It was kind of sad back in May to watch our owners wrestle with the decision on whether to use their boats or not, should they go north, should they just leave the boat in Florida, etc. They were all pretty discouraged watching what was happening in their business and what was happening to their personal investments. I guess the last straw was watching the US Congress and realizing that the inmates had taken over the asylum and embarked on a spending spree unprecedented in the history of our country. The boats left on their summer schedule with no energy or enthusiasm in the story at all. Now, it’s July as I write this and the phone calls have been coming in for the past two weeks and I am happy to report our owners and their families are having a ball. The owners feel relaxed, refreshed, rejuvenated, and best of all, hopeful about their own lives and their own businesses which are the only things they can control. Many of our owners hoped they could cruise into retirement and never have to worry again about money, and now they find themselves working harder than they ever have in their lives. The good news is most admit their overheads had grown bloated over the past twenty years of prosperity and that their new business plan will be extremely profitable once the lights come back on in our economy. We talk about boating as if it was a non essential luxury when in fact, for those of us who are “water people”, it is nothing less than therapeutic. It’s our closest connection to God. Those precious hours and days on the water are the best money we can spend. What it does for our soul, our spirit, and our entire outlook on life is tough to put into words. Perhaps the thing I am enjoying the most in this financial hurricane, and what is giving me hope in my own business, is watching our owners reinventing themselves. They are all in high gear and organizing their troops and their resources for an energetic counterstrike. Not only will they be back running at full power soon, but they will be better than ever. I have always recognized that I have the good fortune to work for the best and brightest people in our country. They are the ones who create the jobs, built the roads and buildings, invent new technologies, and make this economy work. They pay the bulk of the taxes and they carry the bulk of the load. They and the generations of entrepreneurs before them are the ones who built our country and who keep it from going down the drain in spite of what our government does to hinder private enterprise. How proud we are at Hargrave to work for our owners. They are the only ones who can save our country.

Losing $1,000,000 or more when buying a yacht is a scary thought for anyone, and yet I see it happen frequently when a buyer get so fixated on “the deal” he completely forgets why he set out to buy a boat in the first place. Once he realizes he owns the wrong boat he then goes about selling it after a short period of ownership and when you add up the 10% commission, the carrying costs, and the depreciation, you quickly realize that changing yachts can be very expensive (not as expensive as changing spouses however!)

You know from your own business experience that hiring the wrong executive is not only extremely expensive but can actually damage your business. What usually happens in those scenarios is you were so impressed by their interview and by their appearance as well as their ability to project themselves that you lost complete sight of the fact that there were certain critical functions they would have to perform at a very high-level in order to succeed. Sometimes the collateral damage from a bad hiring decision is even worse if it demoralizes the rest of your organization. That same thing can happen when a boat buyer makes his selection based on emotions not on a set of clearly defined requirements. You start out looking for one type of boat and suddenly you own a totally different boat because it looked like a hot deal, or the interior décor just dazzled you. After you own the boat you begin to realize it was not the right boat for you for any number of reasons. It could be the beam of the boat is too wide to fit in the slip you own at Ocean Reef Club, or the draft is too much for the favorite anchoring spot at Allen’s Cay, or you are short one berth in the crew area for the type of service you were expecting. I have a form I use for evaluating a selection of yachts and it is surprising that the candidate with the strongest emotional appeal is frequently not the top choice when you run it through a filter of owner requirements. That’s why it is fun for us to build custom boats, each project fits the owner and his family like a tailored suit, and yet even they sit in their salon and say, “You know, on my next boat...” Maybe it’s just the nature of the beast. —Michael Joyce / CEO

That’s an interesting question because for the past thirty years most used boats have been priced using one of two industry standard formulas. The first formula, which was also the least scientific, is called COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS. Using this formula the owner of the boat would look in the back of several yachting magazines, see some other boats for sale in his size range, and regardless of the difference in years, engines, or equipment, he would pronounce, “If that boat is worth $6.0 million then mine is worth $8.0 million.” The other dominant formula used in the past by owners in setting the listing price of their yacht is called THE GROSS INVESTMENT THEORY. Using this formula the owner would ask his CPA for “the boat file” and then proceed to add up everything in the file – purchase price, repairs, general maintenance, crew wages, food, beverages, dockage, insurance, airline tickets for family and friends, plus another $25,000 for receipts he can’t find but knows he has somewhere, and that would be his bottom dollar. Interestingly, there is now a pricing formula that’s never been used before in my career, and it’s called MARKET PRICING and this formula is controlled by the buyer who says “It’s worth $5.0 million to me to buy a beautiful 100’ yacht, does anybody out there want $5.0 million in cash today?” You know there are people out there who actually want the cash, and are letting their boats go at offered prices. One seller said, “I’ve owned my boat for seven years and haven’t put a dime into, and I do have 4,000 hours on the engines, and it is due for a full paint job so it’s probably not worth what I paid for it when it was brand new.” In tough times buyers are a lot more careful about what they buy. Brands mean something, reputation for quality means something, and word of mouth from satisfied owners means a lot in today’s economy. Find out why Hargrave still enjoys the best resale history in our size range. By not overpaying on the front end our Hargrave owners found it was a lot easier to strike a deal with the second owner. Don’t make a million dollar mistake, whether you are looking at a new boat or a used boat, check out Hargrave and see why even during this astounding recession people were still buying Hargraves. —Michael Joyce / CEO

That was the name of an 83' boat that Tom Fexas designed for Doug & Joan Kerr of Ft. Pierce back in 1984 and it was the start of one of the most unusual relationships in my life. Joan and Doug were a matched pair of fun loving, high energy people who generously shared their life with friends and family. You knew the minute you heard their name what ever it was that was going down, it would be fun. I have memories of our maiden voyage to the Bahamas on THE LADY MORRISON VII that are still as vivid today as when they happened two decades ago. When you see the Bahamas through the eyes of a couple who are madly in love with the Bahamas you truly appreciate what makes the islands so special. Waking up every morning at 6 am to the sound of bagpipes blaring through the boat, or being on the bridge for the morning salute - opening a can of Miller beer to start the day (they were the Miller beer distributor) were hysterical moments in time. I was drunk by breakfast and had to go to bed. This trip of a lifetime came after Doug & Joan had already flown Jan and me, Tom Fexas, and the decorator Barbara Voigt and her husband Charlie to Hong Kong at their expense so we could share the grand moment with them. After they retired from boating they decided to share Doug’s childhood memories from Montana with my wife and me and again, flew us at their expense all over Montana and Alberta. Doug’s father was the President of the Great Northern Railroad and Doug spent every summer out west visiting Banff Springs, Jasper Park, Lake Louise, Whitefish, and Bozeman with each stop filled with stories and recollections told by Doug & Joan. Doug died several years ago and Joan soldiered on as best she could. Her children rallied around to give her much needed support and finally she gave up her home and moved to an assisted living facility near her son. Two weeks ago I received a lovely letter from Joan Kerr (written by her son) and it was filled with energy, optimism, and enthusiasm. She wanted to know all about me and what I was doing, just like she always did when we talked. Joan was always about you and never about her. Doug and Joan named all their boats THE LADY MORRISON after Joan’s mother and they had everything from a Sunfish to a 64' Hatteras and ended with an 83' Fexas/Cheoy Lee. Every boat photo on their wall triggered stories about their adventures with their children, family, and friends over a lifetime. They treated me like family, and the stories, jokes, and events that took place in my time with them would fill two books. The call came just a week after I received my beautiful letter that is sitting in front of me that Joan Kerr had passed away and went to be with Doug in heaven. Doug was a master prankster in every sense of the word and all I kept thinking was “what did he do when Joan arrived?” They were that kind of couple. Michael Joyce / CEO
