Letter from the editors This is The BRIDGE’s first release. We thought the title would be fitting because our magazine contains both art and music related content. It’s meant to cover a broad range of interests; fashion, music, art, pop culture, and even science; which are all more connected than we might realize. When the BRIDGE staff first started working together, we didn’t know each other well. We all have very different personalities and interests, which made it difficult to pick a specific topic for our magazine. Because of this, however, The BRIDGE has plenty of variety. We usually like to include interviews with local or rising musicians, artists, and designers. In addition we pay attention to trends in fashion, and also provide scientific facts related to art and music. But the main point is always bringing two types of media together. Music and art are a part of almost everyone’s life, and it will never “go out of style”. The BRIDGE has something for everyone.

About the Authors
A look inside the lives of the BRIDGE staff and designers
Manuel Rojas Manuel lost his soul in a bet, and then the guy he lost it to traded it for a piece of pizza. Lost in his own world filled with video games and music, Manuel loves spending time on knowyourmeme and other pointless, time-consuming websites. He only leaves his room when he has a coughing fit or when his dad calls him outside. His area of expertise includes pop culture and internet memes. As far as we know he doesn’t have any long-term life plans. His strategy for now is to engage in a sadomasochistic cycle of procrastination and doing the bare minimum. He is interested in art, and listens towell, pretty much whatever he feels like. What rules? He mostly enjoys digital art and cartoonography. His style can only be defined as “comfortable”. He likes making MLP characters fight.
Chloe Larson Chloe is the real definition of “artsy”, a term loosely and incorrectly thrown around by hipsters. Her mind is a jungle of music, art, fashion...some-what, and different branches of science. We’re not really sure how to classify her, stylewise. A mix between goth and nerdy, maybe? She listens to dubstep, EDM, industrial metal, and miscellaneous genres of rock. She does 2D, 3D, and digital art, and enjoys messing up celebrity faces on photoshop. Not that she knows who any of them are, or why they are famous, but that’s not the point. She went through a “fashionable” phase that lasted a year or two, but is now beyond the point of caring. If it’s black, dark grey, dark red, dark green, neon yellow, etc. it’s wearable. Now Chloe occupies herself with The Office, Bates Motel, Breaking Bad, and the Ice and Fire series.
Sanjana Srinath Sanjana is the most extroverted of the BRIDGE staff, a striking contrast when compared to the other two members. She listens to what society likes to call, “crappy pop-music.” She does the most interviews, and designed the cover page. She also made our magazines Tumblr page. She definitely likes spending time with people, depending on the person. And, without her, we’d get ALL these celebrities mixed up, so thank god. Despite being a professional procrastinator, she pays a lot of attention to detail and uses creative techniques to design her pages. Simply, she could be described as Mindy Kaling’s “mini-me”. She believes that Tumblr is her religion, Ellen DeGeneres is her goddess, Mindy Kaling is her queen, and Zac Efron is her knight in shining armor.

SHOW
Fashion trends have changed in dramatic ways over the past few decades. However, that does not mean that some trends are not recurring. A lot of styles today are being influenced by those of the 1980s. Baggy Sweaters
A well loved style that has reappeared in the biggest way, baggy sweaters have taken up the closets of the female population of the world like a storm.
Leggings
A type of pants that go with almost everything, leggings have been a fashion staple.
High Waisted Jean Shorts
Starting out as a pair of “mom jeans” that were cut into shorts, this type of clothing has evolved into a more well known and more appealing article of clothing known as high waisted shorts.
Long Gym Socks
Many people, mainly females, have recently begun to pair up long gyms socks and tennis shoes with shorts as a recent fashion statement.
Neon Colors
The reappearance of neon since the 80’s have become more subtle. Instead of having a whole outfit made up of neon, styles often include one part of the whole outfit embellished in neon.
Shoulder Pads
Often seen worn by Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, shoulder pads have made their return in various shapes and sizes. All Photos By H&M

he Whiskey Shivers have never really been what society calls “normal”. Known for their diverse styles and unique music, this band’s music has a great influence on their fans’ fashion with a twist. Although at first glance these people seem like an “anti- scene” group, their audacity in not being afraid to be who they are and wear what they want is reflected in the varied styles and ignorance against judgement amongst their crowd. “The fanbase reflects the influence we have by feeling good and wearing what they like the same way we do,” Bobby Fitzgerald, a member from the band The Whiskey Shivers said.

The Whiskey Shivers have more of an influence on the attitude of people towards different styles and actions compared to a physical influence on fashion itself.
“We try to keep clothes all over the place to include all styles,” Fitzgerald said.
“If there is any influence, it would be what not to do. We hope that no one feels like they belong or don’t belong,” Joe Deuce, another member from the band The Whiskey Shivers said.

The Whiskey Shivers, a self-proclaimed “ freewheelin’”, “trashgrassin’”, “folk tornado” local Austin based band, are made up of five people. They found each other on Craigslist and formed in 2009. These five passionate people enjoy playing unique instruments and entertaining people. Music has a great influence amongst designers and people. Believe it or not, Albert Einstein’s work could not have been made without the presence of music. Upon reaching roadblocks in calculations, Einstein would often turn to music to help clear his mind

statement. In public places, it can often be observed that people are wearing clothing “advertising” a certain band, or mimicking their styles. These mimics often range from wearing a mock of an artist’s original clothing to colors usually associated with a genre of music. The various different styles inspired by music can often be observed at informal public functions. Generally, pop music artists and listeners dress up in preppy, tight, or flashy designs whereas indie music artists and listeners generally wear grungy

The biggest influence The Whiskey Shivers have had on fashion is to stay true to yourself and do what you want to do.

“I’ve observed that people like me who listen to Alternative music dress up in an Indie or Hippie fashion,” freshman Illiana Banda said.
Sometimes, a person’s style isn’t necessarily directly based off of an artist’s music. It can be based off an artist’s attitude a fan relates to. The direct correlation between music and fashion is also based off of an individual’s personality traits. This is called music cognition. A person’s attitude is generally reflected in the music they listen to which in turn reflects on their style. “I started listening to the music I do since I started middle school, and Indie rock began to influence my style starting 8th grade which was
The most common influence music has are on band t-shirts. Band T-Shirts are influenced by many aspects of an artist and their work. The shirt may have a picture of the artist or their album. Some shirts are tour shirts, and they may have minimal major details about an artist’s printed on them. Some shirts have song lyrics printed on them. An example of this would be the many One Direction shirts with the chorus of “What Makes You Beautiful”, their biggest hit, on them. “I sometimes wear what stars wear, because the clothing looks cute and comfortable at the same time, and sometimes they don’t have to wear super tight or flashy stuff to look cute,” Banda said. Lorde’s fame skyrocketed after her single “Royals” topped the charts for many days. Her fame not only begins with her music, but with her unique style/fashion as well as her makeup. Her eyeliner in the music video of Royals is one many people have attempted to recreate. Shown here is a simple method for achieving this look.
2 Using pencil or liquid liner, make a small diagonal line going up from the edge of your eyelid.
Using liquid eyeliner, make a thin line across your lash line that starts near the base of your tear ducts.
Draw a horizontal line that goes a little short of halfway across your eyelid.

BORN SORNE S An Interview with Morgan Sorne BY MANUEL ROJAS
weating profusely onstage, wearing cotton and stretch material decorated with glyphs and all sorts of strange symbols, Morgan Sorne does what he’s been doing all his life: play music. Sorne is a distinctive performer and has been playing music his whole life, and will keep doing it until he dies. His dressing style is just as unique as his music, and he’s won Texas Biennial Artist back in 2009 and won Austin Chronicle’s Artist of the year 2013. Sorne is an Austin based performer born in Tallahassee 1983 who has been performing onstage since he was 2 years old. “For me the stage is a familiar and comfort-
able place. I have always felt at home on stage.” He has come to love performing even more. “Entering into that mental and physical space is a cathartic process by which I clear and realign.”
He’s written over 80 songs. The first 13 songs were released in 2011 in his first album, House of Stone. It tells the story of a family that just lost its father. House of Stone also features “Gigantomachia” and “Overtones”, which are in his opinion, “the most gratifying in performance.” When he listens to his own music, he gravitates towards the “Golden Death Chant” because the harmonies make him happy.
Sorne says that the goal of
his music is to “create an experience that awakens all senses”. Storytelling has been a central theme of the work over the past few years. Other themes include spiritual, sexual, and social identity, symbolism and humanism.” His music uses layered vocal samples and handmade instruments as well. People have placed it under many different music genres, such as “tribal, electronica,

avant garde, avant pop, alternative rock, and electrospacefolk.” Sometimes people also associate his music with rock, but he doesn’t use electric guitars or bass instruments, the two main components of rock music. He says. “All of my work is simply an exploration of my heart mind and soul.” Furthermore, he doesn’t believe

He says that he believes that “The sounds and compositions are merely the end result of allowing for that signature to be revealed and exposed.” He also says he doesn’t have a creative process. “I have a creative process. “I don’t think. I just throw the ball. Over and over and over and over and over and over again.” The end result is music that sounds like no other. Once while he was performing, Sorne had a man “drop to his knees in tears and fan out $1000 in front of me as the sun rose over the mountains near Pyramid Lake.”
Sorne also tries to keep his performances unique. “I try to keep this process as a core to my art, and any time the performance feels forced, redundant, or rehearsed, I make changes to keep the visceral nature alive.” When he performs, he sweats a lot, so he needs to wear cotton and stretch materials. He also says that the biggest challenge he’s faced so far is letting go.
“I think the only thing that would stop me would be death, but I’ll be singing in the afterlife too.”
Sorne, while a solo artist, has recently started to perform with other people. “The musicians that I have performed with I have met in audition and through friends. The most recent incarnation of the live show came about organically via friends and performing live around Austin.” Hi-5’ing the sky

COLOR EFFECTS
The way artists and designers use color to influence our perception in ways we might not realize
Red can connect with either negative or positive emotions. It symbolizes power and prosperity. However, depending on the shade it can appear luxurious, macabre, or a delicate pink. Pink is usually counted as a hue in itself, because it’s associated with different things., especially feminism.
Orange combines elements of both red and yellow. Therefore it can be passionate, abundant, and fun; or deprived, frustrated, and superficial. Orange has high contrast with it’s complementary color, blue. This effect is popular in art and design.
Violet (purple) is a symbol of spirituality. Its usually a feminine color, and companies who want to be perceived as creative or friendly will implement purple into their logo. Purple is historically associated with luxury or a high position of leadership, .It can also mean decadence or ignorance.
Blue is a calm color, compared to red and yellow. It is the color or trustworthiness and clarity, but it can also represent coldness and dark. Because of this, blue is one of the most common colors used in marketing. It stands can stand for intelligence, calmness, unfriendliness, or cold.
The meaning of yellow depends more on its contrast/blend with other colors surrounding it, and less on the specific shade. Sometimes its a “happy” color, and other times it represents irrationality and fear. It’s used in advertising to grab attention. Green, being in the center of the visible light spectrum, symbolizes balance and nature. It can be calm or lively and exciting. Besides being a universal symbol for environmental awareness, different shades can be perceived as bland or stagnant.

Melissa Taylor has a bachelor’s degree in studio art. She teaches at Austin School of Fashion Design. Not only that, but she is also a designer herself. She has her own line of clothing labelled Katastrophic, for which she makes it her mission to be environmentally friendly and mindful of production techniques, as well as making ethical decisions regarding business growth.
“I have a degree in studio art, and thought about making that my career, but I wanted to do something that I could apply more of my beliefs to- a more practical field, maybe. I decided fashion would be the perfect medium to express myself. First of all I love fashion, and I can make more of a difference through it by how I chose to do business. form. What people wear is influenced by what’s happening in the world and in society at that time. Like, after 9/11, people started wearing more dark colors and dressed more conservatively, because it was a time of darkness, mourning; a time to be serious. And also, they’re never really new; they always come back, but in a different way. It’s funny how one thing gets very popular and the next thing thats ‘in’ is always the antithesis of the last.”
I drew a lot of inspiration from my own pain and loneliness

Taylor thinks back to what she wore in her teen years.
Some notable elements from the runway today include pastel colors, geometric shapes, 80’s inspired designs, and athletic details. Some more unique to this decade are “flatforms”, iridescence, and see-through wedges. Advances in technology has made these possible;
