La Salle Parent Newsletter For Parents and Friends of La Salle College Preparatory • Pasadena • California April 2020

Principal Ideas Hello. Well, this is a newsletter article unlike any I have written before. In most of my monthly newsletter articles I am able to talk about the successes of the last month and give you a preview of all the events that are coming up in the next. After all, we all know, the La Salle campus is never quiet; there is always something going on. Well, that was the case until March 13, 2020. Courtney R. Kassakhian Principal

March 13, 2020 was our last day of on-campus learning until at least May 4. It has been an incredible change that has been necessary, but nonetheless difficult for all: employees, parents, and most importantly, our students. One month earlier I don’t think any of us could have imagined that we would all be staying “safer at home” for weeks at a time and be spending these beautiful spring days trying to stay at least 6 feet away from strangers as we walk our neighborhoods or grocery shop. The issue of the coronavirus still seemed pretty distant; something we should be aware of, but not an immediate threat. And now here we are, three weeks into distance learning.

Reflection Prayer St. John Baptist de La Salle

"To touch the hearts of your students is the greatest miracle you can perform." - St. John Baptist de La Salle (Med. 139.3)

Although we had been theoretically talking about the potential of having to remain off campus for some time at some point, that idea seemed unlikely...until it was inevitable. Once the decision was made to move to distance learning, our leadership team jumped into action. We know the roll-out has not been without its hiccups. Despite our talking as faculty for a few weeks about what might be our contingencies for such a change, moving literally overnight to on-line learning has been a challenge for all involved. We thank our students who participated in the distance learning survey and provided us valuable feedback that we are using to make plans for some improvements after our return to distance learning following Easter break.

April 2020 And although the students are taking the classes, we are aware that stress is shared by all in the family. This added time spent with our immediate family is a gift in so many ways. That said, going from a reality of students being at school for classes and then activities Monday-Friday from 7:45 a.m. until 5 or 6 p.m. while parents go to work to a reality where everyone in the household is together all day, every day can have its difficulties. And that doesn't take into consideration households where perhaps a college aged student is all of a sudden back home too! These things, on top of the fear of ourselves or a loved one getting sick, the reality of incomes for people in some industries being vastly reduced or even completely disappearing, and the fear of the unknown add up to a time unlike most of us have ever lived through. I think that fear of the unknown is a significant part of the difficulty; we just don’t know what is going to happen or how long this will all last. This virus is constantly growing and evolving and so making plans too far in advance doesn’t seem wise at this point. That said, here at La Salle we would like to be back in school with our students as soon as possible, given it is safe. We would all much rather be on campus with our students. We understand and are saddened that so many of them are missing activities they have been preparing for for weeks, months, or all year: spring athletics, the spring musical, World Scholars Cup, debate tournaments and more. And of course, our hearts are breaking for our seniors who are missing so much of their last year of high school. We continue to talk about what contingencies might be for celebrating our seniors depending on when we are all able to resume our normal lives again. We would love to celebrate with them at PazNaz as planned on May 29, but that is one more thing that we cannot guarantee at this point in time. Although there is fear and there is the unknown, even in times of darkness, there is light. We are happy to share that two new rays of light have joined our La Salle community in the last few weeks - Roman Lewis, born on March 20 to Mr. Tim Lewis ‘06 and his wife Noelle; and Teddy Buys born to Coach Ben Buys and his wife Carlie on March 24. We are so happy to welcome these two new additions to our Lancer family and to have them remind us that even though life has changed for the time being, there are good things and things to celebrate. Most among those things to celebrate is of course Easter. In the Kassakhian household Easter is an incredibly important and beloved holiday and I know we won’t be able to celebrate it in the way we normally would. There will likely be no cousins over for an Easter egg hunt and we won’t get dressed up in our new Easter clothes for mass. But there will still be a celebration. Celebration of family, new life and of course the loving God who sacrificed his son for us, his people. I hope that amidst this pandemic you are still able to find ways to celebrate in your own family and that, of course, you have a wonderful Easter. Sincerely, Courtney Kassakhian

La Salle Matters

Patrick Bonacci, AFSC, P'94,'97 Acting President

There is no way to begin this article other than with a sincere sense of hopefulness, gratitude and, yes, some bewilderment. It was often the case over the last weeks that each day brought a new dilemma and a new set of directives and guidelines. As a school Administration, we meet daily, most often now remotely, to keep on top of the changing environment that most affects our students. Hence, the numerous updates and messages you are receiving from Mrs. Kassakhian. I sincerely thank her and her Team for their diligence. I also thank you, our parents and students, for your patience. We know that PowerSchool, arguably the largest provider of such school services in the nation, was sometimes on overload. At times, this then made it difficult for our teachers and students to connect to the distance-learning lesson. Our excellent teachers adapted and, as needed, used different instructional methods. As of late, it appears that most of these difficulties are lessening and we hope this continues. It is clear that we, and all other schools in the County, will continue to be on mandated campus closure for at least the month of April. We will continue to keep you updated as to the expected or ordered closure period. Until we are allowed to return to normal on-site education, we will continue to use the best distancelearning practices possible to fulfil our educational promise of quality education for our students. I know, given the unrest and appropriate concerns we have all felt, that this unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic is causing an enormous level of stress for all of us. I do not want to come across as being oblivious to this; but I also want to encourage all of our La Salle community to stay calm, prayerful and resilient. Our school Chaplain and my friend, Fr. Mark Strader, the pastor of St. Luke the Evangelist Church in Temple City, recently shared with his community a reflection he read titled Pandemic Gratitude?!. The author of the reflection stated:

“Pandemic Gratitude? It seems like an odd thing to say during these times. What are we supposed to be grateful for-supply shortages, long lines, widespread cancellations, fear, uncertainty, panic? While these reactions are very

4

April 2020 understandable, let’s take a step back and look at this through our Lenten lenses. While the COVID-19 virus is causing one pandemic, how about Lent causing a pandemic of a different kind, one of gratitude and action….We are grateful for the opportunity to focus on the gifts we have been given, reflect on how to use these gifts responsibly for the furthering of God’s kingdom here on earth and then act. So, what can we, as a Lasallian School Community be grateful for and pray for? I suggest the following: • Federal, State, and Local Agencies who have taken unprecedented actions to keep us safe • La Salle leaders, faculty and staff who are working diligently and tirelessly to provide the highest quality educational experience possible for our students • Fantastic La Salle parents who are taking appropriate measures to maintain and protect their families, even in the midst of economic upheaval • Students who are facing a whole new learning environment with openness and integrity • Students who are experiencing the loss of their daily interactions with friends, team members and performing arts partners with a sense of understanding and forbearance • Medical/health providers and first responders for their bravery on our behalf • Technology that allows us to stay connected and ease our sense of loneliness and isolation • Church leaders for taking the bold step to cease liturgical services to protect our health • The awareness to not succumb to self-serving actions that are based on unfounded fear which turns us inward instead of towards those most in need within our community • The grandparents and elderly in our families for living with the threat of illness and isolation with a sense of grace that only comes from their years of experience and wisdom I know that my list is far from encompassing all that we should truly be grateful for, even in the midst of this “never in my lifetime’’ worldwide emergency. However, I humbly offer it to you as a starting point for you to make your own prayer and gratitude list. As a school leadership, we are committed to serving our Lasallian Community. As the caring community, we continue to be, I know that we are all committed to maintain our collective well-being and safety. And, I am very grateful for that. Live Jesus in Our Hearts…Forever!

Financial and Tax Planning The Planned Giving program at La Salle College Preparatory provides support to the School’s endowment through one of a number of Planned Giving instruments. The program is essential in supporting the long-term goals and Mission of our School. Though we are in the midst of the oft dreaded “tax season”, this annual chore has been somewhat deferred for many as we deal with the serious health issues across the country. Throughout the year in our Planned Giving articles and communications, it is often stated that “tax time” provides an ideal opportunity to take stock of one’s overall financial strategies and planning. Planned Giving is one such area that can be effectively addressed coincident with “tax season”. So as we address our tax issues of 2019 and look to strategize more effectively in 2020, consider the following typical opportunities afforded by a strategic use of a Planned Gift to La Salle College Preparatory. Increased giving can create additional itemized tax deductions With the higher level of standard deductions now in place, many taxpayers can utilize other tax deductions that might have been eliminated under the law by increasing charitable giving Estate tax planning still has a role in charitable giving Though the threshold for the value of estates subject to taxation has risen dramatically, there is still a concern of many donors about outliving their financial resources. Donating during one’s lifetime in such cases is thus an issue. However, by bequesting gifts from their estates, the donor’s lifetime financial worries are addressed while still supporting the long-term goals in support of the Mission of our School. Using retirement plan assets to donate Taxpayers over the age of 70 ½ can make a direct transfer from an IRA to a charity of up to $100,000. This strategy is referred to as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD). This satisfies the requirement of the taxpayer/donor to meet one’s required annual minimum IRA distribution. The distribution is NOT included in one’s income, thereby creating the possibility of a lower overall tax bill for the year. Federal tax on a portion of one’s social security benefits can be lowered or eliminated by the utilization of a QCD. In the past few years, the donations of appreciated assets such as securities and real estate held at least one year had become a popular way to support our School via a Planned Gift. The current economic situation has made this strategy far less effective for the current and shortterm outlook, though assets that have been held for a long period of time (particularly real estate) might still be considered as part of this planning opportunity. Utilizing these and other financial and tax strategies requires the counsel of one’s financial and/or tax advisor. However, these and other planned giving opportunities can be beneficial to the donor (from both financial and tax perspectives) and support the donor’s goal of supporting the Mission of our School. These planned giving strategies are available to benefit both the donor and La Salle College Preparatory. Please review the Planned Giving articles in future publications of both the Parent Newsletter and Lancer Magazine for ongoing updates in the Planned Giving Program. For more information, please contact Jon Keates, the Major Gifts Consultant at (626) 696-4344.

Parent Association Report Well, this year did not end up like any of us could have anticipated. 2020 has been a really tough start for all of us. I had to run to Arizona to bring my daughter home from college, temporarily shut down my business, and open up “home school” at our house. For all of us, this has been a completely new set of balls to keep in the air.

Jacky Samartin, P'15,'19,'21 Parent Association President

Our faculty and staff have had to quickly re-adjust to online teaching. It has had its hiccups, but I am so grateful for the great effort everyone has made. To put things in perspective, many public schools are still struggling with how to teach online and some are doing nothing at all. Nothing looks like we thought it would. Mostly for our seniors. The school is working hard to put together ideas to hopefully make something happen for our seniors. So you know, the Parent Association and the Boosters are all in to help. As soon as we have word on a plan and timing, be prepared because the call for help will go out. I have tried really hard not to focus on all of the loss and disappointment. When driving back from Arizona my daughter cried almost the entire way. She kept saying “this is the worst thing ever to happen” I gently told her that it was my hope that this will be the worst thing ever in her life. She has now adjusted to on-line school and social distancing from her friends. My junior could not be happier to be home. Makes me laugh. He finally is out of his pajamas and into a good daily routine. The hardest for me is I have had to sit still. As many of you know, that is so not me. I am learning to find the joy in the stillness. We were able to have a very successful registration. We will start to gear up for the new school year in June. We still need committee positions filled. If you are interested, please email me jsamartin@charter.net. Hopefully, we will see each other soon. Stay healthy!!! #Lancerstrong. 2020 Crystal Ball Update Dear La Salle family, On behalf of the faculty, staff and administration, I would like to express my deepest gratitude to our entire school community during these unprecedented times for their unwavering support and commitment to La Salle College Preparatory. We are not able to deliver the outstanding programs for students without the generosity of our parents, alumni, grandparents, friends and volunteers. To that end, as we continue to follow the “Stay-at-Home” order due to COVID-19, the La Salle administration, in partnership with the Crystal Ball Committee, chaired by Carol Kirland P’22, has decided to no longer hold the in-person 2020 Crystal Ball originally scheduled on May 8th at The Noor. However, in place of this, we will be holding a 2020 Crystal Ball Virtual Online Auction experience scheduled for Thursday, May 14 – Sunday May 17, 2020. Stay tuned for more details of this virtual/online event, that hopefully will also provide a means for us to share in a wonderful community experience, while supporting the school that we love so much. I would like to thank Carol and the entire Crystal Ball Committee for their dedication and hard work going back to last summer in preparation for this year’s event. In addition, I would like to thank all the sponsors, advertisers, auction donors and volunteers who continue to support the La Salle Mission through their great passion and loyalty. Thank you again for your understanding, adaptability, and commitment to La Salle College Preparatory as we look out for the health and safety of all. I pray deeply in my heart for everyone in our school community and look forward to seeing you all very soon. Live Jesus in our hearts! Patrick Bonacci, AFSC

Distance Learning March 12 marked the last of day of on campus instruction, moving us to distance learning for the meantime. While the transition was not easy, we applaud our teachers who have worked hard to change their lessons to this new format and are proud of our students for being patient and adapting to this new style of learning. Suffice to say, we miss seeing everyone on campus, but are happy everyone is safe at home.

College Center News College Counselors Tam Ly, Owen Hou '90, P'21, Marcia Yu P'21

Support from Counselors As the COVID-19 pandemic unfolds, your student’s academic advisor and college counselor are available to continue supporting them. Students may reach out to their advisor or counselor via email to set up a meeting time. One-on-one meetings will be limited to voice only, no videoconferences.

Note the new changes to the SAT, ACT, and AP Testing

Seniors Information about school visits for admitted students, deposit deadlines, and links to additional information The National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC) has an up-to-date resource page on upcoming college admission events, deposit dates, and more from colleges and universities worldwide. The tool is updated in real-time as NACAC receives input from colleges. Please also double check college websites. We suggest that seniors also review their portals and emails to be up-to-date on the most recent information about their admission status and next steps in regards to placing deposits, selecting housing, and so on. Senior Graduation Survey This month, seniors will be asked to fill out the ‘Senior Graduation Survey’ on Naviance to let us know about their college application results: acceptance/denial/waitlist, scholarship awards, and what school they plan to attend. This is very important information for the graduation program and also to help us keep accurate information that will benefit future classes. Parents, please remind your son or daughter to submit their ‘Statement of Intent to Register’ (SIR) to the college where they plan to attend by the deadline established by that college and decline other admission offers as soon as possible so that other students may be invited off the waitlist.

April 2020 Juniors College Planning Under normal circumstances, at this time we would be advising juniors to visit schools, attend college fairs and events in our area offered by the schools they are interested in. Since this is not possible at the moment, we suggest that juniors shift their research even more so online. Below are very helpful websites to assist with your research: • Naviance - Allows students to customize college searches, manage the list of colleges students are thinking about and eventually move them to colleges they are applying to. Accessible via lasallehs.org / Quick Links / Naviance • Youvisit.com - Take virtual tours of the campus • Niche.com - Customize college searches based upon a set of criteria setup by the user • Campusreel.com - Student generated videos from the schools they attend • Bigfuture.collegeboard.org - customizable college search tool through College Board A list of upcoming virtual college admission events, including virtual college tours, can be found under College Counseling at www.lasallehs.org/collegecounseiing Meetings with college counselors for college planning College counselors have met with almost all juniors who have completed their College Planning Survey before March 15th. Students who have not yet met with their respective counselor may schedule a phone conference. Counselors will meet with all students regardless of them completing the survey; however, their responses help counselors to best prepare for a productive meeting. Thank you for encouraging your son or daughter to complete the survey if they have not done so already. Standardized Tests updates SAT The College Board, which administers the SAT and AP tests, is continually updating its list of test centers closing and location changes. SAT — The SAT for May 2 has been canceled. Registered students will receive refunds. ACT ACT has rescheduled its April 4 national test date to June 13 across the US. All students registered for the April 4 test date will receive an email from ACT informing them of the postponement and instructions for free rescheduling to June 13 or a future national test date. Please check the ACT website for updates. AP On March 20, 2020, the College Board put out that the 2019-20 AP exams will be 45min athome tests. Students will be able to take these streamlined exams on any device they have access to—computer, tablet, or smartphone. Taking a photo of handwritten work will also be an option. To be fair to all students, some of whom have lost more instructional time than others, the exam will only include topics and skills most AP teachers and students have already covered in class by early March.
