What’s Your Body Type? Here’s a tool to find out your body type and what looks best on you. We found these four common categories for you to look at and pick the right body type for you, and what to wear!

Hourglass

Petite If you have a petite frame, show off your legs! It will make you appear taller with a shorter dress, a floor length could overwhelm your figure. Add a little height with heels. Choose a dress that adds curves, such as layers or a fitted waist. You have a PETITE body type if... • You’re below average height • Slim frame • Narrow shoulders

An hourglass body type is easy to dress for. Your figure can pull off almost anything! Go for kneelength dresses with a slight flare that hug your waist. A fitted dress works well, with a scoop neck or V-neck working well with your shape. You have an HOURGLASS body type if... • You have a small waist • Well proportioned top and bottom half • See if your figure looks like the shape of an hourglass

Tall

Slender When you have a slender body type, add curves to your thin frame with a cinched waist, belt or wraparound dress. Draw attention to your legs with a short dress. Try anything that adds volume: frills, fluted edges, ruffled, pleated or flared dresses. You have a SLENDER body type if... • You have slim hips and shoulders • Small waist • Average or below average height

Wear heels to accent that tall frame. You can pull off floor length, or a short dress. Add accessories to break up the long line. Adding a belt will break the body in half and diffuse height. Chunky accessories will help to draw attention away from your up-and-down figure. Try a fitted bodice with a flared skirt.

You have a TALL body type if... • You’re above average height • Broad shoulders • Long torso or legs

13

What glasses fit you? Square face shape This face shape is broad, has a wide jaw line, a square chin, and a deep forehead. We recommend round and oval style frames, and recommend that thin, angular and square style frames should not be worn. That only emphasize the square shape , rather than giving the appearance of the ordinary oval face shape.

Heart face shape This face shape has a broad forehead, tapering to a small mouth and chin. We recommend square or rounded styles, we recommend that styles that are wider at the top be avoided, otherwise the face would appear unbalanced.

Long face shape This face shape has a deep forehead, high cheekbones, and is narrow. We recommend small, geometric styles. We also recommend that any small styles be avoided, it only emphasize how the long the face shape is.

Round face shape This face shape is relatively short with a wide forehead, as well as a rounded chin and full cheeks. We recommend styles that are wider or square shapes that draw attention to the upper face. Glasses with decor at the temples would also look nice. We recommend that small, circular shaped glasses should be avoided, because it only emphasizes the round face shape.

Oval face shape This face shape is well rounded. This is the ideal face shape and is the average face shape for many people. Fortunately, these people can rock relatively any frame of glasses. Depending on the person, they can decide what they feel doesn’t look great on them. Otherwise, their options are endless.

Week Before Prom

Skin care Use sunscreen (SPF 50 or more) regularly The sun can easily cause damage to the skin, promoting premature aging. Therefore, we recommend daily use of sunscreen. Choose a sunscreen that blocks both UVA and UVB rays. Also select a “nonacnegenic” or “noncomedogenic” on the label to help ensure clear, clean pores.

Treat your skin gently

- Limit your bath time. Long showers remove oils on the skin. - Avoid harsh soaps. Harsh soaps strip oils off the skin. - Shave carefully. Nicks and cuts damage your skin, also stripping oils. - Pat Dry. Gently blot the towel to maintain moisture in the skin.

Lips Always apply a decent lip balm on a daily basis. It prevents cracking, dryness, and visibly rough lips. Also ensure that it is 15 SPF or more to protect lips, regarding their sensitivity.

Wash your face every morning and night

Cleaning your face with a suitable face wash for whatever your skin might require (acne, oily, dry, dirty) is essential. It allows sweat and oil from the night to wash off, as well as provide you with a shine-free face. It refreshes your skin, so your ready to conquer the day!

Moisturizers

magical hair

for your magical night Our interview with professional hair stylist Lilia Figueroa Your Prom look will never be complete without a good hair style! Here are some ideas for your hair type of sleek, easy hair styles that will look great! We interviewed professional hair stylist, Lilia Figueroa, who has a license in cosmetology, and has answers for all of your questions about hair styles. Before we get into everything to do with prom hair, we asked Lilia about herself and general hair styles.

Haute Team: What is it about being a hairstylist that you like? Lilia Figueroa: I enjoy the creativity and the imagina-

Cute, Quick, Everyday Hair Styles! French Braids are very cute and do not take much time at all. First you start at the top of the head, with a little bit of hair, then you divide this piece of hair into three separate pieces of hair. Next, you take a piece of hair on the outside and put it over the middle piece of hair making that piece the new middle piece. You then take the opposite side, putting that piece over the new middle piece of hair. You continue, adding more hair in to the braid as you go.

tive aspect, and making people feel beautiful. I enjoy giving people the confidence they deserve.

Haute Team: What hair style do you recommend for a round face? Lilia Figueroa: I recommend face-framed layers. A side swept bang will de-emphasize the round face, giving it the ideal shape of an oval.

Haute Team: What are some cute, quick hairstyles that look good on everyone? Lilia Figueroa: Fishtail and French braids are really

Fishtail Braids are very pretty and really easy to do. All you have to do it separate your hair into two separate sections, you then take a piece of hair from the right section and put it over the right section and under the left section. You then do this with the left section and keep on repeating until you are finished!

cute and don’t take very much time. High ponytails, high buns, and side pony tails take even less time and are still very cute.

Haute Team: What are some good things about getting layers? What do they do for your hair? Lilia Figueroa: Layers provide movement in the hair and give the hair shape. It also gives your hair definition.

Haute Team: What can you do to create thinner hair on heavy, thick hair? Lilia Figueroa: One technique that I use to create thinner hair is I use my thinning shears, which have 32 teeth that cut in between the teeth, creating less bulk.

22

High Ponytails talk literally 2 minutes and are still really fun and peppy. All you have to do is brush your hair, gather it all together in one section, and then tie with an elastic or a hair tie! Easy as that.

Straight Hair:

What hair products do you recommend for someone with straight hair? I recommend the product Biosilk, silk therapy to create shine, smoothness, and to control static. Also to add lift, volume, and shine. I also recommend, it’s a 10, miracle styling cream and, it’s a 10, miracle styling moose, for lift, volume, and shine. You can always use dry shampoo for extra volume and maintain a style for a day longer.

What prom hair styles do you recommend for someone with straight hair? I would tease the hair for volume, which

straight hair typically doesn’t have. I would create large curls, to give the appearance of natural wavy hair. I then would pin half up and spray, because straight hair does not tend to hold style well.

Curly Hair:

What hair products do you recommend for someone with curly hair?

I recommend the product Halo, a curl enhancing creme that doesn’t leave hair stiff, it also keeps your hair curled and defined. You also want to use serums for moisture because curly hair is naturally dry, such as dry shampoo by TRESemme. I also recommend miracle finishing spray by “it’s a 10”.

What is a prom hair style you recommend for someone with curly hair? For prom, I would loosen the curl, and create a low “chignon”(which is a low bun). I would also put have some loose tendrils (pieces of hair around the face) to define the face shape. Depending on the person, I would also accent the hair with a decor (ie. flowers).

Pretty Girly! You a girly type of gal? Well here are three ideas of dresses, accessories, and shoes for your fabulous prom night!

1 A dress like this is more fun and preppy. This is a high-low dress which makes your legs look really long. Also, the layers of the top part and the bottom part of the dress are really flattering to anyone and everyone who wears it. We paired heels that aren’t too high but still cute with this dress, and a simple and elegant necklace to make the whole outfit more fancy.

2 A dress like this is more formal but still really pretty. The flowery pattern is really classy and the high neck line is very elegant. We paired this dress with cute 2 inch healed shoes which adds a flirty side to the dress. And the heart shaped necklace is just a pretty accessory that adds to the whole outfit.

3 This dress, like the first one is very fun but also has an elegant side. The low ‘v’ neck adds a sexy side to the dress too. With a dress like this we recommend pairing high wedges, and a sparkely necklace to add pretty, flirty and sexy accessories.

SEXY This sequined sleek dress is sure to be a show-stopper. We put a pair of nude pumps with the gown. The pop of color comes from the pair of earrings, a cute touch to this outfit.

01

A tight, velvet, plum dress with thick nude heels will amp your figure and is always a perfect combination. Match that with this chunky and sparkly necklace for a complete and sexy look.

02

The ruffled cream frock will turn heads when you walk in with these black open toed shoes. The coral will be a great statement piece, and always looks good with cream. All together? A classic and perfect outfit for prom. 03

ASK HAUTE HELPER Dear Haute Helper, I’m a sophomore and I’ve been in love with this boy for 2 years. He knows and occasionally likes me too but is on and off and just uses me as a back up, always changing his mind before anything serious. I don’t think he actually likes me but it’s been so long I don’t know how to start getting over him. I go to a small school and it’s hard to meet new people. I’m tired of being a plan B and want a boy to chase after me for once. Thanks, LoveSick@16 Dear LoveSick@16, Oh Girl, we have all been there! I bet a small school and constant reminder is difficult. My best advice would really making a conscious effort to meet new people and get your flirt on! At least it will make him see what he is missing and at best get you with a brand new beau. Also if you need some recovery time and a more spiritual way to more on I could suggest a cliched pros and cons list really get into why you like him in the first place. Make a list of non-negotiable aspects of your dream boy. For example, “He has to be the perfect mix of preppy and skater, he has to drink black coffee, he has to paint, he has like obscure bands and bike as his main source of transportation.” Make sure you never go for anyone that doesn’t meet all of these standards. They can be as picky as loose as you chose. It’s a way to not waste your time with anyone not worth it. You got this!

Dear Haute Helper, I know this sounds like an exaggeration but I am the only one, I mean the only one in my group of friends that doesn’t have a boyfriend or is dating anyone. There are a lot of super awkward experiences where I am either the third, fifth, seventh or ninth wheel. Everyone is nice and still invites me to hang out with them but I can tell they don’t know what to do. They all want to be romantic and talk with their dates but don’t want to completely leave me out. It’s super obvious and increasingly more embarrassing. What do I? Can I still hang out with my friends? Should I give them space? Sincerely, 4EverAThirdWheel Dear 4EverAThirdWheel, No! Don’t you know the rules of BFFs. “We will never let boys get in the way of our friendship” Said the girl in every teenage coming over age movie and TV show ever! So my advice, to be sneakily less awkward until you find your own Prince Charming to canoodle with, bring another girl friend you can chat with when everyone else is being couple-y. You can have a friend date instead of being a third wheel. This won’t last long, relationships come and go soon enough another one of your friends will be single and even sooner you won’t be. Have fun!

Dear Haute Helper, I am senior and I just got braces. It really sucks because everyone else just got theirs off. I broke up with my boyfriend about 4 months ago and I feel like I won’t be able to get a new one with a ton of metal in my mouth. My senior pictures are going to be horrible! What can I do? Any advice on how to try to hid them or anything!!! Please please help! -MetalMouth94 Dear MetalMouth94, It’s actually not as hard as you would think have your braces go unnoticed. If you try to not smile with your teeth and “smize” it up, people will be surprised when they realize you actually have them. As for finding a boy, it won’t even be a problem. It was fine in middle school when everyone had them and will be fine now. I mean you’re still the same person you just have more orthodontic work than others. Life will go on. Senior year will end. You will get your braces off. You would look back and laugh at what you looked like in high school whether you had braces or not.

28

Dear Haute Helper, How do you tell how a boy feels about you? There is this boy that is just bluntly and openly mean, like way worse than other boys. But he is also very affectionate and complementing. It is so weird and if it were elementary school I would assume this would mean he likes me but I don’t think so! Does he want to be friends or more or less??? I’m so confused. I need some kind of direction so I don’t do anything to embarrass myself. Please Help. -Mixed$ignals Dear Mixed$ignals, I think you should not try to read into it too much, just let it play out. If he is trying to say he likes you it’s obviously not clear enough. If he wants to really get the message across he is going to have to find another way to say it. As for your feelings, I’d try not to get too attached or think about anything coming out of this weird relationship. Just go with the flow and deal with any feeling appropriately as they arise. Next time he says “You look so gross today.” Respond by saying “Thanks you too!” or something like that. Don’t take it too seriously I’m sure he’s only trying to get a response. It’s a good idea to never let anything someone says hurt you if you can.

Dear Haute Helper, I’m a junior, I like boys but I think I might like girls too. I my last boyfriend was freshman year but since then I think I’ve had crushes on girls. I don’t know what to do because I feel like people have negative connotations about people that are labeled as bisexual. Some people don’t believe it’s even real and I know that if I ever said I was I wouldn’t be able to change my mind without everyone thinking I was faking for attention or something. I want to be myself but don’t think it’s a good idea until after high school at least. Please help, BoysOrGirls1234 Dear BoysOrGirls1234, I hate to say it but I have to agree that unless you find out that another girl wants to date you, it would make the most sense not to really say too much about your sexuality until you don’t have to be around judgmental and mean high schoolers everyday. Once you get to college and you aren’t defined by what you did in your adolescence years. You will be able to date whomever you want and no one will judge you. I’m sorry to have to tell you not to be your full self but you do have really good years ahead. I promise! Best of Luck

Dear Haute Helper, I am going to be a freshman when summer ends, and I just moved to the town live in now Denver, Colorado from across the country Boston, Massachusetts! Going into high school is hard and scary enough, but literally knowing no one is terrifying. I am really shy and it takes me awhile to get to know people and make friends. It is almost time for school to start and I have two friends. Do you have any advice for me about making friends when school starts and not being so shy?? Thank you, 4EverAlone Dear 4EverAlone, Everyone is shy when you first meet them, its not just you. What you need to do is be the person to talk first. Maybe choose a person in every class to go up to and ask questions about the class, the school, the homework, the teacher or stuff like that. That way, you will have someone in each and every one of your classes to talk to. Then once you get to know them better, ask them to introduce you to other people. Hopefully you can then see which group you like hanging out with or if you like just hanging out with a couple people(which is also fine by the way). Take this new school, new people, and new place as an opportunity for fresh start, any bad things that happened in middle school are behind you and you can start over with new friends!

Embarrassing Moments Everyone has those embarrassing moments where we just want to disappear and get out of there! Here are a few we gathered from teenagers who have plenty to tell.

Know-It-All

Pound the Alarm

“I was in my driver’s Ed class the other day and we were talking about depression. The instructor asked our class what medicine helped people with depression, and I blurted out, ‘CHLAMYDIA!’. The entire class started laughing before I realized my mistake.” -Leah, 16

My school has an assembly every week for announcements and performances, and this week I had a solo in the choir show. The curtains opened and I started walking down stage next to the wall and up to the microphone. On the way, I tripped over a music stand and fell down in front of the WHOLE school.” -Eva, 14

Hit the Deck

“This summer my family and I went on a cruise. I was supposed to get to the top deck for dinner and didn’t feel like taking the stairs, so I got on the elevator. When I stepped on, the speakers started blasting music. I started dancing and singing really loud and didn’t hear the elevator ding when it got to the deck. When I finally turned around, there was a crowd of people looking at me waiting for the elevator. I got super red and ran off!” -Alexia, 15

“My friends and I were at the pool and there was this super hot lifeguard. So we went over to the diving board and everyone started jumping off. When it was my turn, I ran and jumped off super high(trying to empress the lifeguard), and when I hit the water, I looked up and saw my bathing suit top floating on the top of the pool. That certainly got the lifeguard’s attention!”

“It was our eighth grade graduation and everyone was lining up to get our diplomas. My dress was super long and I kept tripping over it in my heels, but I eventually got up on stage. My dad was video taping as I walked across the platform and up to the principal. I shook hands with her and took my diploma from the AP, turned around to smile for a picture and tripped on my heels. I went face down and my braces got caught in the carpet!” -Monica, 14

My boyfriend and I were at a party, it was our first date and we were both really nervous. After an hour or so of dancing we went outside to get some air. We sat down on a fence and talked for a while. Finally at the end of our conversation he leaned in to kiss me. Right as we were about to kiss... I fell off the fence! It was probably the most embarrassing moment of my entire life.” -Zoe, 17
