technological milestone for the world.
“We are moving into an age of ubiquitous automation, but some tasks are too critical to leave to an algorithm,” said Redner. “When it is expensive or dangerous to get humans to those tasks, VR telepresence will fill the gap.” The Rift represents a huge milestone for gamers everywhere, but it also contains major implications for the world. Once this group of brilliant people at Oculus VR are finished with the device, one can only guess what they will create next.
