序言 Foreword | “To play without passion is inexcusable.” The Chinese character “樂” can be both defined as music and joyfulness. Music is not only an entertainment for individuals, but also as a means of sharing happiness. Musicians serve as pillars to connect music with the beings, to mingle their sensation with melodies and to delegate the pleasure of music to the masses. Markedly, the motive of La Sax is to enliven people the joy and passion of music-making. It is not difficult to establish an ensemble in Hong Kong. Yet, to sustain and develop the ensemble, it needs countless perseverance and collaboration from every member. Ten years ago, our passion for the saxophone encourages us to establish La Sax with a mission of promoting our music to a wider audience. Hereafter, we bear immense social responsibility to inspire and motivate people boundlessly via music. I indeed show my appreciation to all my companions for their tireless efforts, enthusiasm and devotion to La Sax over the years. Throughout the decade, we have witnessed La Sax’s evolution. And now, La Sax is proceeding to the next milestone. The 10th Anniversary Concert provided La Sax a great opportunity to make new attempts. Unlike the ordinary quartet, this is the first time for us to perform as an octet. We challenged to play pieces with complex structure and extensive ranges. Apart from that, it is our greatest honor to invite the legendary international saxophonist Nobuya Sugawa and well-known local conductor Kelvin Ngai to our concert, delegated to bring audiences the best music. I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to all the sponsors, cohorts and participated musicians in this concert. With limited resources, their great support profoundly facilitated La Sax to hold this concert successfully. Lastly, on behalf of La Sax, I would like to show my ultimate thankfulness to all our friends, supporters, organisations and staff crews for their keen assistances over these years. In the future, La Sax would continue propagating the enchantment of saxophone music to everyone!

The Planets: Jupiter

Jeffrey Chan arr.

The Planets is an orchestral suite consisting of seven movements. It was composed between 1914 and 1916 by the English composer Gustav Holst. Each movement is named after a planet and is a portrait of one particular aspect of the astrological character.

Jupiter, especially for its hearty theme shows how Holst was influenced by the traditional English folk dances. This movement is energetic and rich, bringing a rejoicing mood to the whole movement. The grand ballad section in the middle of the movement is hymn-like, leading to a more ceremonial type of joviality and giving the audience an authentic sense of traditional English folk culture.

Carmen Suite

Jeffrey Chan arr.

I. 鬥牛士進行曲 Les Toréadors II. Danse Boheme

10

Georges Bizet was a French composer dedicated to adding new elements to his music. He brought Spanish characteristics into his famous work Carmen even though he had never been to Spain before.

Carmen tells the story of a love triangle between José Don a soldier, Carmen a Spanish gypsy and Escamillo a bullfighter. José Don was seduced by Carmen and fell deeply in love with her. However, he loses Carmen to the more alluring Escamillo. Eventually José kills Carmen in a jealously fuelled rage.

Les Toréadors is derived from three themes: Prelude, Act I and Procession of the Toreadors from Act IV. The march serves as the entry of the bullfighters in the fourth act, followed by the Toreador Song from Act II, and the opening march reappears.

Habanera is originally an aria sung by Carmen, which represents the classic scene of her seduction towards José, tossing her red rose and incarnating her emotions to him.

Chanson du Toréador features the Toreador Song sung by Escamillo at the beginning of Act II. It showcases the dignity and pride of Escamillo, declaring his victory from the bullfight. The cheering of the crowd is described in this scene as well.

Danse Boheme is a gypsy dance, describing the scene of Carmen and other women entertaining the officers in Pastia's inn. The dance suite starts at a rather sedately pace, then gradually speeds up, getting wilder and wilder, accelerating to an energetic climax.

Programme Notes

Night on Bald Mountain

Wong Tak-Chiu arr.

Night on Bald Mountain is one of Modest Mussorgsky's most well-known pieces. The frantic and demonic musical thunderbolt has astonished audiences for over a century.

The work was based on a story occurring on St. John’s Eve, about an Old Russian legend of a witches’ sabbath. The piece projects an intensive and horrible sense. The work had not been performed in public at the time of the composer’s death in 1881; it was revised by his colleagues and later by other generations of composers and conductors. The piece garnered wider exposure when it was used as the theme music in the penultimate scene of the Walt Disney movie Fantasia (1940).

Yasuhide Ito (1960 -)

Yasuhide Ito graduated with a major in composition from Tokyo University of Arts. He is a current professor at Senzoku Gakuen Junior College and a part-time lecturer at Tokyo National University. Ito has earned international praise for his compositional endeavours. Amongst which, his most popular work for wind ensemble is Gloriosa (Gururiyoza). Ryukuan Fantasy was based on a traditional folk song Asadoya Yunta in Okinawa. The song pictured the Taketom Island during its empire era in a fascinating and playful way. The plot is about a beautiful lady called Asadoya Kuyama who was brave enough to reject the wedding proposal from a government man. Yunta is defined as a style that distinguishes Yaeyama islands’ folk songs and dances. The piece has been written in different version for wind bands, piano duets etc. The music arrangement for the performance tonight was written especially for saxophone quartet by Yasuhide.

Jazz Suite

Pedro Iturralde (1929 - )

I. 藍調 Blues IV.

Madrid Inspiration

Pedro Iturralde was born in Spain. He is a famous saxophonist with strong interest in music. He graduated from the Royal Conservatory in Madrid, studying the piano, vocals and clarinet. He always performed with his own composition, experimenting with jazz and flamenco influences. The Jazz Suites consists of five movements while three of them will be performed tonight. The three movements best demonstrate the assortment and distinctiveness of jazz music. In Blues, the tenor saxophone concertises an improvisation with vacillate and sway. The Waltz is a fast dance piece in a tempo of 3 / 4. Its swift rhythms fully evoke the light and easing elegancy of waltz. The Funky jazz music accentuates on its robust rhythmic motion apart form its melody and harmony. Iturralde ended the suite at full tilt with rapid tempo.

Masanori Kato (1972 - )

Born in Kanagawa, Japan, Masanori Katoh is one of Japan’s most promising composers. He has composed a wide variety of genres ranging from orchestral works to chamber music and choral forms. Although his compositional style is quite varied, Katoh prefers to compose works with beautiful lyricism, keeping distance from atonal contemporary styles.

Commissioned by Nobuya Sugawa, Madrid Inspiration was composed in 2005. It is originally a highly virtuosic work composed for the piano and saxophone, featuring many dramatic runs and challenging playing techniques for both instruments. Katoh has described it as a combination of the musical styles of Spanish composers Enrique Granados and Issac Albéniz, along with the influence of popular Latin American music. The version performed tonight is for solo saxophone and saxophone octet.

Oodles of Noodles

Jimmy Dorsey / Susumu Kusakabe arr.

Jimmy Dorsey was a saxophonist who flourished at the dawn of jazz, beginning in the 1920s. Known as a child prodigy and at the age of 7, he was already playing the slide trumpet and the cornet in his father’s brass band in Pennsylvania. In 1933, he and his brother formed the famed “Dorsey Brothers Orchestra”.

Dating from around the time that the “Dorsey Brothers Orchestra” was formed, this playful tune seems at home in dance hall or a crowded jazz cafe and is almost always a crowd favourite.
