Mo’ Microsoft, Less Problems

T

Thirty-six years ago, Microsoft was a mere child of a company, struggling to sell one of its own products, without it being inside of IBM or Apple’s products. Today, Microsoft is a big-booming business, and is the model for every small business company. I believe that Microsoft has a better marketing system and strategy than any of its competition. The company has more products in different varieties, (computers and gaming consoles) and they have sold much more of those products than IBM (computers, software, flash drives), and Sony’s multiple gaming consoles (Ps2-Ps3 mostly). According to nexgenwars, the Xbox 360 has been bought more than the PlayStation 3 (“About million to 26 million”), last year. This shows that people prefer Microsoft’s products, and it is now almost

media based advertising that influences sales for their merchandise. In 2009, every second on T.V., Microsoft has had a commercial that is promoting new products, or new versions for the same product. Remember those “Windows 7 was my idea,” commercials back in 2009 and 2010? According to advertising.mircosoft.com, like the default for every sort of type of technology you plan to buy in the near future. Even though Microsoft did not come out first, and IBM did, the company had better ideas and products. Bill Gates generally cared more for what he and his partner Paul were doing, they worked harder to sell their products in a better manner, and eventually, they were able to beat IBM in the vicinity, and globally. IBM’s strategy is to focus on what people can do, not on what they cannot do. They also want to get them to see “themselves in their advertisements, while Microsoft is using the “for the people by the people” technique. “Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software, services and solutions that help people and businesses realize their full potential.” Microsoft.com Microsoft

has

more

care of it.) They may also try to argue that Apple is worth more than Microsoft now (in the trillions), and that some of IBM’s income for its products is more than Microsoft’s. Need I remind you that it was Microsoft itself, who developed software/hardware, which IBM and Apple used in their products back in the 1970 and 80’s. This of which helped these companies to

“Microsoft is the worldwide leader in software, services, and solutions that help people...” those commercials aired over 300,000 time in the U.S.” We were putting all our money for advertising that year,” says Microsoft’s marketing strategist David Webster. Microsoft made all those commercials to implement their strategy to reach multiple varieties of people, to buy their products. The opposing team could say that other companies produce better qualities, and longer lasting products because there have been many cases that the Xbox 360 tends to break after the first 6 months upon buying the console. The Sony console, PlayStation 3, lasts longer, because of its super strong processor.(but it depends on what games you play, and how you take

persevere, and get to where they are today. Bill Gates even bought an operating system, reworked it, and sold it to IBM for eighty-thousand dollars. If Microsoft was able to hold down IBM for well over fifthteen years, then they can do it again. In conclusion, go and try the Xbox 360, or any other of Microsoft’s products, and see how you like it. Or you can go to the E3 press conference (or watch it online) next year to see Microsoft’s new products and stay attentive to their marketing.

What Parents Don’t Know About Gaming Will Hurt Them

O

On a regular August day in Thailand, 19-year-old Polwat Chino climbed into a taxi car. “Where ya wanna go kid?” the taxi driver asked. Polwat said nothing and suddenly attacked the man. When the man tried to defend himself, Polwat stabbed him to death with a knife. He tried to drive away with the bleeding cab driver in the back seat but the cops soon caught up with him. When The Daily Telegraph reported on the event they asked what Polwat’s motives where. Polwat replied, “I wanted to know if it was as easy to rob a cab in real life as it is the game Grand Theft Auto.” This is one example of why parents should prevent teens and children from playing violent video games and why they should be more aware of the games their children are playing. As you all know kids play hours upon hours of video games, but do parents really know what kind of content appear in these games? The Palo Alto Medical Foundation conducted a study in 2009 that shows that a “majority of parents don’t know what their kids are playing.” Another research project done by the AACAP in 2007 showed that it “isn’t just the content but also how long these kids play the game.” According to the article

in The Daily Telegraph Polwat played Grand Theft Auto countless hours a day and that led to the game influencing his day-to-day life. If the kids played age appropriate games, then violence would not be so much of a problem. The bad thing about the games they do play is that they involve blood, gore, killing innocent people, theft, and sexual themes. Not only do the long hours of playing these kinds of games influence the kid’s personality, it can also affect the way they see things. Your child could go from seeing cops as good

or principal. Also 22% of boys and 16% of girls who played these games were suspended from school. Now I know this may be a shock to some of you but this is the effect of these violent games. Along with violence in video games that make kids aggressive and cause trouble at school, it can also lead to children having less self-control. The Indiana University School of Medicine Researchers had 44 teens play either a violent or a non-violent video game for 30 minutes. After that, they each had

games have no effect what so ever on teens, but they are quite wrong. How do you explain a kid that steals a car and then proceeds to rob a bank with that car? This kid must possess some influence for why he or she did what they did, and there is a chance that it could be the result of violent video games like in Polawt’s case. To prevent these side effects parents must do a number of things. They should check to see if the game they just bought their child is appropriate. They should also limit the time their kids spend playing

“Polwat replied, ‘I wanted to know if it was as easy to rob a cab in real life as it is the game Grand Theft Auto.’ ” guys to seeing cops as bad guys. If your child or friend is more aggressive because of the violent gaming, they can also be prone to getting in trouble at school. In 2008 Lawrence Kutner, PhD, and Cheryl K. Olsen, ScD did a survey on 7th and 8th grade boys and girls at various middle schools in El Paso that tried to find out if these accusations where true. Indeed they were, 60% of boys and 49% of girls who played M-Rated games got in trouble with a teacher

an MRI where they studied the kids’ brains. The results showed increased activity in the region of the brain that controls emotional arousal and causes them to lash out, and a decrease activity in the self-control area of the brain in the teens that had been playing the violent game. This could be a problem because with less self-control these teens could make bad choices like doing drugs, theft, and murder. The writers of Physorg. com say that these violent

“Jailbreaking can damage devices by inserting a worm or perhaps corrupting files.” how bad the downsides of jailbreaking your Apple product can be considering you can give identity thieves your bank information. You may also end up on an email listing from phishing sites due to jailbreaking and receive spam messages from random product companies. Jailbreaking is an unstable and insecure way to unlock more features on your Apple products. On her July 26, 2010 post, Cult of Mac writer Leander Kahney says, “Unfortunately, the Apple spokeswoman would only provide me with the following statement: ‘As we’ve said before, the vast majority of customers do not

This causes people to be much more cautious about jailbreaking. Jailbreaking can damage Apple devices by inserting a worm or perhaps corrupting files. Supporters of jailbreaking argue people looking for a resourceful way to receive more apps and extensions and claim that Apple is being unfair for not refunding a new product, Apple users say this claim on various threads. Apple states that jailbreaking their product voids their

warranty and can even harm their device. Whatever goes wrong with the jailbroken device is the owner’s fault, not Apple’s. Jailbreaking allows the installation of programs such as worms onto Apple products. Ashley Towns created a program known as ikee which would change the background image of Apple products to Rick Astley to show the insecurity of jailbreaking. He exploits the use of an SSH installed to the iPhone. This allows people to modify system and files of the iPhone. Louisa Hearn’s Sydney Morning Herald

article in November 13, 2009 reports, “...the consensus from security experts is that police are unlikely to act unless there is lasting damage or cost resulting from Towns’ actions.” The worm was not harmful in any way to the iPhone, however after the incident another malicious worm appeared. The incident showed the insecurity Towns shown with his worm. The worm targeted people in the Netherlands using jailbroken iPhones for internet banking. According to a BBC news article published on November 23, 2009, “It redirects the bank’s customers

to a lookalike site with a log-in screen. It’s fairly isolated and specific to Netherlands but it is capable of spreading.” If a person can create a worm that can target jailbroken products, then the capability of a hacker group would be outrageous. Some people claim that if you change your password frequently, then these problems could be avoided. Phishing sites masking the appearance of a commonly used websites, such as Facebook or email, allows for problems other than worms

and instead of logging in, give you an error screen saying the information you inserted was incorrect. Phishing sites don’t require brute force in trying to decode your password, but rather you are handing your password directly into their vault of stolen information. Updating the iOS of your jailbroken Apple product is quite difficult. If you are using a jailbroken product, you must take many more steps to update the iOS of your system. A bit of paint here and there, a light tap of the finger on the keyboard, and art is born. That’s what most of us think. Well, that’s not the case, because it takes a lot of other different aspects go into making a greater piece of imagination (And a lot of realistic thinking and logic). A man or woman in their late teens have a lot of options in their life. Some choose the path of Scientific and mathematical opportunities, and some, the path of an urbane course: the arts. The Art Institute of Austin, a recently structured college making their students into productive citizens in the art-world, since 2008. However, the school leaves a longer tail into Chicago, Illinois, back in the twentieth century. With over forty schools across North America, and over 300 students, the Art Institute has enlightened numerous people, and prepared them for the “art world”. Students from all over the world come to this college, where art is their real test, in order to become very well rounded and experienced

12

Alongside the attendants of the school, the student body often makes suggestions to help the institute help carry out their educational mission. “From when I attended, I’d say we’ve had over five changes to the courses. For a college, that’s a lot. I’m pretty sure it would be nerve-wrecking for other colleges.” Johnson said. That may be the case; however, the courses offered are year-round, so the student can continue their work, and not be interrupted by having to re-sign up for the class, because of multiple changes in schedules and classes. There are also multiple different courses that the student can choose to take that apply to their specific major. “It’s kinda’ like you have to take them in order to actually know what the heck you’re doing later on. It’s worth it though- after all, it’s not easy being an art student.” D’vante said. “I speak from experience, from every class I took, one thing remained the same: simplicity is everything. You want to make it complex enough to draw in a fan base, but simple enough for this audience to understand what you are advertising.” Tristan D’vante, a soon-to-

be graduate from the college, who has a Bachelor’s degree of science for graphic/technical design, also elaborates on being an art student, as well as his challenges along with it. “Getting to school was a little obstacle within itself, I guess, since, you know, I didn’t have a car a couple of years ago, and I didn’t live near the school. However, all that nocar money from my job, went to getting my art supplies.” D’vante said. “The really hard part of school was trying to reel in potential clients with portfolios and billboards, while still trying to juggle several designing projects for your next class.”Johnson said. Considering that the average graphic designer (Entry- level) makes about forty to forty-five thousand dollars a year (75, if you’re good), some may think that being a graphic designer

doesn’t match up with being a doctor or a lawyer, or an architect. Annual Salary-wise, yes, but this job does play a large role in society, especially in the technology era. “Graphic designers indeed get credit nowadays. Especially with the motion attached games phenomenon. Like the Wii and Kinect, The geniuses behind these are seriously banking. It looks like Opportunity knocked on their doors twice, and skipped ours.” D’vante said, laughing. Even though the “Now Hiring” signs have been reducing in great amounts over time, you can still see kids working one or multiple jobs, because entry-level jobs don’t give enough money to pay for America’s demands these days. It’s a good start, but sooner or later you would need a higher paying job to suffice for your current one. ”That’s what they start you out with, but a good

way is to find a low paying job, then quit after two years. You’ll be more likely to get hired then.” D’vante said. Nonetheless, so far, over 150 graduates have gone to work for EA (Electronic Arts), a popular gaming company, best known for their sports games, like NBA 2K11 for example. Other have also gone to work for Sony, and even Disney. Johnson says she has “potential miracle clients” waiting, as well as for Mr. D’vante. All the while, the Art Institute of Austin continues to help young minds stay on the path of their passion they choose.

anymore because with Netflix I feel I have control over what I want to watch when I want to watch it and I really like that.” Many people seem to think that the ability of Netflix to instant stream instead of delivery is convenient, but the delivery includes all the movies available. Jones’

freshman, Garrick Nichols. He is one of the many

instead of keeping both since they can pay less for less or pay more for the same. In the third fiscal quarter (period of time used for calculating financial statements of organizations), Netflix lost 800,000 customers yet still turning a profit with the increase from $9.99 to $15.98. Netflix has millions of customers to serve, and probably turn a profit. However, serving millions of customers, many whom enjoy the service, Netflix decided to increase prices. Netflix seemed to think that people would

customers that stumble upon this predicament. He is an avid user of Netflix, watching one or two TV shows through Netflix per day. He thinks the delivery of the DVDs is quite speedy. “Sometimes instead of watching TV, I’ll just use my iPad to watch some shows,” he claims. People like him are starting to use Netflix more and more rather than just watch TV. Another LASA freshman, Chris Jones, seems to agree. Jones’ says, “I don’t watch HBO

however, disagrees and believes the DVD deliveries take around one week which is an inconvenience compared to the instant streaming. Jones’ opinion on the wait of the DVD services is that, “It actually does take some time, like a week I’d say. It’s not very convenient.” Garrick Nichols’ mother, Elizabeth, uses Netflix differently. Elizabeth only uses Netflix as a supplement to TV and cable. It seems that the younger, up-and-coming generation uses Netflix more due to knowing more about how to use the tools available through Netflix. The older generation seems to watch TV instead due to the ease of pressing a button and instantly watching a TV show. The new generation understands how to use Netflix and choose specific TV shows they want to watch. The Nichols’ have been using Netflix for about two years while the Jones’ have

start up. This could all be a different scenario depending on whether his parents decide to cut Netflix or keep it along with the price increase. Netflix now advertises with saying they recently reduced their prices to sell their product with their lowest prices ever; which is the partial truth, if you only buy one service. Netflix tried to maximize its profits with splitting its previous services into two separate services. The services split into DVD by mail and instant streaming from devices such as smartphones

been using Netflix for about three years. The growing popularity of Netflix grabbed their attention, which attracted them to start using Netflix. The customers see the only problem as the instant streaming. Jones’ says, “The only problem I have is like sometimes when I want to watch a movie like look it up on the streaming, it won’t be able to stream it. It says DVD only it just means I can still watch it, I just have to wait longer but no, other than that it has been pretty reliable for me.” Garrick has a similar experience. Garrick says, “The instant stream doesn’t include all the movies that I want to watch.” The customers seem to agree other than the instant streaming; Netflix is a reliable product to use with no other problems. Customers who use Netflix only use it on weekends or hardly on weekdays. Jones’ says, “With school, I don’t really have time to watch Netflix during the week. So I just stream on the weekends.” People seem to keep the viewing usually under an hour on weekdays and extend to time on weekends from less work to do. Some Netflix customers believe that Netflix is not worth their money after their price increase while others disagree. Garrick says, “I would say that would kind of almost be a rip off but also provides other

customers who use Netflix a lot more with opportunity to almost go over that amount so the ratio [of viewing time to price paid] benefits them.” Although Garrick believes that the amount paid for the time his family and he view is against them, others find that they are paying well worth the cost due to them viewing many shows and using Netflix to their full benefit. Comparing a family that uses Netflix frugally to a family that uses Netflix regularly have different views. On the issue of Netflix being worth

because I mean even if I’m not the one in my house watching it all week, I can just watch it on weekends. I still have a sister and two parents that might want to stream on the weekdays, so household overall makes it worth it.” The Nichols’ family recently canceled their DVD by mail service reducing their monthly fee by half. The family still uses the instant streaming however they won’t always have the benefit of choosing any movie they want which people enjoy about the services.

“It makes me worry because I think other customers are probably finding better services.” his money, Jones’ responded, “Yes definitely. TV, there’s not always something good on, but Netflix you get to choose what you watch when you watch it. There are no commercials; you don’t have to waste your time.” He really enjoys being able to control what he wants to watch instead of allowing the TV to control what he can watch. After explaining that most people actually pay over what they would if they instead rented one video at a time from a company such as Hollywood Videos or Blockbuster, he responds, “Makes me like it a little less but it wouldn’t make me stop using it altogether,

People’s feelings over Netflix losing 800,000 customers seem to be one of a consensus, Netflix made a poor decision without completely overlooking all the aspects of the change. Garrick says, “It makes me worry because I think other customers are probably finding better services so it might influence me and my family to look for a better TV service such as Blockbuster movie.” People may possibly either try and live without the luxury of Netflix or competitors may have caught on to this opportunity Netflix unintentionally handed them.

Jones’ seems to feel similar with saying it was a shame for Netflix, but he will continue enjoying their services. Elizabeth says, “Executive leadership failed to anticipate what the market would bear on changes; also failed to envision future paths of DVDs and streaming.” Netflix seems to be generally happy though, as with this change they have gained a net profit although losing this many customers. More people may start going towards other services such as Hulu or Blockbuster movie instead of Netflix due to the price. The Nichols’ seem to be part of the customers becoming wary of their losses from the greediness of Netflix. Other families such as the Jones’ have enough people using both the services for them to keep paying for both. Netflix may undergo more changes from the reaction of customers depending on whether they deem necessary.
