Principal Ideas Hello. November is here and, believe it or not, we are heading into the homestretch of the first semester.

Reflection Prayer St. John Baptist de La Salle
“The young should be able to see in your wisdom how they should behave.” -Meditation 132.1
October was a marking point for the academic program, with quarter grades going out mid-month. But with the first full week of November comes the reality that there are only five weeks of classes before final exams! These weeks will go by quickly! If your child is doing well, encourage them to keep it up for the rest of the semester. If your child is not achieving their potential at this point, talk to them about what changes they can make to achieve the grades they will be happy with and proud of at the end of the semester. Student Success Workshop meets every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 2:30 to 3:30, giving students a place to work on homework after school with faculty members; and Academic Support occurs at least once a week, giving students the opportunity to meet one on one with their teachers. Please encourage your students to take advantage of these resources. Last month was filled with extra and co-curricular events. I’d like to thank Ms. Strouse and all the faculty and students involved in student life for a wonderful homecoming week. Welcome Home was filled with school spirit and fun activities. And as usual, being a Lasallian school, the spirit week also included an advocacy piece and this year that was foster care. The sense of advocacy and service also continued in our mentor program last month, as mentor classes collected food and money to create Boxes of Love in support of military families. The School community filled 100 Thanksgiving Food Boxes and was able to give the "For Families of Active Military" organization $2,941.64 for the purchase of turkeys and other dinner trimmings. Our students also had opportunities to get off campus and grow closer to God through two special activities in October. Our first group of junior students attended their retreat led by Mr. O’Connor and the rest of the retreat team. And the month ended with a group of junior and senior students, accompanied by Ms. Frisina, joining students from Cathedral High School in Los Angeles on El Otro Lado, a border immersion trip done in coordination with yet

another Lasallian school - San Miguel High School in Tucson. October also marked the end of the regular season for most of our fall sports. Per usual, there was much success among our many sports teams this last season: - Boys' and girls' cross country teams headed into the final week of the season with both individual and team postseason aspirations on the line. League finals will be held at La Mirada Park on Wednesday, November 6th. - With one regular season game left to play, Football has made an enormous comeback after a very tough 2018 season and are currently 6-3 overall and 1-2 in league play. The team has a strong possibility of qualifying for the CIF-SS Playoffs. All playoff brackets will be released on Sunday November 3rd. - Girls' golf concluded their regular season with six girls competing in the league individual championship tournament. The Del Rey League Champions posted a 10-4 overall record and will begin CIF-SS playoff competition on November 5th at Los Serranos Golf Club. - Girls' tennis concluded their regular season while competing in the Del Rey League singles and doubles tournament. The Lancers finished 3rd overall in league and have earned a spot in the CIF-SS playoffs. - Girls' volleyball has concluded their season after advancing to the second round of the CIF-SS Division 3 playoffs. The team posted a 28-8 overall record and a 2nd place finish in the very competitive Del Rey League. - Boys' water polo wrapped up their season while battling through the always tough Prep League. The Lancers fought hard throughout the season and look to build upon their growth under first year head coach Ian Castillo. And lastly, October brought La Salle a Queen! For the second time in three years, the title of Rose Queen is being held by a La Salle student, with Camille Kennedy crowned Rose Queen on October 22. Queen Camille and the Royal Court will be ambassadors for the Tournament of Roses, representing the organization at public appearances and events throughout Pasadena and the greater Los Angeles area. Congratulations to Camille! Now November is here and we have just as many exciting events happening this month as last, and in a shorter amount of time than in the past. As you should have noted, for the first time, La Salle will be closed for the entirety of Thanksgiving week. We hope this gives those of you who will be traveling long distances to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with family or friends more time to do so and less stress while traveling. Our annual sophomore retreat and service days will be November 4 and 5. A few days after the retreat, our fall play, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, opens. About 50 students make up the cast and crew of this musical production with an ending that will change every night depending on audience feedback. The production opens Saturday, November 9 and runs on the weekends through Saturday, November 23.

And just before Thanksgiving, six of our Academic Decathletes will be traveling to Yale, representing La Salle in the World Scholars Cup Tournament of Champions. Good luck to Christina Chen, Franklin Cheng, Matt Day, Adam Lewczuk, Ewan Painter, Colby Stenzel and coach John Erb. And of course, one of the most important events of the month is our annual Open House on Sunday, November 17. All of us La Salle community members - parents, staff, faculty, alumni and students know what an incredible place La Salle is. Open House is our opportunity to share that with others who are not yet part of the La Salle community. If you have friends or family with children currently looking at high schools, be sure to let them know about our Open House and invite them to attend. The event is 12 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. and visitors will be able to get information on all of the academic and co-curricular programs La Salle has to offer. November and December also bring multiple opportunities for parents to come to La Salle for meetings and educational presentations. The first is a parent education event with Dr. Ani Khatchadourian, PsyD on November 4. Dr. Ani will discuss how parents can promote executive functioning skills in their child, how to communicate with their child about school, how to identify signs of extreme stress and anxiety, and how to intervene. The event will take place on Monday, November 4th from 6 pm to 7 p.m. in the BLC. We hope to see you there. The following week we will have our November Parent Association Meeting. PA meetings generally take place the second Tuesday of every month at 6:30 p.m. in the BLC and are followed by our Academic, Arts, and Athletic Boosters meetings. The special guest for our November meeting will be our Athletic Director, Mr. Brian Walsh. Additionally, each year we use our November meeting as an early holiday celebration and therefore have full dinner available. If you have never been to a PA meeting, consider making this one your first. And if you are regular, we look forward to seeing you! Our last upcoming parent event is a presentation by MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) on December 4. Titled “The Power of Parents,” this 40 minute education and prevention presentation is targeted towards parents of high school students with the goal to help parents start the conversation about the dangers of underage drinking and drugs and empower parents to have ongoing, intentional conversations about the consequences of underage drinking. The event will be at 6:30 p.m. in the Grinstead Theatre. With the holiday season upon us with its parties and two weeks off school where students may be at home unsupervised for much of the day, this is the perfect time to have a talk with your students about this important issue. And of course, we end the month of November with Thanksgiving. Of all the holidays that we celebrate each year, Thanksgiving is my favorite. For so many other holidays we give things: gifts at Christmas, cards at Valentine’s Day, candy at Easter. At Thanksgiving all we are asked to give is thanks. And, if we are fortunate enough, we get to give thanks while eating wonderful food around tables filled with loved ones. I know I have much to be thankful for this year, including the opportunity to work with all of you here at La Salle. May you be fortunate to spend your Thanksgiving Day with your family and friends and enjoy a Thanksgiving meal to celebrate your own blessings.

La Salle Matters
Patrick Bonacci, AFSC, P'94,'97 Acting President

A few weeks ago, Assistant Principal Tina Bonacci disseminated to our academic advisors and counselors a recent article written in the Washington Post by Jennifer Breheny Wallace. I want to share with you some of the substantive points from her article because I found them to be very thought-provoking given that the student profile the article describes could refer to many of our students. Ms. Wallace first reports on a consensus study of American children published this summer by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine, which adds youths in “high achieving schools” to their list of “at-risk” groups, along with kids living in poverty and foster care, recent immigrants and those with incarcerated parents. Similarly, a report written last year by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation came to a similar conclusion when it named the top environmental conditions harming adolescent wellness — among them were poverty, trauma, discrimination and “excessive pressure to excel,” often, but not exclusively, occurring in affluent communities. This report went on to state that “It may sound counterintuitive, even perverse, to put relatively affluent kids in the same category as our country’s most vulnerable youths. While the stressors are markedly different, researchers are finding that both are “at risk” for elevated levels of chronic stress that can affect health and well-being.” The research that Ms. Wallace reported on that I found most concerning was from Suniya Luthar, a professor of psychology at Arizona State University. Professor Luthar stated “When parents ask me where all of this pressure is coming from, I ask them: Where is it not?” She went on to state that, “The unrelenting pressure on students in highachieving schools comes from every direction, from overly invested parents who want A’s, coaches who want wins for their own personal reputations and school administrators who feel pressured to get high standardized scores in their school…” Luthar’s studies have found that…“adolescents
November 2019
in high-achieving schools can suffer significantly higher rates of anxiety, depression, substance abuse and delinquent behaviors, at least two to three times the national average. Some warning signs, like excessive peer envy and cheating, tend to emerge in middle school, but other symptoms of stress are being seen as early as elementary school. When a child’s sense of self-worth is dependent on what they achieve, it can lead to anxiety and depression. Anxiety can come from worrying about keeping up with or outshining peers, while depression can be caused by a failure to achieve.” (Note: Luthar’s study precedes the recent Varsity Blues Scandal, but my assumption is that the outrageous behavior of the parents involved in the reported unethical, and illegal activities would certainly validate her research.) This is a lot for us to think about as parents as well as teachers and administrators. I strongly encourage you, as parents, to be very mindful of your expectations for your student. Every class your student takes does not and should not have to be an AP course. Every weekend does not and should not have be taken up with club sports. Every conversation you have with your student does not and should not be about your student’s college profile. I certainly want to congratulate our Principal, Mrs. Kassakhian, and her Administrative Team for making sure that this topic of stress, anxiety and overall wellness is at the forefront of their thinking and conversations. The faculty/staff retreat prior to the beginning of this school year was facilitated by Ms. Fourre, the Director of the Heart Matters Project. The retreat centered on the importance of taking personal ownership of one’s own wellbeing. And, as one would expect when teachers are involved, it also moved into the realm of stress and stressors for our students. For our January faculty/staff retreat we will continue this theme with a reflection day facilitated by our former Visitor (Provincial), Br. Mark Murphy, FSC. Br. Mark will focus on our own unique Lasallian Formation and Lasallian Spirituality within a context of personal wellness. Br. Mark will draw on his research of topics related to Christian Mindfulness Meditation and one’s personal journey to be aware of God’s Presence. And, I have no doubt that the wellness of our students will be part of his reflection since the care of our students is the very fundamental core concept of all Lasallian Formation. The blessings we all receive from just being with our wonderful students is such an unsurpassed gift from God. We adults have to be ver diligent that we do not in any way cause harm to our students because of our own over-the-top insistence on them being the best at everything or the expectation that they always must excel above others. Such pressure is not appropriate or truly essential in the long run for our students or for us adults. Live Jesus In Our Hearts………….Forever!

Parent Association Report Happy November!!! I can’t believe I am saying that! It sure doesn’t seem like fall. Maybe because it is 90 degrees still! First Off, congratulations to Camille kennedy for being crowned Tournament of Roses 2020 Queen. We are so proud to have another Queen from La Salle!!!
Jacky Samartin, P'15,'19,'21 Parent Association President
We had a busy October. The “Chili Cook-off” at the Fall Gathering hailed Freshman Parent Robert Silva as the official La Salle Chilli Cook-off Winner! It was a very fun event and we had some delicious chili. Our October Parent Association Meeting featured our Director of Counselling Tam Ly. She went over all of the programs we are having to help assist our students with the stress and anxiety of their teenage years. We also received an update from Mr. Bonacci on the President’s search. Our minutes from the meeting are posted under the Parent Association tab on the website. Also, the Friday before each Parent Association meeting, you can find the upcoming meeting agenda. The Arts Department is gearing up for The Fall performance of “The Mystery of Edwin Drood. It is an interactive comedy based on Charles Dickens’ unfinished final novel. Please see the school calendar for all performance dates and times. If you have not attended a school performance, you are missing out. We have some amazingly talented young students. You won’t be disappointed. The Arts Boosters are again selling the “La Salle” coffee. Orders are due back by November 15. Academic Boosters have been equally busy. They have voted to grant the following teacher wish list items: RoadTrip Nation for the Counselling department, a variety of robotics equipment and registration fees for competitions, a die-cut machine for Student Life department, a PCR machine for the Biology department and a Bailey clay

extruder and die kit for all the studio art and sculpture classes. Many thanks to our Academics boosters for all of this. They also had a Mock SAT and Mock ACT here at La Salle from Revolution Prep. Athletics is very busy winding down fall sports. Girl’s Volleyball is still in the hunt this year again! We have scheduled Athletic Director Brian Walsh to speak at our next Parent Association meeting. He will be reviewing the highlights of our Fall sport season and giving updates on our Winter sport’s program. Mothers of Alumni met to send out care packages to our Class of 2019 graduates. They all will receive either at their college dorms or homes. Mother’s of Alumni Luncheon is coming up on Friday, November 15 at Altadena Country Club. It is a day of shopping and lunch. Information is on the website. We are heading into a very busy time with school and the holidays approaching. We are going to start posting volunteer opportunities on the first Friday of the month so you can plan ahead. We have Open house coming up on Sunday, November 12, Adopt-a-Family on December 12, Christmas tree distribution on December 12, and Faculty Appreciation Luncheon on Thursday, December 14. My best advice is to get half of your hours done before years end. Our next Parent Association Meeting will be on Tuesday, November 12. 6:00pm hospitality, 6:30pm meeting, and 7:30pm Booster meetings. This meeting is traditionally hosted by the President of the school and Mr. Bonacci will be hosting. We are having a barbeque dinner and a little wine to celebrate the upcoming holidays! Please join us. Our meetings are a great way to stay connected to what is going on at school and you also get a service hour for attending. Wishing you and your Family a very Blessed Thanksgiving Holiday. We have so much to be thankful for! Jacky Samartin P’15, P’19, P’21 Parent Association President

Homecoming 2019 This year's Homecoming Theme was "Welcome Home". Hallways were decorated to resemble the feeling of being at home, such as Lancer Pride and Living Room vibes. Each day featured different dress up attire, such as Pajama and Homies Day. In the amphitheatre, there were various activities, like facepaint and Name that Movie! The week culminated with the Homecoming Football Game, featuring the Alumni Athletic Award Presentation and the coronation of Homecoming King and Queen. To top it all off, the Lancers beat Victor Valley (50-32).

Helping Yourself by Helping La Salle Our School is blessed with a growing number of financial supporters who through their creative and generous giving has assisted La Salle’s endowment and supported the capital improvements that are now a part of our beautiful campus or are on the drawing board. Our School is most appreciative for this ongoing and growing support. The end of 2019 is drawing near, and many of us will begin to address year-end tax and financial planning issues. By taking advantage of financial opportunities that provide you both tax and financial/investment benefits, you can also help support the Mission of La Salle High School. A “Planned Gift” (as opposed to an “annual gift”) is a donation to La Salle High School made in one’s lifetime or at death that is a part of a donor’s overall financial and/or estate plan. Such gifts enhance the endowment of our School by supporting and ensuring the commitment to its Mission. The following is a quick review of some of the most popular year end planned giving strategies that provide the donor tax and financial benefit while supporting our Mission. Gifts payable at death (a bequest or designating our School as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement fund) are not subject to estate taxation. Taxpayers age 70 ½ or older can receive tax benefits from having one’s required annual IRA distribution directed to La Salle High School. Donating appreciated assets (real estate and securities as examples) that you have owned for more than one year will avoid federal and state capital gains taxes on the appreciation while creating a tax deduction. Our School is in the process of formalizing a new strategy for Planned Giving. The details of this will be addressed in the coming months, so look for more information about this early in 2020. These are a some of the opportunities available in the world of Planned Giving. Determining what type of Planned Gift is appropriate for you depends on your personal financial goals and the various circumstances that encompass your personal situation. IN SUMMARY La Salle College Preparatory can provide more information, both generically and specifically, regarding the benefits available through Planned Giving. For more information, please contact Kevin Delaney, the Vice President for Advancement at (626) 696-4318.

The UC System consists of 9 schools up and down the state.
College Application Filing Deadlines Please be reminded that November 30 is the last day to apply to the University of California (UC) and the California State University (CSU) systems. Please note that both systems make no exceptions for late submissions. In order to avoid frustration, do not wait until November 30 to file electronically. The servers may be very slow accepting applications due to the high traffic on the website in the last days. We recommend students to submit their applications before the Thanksgiving holiday. Please pay close attention to the application requirements and deadlines for your specific colleges – many colleges have unique deadlines. Please encourage your student to have a balanced list of colleges that they are applying to, meaning that they have safety, realistic and stretch goals in their list. We also encourage parents and students to have a discussion about what colleges are a good fit in terms of affordability. Most colleges offer a net price calculator on their websites that provides an initial estimate in terms of the cost of attendance, as it varies from family to family based upon factors such as income and family size. Standardized Testing (Seniors) The last standardized test date that most colleges will accept in their admissions process is December (December 7th SAT and December 14th for the ACT). Please be aware that the last day to register for the December SAT and ACT is November 8th. Senior Meetings with College Counselors College counselors are meeting with all seniors who have submitted their Senior College Planning Survey to discuss college opportunities. Please encourage your child to complete the survey if he or she has not already done so. FAFSA and Cal Grant GPA Verification The 2019-2020 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student
16
November 2019 Aid) has been open for submission since October 1, 2019. Parents will complete it using their financial information from the 2018 tax year. Please check with your student’s college of interest for the FAFSA deadline. The priority deadline is March 2, 2020 but we encourage families to complete it as soon as possible. The FAFSA can be completed at https://fafsa.ed.gov/. La Salle has electronically submitted GPAs to the California Student Aid Commission (CSAC) for all seniors. Cal Grant provides aid for California students planning to attend college in California. Students who submitted the FAFSA will automatically be considered for the Cal Grant. Please note, the Cal Grant GPA is different than the one on the transcript. Once students have completed their FAFSA, wait one week then create a WebGrants account at https:// mygrantinfo.csac.ca.gov/ to check the Cal Grant status. Please see your college counselor with any questions. Financial Planning for College Families can use the SmartTrack College Funding tool to estimate their out of pocket costs and view what families with similar financial profiles received from each college. The free quick online assessment includes a complimentary consultation phone meeting at 818-552-0800, just mention La Salle. We encourage 9th and 10th grade families to start this process now. To start using this resource, click here to register for your free account. Class of 2021 – February 8th ACT All juniors will register on November 13th to take the ACT at La Salle in February 8th, 2020. College Counselors will assist with the registration. Please note, La Salle has already paid for this test and there is no expense on your part. Should your student decide not to take the ACT this academic year, we will have to bill the cost back to you. Classes of 2021 and 2022 - College Tours We are offering the following college tours in the spring: San Diego College Tour February 21, 2020 University of San Diego, UC San Diego, San Diego State University Bay Area College Tour March 16-17, 2020 Universities to be announced in December Finishing Each Semester Strong Please encourage your student to finish each semester at their best academically. By doing so, students are better prepared for more advanced coursework and for standardized tests, which will eventually translate into a competitive application to their colleges of choice in the future as well as being a contender for college scholarships. Even if your student is a senior, it is still important to be at their best because their first semester grades are sent to private schools they are applying to and all colleges expect that their applicants will demonstrate a strong senior year in high school.

Dia de los Muertos Through the direction of SeĂąora Mendez, the Spanish and Art Departments got together to create a beautiful Ofrenda, an offering for those who have departed. Historically celebrated by Mexicans, and now through other Latino communities, this tradition remembers, celebrates, and honors the dead. It is believed that on this day, the souls of the departed come back to visit their loved ones.

All Saints Day On November 1, we celebrated All Saints Day with a liturgy. This year centered around the theme of "anyone can be a saint". Father Mark challenged us to get to know a new saint - but more importantly, to get to know and understand better the people around us because saints can also be amongst us. Music for the Masses sang a beautiful Litany of the Saints.
