Is Selena Gomez In Danger What would you do if a 46 year old man was after you? By: Amber Jaycox
elena Gomez Disney channel starlet is being threatened. What? Well it’s true and this time the threats are not coming from all of those hormonal Justin Biber loving fans but it’s an actual threat from a 46 year old man. Now what would a 46 year old man want with a Teenage super star for teens well you tell me. Apparently this guy has some serious mental health issues that clearly need to be resolved for Selena’s shake. Just days ago Ms. Gomez filed a restraining order against this psycho and he is now required to stay at least one hundred yards away from Selena and her work place until the hearing / court session on November 6th for further notice and ruling.
“He Prayed to God About Killing Her.” Now I can only imagine how scared that poor girl must be. I mean first the crazy Biber fans and now this. I mean the Biber fans were nothing serious just bark but no bite. But a 46 year old man who should have nothing against her now that’s scary.
TG6
But these psycho have their ways so may our prays be with Selena in this time and may God protect her and let no harm come to her. Even then I cannot blame her for being scared this man has had a very odd and mental issued life and who knows what he is capable of doing. Let’s hope not too much for Selena Gomez is a huge role model, talented actress and singer, and loved by all. She is super sweet, kind hearted caring, and has done nothing wrong so why this man has hatred towards her is a mystery to the eye can see. So until the next court hearing for further ruling lets all pray for her safety. § Selena Gomez at Kids Teen Choice Awards 2010
S
And what’s really messed up and makes it even more scary is that Selena Gomez is named after the past Selena who was a Latina singer who was shot and killed by her friend many years ago who once more no one would have expected to happen. The good news’s about this case though is that Selena is being threatened by this man and it is known to the public so that people will be on the lookout and Ms. Gomez can have extra protection. Unlike in the other Selena case were no one would have expected Selena’s friend to kill her.
Luck of the Drawer Parents Should Not Expect Celebrities To Be Role Models By: Maria Palomo
Y
ou might think of Miley Cyrus when someone asks who is not a good role model but have you ever stopped and think that she is just a teen? The celebrities “kids” look up to are young and are experimenting who they are through their music, and or their acting career. To judge them at such a young age is not right. What were you doing at their age? You probably weren’t in airplanes flying all around the world doing what you loved in front of millions of people but I can say that you weren’t in your room doing nothing. You had your low points, but it’s okay because I am 100% sure that everybody has had them. Parents, please don’t expect celebrities to be role models. Celebrities are rich, and they have everything we wished we did. Most of them are under the age of 25 and can you not expect that they will mess up and make a mistake that will be the talk of the news and headlines? Of course you can, so stop being so vain about it and accept that not all people your kids aspire to be will be
Not all celebrities are bad. Some celebrities realize they wouldn’t be where there at if it weren’t for their fans. Lady Gaga is always on the news because her clothes are different than what everybody wears. Everybody’s reaction to her is “She’s so crazy!” and “Why would she wear that?!” Parents don’t want their kids to be like her because they are fooled by her appearance but they haven’t seen all the good qualities she has. In her March 27, 2011 article “Lady Gaga, Fame Monster or Positive Role Model?” blogger Elizabeth writes “The reality is that she is one of the most modern teen influences today, so parents need to understand some of her influential messages as well as choose to
focus on her positive actions.” What she’s saying is that kids love Lady Gaga, and they will keep listening to her music and keep up with her. It shouldn’t matter how she expresses herself just look at her messages she gives through her music. Her song “We Were Born This Way” is an example of Lady Gaga’s great messages. It talks about how no matter what sexuality, color, or gender you are you shouldn’t be ashamed of it because you Were Born That Way. Madonna was also judged by her appearances but she inspired people, in a March 2004 “How Have Celebrities Inspired Us” blog founder of Spanx Inc. Blakely
TG7
said “I remembered reading stories about Madonna believing in herself when no one else did. I believed in my idea [for footless pantyhose] and knew it was up to me to make my product a reality.” Parents want the TV, and newspaper headlines to change because they feel their children are have bad “role models”. They need to stop being naive and know media stories will never change. In her blog “Teens and Role Models” Julie had a user comment saying “I think parents need to confirm these people as bad role models and the media should be made to be more responsible about what they are making news, to end the perpetual degradation of the level socially accepted mentally and responsibly mature.” Will the media change because of what parents say? The answer is no and they never will. Raven Simon speaking to teens about body image and Brittney Snow who has her “Love Is Louder” foundation to help teens get suicidal thoughts out of their minds, are great examples and proof my point that celebrities are not all bad. Media story lines will never change because you have shows and websites like Tosh.O and TMZ that attack celebrities all the time.
TG8
In her blog “Celebrity Role Models” Terri Brown says “It’s important that parents limit their child’s exposure and use teachable moments to discuss possible life lessons on eating disorders, underage drinking, drug use, etc. Take advantage of teachable moments to point out celebrities’ flaws and the fallout they are experiencing as a result of their poor choices (usually caught on camera).” Her point of view states that parents should have more control of what their children watch because celebrities won’t and don’t have to change their way of being. Parents should use teen celebrities’ mistakes as teachable moments. Celebrities are teens, and teens make a lot of mistakes. In her blog “Celebrity Role Models” Terri states “The problem with teen role models is that they are just teens and capable of making horrendous mistakes.”
Every teen has made a mistake and everybody was once a teen so you can’t blame them just because they are in a spotlight. It’s not fair to judge them because they are young and are in a world where everything you do will be a new headline for a newspaper. In her “Celebrities As Role Models: Yes or No?” blog Amanda writes “... it’s unfair to ask people to change who they are simply because young people are impressionable...” Young people are young and they want someone to look up to and celebrities shouldn’t be asked to change because of kids. Celebrities should not be held up as role models, just because they are in the spotlight. Everybody has a different way to express themselves. Take a deep breath and relax. It’s life.

like, talk alike, and walk alike. However, when people obsess over other’s qualities, they tend to take things to the extreme and they can soon develop possible disorders as well. To become a few sizes smaller people go as far as starving themselves, avoiding high calorie foods, exercising multiple times a day, eating huge meals and throwing up, and even taking laxatives. These cruel and unhealthy methods people do to lose weight can harm your body severely and this will lead to issues that affect your long term health. You only have one life, body, and mind; wrecking these key items will make the rest of your life miserable. Season one of the hit T.V. series “Intervention”, showed a thirtyfour year old woman named Kim and her struggles to change her eating habits and become healthy again. Kim had a bad childhood; her father was abusive to her siblings and towards her mother. Once her mother divorced her father, at the age of three Kim became clingy and jealous of her siblings. Three years later when Kim’s Mother got remarried, she
became filled with hatred towards her Step-Father because she felt he was a threat to her. Growing up Kim felt like she couldn’t fit in at home, when she was at school she wanted to change her image. Kim use to be a beautiful cheerleader, popular, and the guys were falling for her left and right. At the age of sixteen she’d gained ten pounds and felt “fat.” For Kim to feel beautiful she needed to become skinnier than before, she did this by exercising multiple times throughout the day, threw up on a regular basis, and swal-
An Anorexic Model
P
eople all over the world think skinniness holds the key to beauty, but sometimes skinniness leads to eating disorders. When some people start to obsess over weight and appearance they start to count calories, throw up meals, and work out many times a day. But, whatever happened to true beauty? Beauty’s not about how skinny, heavy, or pretty you are; the beauty that counts the most is the beauty that comes from within you. That probably sounded a bit cliché, but it’s true. I believe that females and males across the globe need to gain self-esteem/ confidence; we can do this if our society becomes more accepting and less judgmental of weight and the appearance of others. The blogger, Anorexic Heroin Chick suggests that citizens of the world want to be as successful and “happy” as the models and celebrities we see in magazines/ T.V. But, what we don’t realize that a great percentage of models and celebrities have anorexia, eating disorders, or mental instabilities. People who look up to these “role-models” want to look

lowed up to 30 laxatives a day. At nineteen years old she weighed only ninety pounds, by the age of twenty she became reunited with her High School Sweetheart and soon after they tied the knot. At first he was very helpful with her disorder, but as time passed she became too needy. This became too much for him to handle, so he dropped her off back to her parents’ house, with no intentions of coming back. Now, as a grown woman she’s needier than ever, jealous, emotional, and she’s in need of her family’s love and support. Since she is disgusted with her body image she starves herself up to three days at a time, and when she eats she only drinks water and eats a protein bar. Whenever she eats something other than her usual she will then go on a food binge. “I am the most worthless, dumbest, waste of space that ever existed,” Kimsobs becoming more disgusted with herself. So, she decided to purge, cut herself, and committed suicidal acts. When she arrived at the pre-intervention session, her family told her how they felt about her situation and if she decided not to accept their help there would be no place left for her in their homes. At first Kim was reluctant; she began to cry and told her family she would only go if she saw her dog. Finally, once

Makeup Your Mind!!! How Would You Like Your Skin? By: Cristal Garcia Lamas
C
aroline woke up one morning and looked at herself in the mirror. She noticed that wrinkles and that big bags appeared under her eyes. Her lips were washed out and it seemed like there was never any eyelashes. She asked herself what happened since just yesterday she wore makeup and she looked absolutely beautiful. She realized that this has happened for years now, not just last night. She looked at herself and broke down crying. Makeup isn’t always fabulous, wearing makeup is BAD for you. Makeup is bad for you because it can cause wrinkles, cancer and it’s not approved by the FDA.
“let your skin breath, let people see the real you, because YOU are beautiful.” Makeup creates wrinkles in the skin. For example, if you’re applying eyeliner on the top lid and you tug on your eye and you apply that eyeliner everyday, you slowly get premature wrinkles in your eye. Besides smiling and getting natural wrinkles from old age, you also get wrinkles from your makeup. Some foundations or face makeups don’t contain any SPF for your skin so
when you wear it everyday but you have no protection from the sun, so that causes you to get sun burned and get wrinkles. As I read an article by Elizabeth Ruth called “How Makeup Causes Wrinkles and What To Do To Prevent Them” I understood exactly how wrinkles are created by makeup. She said “Ingredients used in these liquid foundations are big contributing factors in wrinkle formation.” She explained how makeup clogs your pores, giving you blemishes which break down collagen. When collagen is broken down wrinkles are formed. If you DO have wrinkles and you wear foundation then you’re just helping exaggerate your wrinkles. You’re making them more obvious. Makeup is not like a food product, it’s not approved by the FDA. If you go to the FDA website, www. fda.gov, you will see that they don’t approve cosmetics such as makeup, perfumes and moisturizers which is what a girl uses on a everyday basis. The only thing the FDA is approving is color additives for makeup. FDA expects that cosmetics have to be safe for their use. That means they are not looking at the ingredients that go into makeup. Without knowing the ingredients any creator of a makeup product can put any gross ingredient in there. Imagine, you’re applying all those unknown
disgusting chemicals to your face everyday. Without the FDA approving makeup of course it can cause cancer. I read an article online on healthy-communications.com and it listed the possible cancer causing chemicals in your cosmetics. Makeup contains certain chemicals that can cause cancer in your skin or your body. Cocoamide is an example of a cancer causing chemical found in cosmetics, not just makeup but moisturizers and lotions.
This picture is from donnarence’s blog on blogspot.com. This picutre shows how many makeup products a girl can can use. In each little cubby atleast one product is used.
TG13
Remember, it would be better to use organic makeup from organic brands like Afterglow Cosmetics and Physician Formula on your skin because its healthier and better for your skin.Your skin quickly absorbs this chemical and your blood cells take it to your some of your organs like the liver and the kidney. Using makeup
with that chemical can cause Liver or Kidney disease. Makeup isn’t healthy for you in so many ways, sometimes its just a matter of you using it properly. It’s not approved by the FDA, can give you wrinkles, and even worse, it can cause cancer. It’s okay to wear makeup, just don’t over do it because then when you don’t wear it,

you might give people a big scare. If you really care about your skin and your health, make sure every product you use is safe, free from any cancer causing chemical. Enjoy yourself without makeup, let your skin breath, let people see the real you, because YOU are beautiful.§

.S. laws do not require scientists to report how many mice, rats, or birds they use, according to dosomething. org, a site that encourages teenagers to get involved with different causes. The site also predicts that half a million animals could have been used in research in 2002. That means half a million rats, rabbits, and frogs suffer from irritating skin, blindness, deformities, and euthanasia. I believe that animal testing is necessary for cures and treatments, but they should find another way to test cosmetics, because more animals than necessary are dying.
“They usually receive no anesthesia during the tests.”
According to Mercyforanimals. org when they test on animals they clip they’re lids open, and some even brake they’re necks as they struggle to escape. Girl Your Amazing Just the way you are The Fuss About Airbrush By: Amber Jaycox
S
uper models and celebrities are just all so beautiful and flawless. I mean just look at how beautiful they look in the magazines so flawless, so skinny, and just plain beautiful. They must exercise for hours and surely they have perfect genes to be so pretty, right? Wrong most of what you see in magazines and TV are all fake. Those aren’t real people. They don’t really look like that. Putting too much make-up on models and retouching their photos to make them look flawless is lowering girls self esteem and making them feel ugly.
Even though the people in those magazine photos don’t really look like that in real life the readers are brought to believe that they look that way in real life and then they want to be as pretty as the person they see in that photo which is an unrealistic goal.(according to diet blog run by nutritious dietitian Jim F. roans that ) Everybody should know or already be aware that companies retouch there photos to make the models look flawless. But even if you already know that they are photo shopped and retouch does not mean that you are not going to want to look like that.
And even though we should know that the people in those photos don’t really look like that we don’t see the original photos we only see the retouched ones so were not really thinking about how the photos are retouched and the models don’t really look like that when were actually reading the magazine. But that we should always keep that in mind when we are reading beauty magazines. “We may be aware of retouching, but that doesn’t mean we are immune to the subtle feeling of self-loathing that may result from seeing these images every day of our lives.
“ This lowers self-confidence and self-esteem” It makes girls who see the retouched photos in the magazines want to look like the people and models they see and they feel ugly by comparison.
This is a photo of Talyor Swift with and with out makeup
TG19
It’s time to stop thinking “I wish I looked like that”. It’s time to start saying “Gee that retouch job is a bit overdone” Just seeing all of these prettier people retouched or not and how they get everything of course were going to want to look like them and feel bad and ugly about our self ’s because real people just don’t look like that but were not thinking about that when we’re looking at the photo all were thinking about is how we wish we were them. (according to beauty tips online)“As if being a teen isn’t tough enough, health and beauty magazines are filled with airbrushed images of thin and beautiful, young women.
“airbrushed images of thin and beautiful, young women.” Society would have you believe that all teens and women look flawless and picture-perfect. But is that realistic? What happened to “real people” and where do ordinary girls fit in? How can this not have an affect on your self-esteem if you’re a teen, or even a grown woman?” It cause’s young girls who want to look like the people they see in the magazines to hurt them self ’s by throwing up so they can look that skinny. Because when they retouch photos they make the models look impossibly skinny. So skinny that no human being can possibly achieve it and still be alive today. photo shop.
TG20
They do this by using photo shop. (According to computer sight software Sharifa Mc Farlan claims that) Company’s photo shop and retouch photos to make the models look skinner, taller, and so on. They sometimes retouch the photos so much that they don’t even look like the same people the photo was taken of. And when the photo is used to advertise a product they retouch the photos to make it look like the makeup is making the model look like that by adding or extending eyelashes making lips fuller, eyes wider, skin smoother, noise different, and anything they can do to basically make the models look like they’re made of plastic like Barbie dolls. “Images are often modified to make already slim models look even slimmer. Photoshop and similar photo editing programs and graphics software can be used to give the model in a picture higher cheekbones, change the arch of their eyebrows, and change their body shape and more. Lawmakers are worried that these kinds of ads may be putting additional pressure on young girls, further damaging their self esteem with fantasy images. Airbrushed images creep into the subconscious and present consumers of all ages with unrealistic standards which cannot be achieved.” Also if they so willingly throw up to try to look as skinny as the girls they see in the magazines they are also capable of doing other things to look like the people they see in photos.
Like stealing make-up, spending their parent’s money for facials, getting plastic surgery’s, stealing expensive clothes cause they thin there cute and have seen them on models. And anything else that could get them in trouble with the law. Lord knows what extent they might go to in order to feel pretty and excepted by society and make them feel like their super models. (According to shine. yahoo Common Sense states that)The media is convincing young girls that they are ugly. Maybe not directly but when they see all of those super skinny super gorgeous actress, actors, models, singers they want to look like them because they look up to them when they watch them on T.V, listen to them on the radio, or see their photos in magazines they are saying to themselves how lucky they are and how they want to be like them and with that they decide they need to look like them too.“Heidi Montag. Britney Spears. Kim Kardashian. These are the voices in the body-image conversation. But the one that matters is yours. Self-worth shouldn‘t be determined by what they see on TV or in a magazine.Read any fashion magazine or watch any music video and you’ll know that media is not kind to girls. The expectations for appearance are wildly unrealistic, and many girls quickly decide they’re not thin, pretty, or sexy enough.
Television and movie stars showcase unrealistic body types that most girls can’t copy without hurting themselves. Online how-to sites that teach girls about being anorexic or bulimic can be easily found. Girls look to the media for role models and when they compare themselves, they necessarily come up short. This lowers self-confidence and self-esteem at a time, developmentally, when kids are vulnerable anyway.” When they retouch photos it is lying to the public to increase the company’s profit from that product by making the public think that they can look like the girl they see in the picture. When they can’t because not even the models themselves can look that way. They have to be covered with make-up or airbrushed by professionals and edited in Photo shop.
“digitally altered to make their skin appear even more flawless” (According to daily mail Sean Poulter states that) Some advertisements are retouch to increase the company of those products profits or income. They retouch the photos of the product to make it seem like it makes it easy for ordinary people to look flawless and like super models. In other words it gives a misleading perception of what the product actually does. “The complaints were brought by Lib-Dem MP Jo Swinson, who argued that airbrushing creates a false impression of beauty.
She claims the results put pressure on women and young girls who compare themselves unfavorably to the unrealistic images. She welcomed the ban, saying: ‘This ruling demonstrates that the advertising regulator is acknowledging the dishonest and misleading nature of excessive retouching. ‘Pictures of flawless skin and super-slim bodies are all around, but they don’t reflect reality. ‘With one in four people feeling depressed about their body, it’s time to consider how these idealized images are distorting our idea of beauty.” It causes the company’s to make tons of money when their product doesn’t even work or at least not as well as they advertise or implied. Which is unfair and deceiving. (According to huardian.co.uk Mark Sweney states that). “In its ruling, the ASA said that it considered that the postproduction retouching of the original ad, specifically in the eye area, could give consumers a “misleading impression of the
effect the product could achieve”. A combination of the retouching and the language of the ad was likely to mislead consumers, it ruled.” (According to shine. yahoo Common Sense states that) “In some magazines, when a product, for example mascara, is advertised, the magazines will go as far as to request that skilled artists copy individual lashes in the mascara ads, making the lashes of the model in the ad appear fuller than would be possible with just the product that is being advertised Politicians in some countries, such as Britain have thought of banning airbrushed images.” People who are against me are saying that the company’s of these products have to retouch the photos because nobody is picture perfect naturally and they have to look that way to advertise the make-up that’s suppose to make you look pretty, younger, and flawless otherwise the product won’t sell.
Picture of a model being retouched
TG21
(According to ehow Jennifer Lott, eHow Contributor states that) “Retouching images, while controversial, does offer benefits to the advertiser. No one’s skin is crystal clear--when advertising a cosmetic product, retouching an image can create the look of flawlessness. Retouching can make a model’s hair glossier for a shampoo ad or a model thinner for a clothing ad all these manipulations are done to try to get a consumer to purchase the advertised product.” I believe that magazines and advertisements should not be allowed to retouch photos because it does make girls feel bad about themselves.
Also the people you see in the media are often young girls role models who look up to them and want to be just like them and when they can’t look the way that
their favorite person does that makes them feel like they’re never going to be any good if they can’t look and be like the person they admire so much. §
Photo of Olivia Wild before and after retouching
Increase the sale of that product in an unfair manner in which the advertisement is promising or promoting something that is not realistic or an accurate prospection of what that product really does or how it really works. It causes girls who want to look like that to hurt themselves because it makes them feel fat and ugly because the person they see in the magazine is so beautiful and they have everything which makes the reader think that you have to be beautiful to be successful.

On the crème couch sat Sheila Whiteley; wearing brown Kensie Girl boots, chocolate and cream skirt, and a chocolate V-neck sweater. “I think we put too much emphasis on stuff and I think that we give stuff too much power in life,” Sheila said. Who really needs name brands to be beautiful? Many people think that they have to follow the new fashion trends and new hairstyles to have beauty, but not Sheila. Sheila believes strongly in having clothes that not only look good, but clothes that make her feel electrifying. “It’s pointless to waste money on name brands when you can find better clothes that look just as great for less,” Sheila said. Sheila was born on August 27th, 1962 in Lubbock, TX and was the

third of six children. Sheila was raised with discipline, and knew that she had to respect her elders and if she didn’t she would get a spanking from her parents. She lived in a small close knit town – so everyone knew everybody’s kids- if someone got in trouble the whole town knew. Friends stayed friends, and even though they occasionally fought –parents knew not to get involved- they’d “kiss and makeup” the next day. Back in Sheila’s day when parents said something, they meant it. “I see parents now-a-days in stores saying if you’re good I’ll buy you this and that. I wished we could act like that back then, you don’t bargain with kids especially with what they are supposed to do anyway,” Sheila said. During Sheila’s childhood kids didn’t necessarily act like they’re grown like we do now. Back then when kids thought they were grown they’d smoke a cigarette and some would smoke marijuana or drink. However there were no teenage drug dealers, unlike today. During holidays like Halloween or any day of that matter Sheila and other members of the close knit
community would be able to stay out till midnight trick-or-treating without the fear of being kidnaped. When Christmas came around the corner Sheila and her five other siblings became overjoyed not just because of their few presents, but because their stockings were filled with fruit, candy, and ribbon candy. Sheila lived in Texas from ‘62- ‘78. In the winter of ‘78 Sheila moved to Colorado Springs and later gave birth to Jullian Whiteley on May 12th 1978 at sixteen years old. In Colorado Springs Sheila bought a three story house; the first level of Sheila’s home was a mock-apartment which she let Jullian live in. Jullian had a bathroom, living room, kitchen, and a spot for a bed. On the second floor Sheila had a formal living room, large kitchen, a den with a screened in porch, and

When Sheila and her family moved to Alabama they were placed in a trailer park in the early 80’s. Sheila and her family had a two bedroom trailer with an orange shag carpet, a living room and a dine in kitchen. Around the corner of the trailer park where Sheila and her family lived sat a club that had a sign reading ‘NO BLACKS ALLOWED’. The club was placed around the woods; Sheila did not like this one bit, so she decided to raise hell until they got an apartment on the black side of town. Soon after Sheila gave birth to her second son Anthony –born on December 29th, 1983- Sykes was deployed to Baumholder West Germany in 1985 moving Sheila, Jullian, and now her second son Anthony to another army base.
Their new home had hardwood flooring, nothing fancy but comfortable. Soon after Sheila, Sykes, Jullian, and Anthony returned -from Germany to Texas- Sheila and Sykes had gotten a divorce. A few years later Sheila had Marquette on June 4th 1991 in Texas. Sheila first discovered her passion for decorating in 1984 when she first started thinking about getting a divorce to former husband Sykes. Because she was getting a divorce she decided to call a furniture company to pick up all of her unwanted furniture because she needed the money. Sheila, Jullian, and baby Anthony moved into an apartment in Texas with little to no furniture. Sheila started going to garage sales, and through one of her garage sale shopping sprees she came upon

and another bathroom. On the third floor there was a full bath and two more bedrooms, one for Sheila and Sykes –Sheila’s second husband- and a guest bedroom for family members to come and go as they pleased. In 1980 Sheila moved to North Carolina to a trailer park not far from the military base – where Sykes worked at- however, they did not stay long because in ‘82 they moved to Anniston, Alabama. “I lived in Anniston, Alabama at the time of the Atlanta Child Murders, and I’d hardly let your dad out to play because I thought if they can snatch little black boy’s in Atlanta and we are only one state over… what’s going to stop them from starting up and snatching kids in Alabama?” Sheila said.

sculptures are worth more today than when I bought them…I would never sell my sculpture collection! I hope that one day when I pass them down through my children and grandkids that they will keep them. Not because of the dollar value but the sentimental value,” Sheila said. Sheila Whiteley has inspired many people in her life; from people in her church to neighborhood children. By following Sheila’s example the world will be a better place, if everyone stays budget beautiful there would be no bullies who make fun of one another by their appearance. “I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations (no). I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am the soul that lives within.” India Aire Sung.§

However, if she saw a cute dress that cost forty dollars or more, she would not buy it, no matter how cute. Why? “My motto in decorating and fashion is budget beautiful, because I want to be beautiful but I am always on a budget,” Sheila said. If there was anything Sheila splurged on it would be her Maasi Collection. Sheila has been collecting sculptures from all over the world for as long as she can remember. “Everyone that knows me knows that I love my Maasi Collection and I love buying new additions. But my

And most of all, making things pretty.” Sheila said. When it comes to fashion Sheila doesn’t have a particular style; ironically Sheila’s co-workers compliment Sheila on her style saying things like ‘your outfits are so cute!’ and ‘Whoa, where did you get that?’ Even though Sheila doesn’t have a particular style she tends to wear dresses on a daily bases because when Sheila’s in a dress she feels comfort. When Sheila gets the chance to go to ROSS, and just so happens to catch a glimpse of a cu-e dress in her size, she buys it hands down, even if she has nowh-

A Small Salon, But A
Big Business
By: Cristal Garcia Lamas
The smell of Tresseme Serum and heat appliances, the OPI and Sally Hansen nail polishes on display, a roomy salon for customers to feel at home. A house filled with makeup, hair tools and family pictures. You turn to the right and see a small desk with a mirror behind it. Turn to the left and you see her living room with sofas for the customers to wait. This is the environment Ofelia Palomo works in. Her own house is her own personal salon for customers to come in by appointment. Other salons are judged by their looks and how expensive everything looks. “I may not have the fanciest salon or the most expensive products, I’m a fair worker, I work comfortable here at home, I don’t charge too much. I can happily say that besides my not so fancy salon I have many customers and I make my living by doing something that I love and feel passionate about” Ofelia said. You go downtown and you go to cities where salons are super fancy and huge, you don’t really need all that to give you a title, you only need your hands and the necessary material to create
good quality work to give customers a great hair style. “It’s very comfortable and long lasting because I can do many things, besides the things from my work.” Ofelia Palomo, a cosmetologist in Austin Texas is
now working at her own home. Working at home comes with some responsibility, but its easier working at home because its more relaxed and just think about it, she’s never going to be late! Ofelia went to cosmetologist school when she was in Mexico; she thinks it’s the same as here in the United
States. Working by herself, she does customers makeup, hair and nails. She has done many quinceañeras and weeding girls makeup. Ofelia can get many different customers at once, depends on the day of the week. On Saturday and Sundays she has more customers to attend. “My best clients are the kids because they don’t talk back and they’re very comfortable and they leave happy with their new look. My worst customers are the ladies that believe that a hair cut can change them” she said. “The hardest part of my work is to always be on top of what products, styles and colors are in style.” This means she does research and goes shopping to see what’s new. Not only does Ofelia create many different hair and nails for quinceañeras but she also does their makeup. She says she has many different makeup looks but her favorite is the smokey eye. “My favorite eye look is the smokey eye. It’s easy and it looks good,” Ofelia said. She has never really had any crazy makeup or hair for weddings and quinceañeras but TG27
she’s a cosmetologist at home, not to go. “Besides all the fighting between moms and daughters, one time, a fifteen year old wanted me to go with her to her quinceañera and in between her little “Surprise Dances” I would change her hair style. IMAGINE!!!! Taking off all those bobby pins and re-creating a whole new hair style from scratch in 5 minutes, that’s impossible!” she said. For now, Ofelia has worked as a cosmetologist for 12 years. She has done many hair styles “My favorite hair style is very simple, I like straight hair with blonde highlights and small strands of hair pulled back and put together with a flower bobby pin” she said. She has many favorite hair products such as Redken and Paul Mitchell but she explained which ones she liked the most. “I recommend The Bed Head Line that has a shampoo, conditioner and spray. Besides giving your hair volume and shine they smell amazing and they’re not super expensive!” “Balancing my work is not hard because I usually don’t set up my schedules really tight for me. I usually set up an appointment every hour or thirty minutes, it really depends on what my job is for the day or how many customTG28
“I think it’s all about being patient and keeping your cool for things, if I didn’t I would be lost, unable to finish my job or to concentrate while I do it.” Ofelia does her work and manages a way to balance things all together like family, chores at home, work and the few little extra personal things for herself. She thinks anything is possible as long as you dedicate yourself to it. “When I was a student I would set goals for myself and try to accomplish those, after one goal was accomplished I would set a new one.” Ofelia Palomo took a lot of effort and dedication to get where she is now. She might not have the fanciest salon or the most expensive tools to do her job but, remember it’s not the quantity if not the quality. §

These two things are what they need for winter in order for them to feel fashionable. They are both different pieces of clothing but can both complete the perfect outfit. To Ms. Michlik, the young, art teacher at LASA, the black and red boots are a must for winter to stay fashionable, “I have a lot of brown boots already.” she says “and scarves, I love scarves.” She says with a look on her face that shows how much she wants to go out and get them. “Um, the pea coat.” Hope says but to Lina it’s more of a broad category, “Coats. Good furry coats. Those are nice.” She answers. They both want coats but the coats they want are very different styles. The pea coat is long, and has a sort of vneck with a collar, and has buttons running all the way down. While furry coats are the ones with fur all over it that, feel soft and warm
around your body. Teen Vogue’s website says the coats to have this winter are the Bombers jacket, Faux Fur Jackets, and Pea Coats. When Hope needs advice she goes to, “Megan Jarriel is pretty cool.” she says. Hope’s resource is her bestfriend because she knows she would not lie to her and she won’t be mean about it if she doesn’t like it in fact she’s pretty sure she would help her out if anything. Lina she goes straight to the magazines “I don’t really go to someone, I use magazines anything I see and like from magazines I tend to grab and put my little style twist.” With winter coming there is a lot of stuff out there that you could feel like you need and waste your money on that you later find out you didn’t really

ne inch deep snow, sun shining, and wind blowing. Feels like the typical Texas winter day that every kid in AISD enjoys because there is no school. You run to the door but your mom stops you “Wear your coat!” she nags at you. You run to the closet but wait, what coat do you wear, the pink pea coat that will leave your girl friends with an open mouth or the furry coat you are dying to use for the first time. A first impression only lasts three seconds and you’ll want to make a good one. This impression will decide if they will hire you or not, if they are going to want to be your friends, or if she/he wants to go out with you. With all the fashion that’s out today and the way teenagers fashion work finding something to wear in between could be hard. To LASA freshman Hope Siegel, the new resurrected Ugg boots are a winter must to be fashionable, but to freshman Lina Fisher, good fitting pants are the winner. “The Ugg boots, those are comfortable.” Hope said while Lina answered “Good fitted pants, because well-uh they are a must. need. Not to panic, I recruited some answers to all your questions on what to buy and where. Hope and Lina both feel like they can go and buy most of their winter clothes at Forever 21. Definitely Forever 21, I love that place, that store has pretty clothes was just a couple of things Lina and Hope had to say. If your ever in doubt about buying that trendy coat at the fancy store then don’t buy it and go to Forever 21 were it will likely be and at a much cheaper price. What happens if you just really want that outfit at that fancy store and don’t want to leave it behind? Well Ms.Michlik solution is “I usually window shop at nice stores and then go and buy the outfits I like in cheaper stores.” Ms. Michlik is the art teacher at LASA and to her students she is one of the best dressed teachers. “How do you know you have style?” “Well my sister is 18 years old and she sends me texts of her outfit that day and asks if their okay or if she should change something. She also always steals clothes and wears them all the time.” That’s how Ms.Michlik knows she is on top of the fashion world. Ms. Michlik also knows when to buy a cute shirt and when not to buy. “I first think if its cheap, and if its worth it. Also I usually go for dark clothing because I

know will probably get paint on it.” she says holding the paint brush away from her jeans and checking her black shirt for any paint stains. There aren’t any. These are just some ways she makes sure that she won’t later have a buyers remorse. Emily, an employer at Buffalo Exchange, says one thing she and her co-workers will be pushing to sell to customers are sweater, coats, jackets, boots. “Those are things you need for the Texas winter, especially if your are true Texan and can’t stand the cold.” she says.
In winter you can never really go wrong, just throw on some jeans, boots, and a cute sweater and you’ll be fine but to go above and beyond to look amazing, and let people know you have great taste experiment with clothes and just do your thing. “Scarf ’s, and cardigans are fun things to experiment with.” says Emily. So with all of this information, you can really pick either jacket and it will be fine, so grab one and get outside there’s snow falling from the sky, in Texas!§

The Artist Behind the Shadows The Make-up Artist and TV Star Andrea Claire By: Amber Jaycox
“
I
love capturing the essence of a person – to enhance their own beauty and features,” Andrea says. Andrea Claire works as a makeup artist, has had her own TV show, worked with celebrities like Lady Annabelle, does make-up for models, fashion shows, magazines, advertisements, and much more so who better to know as much about make-up than she does.
“I’ve starred on two makeover series”
You can lead teams for fashion weeks; I led hair teams for Canada’s Fashion Week in Toronto and for Canadian Idol. If you are articulate and can write you can branch out as a beauty writer. I’ve written for Austin Woman, Yahoo! Singapore, Cosmetics magazines and more. Lots of campaign shoots, celebrities; I’ve worked with many including Lady Antebellum. You can also be on TV - I’ve starred on 2 makeover series ;total of 7 seasons on TV, and countless appearances on talk shows Possibilities are endless.” Andrea says
The jobs you can acquire in this industry or beauty industry roughly depends on the amount of time and the quality of education you receive studying in this profession. So if you want to be as professional as Andrea Claire some you might have to study for a while or longer than other students in order to get these successful jobs in this profession. Andrea has studied in the make-up and beauty business for quite some time, but that is not always the case for everyone who studies this profession.
Andrea has also traveled the world through fashion shows working in different places such as Canada, Toronto, and many other countries. So join us now as we get the inside scope of a day in the life of Andrea Clair. Andrea knows all the types of jobs you can acquire in the make-up business for she has worked for many of them herself. “You can become a spokesperson for a company; I’ve had contracts with L’Oreal Paris and P&G.
TG31
“Everyone is different and it depends on what you want to do. I strictly do fashion and beauty so I just pretty people up. If you want to do film and special FX that is a whole different education. To do what I do, you need passion, motivation and a course that can be anywhere from 6 months plus. Assisting is key too. Getting to be an assistant for a top artist or a few top artists will get you well on your way to perfecting your craft. Be part of a team too. Fashion shows, big commercial shoots etc. And never stop learning. If you feel you know it all - get into another career,” Andrea says. Make-up can have very different effects on emotions. For different people it plays different roles. “Everyone wants to look good. We all have bad days, looking tired, bad hair days etc... Sure it’s about what’s inside but your appearance does reflect inwards if you aren’t happy with what you see it sets your tone for the day. I’m afraid though that media has really affected how we look at ourselves. Women compare too much of themselves to what they see in photo shopped images. Perfection is no longer attainable or at least that’s what the media it portraying. Women need to realize that magazine images are not reality; they are a creating fantasy and sometimes art. Models are perfectly lit, styled etc...” Andrea says. Some say that the beauty industry is a rewarding business to be in and that they would gladly tell teenagers that it is a good career choice if they want to procure in it.
TG32
Andrea Claire says she would do just that. Andrea says that make-up is absolutely good business to be in. “But it is challenging and full of egos at times... you have to learn how to deal with some people and be patient. ALWAYS be friendly and nice to everyone - even with those that aren’t the same to you. Some days you will need to ‘turn the other cheek.’” Andrea says that she would tell teenagers it is a good business to be in, “but it is competitive. You have to strive for success,” she says. Now a lot of people most of whom are women are always looking for good beauty tips as some people would put it a magic wand made for a beautiful, flawless look. And Andrea Claire has just that wand for those tips. If you want to make your face appear to look smaller and slimmer because you feel that your cheeks, your chin, and the sides of your face are too chubby, there is a certain way that you can apply your make-up to get that slimmer appearance. Andrea can help. “Sculpting is very popular now,” Andrea says. “In the 80s it was all about hard contours, now it’s getting that sculpted JLo glow.” She says you can get this slimmer look by putting “Bronzer on your cheek hollows, you can find this by creating a fish face, then put blush over the bronzer and slightly above it and then highlighter on your cheek bones.” Andrea says. When giving advice on coloring Andrea says, “Colors that don’t match your skin will just make the makeup stand out not you.
You want to wear your makeup not have the makeup wear you.” Andrea says that wearing make-up at too young of an age does nothing to your skin “It’s about how you take care of your skin. If you don’t wash off your makeup it will stretch your pores over time and age you.” Andrea also says that to get “Flawless and younger looking means radiant skin. Choose dewy products and stay away from powder. Drink tons of water - you will see the pay off.”She also says that when trying to decide how much is too much make-up that it is, “relative to the occasion really. I think the biggest thing is generally women wear too much concealer and powder.”Andrea also gives advice on cheap and easy ways that people with less money and time can still achieve this flawless look. She gives suggestions like using, “Simply sheer, glowing products. And that Jemma Kidd has a great line at Target. Also, to use liquid foundation and apply with a foundation brush - this is a great start for flawless skin.” If Andrea were to give an estimated amount of time, money, and effort you would have to put in to get this younger flawless look she says that, “A flawless look can be done under $50. Time - if you want a natural look... under 10 minutes and effort is minimal if you consider under 10 minutes in front mirror easy peasy.” Andrea Claire works as a TV star, make-up artist, and can easily give advice. As she has told us what kind of jobs you can receive if you choose to work in the beauty industry.
How long you have to study this profession in order to succeed at it. What make-up can do for yourself consensus. Why it’s a rewarding business to be in, and has given us beauty tips on how to get a flawless, younger look.. Andrea Claire certainly loves what she does and you can see it in the exciting way that she talks about her career and due to all of her experiences she is certainly a person fit to talk all about make-up and to give advice and opinions of what she truly believes about the job she loves.
“Sculpting is very popular now” “My goal is to help real people and models alike feel great about how they look. There’s nothing better than people leaving my chair with a new lift in their step, and in their spirits.” Andrea says. §

Style is evolving all over the world, you have people walking in the streets wearing the most expensive clothes and then you see people wearing their own style, very different from others. Fashion has a different definition for everyone, especially to a fashion designer. Leslie currently works for Richie and Traver from Heatherette. Her schedule is really busy she fly’s from New York to L.A and sometimes to Austin. She never though that being a fashion designer meant a busy schedule. Leslie graduated here in Austin from a High school near Lake Travis. She went to fashion school where she learned how to design , her dad paid her classes. She told her parents she wanted to go to the fashion world( New York).
So she moved to Manhattan and started working for Heatherette after a while when she finally had enough money she started working little by little so she would have enough money to open her store and in a blink of eyes she had her store open, which is located in Manhattan, its called M&G Designs. “I feel very blessed and happy that I was able to open my own clothing line at such a young age. Sometimes I ask myself is this really happening? It has taken a lot of hard work, and I have sacrificed a lot of time for me and my family, but all of my family has been very supportive and can proudly say that it was all worth it” Leslie said
She loves to design clothes although it might take a long process she still enjoys to do it. “To create on paper just takes a few hours. To actually make a piece takes about 1 to two days depending on the labor, material, sewing, and all the work that involves making clothes”. Leslie said Leslie’s latest design is a dress, When you look at it it looks like a shirt tucked in into a skirt but its actually a dress. The top is blue with white stripes and the bottom is red and in the shoulders it has a golden chain( kind of like a marine look) Even someone who’s already someone in life dream’s of meeting someone that inspires them, and they admire. Leslie has always dreamed of working with Christian Louboutin. “ I have always admired Christian Louboutin, he is someone that I would definitely like to collaborate with.” Leslie said. The last day with Leslie was very unforgettable. In Leslie second studio they were getting ready to launch Leslie newest designs to her clothing line. The White and fresh Gardenias( they took them as a present) brighten up the room .[ A table with lemon bars , and plenty of more food to feed the entire guest]. Young man wearing tuxedos with they’re ties in place
. Young ladies wearing cocktail dresses and their hair and make up perfect. Everyone with a wine glass in their hand getting ready to cheer for Leslie’s newest collection. Her hair pulled back in a strained pony tail and for make up red lipstick with long eye lashes and smoky eyes , for accessories she wore diamond earrings and a very small diamond necklace.
Models (thick models) walking through the runway wearing Leslie’s designs, casual, formal and cocktail dresses just past like the wind in the runway. People clapping and cheering while Leslie was the last one to walk the runway . “Remember who ever said money couldn’t buy happiness obviously didn’t know where to go shopping”. Leslie said.§

The Pregnant Stars in HollyWood Beyonce, Hillary, and Brenda Pregnant By: Amber Jaycox
Y
ep Brenda Song is Pregnant and now engaged to Miley Cyrus brother Trace Cyrus. Yeah Brenda Song is 23 years old but she’s not married to Trace Cyrus so it’s not a good thing that’s she’s pregnant with him but at least their getting married and they seem very much in love so I guess then good for her. But I do not recommend you go out and get pregnant with your boy friend before you get married this was just an accident and now their making it right and hopefully their very happy together and aren’t just doing this for the baby cause that will lead to some problems.
Well one Disney channel starlet who is pregnant and not afraid to admit it because she did it the right way marriage before baby is Hillary Duff. After beginning married for almost a year Hillary Duff and her hubby are expecting their first baby together now though the mom to be is scared and wanted to wait a little while she is still super excited about the pregnancy and she should be she’ll be a great mom. So cheers to all of these past Disney stars pregnant or not congratulations.
About one Month ago Beyonce walked down the MTV movies award show gladly showing off her new baby bump. What a proud momma. But after appearing on the Saturday night live show when her stomach caved in some are saying she is faking being pregnant and that she is wearing a prosthetic belly (which by the way is like a foam hump that has a belt around it so you can wear it around your stomach which actress use when they have to act a scene that requires them to be pregnant.)
“Disney Channels stars that are pregnant.” So just how far along is the Disney channel starlet with this pregnancy well that is not confirmed since the couple are still dining the pregnancy but they are engaged now. The only thing that makes the pregnancy rumors realistic is that Miley said she’s excited about becoming an aunt and they are engaged so let them tell us what to think right.

Brenda Song and Trace Cyrus at the red carpet
Hillary Duff posing for a magazine off her belly
And they have hired a surrogate to carry their first child. But how can this be if it is true which i hardly doubt it. It might be because since she’s a celebrity she didn’t want to mess up her body. But she always wanted a kid and it would just seem stupid and ridiculous to fake a pregnancy. I mean what would that even do there’s no point of it. I mean she’s not stupid she would know if she did that she would get caught. And yeah the belly kind of sunk in but it was probably just because of her dress and the way she was bending down. So once the baby is born I’m pretty sure that the answer will be clear enough to all the believers that she is pregnant it’s just stupid to say she’s not.
“Beyonces Faking Pregnacy?” So if you go to LA or Hollywood anytime soon or in the next 9 months you might be lucky enough to see these pregnant super stars and maybe even feel the baby kick if you don’t get tasered first. Either way the miracle of life sure is a miracle especially when your parents are both super talented so your almost a hundred percent likely to become famous too and not just because you’re the child of a huge pop star I’m mean that has to help the matter some or alot but because you were able to inherit your Grammy award winning
Beyonces’ announcing she’s pregnant at the MTVs 2011 in the movies awards.
parents talent cause that is quit a career booster. Congratulations to all of the new mommy’s and mommy’s to be around the world you will all be great parents. Goodbye and try to get some sleep, down time, and as little headaches as possible.§

It can be a comedy, drama, chick-flick, horror, romance, or even a sic-com just pick some movie that everyone will enjoy. That will either make you laugh, be super girly and saying ahh. That makes you cry, or wet your pants screaming or I guess you can wet your pants laughing too.

But you also need to be a good friend and keep in mind that some of your friends may not like being scared and it could cause them to want to go home which in these cases funny stories are totally acceptable too. After that you go to bed or at least you pretend to be sleeping when your mom is yelling at you to go to sleep its five in the morning but of course what you really will be doing is catching up on your gossip and just talking with your best friends. This will make it the perfect party or sleepover ever and everybody will remember it plus you would have had lots of fun hanging out with the people you care about. So this is good-bye till my next post well I hope you have a Great Party!!!!!!! Love Amber J §

And of course no sleep over or party is complete with-out ghost stories. Try to tell the scariest stories that you can thinks of to make it hard for your friends to sleep.
