The Art of Hergé, Inventor of Tintin Volume 2: 1937-1949 The second in a three-volume series, this is a selection of Hergé’s outstanding and often unpublished drawings, showing the diversity of his work and offering the reader a view of the range of his talent. Georges Remi, better known as Hergé, the creator of Tintin & Snowy, was born a century ago. He left an exceptional legacy, the center of which was Tintin, but also included much other work. This second volume of The Art of Hergé covers the years 1937 to 1945. The period illustrated is fascinating on a number of counts, marking the maturity of Hergé, the creator and artist. In 1937 Hergé was only 30, but he had already laid down enough markers to lay claim to his future territory – the strip cartoon. It was during this period that he began to render the Adventures of Tintin in color. The period covered in this volume was also marked by global political tensions and mounting dangers that boiled over into the Second World War. From his childhood onward, Hergé produced a vast number of drawings. The Art of Hergé, Inventor of Tintin presents them all in chronological order, with many high quality reproductions, each accompanied by concise commentary allowing us a closer look into Hergé’s daily routine, and by extension, his thoughts.

Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms Hardcover Collector’s Edition This critically praised manga is now presented in a hardcover format, perfect for libraries and collectors. What impact did World War II and the dropping of the atomic bomb have on the common people of Japan? Through the eyes of an average woman living in 1955, Japanese artist Fumiyo Kouno answers these questions. Kouno’s light, free style of drawing evokes a tender reflection of this difficult period in Hiroshima’s postwar past. As the characters continue with everyday life, the shadow of the war and the atomic bombing linger ghostlike in the background. Kouno’s beautiful storytelling touches the reader’s heart but is never overly sentimental. A widely embraced best-seller in Japan (180,000 copies), Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms has won several prestigious awards and much acclaim.

Little Fluffy Gigolo PELU

Onikage: Saeki Toshio

Junko Mizuno

The comic tale of a cute extraterrestrial creature that comes to Earth determined to find himself true happiness in the form of a human bride. Our hero’s search takes him from the surface of his fantastic alien planet to an off-kilter modern Japan where Pelu meets aspiring singers, sassy girls, paint-sniffing bad boys, and the body-switching students of a mysterious high school. Artist Junko Mizuno unleashes her unique graphic storytelling sensibilities on a tale that’s frequently adorable, sometimes grotesque, and surprisingly moving.

A selection of Toshio Saeki’s previously unseen works, uniquely printed in large, lush format. Throughout, paper vellum overlays reproduce Saeki’s unique method for adding color to his black and white artwork. He does not apply color directly, but instead uses overlays to indicate the exact colors he wants. He calls this method chinto printing — the picture is complete only after it has been printed — a modern version of the ukiyo-e, a genre of Japanese woodcut prints. Though Onikage contains nearly two-dozen full-color and seven black and white images, the viewer is not allowed to see every image in all stages. Like the artist, the viewer must use his or her imagination to complete these peculiar pictures.

The Band Crime: Punk77 Revisited

—Dr. Timothy Leary

James Stark

The Band Crime, Punk 77 Revisited is James Stark’s second book of punk photography. The Band Crime is a continuation of Punk 77, focusing on one of the important early punk rock bands: Crime. Before punk, there were two bands in San Francisco who were laying the ground work for the punk look and attitude — Crime and The Nuns. The Band Crime features over one hundred photographs with text to set the scene. Crime was a visual band who took care to make sure their look was right. It was not unusual for Crime to have a different look for each show. When the author first met them, they were into South of Market gay bar drag — poppers, shiny-wife beater T-shirts, black leather jackets, and leather motorcycle caps.

Inamorata: The Erotic Art of Michael Manning This lavish softcover art collection contains a decade’s worth of illustrator Michael Manning’s perversely beautiful portraits. Dominatrixes, dancers, fetish models, contortionists, and other real-life muses are reinterpreted through the artist’s elegant line work as powerful and profoundly sensual beings who give free reign to their erotic desires.

Hi-Fructose Collected Edition

Aye Jay The eye-opening story of the life of an average Arab-American struggling with his identity in an increasingly hostile nation. Using the graphic novel as his medium, Lebanon-born Toufic El Rassi chronicles his experience growing up Arab in America. Keen observations, clever insights and painful honesty make El Rassi’s work shine as a critical 21st century memoir. From childhood through adolescence, and as an adult, El Rassi illustrates the prejudice and discrimination Arabs and Muslims experience in American society: ignorant teachers, racist neighbors, bullying classmates, and a growing sense of alienation.

The title says it all! Break out the crayons, ‘cause it’s gangsta rap coloring time! 48 pages of line drawings of “Gangsta” rappers, done with the thick black line we all remember from the coloring books of our youth. The juxtaposition of the outlaw image of the rappers with the childlike innocence of a coloring book makes for an instant laugh.

My mom took me to the year-end student exhibition at Columbus College of Art and Design when I was about 15 and by the time I left the building I knew I was going to go to school there and be an artist. My decision never wavered from then on... Although often associated with modern Pop Surrealists, Scott Musgrove is actually more at home with historical artists such as Hudson River School painters Frederic Church, Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran, as well as naturalist artists like John James Audubon. While primarily a painter, Musgrove maintains hope for his breakout moment when he befriends

What was the last thing you saw in daily life that inspired you? Went to a motorcycle party yesterday and there were umpteen works of Rolling American Works Of Mechanical Folk Art, gleaming in the sun, in various states of completeness and/or decay.

Transportation as Art, Form Follows Function, Machine as Statement Of Personal Ideology, etc. Most people wouldn’t really get it until they saw something about it on TV or maybe a coffee-table book. They need a narrator to explain stuff, the feed doesn’t get past the filters... The Pizz has assaulted the world with his distinctive lowbrow paintings for years. An early protege of Ed “Big Daddy” Roth,

If you were not an artist, what would you be doing?

My wife Gretchen and I just spent a few days in a cabin in the woods in the Cascades and pretty much everything inspires me there. From the vistas and beautiful waterfalls down to the moss and fungus growing on fallen trees. The banana slugs are interesting and will make your tongue go numb if you lick them.

I’d be likely doing Time in the Big House... Maybe writing more comix for low pay...

How often do you use studies or sketches from real life and models, vs. how often do you work directly from your imagination?

worked with the high and low of lowbrow in the art field, television

Used to make use of live models a lot in my early work, as a flimsy excuse to lure women over into my lair and get them to disrobe. It worked very well. Nowadays I might use a car model or a real gun if I need some authentic real-life detail, but 9/10ths of anything is just pure “Id” put down on paper as fast as possible. No computer-assist, no copying somebody else’s work, no looking at the Internet or books... just pure velocity to keep the flow going.

(Red Hot Chili Peppers).

I have a feeling I’d be doing something similar, but I would be drawing these things from real life instead of having to speculate about what they’d look like. I’d probably have to capture some of them so they’d slow down enough that I could draw them. So, I’m happy about not having to do that. I’ve been bitten and clawed enough already in the 21st century.

What type of art do you think you’d be making if you were making art 100 years from now? Sadly, I think I’d be painting all the animals that are alive today but will be extinct by then...

DAVE THE CHIMP: PART OF REBELLION #2

the DEPRAVITIES OF WAR

Christian Hundertmark

Sandow Birk

London artist Dave the Chimp was one of the first street artists who went outside to paint with brushes and acrylic paint. Extremely prolific in streets, galleries, and skateboard designs, his bold black lines are humorous, often with lighthearted social commentary, and he has been called a “positive” graffiti artist trying to bring beauty to his run-down neighborhood. Color.

Sandow Birk’s monumental print project, inspired by Jacques Callot’s 1633 series of etchings, The Miseries and Disasters of War. Birk’s project consists of 15 large- scale woodcut prints that follow the course of the Iraq war. This landscape book reproduces this project, plus selected paintings and commentaries. ALIANZA: EL MAC/RETNA

BARRON STOREY’S WATCH ANNUAL: 1996

DESIGN AS ART

El Mac, Retna

Barron Storey, editor

Bruno Munari

El Mac and Retna have risen to worldwide prominence with their graffiti, murals and canvases. Each has developed a distinctive style and technique; Retna is renowned for his bold calligraphic brushwork, Mac for his uniquely stylized painting of lifelike faces and figures. This superb book is the first to fully present their collaborative murals. Hardcover, color.

Barron Storey has long been recognized as one of America’s finest illustrators. But it is his personal alternative work and that of his friends and students that highlighted his 1980s underground arts magazine, W-A-T-C-H. This collection revives that title as an annual book. Dave McKean, George Pratt, Bill Koeb, and Barron Storey. Intro by Neil Gaiman. B&w.

Bruno Munari was among the most inspirational designers of all time, described by Picasso as “the new Leonardo.” Munari insisted that design be beautiful, functional and accessible, and this enlightening, entertaining book sets out his ideas about visual, graphic and industrial design and the role it plays in the objects we use everyday. Pocket sized, a decent amount of art (b&w).

TRAVIS LOUIE’S CURIOSITIES Travis Louie

Pointers from a master storyteller. Legendary Batman and X-Men artist Neal Adams said, “If you’re interested in getting to the thought process that has gone into the work that I have done, this could be just the sketchbook that does it for you. Here, if you like, you can climb down into my mind. Just watch the first step, it’s a doosey.” Full commentary by Adam. B&w.

Travis Louie has created his own imaginary world grounded in Victorian and Edwardian times. It is inhabited by human oddities, mythical beings, and otherworldly characters who appear to have had their formal portraits taken to mark their existence and place in society. A man is cursed by a goat, a strange furry being is discovered sleeping in a hedge. Color.

B&w. “A perfect little book.” Daniel Clowes. “Tom Gauld turns futility, decay and eternity into sheer comic wonder. His black humor makes Beckett look timid.” -Glen David Gold, Carter Beats the Devil.

The second big omnibus collection of Jaime Hernandez’s ongoing tales of the “Locas.” This volume picks up shortly after Maggie and Hopey’s long-awaited reunion at the end of the first Locas. Maggie, Hopey, and Ray’s paths continue to intersect in Hernandez’s increasingly complex, intricate, and always vitally realized world. Big, b&w.

The second, eye-popping volume of the Hernandez Brothers’ “New Stories” starts with “Hypnotwist,” Gilbert’s wordless epic about a leggy redhead’s surreal journey into a night of mysterious shady characters, dreamlike violence, and sparkling retro spike heels. Tolkien’s The Hobbit has become one of the best-loved books of all time. It was adapted into a fully painted graphic novel, which became a classic in its own right. Full- color graphic novel.

Jason returns with his most eagerly awaited book yet. PRAYER REQUESTED

PRINCE VALIANT VOL. 1: 1937-1938

Fred Chao

Diane Obomsawin

Christian Northeast

Hal Foster

Indy favorite Fred Chao’s Eisner-nominated, adventure / sci-fi / love story Johnny Hiro, collected for the first time! Johnny Hiro tells the story of an everyman and the challenges he faces — like the revenge of a big lizard, the quest for a lobster, or what can happen when 47 ronin go to the opera. Collects issues 1-3, and adds two additional issues!

On May 28, 1828, began the official life of Kaspar Hauser, who appeared mysteriously in the streets of Nuremberg, allegedly raised in a cellar and deprived of human contact until 16. This graphic novel tells his strange story. Minimalist grayscale panels and simple line work register the wonder and bewilderment of a trusting soul emerging into a fickle society.

Succinctly stated and punctuated with a sharpedged visual style, Prayer Requested presents a narrative of illustrations and collages... each accompanied by a found or scavenged prayer from the Internet. Equal parts inspiring, amusing, enlightening, and in some cases entirely peculiar. Midway between a comic collection and an art book. Color.

Universally acclaimed as the most gorgeous adventure comic strip ever, Prince Valiant ran for 35 years under the pen of creator Hal Foster. Thanks to advances in production technology and newly available original proof sheets, this definitive series is the first to feature superb restored artwork, capturing every delicate line and chromatic nuance. Color.

Set in sun-drenched Cape Town, RMDHB is stuffed with mystery, suspense, action, adventure, conspiracy theories, cool cars, and excellent weed as well-meaning stoners Dave and Paul thwart criminal malfeasance and ponder the larger questions. Unnervingly deranged plots are written with a dry, deadpan wit anchored in everyday reality. Color.

80pgs, $9.95 978-1-60309-037-7

How do you measure the distance between satisfaction and settling? When does wishful thinking take a life of its own? Clean, emotional ink-work guides two characters through a brief encounter that transforms their lives. “Hits just the right notes of longing, passion and tender reflection about those other lives and other loves that might have been.” -Paul Gravett

Fat Freddy’s Cat began life as a footnote strip to the Freak Brothers and later appeared in many comics of his own. He is often to be found sleeping on the unfortunate Fat Freddy’s head. His constant battles with the never ending army of roaches out for world domination drive him to distraction, as does Fat Freddy’s never-ending failure to feed him or empty his kitty litter box. As a result of this, his main hobbies seem to be shredding Fat Freddy’s water bed and any other items he can sink his claws into, and finding places to leave surprise poop packages for Freddy to discover. This cat has variously gone travelling to Mexico, saved the world from alien invasion, and worked as a government agent in Washington trying to save the world from the “hee hee hee” drug. He has 3 nephews of unknown origin. He tends to regard the Freak Brothers with a fair bit of contempt, but despite the odd separation he always seems to hook back up with his inept roomies.

the STORY OF CRASS

Chuck Palahniuk

George Berger

The Manchurian Candidate meets South Park. Pygmy is one of a handful of young adults from a totalitarian state sent to the US, disguised as exchange students, to plan an act of massive terrorism. Chuck Palahniuk depicts Midwestern life through the eyes of a thoroughly indoctrinated little killer who hates us with a passion. It’s a comedy, and a romance.

Crass was the anarcho-punk face of a revolutionary movement. Not just another iconoclastic band, Crass was a musical, social and political phenomenon: putting out their own records, films and magazines and setting up situationist pranks that were dutifully covered by the press. They have at last collaborated on telling the whole story. A few pages of photos and art (b&w).

BILL WARD’S TORCHY VOL. 1

MAURICIO TATTOO 2: ORIGINAL FLASH

Bill Ward

Theodora Da Silva Mauricio

Highly skilled artists, many tattooists have moved beyond the artwork they draw on skin to create personal work on canvas. This is the first book to showcase this art. Features 26 international artists who use a variety of mediums: ink, watercolor, acrylic paint, oil, lino printing, painting on wood and board, even tattoo-style street art and skateboard graphics. Color.

In 1944, Bill Ward’s curvaceous creation, Torchy Todd, shared the pages of army newspapers with Milton Caniff’s equally curvy Miss Lace. Both pin-uppy strips were intended to help boost G.I. morale, and we can assume that they did just that since we won the war. Herein lies most of her best mad-cap adventures. You’re in for a wild ride. Softcover, b&w.

The second collection of original fantasies by Mauricio Teodoro Da Silva, the amazingly talented Brazilian artist and tattooist. 180 brand new flashes on 48 pages: dragons, epic warriors and other fantasy characters, female warriors, queens and fantasy heroines, fairies and elves, classic Japanese tattoo figures, tribal designs, more. Saddle-stiched, b&w.

ABC3D

D’AULAIRES’ BOOK OF GREEK MYTHS

Marion Bataille

Ingri d’Aulaire, Edgar Parin d’Aulaire

Prepare to be amazed. ABC3D is as much a work of art as it is a pop- up book. The three- dimensional letters move and change before your eyes. C turns into D with a snap. M stands at attention. And there’s U... Hardcover, two-color (black and red). “Easily the most innovative alphabet book of the year, if not the decade.” -Washington Post. “An absolute delight.” -Kirkus.

Here are the gods, goddesses, and legendary figures of ancient Greece -- mighty Zeus, with his fistful of thunderbolts; gray-eyed Athena, goddess of wisdom; greedy King Midas -- lavishly depicted by Caldecott winners Ingri and Edgar Parin d’Aulaire. These splendid artists bring to life the myths that inspired great literature and art through the ages.
