When I awoke several weeks ago and flipped on the news to get the weather and traffic updates for the day I was stunned to see the images from Japan flooding my television screen with reports of the aftermath of the earthquake that hit with a staggering 9.0 magnitude. The loss of life, the destruction, and the pain and suffering on the faces that were everywhere in this story was staggering. Within days the international community began to respond with an influx of money and manpower trying to provide assistance to the people who suffered through the worst experience anyone can imagine. My wife and I made several contributions on line to various organization involved in the rescue effort, and I had to marvel at how quick even that vital part of the long term solution was up and running around the world within hours. I also wondered how much money would actually reach the people in Japan. When they began to put estimates on the damage in order to give viewers a sense of the size and scale of this catastrophe (insured damage pegged at $35 billion, total losses as high as $100 billion) it suddenly hit me that the $100 billion in damages was almost identical to the $105 billion in spending that was hidden in the Obama Health Care Bill. When Pelosi said let’s hurry up and pass it so we can find out what’s in it she wasn’t kidding. The Japanese disaster gave me a different way to measure just how large the spending problems are that we now face in America. In less that a week scientists in Europe concluded that Japan’s recent earthquake was cause by global warming. Here in the United States our scientists came to a different conclusion stating it was caused by fracturing natural gas in this country. I am sure before the story is over a United Nations Commission will determine with certainty that the real cause of the earthquake and tsunami was George W. Bush. Isn’t everything? In only a decade our society has managed to substitute the word trillion for the word billion. A billion in most peoples mind now has the impact that a million had a generation ago. What we have in our country is a crisis of semantics. I’m old enough to remember when hardly anyone knew the answer to, “What comes after a billion?” Your job and my job, and the job of every fiscally responsible person in our country is to force our elected officials at the federal, state, and local levels to balance their budgets and stop spending money we don’t have. The key to saving our country and the American Dream is really that simple.
