FOR PARENTS AND FRIENDS OF LA SALLE HIGH SCHOOL • PASADENA • CALIFORNIA • SEPTEMBER 2016
Principal Ideas Learn•Serve•Lead
Hello parents and friends. Our 2016-17 school year is well under way! Each new school year brings new people and changes to a school, so I’d like to take this opportunity to welcome new faculty and staff to our community and to explain some of the changes that have taken place this year that will affect you and your student(s).
New Faculty We are blessed to have some wonderful new people joining our community this year: Ozzie Barrero will be teaching Spanish in the World Languages Department. Although he is new to teaching at La Salle, he has been a part of the La Salle community as the father of two La Salle graduates. He has been in education for 20 years, having taught Spanish at St. Francis High School and, most recently, at Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy.
John Erb joined our faculty last spring and we are happy to have him joining us permanently as a teacher in the English department and Academic Decathlon coach. Mr. Erb most recently taught English at Mary Star of the Sea High School in San Pedro. Julia Frisina also joined the La Salle faculty last spring as a long term substitute for Mrs. Kirchoffer. We are happy to now welcome her as a regular teacher in the Religious Studies Department. Ms. Frisina is a graduate of the class of 2011. Maribel Garcia is joining our World Languages Department as an instructor in Spanish and the department chairperson. She has previously taught Spanish and had department chair responsibilities at St. John Bosco and St. Anthony High Schools. Veronica Gordon will be working with Mrs. Sanchez-Fitzgerald in the main office. Mrs. Gordon is already incredibly knowledgeable about Principal Ideas

More About Saint La Salle and The Christian Brothers The first book assigned to students was one that De La Salle wrote, titled "The Rules of Christian Decorum and Civility" (c1699). De La Salle wanted his pupils to learn how to act in the larger world. As the Brothers taught the boys reading and religion and math, so they taught them social and civil virtues, virtues very much De La Salle’s own - politeness, fairness, self-control, graciousness, prudence, and self-discipline. A teaching practice unheard off at the time. His book was republished many times in the succeeding two centuries.

La Salle as she is the wife of our football coach, Mr. Gordon, and the parent of a current sophomore. Edward Magluyan is a proud graduate of La Salle High School (1994). He is returning to his alma mater after spending many years teaching at St. Francis High School. Mr. Magluyan will be joining our Math and Science departments and will be part of the team working on STEAM initiatives. Jennifer Saparzadeh will be teaching Studio Art this year. She has been a teaching artist at the Echo Park Film center, in addition to working with students elsewhere in Los Angeles, Massachusetts and Switzerland, where she received her MFA.
New Bell Schedule DEATILS OF THE NEW A-B Schedule
In addition to new faces on campus, the new year brought a new bell schedule. Hopefully your children (and you) have been able to successfully navigate the new schedule, but I wanted to take this opportunity to explain in case there is still confusion. As in the past, our students have seven classes. This year, however, we are using an A-B schedule so that they go to every class every other day. Both A and B days begin at 8:00am and end at 2:25pm. On A days, students ALWAYS go to their periods 1, 2, 3 and 4. However, the order in which they take their classes will rotate. For instance on an A1 day, they start with period 1, followed by periods 2, 3, and then 4. On an A2 day, they start their day going to period 2, followed by periods 3, 4, and then 1. Days A3 and A4 follow the same pattern.
2
On B days students ALWAYS go to their periods 5, 6, and 7. As with the A day schedule, the order in which students go to their classes rotates. On a B5 day they begin with period 5; on a B6 day they begin with period 6; and on a B7 day they begin with period 7. Because students only have three classes on B days, we are able to use the remaining block during the school day in a variety of ways to help students achieve academic success
and provide programming for students and faculty without interrupting normal instructional time. As you look through the calendar you will note that all of our assemblies, liturgies, and rallies are on B days. With the B day schedule we are able to include these events during the fourth block of time. You will find the schedule for these days (Assembly/Liturgy Schedule) on the website and the Student Handbook and Planner.
Academic Support & Mentors On a regular B day, (no assembly, liturgy, etc.) in addition to their three classes, students also meet in their Mentor classes and have Academic Support (AS) time. As most of you know, the Mentor Program connects students with faculty and staff members and focuses on promoting the welfare of the whole person. The program works to model our ideology: Learn. Serve. Lead. The Academic Support time looks a bit different than it did last year. Hopefully your students are already getting the swing of it, and finding it helpful, but we still want your help in encouraging your student to make the best use possible of this time that has been allotted to help ensure their academic success. From 1:30 – 2:00pm on regular B days, students report to their AS classroom. During this time, they are working on academic pursuits: completing homework, studying for a quiz or test, doing assigned reading and so on. Their Academic Support teacher is able to help them in these pursuits. From 2:00 to 2:25pm is unassigned Academic Support time. During this time students may go to any class they would like to in order to get the help they most need. If they need help preparing for a math test, they can see their math teacher. If they want to talk to a counselor about college applications, they can go to the counseling center. If they need to work on a group project for religion class, they can meet their group in the library. All teachers have logs where students are signing in when visiting a classroom or office during the unassigned (2:00 - 2:25pm) time of the AS period.
ParentNewsletter
Homework Additionally, the entirety of the Academic Support period (1:30-2:25pm) is used to make-up quizzes and tests and complete missing homework. Last school year, the Academic Transition team discussed many things related to academics, one being homework. It is our philosophy that all assignments should be meaningful and given to students because they provide a learning opportunity. If a student does not complete an assignment, he or she is missing out on learning, and we don’t want that to happen. So, we are trying to eliminate missed homework (and the resulting zeros that hurt a student’s grade so much).
Academic Referral Pass If a student misses an assignment he/ she is given an Academic Referral Pass and must complete that missing assignment during the next Academic Support period. Students who still fail to turn in assignments after Academic Support time, will have a zero recorded in the gradebook. (If a student is not at the AS period due to early release for athletics or activity or because they are absent, he/she will need to turn in the missed assignment by the next class meeting). Likewise, if students miss a quiz or test, their teacher will have them make it up during the Academic Support period.
Early Dismissal Similar to Friday 2:00pm dismissals in the past, students may leave campus at 2:00pm on a regular B day if they do not fall into any of the following categories: • No missing homework or assignments to makeup • No missing quizzes or tests to make-up • No grade of C- or below in any class (Academic advisors and counselors are monitoring this). • No mandatory academic support due to academic probation • No call slip from academic advisor, counselor, or dministrator
SEPTEMBER 2016
All teachers and counselors are available in their classroom until the end of the school day at 2:25pm, so even if your child is not mandated to be in the unassigned time of the Academic Support period, we want them here! It is great training for college and the use of professors’ office hours and a wonderful opportunity for them to get one on one time with teachers. So, as you drive into school on a B day, ask them which class or classes they plan on visiting during the AS period that day. Each night at dinner, ask them if it was a B day and how they used their time.
NEW ACADEMIC SUPPORT AND MENTOR SCHEDULES
We are excited about all of the ways our students can benefit from this time dedicated to supporting them academically in the way that each of them needs. We have been doing all we can to help the students understand the new schedule and the process of Academic Support so they can all have a successful 2016-2017 school year.
Thank You On a personal note, I would like to say thank you to all the parents who came out to meet me at the reception on August 16 and to PALS for organizing the event. I have felt so welcomed here and I am so happy to be here with all of you at La Salle. I was able to get to know the faculty over the summer, and throughout these first few weeks I have been busy getting to know the students and parents. I am excited to continue doing that as we head into fall. The enthusiasm of our students for La Salle is contagious and I am anticipating an enjoyable and action packed year.

La Salle Matters
TO TEACH THE IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING A RESPECT FOR ALL PERSONS
NPR – National Public Radio – recently announced that it would no longer accept comments on its website (NPR.org). If you, like me, either don’t know what a Comments section is, don’t read them, or don’t understand the point of such an arena, this decision may not be of much significance. As an educator, however, I feel compelled to celebrate it. One might argue, as one Commenter did, that this decision “suppresses free speech.” First Amendment experts, however, would chortle at this tortured interpretation of the right to free speech since – as is true of the entire Bill of Rights – the intent has always been to prevent our elected government from hampering the people’s right to speak, to assemble, to worship; well, you get the idea. I celebrate this decision because an unintended consequence of a Comments section on any website in which people can post anonymously is incivility. Chris Cillizza of the Washington Post had this to say about the typical Commenter on his Blog: “It’s the loudest, often most obnoxious person in the room with the most time to dedicate” who dominates the Comments section. One could, I suppose, still argue: “Isn’t that an inevitable byproduct of free speech?” Yes, but free speech is protected so that the government won’t go after an identifiable person promoting an unpopular opinion – by its very nature anonymity enjoys its own protection. And, it’s the anonymity of uncivil comments which concerns me.
4
At La Salle, we spend an enormous amount of time and energy teaching the students entrusted to our care healthy ways of interacting with each other and with adults. A central component of that objective falls under the heading of “civil dis-
course.” Whether it’s in the classroom, on stage or on the playing field, we expect our students to understand that there is a right way – and a wrong way – to disagree…and there are penalties for choosing the wrong way. Penalties exist because – as any parent knows – teenagers need to learn how to observe boundaries between appropriate and inappropriate behaviors. And, while one could argue that positive reinforcement is always preferred over negative reinforcement, we need to remind ourselves that there is a reason why we adults try to avoid getting a speeding ticket on the 210 Freeway. Anonymous Commenters have no “down side” boundary maintenance for their obnoxious behavior; and, in the absence of negative reinforcement, they are passively encouraged to continue their inappropriate statements. Here’s why this ought to be a compelling concern: one Commenter on the NPR.org website, for example, had – over time - posted over 32,000 comments (I can’t imagine how one could possibly have that much available time to do that). I worry about this because we only have four years (parents have, roughly, 22 years) to inculcate in our students a respect for the other – no matter what opinion he or she holds. I’ve noted in this space and elsewhere that the college experience for young people has witnessed a tsunami of political correctness, so much so, that highly regarded professors have been subjected to humiliating shouting matches from people half their age. Ironically, the older I get the more sensitive I become to the acquired wisdom of my elders. I wish I could have acquired that sensitivity decades ago.
That having been said, I recognize, now,
ParentNewsletter

that it is incumbent upon my generation to take responsibility for educating the next generation with respect to the negotiation of the boundaries of acceptable discourse. The problem lies in the inescapable fact that the internet can undermine every positive lesson in support of civil discourse we seek to share with young people. Therefore, it becomes all the more pressing that we adults “double down” on our responsibility to teach our children the necessary importance of developing a respect for all persons…one of the Five Core Principles of a Lasallian School. While it is tempting to throw up our hands and conclude that the task is enormous and beyond our capabilities - that would be a mistake. Adults know – all too often through the School of Hard Knocks – that abandoning the enforcement of principles means abandoning our principles as well. La Salle exists, in part, to reinforce at school the values parents seek to instill in their children at home. Together, we can make a stand in favor of civil discourse, not only by establishing the principle, but also by reinforcing and enforcing it. Our young people grew up on easy access to Social Media. Let’s make sure they understand how to use it properly.

From the Parent Association
READY! SET! GO! Can you smell it in the air? Can you see it in the shorter days? Indian Summer is coming and fall is beginning. We are off to the start of the 2016-2017 school year with great gusto. We had a wonderful reception for our new principal, Courtney Kassakhian, on August 16. It was gratifying to see new parents as well as alumni come to welcome her into our La Salle Family. New Parent Orientation also went very well. I talked about our theme this year for the Parent Association “Facing the Future and Embracing New Beginnings.” For some of us, it is very hard to transition from our elementary school experience to high school. We have a hard time trying to figure out where we are going to fit in and where our efforts should land. This is why New Parent Orientation is so important. As the parents tour, it gives them a taste of many of the volunteer opportunities and activities here on campus. It also makes us acutely aware of what our students are going through in this transition. Many families come with deep roots and lots of branches here Parent Association at La Salle, but some of us are a lone leaf blowing in the wind. I encourage everyone, Meeting no matter what grade, to make new friends. There is always room for one more.
September 13, 2016 6:30pm Blakeslee Library
Back to school night will be Thursday, September 1 as well as the mandatory meeting for Senior Parents. As a “veteran” of the college process, trust me, take all of the help La Salle offers. You will make it through this and your students will be soaring to new places next year.
The new “Lancer Armory” will be open for your convenience before, during, and after Back-to-School night. We are fully stocked for the New Year. We are also open during the school week. Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch. The first home football game will be Friday, September 2 against Monrovia High School. Wear your La Salle gear and come out to cheer on our team. The first Parent Association Meeting will take place in the library Tuesday, September 13 at 6:30pm. Hospitality will start at 6:00pm. Our program for the evening is "Meet The Principal.” Following the meeting at 7:30pm will be the booster group’s breakout meetings. Do not forget; you get a service hour for attending. Lots of new beginnings and change, but remember it is said that sometimes the greatest advancements and most exciting developments stem from change.
Welcome to the journey!

City of Pasadena and La Salle Parking Laws The following rules and guidelines have been established by the administration and the Pasadena Police Department for the safety of your children. Parents may drop off students in front of the gym and school in the designated curb side "drop off" lane. They may also drive into the school parking lot on Sierra Madre Boulevard entering the parking lot using the second gate west of the gym and then exit as indicated. There is no parking in front of the Sierra Madre Boulevard school parking lot from 7:00am to 4:00pm on school days. There is a 2 hour parking area in front of the gym and school from 9:00am to 9:00pm.The City has provided an additional drop-off zone going south on Michillinda Avenue, just north of the School’s driveway. This is for immediate drop-off only and is indicated as such. Both La Salle and the City are very concerned by the ongoing double, (and at times, triple) parking by parents during drop-off on Sierra Madre Boulevard. This is not only illegal, but extremely unsafe. The City will continue to enforce a no-left-turn policy for northbound Michillinda Avenue traffic onto Canfield Road and Landfair Road, as well as a no-right-turn policy for southbound traffic on Michillinda Avenue onto Canfield and Landfair. This policy is in effect from 7:00am to 8:00am, Monday through Friday. Parents are also reminded that there is absolutely no student dropoff in the lower faculty parking lot. Pulling into this lot creates a very dangerous back-up of cars in the oncoming traffic lanes. The School also reminds our driving students that there is additional parking in the Sierra Madre United Methodist Church parking lot as they should not park their cars on residential streets such as Canfield Road. The School will continue to work with the City in providing a process for safe and efficient drop-off of students. Parents should make use of the Sierra Madre Boulevard lot to pick up students at the end of the school day. We expect our parents and students to adhere to these policies and regulations. They will be enforced by the Pasadena Police Department. Contact Mr. Brandon Birr, Dean of Students at 626.696.4360 if you have any concerns about these procedures.
DO NOT LEAVE CAR PARKED IN DROP OFF LANE
Attendance Hotline 626.696.4406
A parent or guardian must call before 8:00am the day of the absence to notify the School if a student will be absent or tardy, or if the student needs to leave school early for an appointment. Please state student's name, date, time, and reason for the absence. On return to School, the student must stop by the reception desk prior to 8:00am with a note from the parents or guardians stating the reason for the absence. Notification of any planned absences, (college visits, etc.), must be in writing prior to the absence, given to the attendance office and approved by Mr. Brandon Birr, Dean of Students.

EASY WAYS TO SUPPORT LA SALLE
SAVE THE DATES The thoughtful support of alumni, parents, grandparents and friends has helped sustain La Salle High School’s margin of excellence since 1956. The School acknowledges this generosity in a number of important ways. The premier annual giving society is the President’s Circle, established in 2011 which includes New Parent Giving Pledges and all cash deductible gifts of $2,500 or more per fiscal year (July 1 thru June30). The President’s Circle succeeds the Crystal Circle (New Parents Parent Giving Pledges and all cash deductible gifts between $1,000 and $2,499) as La Salle’s preeminent annual gift society. President’s Circle and Crystal Circle members are recognized on a donor wall in prominent display at the School and in the Annual Report. A reception will be held for each group in the fall:

As requested in the August Parent Newsletter, Senior students & parents should complete the College Planning Survey located on Naviance/Family Connection (both are due September 1). The Parent College Planning Survey helps the College Counselor learn about your student from another point of view and is helpful when we write your student’s recommendation. If you do not have or misplaced your login to Naviance/Family Connection, please contact your student’s College Counselor. Also note that the individual senior college meeting will be sched uled according to the receipt date of the student’s Senior College Planning Survey. In other words, first come, first served.
College Fairs The Jesuit College Fair will be held at La Salle on Thursday, September 15 from 6:00 to 8:00pm in the Dining Hall. This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in a mid-size university to meet admission representatives from all over the country. All La Salle students are also invited to attend the college fair held at Saint Francis High School on Thursday, September 29 from 7:00 to 8:30pm. It is one of the largest fairs in the San Gabriel Valley with over 70 colleges present and attracts close to 1000 students each year. Plan to arrive early and carpool as parking will be scarce.

Before the first week of school you can stop in on Mondays from 11:00am to 3:00pm to get ties, locks, and sweatshirts. We have close-out deals and some uniform items at discounted prices. PE outfits and large/extra large sweatshirts are available for purchase. Please contact Theresa Elmslie-Britt, Karen Gelinas, Jacky Samartin, or Robyn Tapert at lancerarmory@lasallehs.org if you have any questions.
