cpu

The CPU, or the central processing unit of a computer, is like the “brain” of a computer. It gets instructions from the random accesss memory, and processes the instructions to where it is sent back to the corresponding address in the memory.

RAM

The RAM or Random Access Memory is a temporary place to store data that the computer needs to access quickly (to process, etc)

Pieces of Motherboard

The motherboard, or the body of the computer connects all the parts of the computer so they can interact with each other, and transmits the electricity through the components.

Storage

The storage (usually separa ted into two categories, SSD and HDD, stores the data you get from the internet on your computer when you download something, or create data.

Circuits and CAD Design in Technology

Abig part of technology is related to circuits, and with technology growing at an extremely fast rate, circuits have to constantly change to keep up. An electronic circuit is a closed loop composed of many minuscule parts which electricity flows through and does its job. Circuits are the backbone of electronics, and they make huge differences in day-to-day life.

Jaydeep Kulkarni, an assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin, in the integrated circuits and power electronics division said that “Circuits are in everything nowadays, from your laptop computer to your house, they’re almost omnipresent nowadays.”

The amount of transistors you can fit on a circuit has increased exponentially from a couple of decades ago where the amount of transistors on a CPU was around 2300, up to the point where a CPU can have up to 5.2 billion transistors on its surface. Even now, circuits are changing rapidly everywhere. Kulkarni said, “Nano and silicon circuits are being improved upon daily, and the biotech industry is where the next innovations are going to be happening.”

When asked, Do you believe there is less interest in integrated circuits right now compared to past decades? Kulkarni says, “ I do think back in the day young people were genuinely interested in integrated circuits because it was such a new topic.” However, Maki, a student studying mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at Dallas, says: “From what I’ve seen, young people are more interested in engineering and technology as a whole because it’s so prominent, and also the allure of competitiveness

to secure these coveted spots [in technology]. But what about a perspective new to the technology scene? When questioned if you feel as though you will use integrated circuits in your career, A freshman at LASA High School, Liam Teltow says,

I don’t think I will use [integrated circuits] for my career, but it might be possible that I use it for internships or other side jobs before I get out of college. ”

CAD Programs

We know the function of circuits, but how do you make these microscopic mechanisms? A CAD program or “Computer Aided Design program” is software where you can design objects on a computer using various tools and features.

From using 2-D vector software to 3-D surface modeling programs, CAD programs are used for designing electronics, towers, and other various creations in day-to-day life. They are one of the most helpful tools for the construction of circuits, which use microscopic transistors and other hard to build parts to operate.

Liam Teltow, a freshman at the Liberal Arts and Science Academy.

CAD programs are a great example of how almost anything can be improved upon, Maki says that:

CAD design is pretty simple as a whole, but what they are revolutionizing in CAD design is the speed at which you can develop and draw things in the program. Back in the early days of CAD, you would have to define a circle using the algebraic equation for it, but now you can just say “I want a circle here”, and boom, it’s there.

The Future of CAD Design

CAD design has been used extensively on land and sea, but what’s next? The future of CAD design could go down several paths because CAD design is ubiquitous, but Maki claims that the future of CAD design and jobs revolving around CAD design is going to skyrocket.

“Spaceflight, that’s where humanity is going next, and that’s just the next step, there are so many possibilities in space for rockets, rovers, machines, and cool gadgets, and CAD design is always a huge part of establishing how to make those.”- Maki.

A current example of CAD being used is for spacecraft at NASA. NASA uses a variety of CAD programs and skilled designers to fabricate the layout of models and projects. They also have to consider the external variables, like the atmosphere when designing objects which are leaving the Earth.

Another example is the CAD program, SOLIDWORKS, being used for many various different purposes in space. SOLIDWORKS is used by many companies to design and model designs of spacecraft, and to do more, like visualize the conditions in which a spacecraft might need to be in for it work properly.

Circuits and CAD design are some of the key factors in how technology operates today, and will continue to advance and progress as time goes on in ways we may not have ever imagined.

The work experiance of Story Stone.

Application development, A truly unrecognized but popular field, has been a very recent update to what we do with software,! From setting an alarm for the morning, to sending texts and scrolling through your favorite social medias, apps have added so much to our modern world. Women and men of all ages work through many different stages to develop some of your favorite social media apps, to do lists, games, and many others. Story stone, an app and website developer with over 20 years of experience, knew she loved software development way back in middle school. While tagging along with the technically inclined kids, she found something that would later become her career, after taking more interest in highschool and college.

Though encountering some struggles through college at southern Methodist university due to sexism and descrimination for women in tech. and Stone has encountered this first hand. She says You can only imagine Her disappointment to see that some of the smartest and influential people in her department were afflicted with sexism. . In some cases, unwilling to hire women for certain positions.

She found herself inspired by ada lovelace, one of the biggest contributors to what has now turned into software engineering. A female who, about a century before Konrad Zuse, designed the first programmable computing machine.

Lovelace is a deeply undercredited woman in the industry, a great inspiration to many girls in tech, and a large motivation to stone. And though university wasn’t as easy as it was for others, she made her way through her studies and learned a lot more than how to develop apps. Through her experience she discovered that some things you have to figure out on your own. Such as Debugging, the process of finding and resolving bugs within computer programs and Stone believes it doesn’t get as much coverage as it should.

But she also was able to have quite a lot of amazing experiences . One which she’s working on right now, which is an app that will do

competitions and hunting. She continues to get accustomed to a lot of technology integration like Bluetooth connections with distance measurements and many things that she otherwise wouldn’t haveKnown. She mostly focuses s on design and accessibility in her team and believes her job is truly amazing because of the amount of different kinds of apps she can work on and the wide range of things she learns. For example, have you ever heard of Sprinkles Cupcakes? Because Stone did some work for this project as her team was developing their website .

She’s a talented developer with many other projects, such as deep underwater fishing apps.

Though it takes a large team, every job is equally as hard and important.

Figares from the company “moove it” had a completely different experience. . Figares spends most of his time writing code, coordination tasks, onboarding in new technologies, and helping others to onboard in things he’s familiar with., . An amazing quality he has learned through his career is being able to to the full process focused on qualityand works hard to ensure it generally makes the process of developing an app way easier ultimately

Makes it quite a lot better for the users and final application. MooveIT! works on a lot of different projects big and small They do most of their programming work with JavaScript and TypeScript. When Figares first joined Move It the beginning couple of months consisted of a personalized onboarding process to help him solidify his knowledge in every area With the help of senior developers

Working with him on a daily basis. Then he got to join the marketing and communication team, and later work on a couple of different projects. through all this, he learned that even his biology degree helps with his IT carrier.

It’s a very diverse field and he is able to combine things he loves and learn even more in the process. though their focus stands more on web development and single-page applications (SPAs for short). Something else that Figares mentions a lot and should be known as public knowledge which was both stated by Stone and Figares is that Software, in general, helps us work repetitive tasks, connect and help us in ways that without tech wouldn’t be possible. and though he thinks it’s a great field, he would definitely say

figares has this formulated opineon on software development that whoever you are, wherever you are from and where ever you are going software can helo you acheive those goals, and being part of making it happpen has made him incredibly happy.

Figares going into a book camp in the same company he was later offered to work in took him on a sort of roller coaster to what has turned out to be a wonderful carrier. And even then who wouldn’t want to do this ?! figares talks about how the whole internet is based on software development, a lot of education to this day as we know it comes in the form of apps or websites making it possible for every other person to go and be able to access tonnes of information through couple clicks and the work of wonderful people like Stone and FIgares. Application and web development is A bright improvement to our society that is quite important to the modern world. Made by people like this, that make it accessible and fun, and easily usable for every one of us on a daily basis.

Effects of Social Media Platforms

DDo you spend excessive amounts of time on social media? How much do you think it affects you? It’s probably more than you think! A couple of UT professors want to inform you about the potential dangers.

Keri Stephens, who teaches various communication classes at UT Austin, including Organizational Communication, which is a class discussing issues such as the

negative rise of artificial intelligence and how big companies utilize both artificial intelligence for job interviews. Stephens graduated from UT with an undergraduate degree in Biochemistry, and after being in industry for 10 years, a Ph.D. She enjoys researching social media and communication because of how quickly one message can travel and reach thousands of people. Social media may seem bad at times, but it

Social Media

can also be used for good.

Stephens shared a shocking case about a retirement home underwater: “This case was dreadful because there were all of these older

most and that posts like this one can help save people’s lives in dangerous or unsafe situations. There are many people who ask for assistance on social media, and Stephens noted that while doing so does help them receive instant help, they frequently regret sharing personal information, like their address.

Social media is one of the biggest distractions for students and is used by most people to be unproductive and waste time. In addition to suggesting users to eliminate distracting apps and some social media, Stephens emphasized the need of customizing notifications. “People have to become very disciplined with what apps they choose to put on their phone and how they choose to get notified by certain apps”.

I really like how it helps and in faster situations how one person can post about their individual situation and (you can share the information, you can go viral), you can Network these messages to a point where one share can reach thousands of people and it just I just think that it opens the door to opportunities for people to communicate that you never have had before

negative effects of using social media. People all around the world can communicate, by just clicking a couple of buttons. Companies are able to advertise and communicate effortlessly

with consumers. Bright mentioned how social media affects teenagers and young kids, “ Your generation is constantly immersed in those [social media] channels, this will have some impact on their mental health.” Even though

social media is beneficial, it can cause social media fatigue and attention issues that can later lead to an increase in anxiety and depression.

Although the impacts are already apparent, it seems like people are becoming more conscious of the time they spend online.“People are more mindful about what information they’re putting out there because of privacy concerns.” Users are becoming so aware that they notice when companies are using alternative selling methods, an example is AI influencers. You may have noticed them on your YouTube or Instagram feed; while most people find them intriguing they are also slightly concerned by how lifelike they seem. Consumers usually get a feeling

called “uncanny- valley”, this feeling is when an object is very human-like

These professors’ research proves that unrestricted social media use can change people’s opinions and affect their mental health. While social media can be used for positive things, it can also be detrimental.

TECH GIANTS

From getting your packag es delivered to your house, to searching on the web every day, major tech companies control the world and will guide us into the future. On June 29, 2007, the stage was set for the biggest release in the tech world since the creation of the computer. Steve Jobs took the

of the first-ever smartphone, the iPhone. 15 years later, companies now fight to release the next generational product to shake the industry. “How about Bill Gates? Gates was al-

21

hile some companies were competing for the top spot in the tech hardware world, others decided to turn their focus online. For example, Jeff Bezos founded Amazon knowing that the online world was growing at an immense rate of 2300%. He capitalized on the opportunity and created the largest growing tech company in the last ten years. Similar to Bezos is Mark Zuckerberg, owner of Meta, which is a collection of

multiple apps including Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, and Portal. Zuckerberg’s knowledge of coding and ideas from his roommates led to him creating two of the most popular apps to ever be on a phone.

that drivers will never get into accidents, and will ultimately have their cars replace human drivers. This was a great leap in the future of technology but it doesn’t stop there.

Now, companies are expanding their horizons, from once being limited to staying online to now cars, planes, in-house helpers, and robots!

“Im loyal to Apple because Apple has never let me down yet. They have always made reliable electronics that keep me loyal to them.

Tesla is a popular company known for manufacturing electric cars with fully functioning autopilot. When Tesla first launched, it was thought to be impossible for a car to be fully automatic and need no user input. Tesla sold consumers on the idea

Amazon released Alexa, which is a household helper who, with a simple indication, will answer whatever questions you have. Alexa was a big gamble ut became a massive hit and is now in 25% of homes in the United States. These massive expansions companies have made, have continued to benefit lives and keep furthering tech companies’ success.

Now the question is: How do you maintain the best and biggest company? Aman Saluja, a car chip manufacturer for NXP said, “NXP has kept great

This is how companies retain customers and stay atop the competition.

We know how these companies have become very successful, but what does it take to be the most success-

ful? When discussing the intricacies of the machine of the major tech company Amazon, Harshita Shastri said “Think of Amazon as, like a well, there are two sides to Amazon. One is like the core Amazon business where you have an Amazon platform and people can buy products on their website, and then the other is Amazon Web Services where they are basically selling cloud services to their clients, so my role specifically is supporting

the website services portion of it.”

Because of Amazon’s size and complexity, it has a pyramid-like structure where workers report to a manager, and that manager reports to an executive, all the

way until it gets to the CEO.

All these companies started with one person’s passion and idea, now they have over 1,000,000+ people working for them to better of their buisness. Tech companies are paving the way for the next generation of innovation in the world and we must follow their guide into the future.

Technology is growing at an incredible pace. Where is it taking us?

Technology is advancing at an ever-increasing pace, and it isn’t just scientists in laboratories, or programmers in dark rooms doing all of the work. There are many places where technology is being implemented to work towards a better future.

“ ”

It doesn’t put anybody in a position of feeling threatened, so they can make a decision together and hopefully can change behavior.

High-Tech Health

One of the places that technology is lifting off is in the health field. Erin Hudson is a Ph.D. student at the University of Texas at Austin, studying nutritional sciences. She and her team are developing an app called Nutri. Nutri utilizes data entered by the user regarding their diet. It then uses an algorithm to determine the quality of the diet and provides the doctor with suggestions to improve the patient’s

nutrition. This allows for a conversation between the patient and doctor regarding dietary needs and changes.

Hudson said that “It allows doctors to have a conversation about nutrition with their patient in a way that’s organic. It doesn’t put anybody in a position of feeling threatened, so they can make a decision together and hopefully can change behavior.” Her team wants to expand the app’s reach so it can support underserved communities and be widely implemented in clinics.

Madalyn Rosenthal is another Ph.D student working on Nutri. She helped develop the app itself and has monitored

clinical trials. She spoke about the challenges of trying to implement Nutri in the clinic: “You may have an IT product or tool that works super well in testing, and certain things just don’t go as expected in the clinic.” Rosenthal also said that trying to determine what information was necessary for the provider was also difficult: “I think the hardest thing was trying to boil down exactly what we were trying to do with providers and find the sweet spot of information of what they wanted versus what we thought was

appropriate to give them.” Hudson also commented that there are challenges trying to implement the technology into clinics, along with trying to persuade people in the community to use the app. “There is a lack of trust on the part of the patient with the doctor talking to them about nutrition,” Hudson said. “It can be a sensitive area talking about what you eat, especially in certain communities that have less trust in doctors than others. If you’ve had experiences where doctors talk to you about your weight in ways that were not helpful, there can be a lack of trust there. There is also a lack of trust among doctors about the technology. There is also a lack of trust among doctors about the technology. They

feel like what they’re doing works, and they don’t need technology to assist them.”

tech side

You may have an IT product or tool that works super well in testing, and certain things just don’t go as expected in the clinic.

“ ”

However, both Rosenthal and Hudson are hopeful that their app will help many people, and they both continue to work on and perfect the technology.

Nutri is currently in pilot testing at healthcare facilities in and around Austin.

The Quantum Computer Craze

Also gaining attention in the tech industry is quantum computing. A quantum computer is a specialized kind of computer designed to solve certain kinds of complex

problems regarding quantum physics, or how physics behaves on a very small scale. Unlike a classical computer, which operates by using bits that either hold a 1 or a 0 to do calculations, a quantum bit, or qubit, can hold a 1, a 0, or both at the same time. It can do this since qubits must be held in superposition, a quantum state that allows a molecule to behave in

29
A quantum computer mixing chamber. These are used in the creation of qubits. (Photo by IBM Research)

two different ways at the same time. Scientists use this property to make calculations that would take classical computers much longer to solve. Although quantum computers are some of the most advanced bits of technology our generation has, there are several downsides to their utility, and it is unlikely that they will be used as a substitute for classical computers.

Scott Aaronson is a professor at the University of Texas at Austin studying quantum computing and computer science. Aaronson says, “it [isn’t] obvious that [quantum computing] would really help for anything at all other than simulating quantum mechanics itself. That was the original application that Richard Feynman had in mind when he first proposed the idea of a quantum computer about 40 years ago. And, the truth is that

[simulating quantum mechanics] is still the most important application that we know about.” Quantum computers also struggle when it comes to practical use due to how specialized they are. They are often expensive, and once qubits are created, they are very fragile and hard to maintain. Additionally, due to how uncommon they are, it is a challenge trying to sell quantum computers; no one wants to buy something that will do the job marginally better than their classical computer. “It’s not enough for a quantum computer to

do something interesting,” Aaronson said.” “It has to beat the best that can be done with a classical computer.”

More and more fields are now becoming increasingly reliant on technology. As we continue to progress and improve upon what we have created, we will advance further in what we can accomplish.

Kirtan Amin is the self-proclaimed team leader of this group and, like his fellow teammates, did 100% of the work for this magazine. In his free time, he enjoys playing video games, playing football, and going outside. If he graduates, Kirtan wants to go to Stanford or the University of Texas at Austin to study business and economics. Kirtan considers his strengths to be knowing things and being able to articulate these grandiose ideas. To quote the man himself, “I’m better.”

Arun Varadarajan is a valuable member of the group and a great teammate. He enjoys playing the piano because he thinks of it as “playing an entire orchestra with his fingers”. His other passion is playing the game Apex Legends because it is very entertaining. Arun also claims to have carried the group.. When Arun graduates he will apply for his dream school, the University of Texas at Austin and major in electronics.

Xander Kercher is the actual team leader and the group's MVP, combined with a comical personality. Kate Bondar is the wildcard of our group. She wrote about app development and thinks that it's really interesting. Kate hopes to go to college, get a degree in the science field and maybe even get a part time job. She enjoys drawing, taking care of animals and likes school as well as learning. Kate is proud of her Ukrainian heritage, “A lot of people know this is, but I'm from the Ukraine just like the rest of my family”. She also mentioned that she did 100% of the work, and is the group leader.

Brittany Martinez Olivares is a very kind, and creative part of this group. She loves all music related things like CD’s, vinyls and going to concerts. She is planning to pursue a career in the science field and would want to go to the University of Texas at Austin. She took on a vital part of this magazine by talking about the effects technology makes on us, how tech affects us by taking surveys and analyzing the results. Most of this magazine would be on nerdy things like software and hardware so by adding another perspective of how it really interacts with society, she diversified this magazine.
