LEADERSHIP MESSAGE

Dear La Salle College Preparatory Community,

As we embark on another academic year together, I am filled with a profound sense of gratitude for the enduring legacy of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. As I begin my fifth school year with the proud honor of serving as La Salle’s school president, I continue to be inspired and guided by our school’s Five Core Principles. These principles are my “north star” and help to ensure that the work we do, alongside an outstanding faculty and staff, always keeps student learning and passion at the forefront of our decisions and strategic direction.

Faith in the Presence of God: At the heart of our community lies a deep-rooted faith in the presence of God. Through prayer, reflection, and service, we seek to deepen our spiritual lives and connect with a higher power. In the past five years, we have enhanced our faith formation programs, including retreats and service opportunities, to foster a stronger spiritual foundation for our students. This spiritual foundation fuels the passion that drives our students to make a difference in the world.

Inclusive Community: La Salle is a vibrant and diverse community where every

individual is valued and respected. We embrace differences and celebrate the unique contributions of each member. Over the past five years, we have made significant strides in creating a more inclusive environment, implementing initiatives that ensure all feel welcomed, and fostering intercultural understanding through global education programs. This inclusive environment fosters a sense of belonging and empowers students to pursue their passions to their fullest potential.

Concern for the Poor and Social Justice:

We are committed to serving those in need and working for a more just and equitable world. Through various service projects and social justice initiatives, our students learn the importance of compassion, empathy, and action. In recent years, we have expanded our community service programs, partnering with local organizations that address pressing social issues such as homelessness, hunger, and environmental sustainability. These experiences ignite a passion for social justice and inspire students to become agents of change.

Quality Education: A cornerstone of our mission is providing a rigorous academic program that prepares our students for

success in college and beyond. Our dedicated faculty is committed to inspiring a love of learning and fostering critical thinking skills. In the past five years, we have invested in state-of-the-art technology, expanded our course offerings, and strengthened our college counseling program to better support our students' academic and personal goals. Our new Centers of Innovation, equipped with cutting-edge technology and resources, provide students with opportunities to explore their passions and develop innovative solutions to realworld problems.

Respect for All Persons: Respect is the foundation of all human relationships. We treat each other with dignity and kindness, recognizing the inherent worth of every individual. By promoting a culture of respect, we create a safe and supportive learning environment where students can thrive. In recent years, we have implemented character education programs and conflict resolution training to instill values of respect, empathy, and responsibility in our students. This culture of respect empowers students to embrace their individuality and pursue their passions with confidence.

Just last week, I had the privilege of speaking with a student who had been deeply inspired by our CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation. They shared their excitement about a new project they were working on, a device designed to improve the lives of patients with a specific medical condition. This student's passion and dedication are a testament to the transformative power of our Lasallian education.

As we move forward, we are committed to the execution of our five-year strategic plan, which will further enhance our academic programs, strengthen our community, and deepen our commitment to Lasallian values. By focusing on innovation, collaboration, and student-centered learning, we will continue to inspire our students to reach their full potential.

Let us embrace these principles with renewed vigor and commitment. Together, we can build a brighter future for ourselves and for generations to come. Let us inspire our students to dream big, work hard, and make a positive impact on the world.

Sincerely,

‘LIFE CHANGING’ San Miguel Scholarship Makes a

When recent graduates are asked how they feel about earning a place at La Salle via the need-based San Miguel Scholarship, this is what they say:

“I think it (the San Miguel Scholarship) kind of meant everything. It kind of changed my life a lot because I was looking at completely different high schools in completely different areas, and it would have been a lot harder for me to do well at those high schools because they simply just didn't have the same resources as La Salle,” - Carlos Nuevo, Class of 2022, now an electrical engineering major at Northwestern University.

Lasting Impact

“It really meant a lot to me when I was a San Miguel scholar because college is not easy at all. The [Scholarship] and [La Salle] opened so many pathways to me. It helped me financially, it helped me educationally, it honestly got me ahead of the game than other people. It gave me an education that others were not able to have,” - Renee Pelongco, class of 2023, now a nursing major at Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles.

Every year La Salle welcomes an incoming freshman class composed of a unique and diverse body of students, some of whom have received the need-based

CARLOS NUEVO ’22

San Miguel Scholarship. Unlike most need-based financial aid programs, the San Miguel Scholarship sets itself apart with its comprehensive approach to providing a holistic education - the scholarship covers all aspects of schooling for deserving students. That means uniforms, textbooks, technology like iPads and calculators, sports team fees, milestone events like study abroad and Prom are provided as part of the scholarship. Providing for all aspects of the La Salle College Preparatory experience allows students to grow into their full physical, mental, emotional, social and spiritual potential, without the worries of a financial burden.

THE VALUE OF THE SAN MIGUEL SCHOLARSHIP

But how does the scholarship impact students and why does it matter? Because the San Miguel Scholarship provides deserving students in need with a pathway to a high quality education that opens doors for them at the most critical time in their lives. Because the best point of leverage to change someone’s life trajectory can be in high school, rather than earlier or later in life.

“I think it's so much more important to have that financial aid support in high school because that's what prepares you for college. I know people that have gotten the QuestBridge scholarship [a college scholarship Carlos also earned] and because they came from underserved high schools, then they end up struggling in college,” Carlos explains. But Carlos transitioned from an underserved middle school, and because he received an excellent education in high school at La Salle, he’s observed that he’s better equipped to handle the rigor of college than some of his peers. “If you think about the value of a donation, it carries the most value in high school,” he states.

And because the importance of a higher education has been well studied, the San Miguel scholarship, which offers a pathway to a college preparatory education, is the gift that keeps on giving, where every dollar that funds the scholarship program has a compounding downstream impact in each scholar’s lives.

RENEE PELONGCO ’23

According to a study by the Public Policy Institute of California, as of 2021, a worker with a bachelor’s degree earned on average 62% more over the course of their life than a peer whose highest level of education is high school.

This matters, because when people earn more, they are more apt to pave a new path for themselves, their families, and their communities.

But the San Miguel Scholarship is so much more than access to an excellent education. It gives underserved students access to programs that ignite their passion in service, travel, linguistics, and making connections with people who don’t sound or look like them. All of these experiences enrich their lives and forge experiences that prepare them for what it’s like to work and contribute to a society with a sense of service, purpose and respect for all others - key pillars of the faith teachings at La Salle.

LAUNCHING PASSIONATE STUDENTS

Nathan Rivas, who graduated from La Salle in 2023, was a deserving student so dedicated to his education that he awoke at 5:30 am daily just to make the long public transportation trek from his home in northeast Los Angeles to east Pasadena.

But those early mornings were worth it because Nathan found a love for linguistics, a passion encouraged by former English teacher Mr. Daryl Oliver ’11. Nathan’s passion for linguistics spills out of him when he speaks, as he bounces from fact to fact about how history, culture and language intersect.

Now, he’s at the University of Riverside, studying linguistics, in part to his hard work and the chance the San Miguel Scholarship gave him to attend a college preparatory education.

NATHAN RIVAS ’23

CULTIVATE THE WHOLE PERSON

Renee Pelongco ’23, who speaks softly, cherishes the many ways she was involved in student life and extracurriculars. In addition to joining clubs and the National Honor Society, she became Assistant Commissioner of Spiritual Life where she’d help out with student prayer services and Mass. “So [being involved at La Salle] also taught me leadership. It also helped me land in my work-study job because I had so much experience in the liturgy world,” she says. Her experience working in Campus Ministry also helped her gain confidence and communication skills, she adds, something she’ll need in her nursing career.

A large part of being a nurse, Renee says, is treating all people with care, no matter what they look like. “I think one of [La Salle’s pillars] that really stuck out to me Freshman year was ‘inclusive community,’ but also at the same time, 'concern for the poor and social justice,” she explains. “Because nursing in the long run, we’re going to take care of everyone. You have to be really inclusive. We need to treat people equally,” she adds.

Nathan was also deeply impacted by this pillar of La Salle’s teaching, and he also saw it in action. “The first thing I noticed is that [La Salle] seemed very diverse, much more diverse than my old middle school, where there was one specific set of people. At La Salle, I found myself very quickly learning to socially adapt within the first two months. I was in a completely new community where people were already very friendly with me from day one.”

That inclusivity, Nathan says, gave him the social confidence and optimism to make friends and be comfortable in being himself. That social acuity has taken him far in college. “Over here at UC Riverside, I was able to make friends relatively fast. I was able to talk to a lot of people,” he adds. That gregariousness and confidence in social matters has led Nathan to become a resident advisor in his dorm hall as he continues to work on his linguistics degree.

A CURRICULUM FOCUSED ON MAKING EFFICIENT, HIGH IMPACT

Carlos attends Northwestern University on a track to complete a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering and a minor in data science, in addition to a Master of Science degree program.

When he thinks back to why he feels grateful he chose to attend La Salle, it was because the high school edged out the competition with the kinds of coursework he could take. “It gave me a better education. If I had taken the other [scholarship] offers at the other high schools, I simply wouldn't have been prepared [for college], and I probably wouldn't have been prepared enough to score as well as I did on those AP exams, either,” he said.

Ordinarily, the combined BS and MS program at Northwestern takes five years to complete, but because so many of Carlos’ science AP courses transferred seamlessly to Northwestern, he’s due to graduate in four years, shaving off one complete year of his studies; that’s the power of the San Miguel Scholarship and an education at La Salle.

“Oh, my gosh! Most of the science courses that I took at La Salle set me up for college” says Renee, when she names the advanced placement courses she took in biology, and chemistry and medical terminology and anatomy coursework out of what would become La Salle’s CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation.

A LIFE OF SERVICE AND PURPOSE

For these three scholars, the San Miguel Scholarship has propelled them to go far and learn in fields where they can give back. Renee’s not sure where she’ll end up in nursing, but knows that caring for others at the bedside is where she’s meant to be. Nathan’s pursuing his passion in linguistics and beams at the opportunity to study abroad in Japan, which he aims to do in the summer of 2025. And for Carlos, his dream job is applying his engineering know-how at JPL, working in the San Gabriel community, in the same aerospace field as his grandfather.

The impact of the San Miguel Scholarship program is hugely evident as La Salle students take their journey through high school into higher education and future career fields.

La Salle is Full STEAM Ahead with Strategic Plan

Over the last three years, La Salle’s been guided by its Five Year Strategic Plan, which has provided a holistic path to enhance its programs for students, facilities on campus, and tactics to attract and retain top-tier faculty.

What is the Five-Year Strategic Plan?

The main goal of the strategic plan is to ensure that La Salle is a school of choice in the San Gabriel Valley, and one that leads students to desirable and competitive careers in the future.

What improvements and advances have been made?

Since the 2021 school year, La Salle has made investments in core educational and vocational areas, building Centers of Innovation: the CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation, The Center for Cultural Perspectives, the Center for Cinematic Arts, and the Center for Linguistic Exploration.

These centers are “designed to foster hands-on learning and creative exploration, positioning students for college and career success. The goal is to deliver the highest quality education by adapting to an ever-evolving world,” says La Salle school president, Perry Martin.

Each Center focuses on a different discipline, and sometimes the learning opportunities overlap, allowing

students new and exciting interdisciplinary study opportunities. It’s possible for students to create robotics in the brand new Center for Discovery and Design that might help out a peer’s biomedical project in the CARLOW Center for Medical Innovation, like a prosthesis limb or hand, for example.

Breaking ground on the newest Center of Innovation: Center for Discovery and Design

Israel Barrera, Director of the Center for Discovery and Design, started work on it in May of this year and officially opened it to students during the current fall semester. Students interested in engineering, technology, robotics, and related fields can join the Center for more extracurricular learning in these fields.

And although it is a nascent Center of Innovation, Barrera has big plans for the next 1-3 years.

“We aim to expand our after-school programs, with the next step being the launch of an aerospace team. I also plan to introduce a certification pathway that consists of 3-4 courses (we currently offer two) to demonstrate students’ foundational skills and knowledge in engineering,” Barrera said.

The Full STEAM Ahead campaign launched with a goal

to raise $500,000 to support the growth of the science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) fields at La Salle. The campaign was a success, bringing in the full amount, with one gift of $250,000 from the Ahmanson Foundation and the other $250,000 raised by La Salle’s Board of Regents.

These gifts were directly allocated to renovating a 4,000 square foot space into the state-of-the-art Discovery and Design Lab, where students have access to curriculum and tools for hands-on learning in robotics, fluid mechanics, aerospace engineering and flight training.

But why a focus on the STEAM disciplines? Because they’re growing at a rapid rate, often offer steadier employment, and usually much higher salaries than other professional fields.

According to the National Science Foundation, “workers in STEM occupations experience lower rates of unemployment and higher salaries than those in nonSTEM occupations, and many STEM fields are expected to grow.” And the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the average wage for a STEM occupation in the U.S. in 2023 was just over $100k, where the median salary for an American in a non-STEM occupation was just over $46k.

For President Martin, investing in the various Centers of Innovation is a way to modernize La Salle’s offerings for families seeking a high quality education.

“The initiatives foster a dynamic and passionate learning environment, encouraging students to explore highinterest fields, pushing their academic boundaries, and engaging in hands-on research. Parents and students alike will see increased value in their education as La Salle positions itself as a leader in the modern STEAMfocused world,” Martin said.

How do the Centers of Innovation support La Salle’s ongoing mission to serve students?

The Centers of Innovation give students more ways to learn and express their passions. The enhanced layer of study at the Centers of Innovation can open doors to internships, and provide a leg-up on preparing students for what they’d like to pursue in college and beyond.

“These efforts are not just upgrades but vital steps toward securing La Salle’s place as a leader in 21stcentury education. Every strategic move is deeply rooted in the goal of offering transformative learning experiences that shape well-rounded individuals ready for future academic and career success,” Martin added.

Among other commendations, Major Meier was awarded the Air Medal seven times, the Aerial Achievement Medal, the Air Force Commendation Medal twice, and the Air Force Combat Action Medal. In one specific mission in Afghanistan, where he saved over 50 ground troops and protected innocent civilians with his tactical patience and aerial skills, Ben was the U.S. Air Forces in Europe nominee for the Exceptional Pilot Award, at which time he was considered in the top 10 of approximately 12,000 Air Force pilots.

Major Benjamin Meier passed away on September 29, 2015 in Lancaster, CA. He was struck by a hit-and-run driver while on his morning run. Ben is survived by his mother Ann

During the month of April, Alumni were encouraged to:

• Volunteer! Projects were organized in Pasadena, the Bay Area, Orange County, San Diego and New York City.

• Get involved in a service project in their own community

THE LANCER CHALLENGE

La Salle ended fiscal year 2023 with an alumni giving participation rate of 9.65%. We are most grateful for the 714 alumni donors who donated to their alma mater! Our goal this fiscal year was to reach 10% by June 30, 2024, and to see which graduating class comes out on top in the Lancer Challenge.

WHAT IS THE LANCER CHALLENGE?

A giving competition that challenges each class to increase the number of donors who contribute to La Salle over the fiscal year (July 1, 2023-June 30, 2024).

HOW DOES IT WORK?

Every gift matters. No gift is too small to count for your class. The competition is based on the number of alums from each class who give, not the dollar amount.

*All tax-deductible gifts made to La Salle will impact your class participation scoree.

HOW DO YOU MAKE A GIFT?

There are several ways to make a gift and boost your class’ standing:

1. Give online at www.lasallehs.org/annualfund

2. Mail your gift. Checks made payable to “La Salle College Prep”.

3. Call 626.696.4362 to make your gift over the phone.

IS THERE A PRIZE?

The Class with the highest number of donors at fiscal year-end (June 30th) will receive:

• Placement on the Lancer Challenge Championship Banner in the Gym

• Recognition in Lancer Magazine

• Bragging rights (and they are priceless!)

Class standings are updated regularly online at www.lasallehs.org/challenge
