Principal Ideas Hello. It is May. It is unbelievable to me that we have arrived at the last month of school; this year has absolutely sped by for me. I am sure many of you, especially the parents of our seniors, feel much the same way.
Courtney R. Kassakhian Principal
Because of Easter Break, there were only two full weeks of school in April, but we still managed to fit in a lot of activity. Prior to break we, of course, had our annual Grandparents Day event. The Dining Hall was packed with 119 of our students who were joined by more than 200 grandparents. They were all treated to performances from students in our Arts and Media department, as well as presentations by our Academic Decathlon and Speech and Debate teams. Thank you to the many, many parents who helped make the day possible by setting up the Dining Hall the evening before or helping out the day of the event. We could not host an event this large and this successful without the help of our parents!

Over the Easter break our debaters traveled to the Tournament of Champions in Kentucky and had great success. Out of 120 National Champions, Jackie Henley and Sebastian Dunbar, both seniors, made it to octofinals (top 16). Moreover, Jackie got the 3rd best speaker award overall. This is the first time a La Salle debater has cracked the top 10 speakers! Huge congratulations to our students and their coaches, Ms. Elizabeth Meerson and Mr. Jeff Niemiec.
Student Life Election
We then finished out the month with Student Life Election Week beginning April 29. Congratulations to our newly elected officers, especially our new Student Body President Miguel Lanza.
Arts and Media
Even though May is our last month of school, it is not a time when we begin to slow down. The month brings many opportunities to celebrate the wonderful work of the students in our Arts and Media department. On May 4 we will Principal continued on page 2

have the AP Art show in the Blakeslee Learning Commons, the Spring Dance Concert will take place May 18 and 19 and May 24 is the Band, Choir and Strings Concert. I hope that many of you will join us at these performances and see and hear the terrific work of our students as they demonstrate all that they have learned over the past school year.
AP Exams May also brings AP exams. The first exam takes place
See AP Exam Schedule on page 14
on Monday, May 6 and exams will continue until May 17. These college level exams determine whether or not the individual student is eligible to receive college credit, so I wish all of our students the best as they go into this culminating event. We will continue our practice of allowing students who have taken a morning AP exam to leave for the day after they have completed the exam. Should a student choose to leave for the day after an exam, they are still responsible for the classroom work they miss.
Showdown
After AP tests are finished our students get to celebrate by coming to and participating in our annual Showdown on Friday, May 17. Showdown is an incredibly fun and spirited event. If your student has not participated in Showdown before, encourage them to do so. I would also like to encourage any interested parents to come for the competitive portion that takes place in the gym at approximately 7:00pm. If you do come, be ready for lots of noise! The level of energy and spirit at the event is enormous and terrifically loud!
Mont La Salle College, Nigeria
Although May 17 will be the final event day and determine the winner of the Showdown, the competition has already begun. Prior to Easter Break our students raised money for our twinning school, Mont La Salle College in Naka, Nigeria, a junior high and high school serving boys and girls. Our Junior class won the event by bringing in $8,443.75 and as a whole our school raised a whopping $18, 570.62. This amount blows away our fundraising totals in the past and we are so excited to be able to support

another Lasallian school in this way. We are currently planning an immersion trip to Naka for Easter Break 2020. An information meeting was held in April for interested students and we are excited about this opportunity for students to do service and learn more about the worldwide Lasallian mission.
Academic Awards
In addition to changes around finals, more on that in a minute, this year we will not be having the evening Academic Awards Assembly that we have had in the past. We acknowledge the academic achievement of our students at an assembly each semester and believe we do a pretty good job of celebrating the core principle of Quality Education. However, we are looking at ways we can acknowledge achievement of the rest of the core principles in our students. This project is a work in progress and we look forward to being able to institute some new celebration of not only academic gifts, but so many other gifts, with a newly reformatted event next school year. In the meantime, we are going to have an event on May 21 that we hope our students will find really fun. With finals beginning May 24, three days before that, on May 21, we will have an extended lunch period to offer our students some stress relief before heading into review days and final exams. During the extended lunch we will have student bands playing throughout campus, mini therapy horses on the grass field, and meditation and a sound bath in the Grinstead Theatre. We hope this gives them some slight respite from the stress leading up to finals.
Commencement of the Class of 2019
And of course, this year, for the first time, all of our students will take their finals and finish school at the same time. Finals begin Friday, May 24 and conclude Thursday, May 30. May 30 is the last day of school for all students and will also bring Senior Breakfast, Senior Presentation, Baccalaureate Mass and Grad Nite! It will be a busy day indeed for our seniors, so it is a good thing that upon returning from Grad Nite at approximately 6:00am on Friday, May 31 all they need to do is sleep and then get ready for Commencement at the Church of the Nazarene at 6:00pm that evening. Graduation is a ticketed event and senior parents should have received information about how to get tickets, in addition to information about all things graduation, in previous mailings, meetings, and emails. Tickets are available at www.lasallehs.org/gradtix. Each students is allotted 10 tickets. Please contact Elizabeth Serhan if you have questions or would like to request more. Tickets are currently available for pick-up in Room 306.
Thank You to Our Parents
Students do not make it to graduation without the help and support of many people, most notably their parents. Our Graduation ceremony therefore is also a testament to our parents who have sacrificed and been a steady influence in the life of their son or daughter. Every student at La Salle completes their journey at this school because of the care and support parents provide on a daily basis. So thank you to the parents of our graduating seniors for your evident commitment and love in the raising of your soon-to-be college bound children.
I hope you all have a wonderful May!

Planned Giving in Support of Our Mission The Mission of our School states that La Salle College Preparatory is a Roman Catholic educational community inspired by the traditions of St. John Baptist de La Salle. Focuses of our Mission include: Planned Giving supports the long-term Mission of our School.
Nurturing the Talents of each student • Inspiring in students a sense of responsibility for others • Challenging students to embrace diversity • Motivating our students to respond compassionately to the needs of others, especially the poor • This May, our School will graduate its 60th class. Naturally the look of our campus and facilities has changed dramatically through the years, and plans for new and updated facilities are forthcoming. Our traditional School curriculum is complemented as facets of our society are addressed in new and advanced manners. The STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and math) component of our Schools educational focus is in a never-ending process of change to provide our students the best education available in these evolving areas. An integral part of supporting the Mission of our School is the planned giving program. This program provides support to the School’s endowment through one of a number of Planned Giving instruments. It is essential in supporting the long-term goals and Mission of our School. Examples of planned gifts in support of our School’s Mission include:
14 8
· •
Donations of appreciated assets such as securities and real estate held at least one year
· •
Naming our School as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or a Trust
May 2019
· •
Using one’s IRA to reduce one’s income tax liability
· •
Establishing a charitable gift annuity to reduce taxes and enhances one’s cash flow
Utilizing these and other financial and tax strategies requires the counsel of one’s financial and/or tax advisor. However, these and other planned giving opportunities can be beneficial to the donor (from both financial and tax perspectives) and support the donor’s goal of supporting the Mission of our School. These planned giving strategies are available to benefit both the donor and La Salle College Preparatory. Please review the Planned Giving articles in future publications of both the Parent Newsletter and Lancer Magazine for ongoing updates in the Planned Giving Program. IN SUMMARY La Salle College Preparatory can provide more information, both generically and specifically, regarding the benefits available through Planned Giving. For more information, please contact Jon Keates, the Vice President for Institutional Advancement at 626.696.4344.
Matching Gifts
If you are an employee of a matching gift company, we would love to work with you. This is an easy way to raise funds for La Salle. If you are not sure if your company participates, you can ask your employer or contact: Tara Morales at: tmorales@lasallehs.org or call 626.696.4381.

Advanced Placement (AP) Exams
The AP Exams will take place from May 6 to May 17 at the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church. Students should plan to arrive at the exam site by 7:45 AM for morning exams and at 11:45 AM for afternoon exams check-in. Exams are scheduled to start promptly at 8:00 AM and at noon.
See AP Exam Schedule on Page 14
Students are encouraged but not required to attend school on the day of their exam(s). Those who choose to attend school must be wearing the school uniform. Otherwise, they may be in non-uniform attire but still abiding by the dress code. An attendance roster will be published for the school prior to and after an exam. Please contact Ms. Salvatierra if you have questions about the AP exams.
Seniors
At this point, all seniors should have submitted their deposits to the college where they plan to attend and have notified the colleges where they declined admission offers. We are now in the process of collecting application results and scholarship award information for our graduation program and our ad in the Star News. Please ask your senior to complete the “Senior Graduation” and the “Senior Involvement” surveys on Naviance (under the “About Me” tab), if he or she has not already done so. We wish the class of 2019 all the best in their college endeavors!
Juniors
We have met with almost all of the juniors about their college plans. If we have not met with your student, chances are your student has not completed his or her College Planning Survey. All juniors who have turned in their survey will be seen before the last day of the school year. Once your junior has met with his/her college counselor, parents are welcome to make appointments with us.
12
May 2019 All juniors took the ACT in February. They may have taken or have registered for the SAT and possibly for the SAT Subject Tests this spring. The June SAT and ACT are extremely popular and they usually fill up well before the late registration deadlines. After the June tests, the next SAT will be on August 24th and the next ACT will be on September 14th. Most colleges will accept test scores through December of the student’s senior year so for those planning on re-taking the test after the spring, here are the upcoming dates: SAT Reasoning AND Subject Tests dates June 1 (registration by May 3) August 24 (registration by July 26) October 5 (registration by September 6) November 2 (registration by October 4) December 7 (registration by November 8) ACT Dates June 8 (registration by May 3) September 14 (registration by August 16) October 26 (registration by September 27) December 7 (registration by November 8) We encourage you to register early as some of these dates are highly popular, especially the June ones. Juniors should also strive to keep their grades up. The cumulative GPA reported in their college applications will include their second semester of junior year. Some colleges will look at senior year grades, too. Besides, the cumulative GPA (sophomore and junior years) are reported to Cal Grants for financial aid eligibility consideration.
Class of 2020 College Planning Survey
The Class of 2020 will receive the next steps to plan for college by email in the summer, which will include an announcement to access and complete the Senior College Planning Survey on Naviance. Rising seniors will have time to think about the questions and their answers over summer break and submit their survey electronically by the first week of school.

Celebrating Saint La Salle The truly extraordinary life of Saint La Salle ended on Good Friday, April 7, 1719 and we commemorate the 300th anniversary of his death this month. La Salle was a French priest from a wealthy family. In March, 1679, he met Adrian Nyel in a chance encounter at the Convent of the Sisters of the Infant Jesus. Nyel asked for De La Salle's help in opening free schools for the poor boys in Reims. Following his efforts to establish these schools, the Brothers of the Christian Schools was founded by Saint Jean-Baptiste de La Salle in 1680. La Salle was an educational pioneer establishing a practical curriculum, teaching many students simultaneously in their language instead of Latin. He taught the rich with the poor and established teacher training schools. A novitiate and normal school were established in Paris in 1694. The order was approved by Pope Benedict XIII in 1725, and rapidly spread over France. It was dissolved by a decree of the National Assembly set up after the French Revolution in February 1790, but recalled by Napoleon I in 1804 and formally recognized by the French government again in 1808. La Salle gave his wealth to the poor and essentially spent his life teaching poor children in parish charity schools. He was canonized as a saint on 15 May 1900. In 1950 Pope Pius XII declared him to be the "Special Patron of All Teachers of Youth in the Catholic Church." Today, there are nearly 4,000 Christian Brothers and more than 93,000 educators teaching over 950,000 students in nearly every country of Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Australia. Final words of Saint La Salle, "I adore in all things the will of God in my regard." Saint La Salle passed in Rouen, Normandy, France surrounded by family and the Brothers in Southern France. At his death, there were 23 active communities and 100 Christian Brothers continuing the mission he set forth.

Riley's Race 4 Change blows the top off the Tracking Thermometer.
Riley’s Race 4 Change ended on April 17 raising a record-breaking $18,500 plus for our Lasallian sister school Mount La Salle in Naka, Nigeria. "As many of you know, we have been forging a stronger relationship with Mount La Salle School this past year, so today I would like to say thank you to all of you for your generosity and support of this program as it will do a tremendous amount of good at Mount La Salle," said Mr. Ed O'Connor, Director of Student Life. Under the energetic direction of Ms. Julia Frisina '11 and the service team we brought in $18,576. This smashed our previous best of 10K by nearly doubling last year's total. Next year, at Easter time, Ms. Whitney Strouse '07, Community Life Coordinator, will lead a two-week immersion trip to visit and learn from our friends at Mount La Salle School in Naka, Nigeria.

Speech & Debate at Champions Tourney “What a weekend we’ve had,” exclaimed Lancer Speech & Debate Coach, Elizabeth Meerson. “Seniors Jackie Henley and Seb Dunbar debated the best they ever have. I am beaming with pride.” Out of 120 teams that qualified to this most competitive National Tournament of the school year, Sebastian and Jackie made it to octofinals, which means they are among the top 16 debate teams in the nation. The Tournament of Champions was held in Lexington, Kentucky in late April. Additionally, Jackie Henley earned the Third Best Speaker award overall, meaning that she is ranked as the third best debater in the country. Moreover, the two debaters placing higher than her were both males, meaning that Jackie is ranked as the best female debater in the entire country. This is the first time any La Salle debater has cracked the top 10 nationally. Looking ahead, one freshman and two sophomores are training for the NSDA National Tournament in Dallas, Texas this June.
Debaters tool around Kentucky with a couple of their trophies.
Jack Crawford '18, a S&D coach in training, joined Coach Jeff Niemiec, Coach Meerson, Henley and Dunbar in Lexington, Kentucky. Our Speech & Debate team has visited seven states this year (six besides CA): KY, NY, AZ, NV, TX, GA. Over the course of 26 tournaments, In-n-Out is a favorite post-tournament dinner spot. The team has eaten at over a dozen different In-n-Outs across multiple states in 2018-2019.
