elcome to our Spring 2011 Publishing Catalog, featuring all-new titles and our critically-
acclaimed backlist. For 40 years, Last Gasp has produced and distributed the art, writing, and photography of the underground. New this spring: award-winning and hilarious superhero line work by internationallysyndicated cartoonist Dan “Bizarro” Piraro; a dark reinterpretation of Pinocchio by Winschluss; and the sparkling journalistic eye of Michael Farr, who explains The Adventures of Tintin with nothing less than a mastery of facts and a scholar’s insight. We also collect the whimsical art of Gary Arlington, who had the first comic book store in America, which became the meeting place for Robert Crumb, Greg Irons, Spain, S. Clay Wilson, and many more underground comix legends. Read the tried-and-true original writing of Aaron Cometbus in Add Toner, then ponder your next misdemeanor with a collection of fresh, stickable art from the master of “popaganda,” Ron English. Celebrate the beauty of Femalia, and blast your eyeballs with a blend of pop art and psychedelia in Pop Psychedelic. And if the daily grind is wearing you down, grab copies of Nothing is Golden and A Cynic’s Guide to a Rich and Full Life, and laugh ‘til it hurts.

The classic tale reimagined as comic noir
Pinocchio Winshluss This award-winning graphic novel re-imagines Pinocchio as a noir fairy tale both comic and tragic.
Exquisite drawings by celebrated cartoonist Winshluss bring to life a rich tale of greedy fools, lust, sadness, redemption, and hope. In this dark rendition, a greedy Geppetto builds Pinocchio as a metallic weapon of war, while Jiminy Cockroach is a homeless squatter living the good life in Pinocchio’s skull. Teamed with brilliant colorist Cizo, Winshluss creates an epic adventure through a lush world. Meet seven sleazy dwarves, follow Jiminy’s struggles as a novelist, watch a blind tramp find God, and see the innocent, yet powerful Pinocchio encircled by those who would use him for their own ends. Each page is perfectly composed—not a panel is wasted. Primarily rendered in pen & ink and watercolor, the artwork switches to paint for larger splash panels, referencing a range of illustrative styles.
Critically acclaimed, Pinocchio won the Grand Prize at France’s Angoulême comics festival in 2009. PINOCCHIO • Ships May 1st, 2011 • 978-0-86719-751-8 • • • • • •

Winshluss is the creator of numerous comics and graphic novels that have garnered awards and acclaim across Europe. Winshluss is the pen name of Vincent Parronnaud, born in 1970 and perhaps best known as co-director of the animated film Persepolis (with Marjane Satrapi), which won the Jury Prize at Cannes and was nominated for numerous awards, including the Academy Award, Golden Globe and Cannes’ Palm d’Or. Currently, Winshluss and Satrapi are teaming up again to adapt Satrapi’s 2006 book “Chicken with Plums.”

Bizarro Heroes Dan Piraro A collection of superhero-themed comics from the award-winning newspaper cartoon, Bizarro.
Cartoonist Dan Piraro skewers these masked and caped crime fighters like no other, poking fun at their super powers, superlatives, and their tights. Piraro’s elaborate renderings often reveal the true identities of these heroes: Superman lounging on the couch at home, the Hulk in his psychotherapist’s office, Wolverine at the nail salon, and many more. Bizarro Heroes collects these smart, funny send-ups of all your favorite comic heroes in one incredible, amazing, fantastic volume.

In 2007, Dan Piraro reached the selfproclaimed pinnacle of his career thus far when he and Bizarro appeared as a clue on the popular American television trivia show, Jeopardy. Bizarro was first syndicated in 1985 and has built a steady following in the United States and Canada, as well as parts of Europe, Asia and South America. Bizarro has won an unprecedented three consecutive “Best Cartoon Panel of the Year” awards from the National Cartoonists Society. In 2010, Dan Piraro was given their highest award, the Reuben, for “Outstanding Cartoonist of the Year.”

The ultimate companion to the Adventures of Tintin
Tintin: The Complete Companion Michael Farr
A fully-illustrated guide to the world-famous comic character Tintin and his fascinating adventures.
Well-researched and gorgeously presented, this overview follows Tintin through the 23 titles of the complete series. Written and drawn between 1929 and 1976, the adventures of Tintin, his dog Snowy and an unforgettable cast of characters has become a defining standard of graphic literature. The Complete Companion places Hergé’s accomplishment in an historical context. His drawings are presented side by side with their references, demonstrating how he established believable backgrounds and realistic details. The book includes a large number of sketches, which Hergé re-worked and polished until he found the clearest, most easily readable line—giving birth to a style that would later be called Clear Line.
The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson are teaming up to release a 3-D motion capture film based on The Adventures of Tintin later this year. The film, directed by Spielberg and produced by Jackson, is based on three Tintin stories: The Crab with the Golden Claws, The Secret of the Unicorn, and Red Rackham’s Treasure. Ron English’s Stickable Art Offenses Ron English, Randy Johnson
Who wants an art book that just sits on the living room coffee table looking pretty?
What better way to enhance a trip to your local supermarket or convenience store than re-labeling their products to be more truthful? Ron English’s Stickable Art Offenses is a book of stickers—mini-billboards, “subvertisements” and other visual enhancements— from one of the most prolific and recognizable artists today. English coined the term POPaganda to describe his signature mash-up of high & low cultural touchstones, populated with his vast and constantly growing arsenal of original characters, including MC

It was a Thursday night in Manhattan. I was feeling pretty respectable when I turned the corner onto 14th street. I had suited up and gone to dinner with my businessman friend Lenny at an upscale uptown restaurant. We had consumed a nice bottle of wine and were in fine spirits. I wanted to take Lenny to Barmacy, one of my favorite downtown bars, to let him experience a little life on my side of 14th street. I also wanted to show off a couple of my recent billboard liberations. A few doors down from and six feet above the bar were my latest creations, Think Different with Charles Manson, and on the billboard on the opposite side of the building was a giant vagina pasted over a Nissan Minivan Ad, courtesy of the Billboard Liberation Front. The caption on the billboard had originally read “Don’t Have Kids Without One.” I had changed “Kids” to “Sex.”
As Lenny gazed up at Charles Manson, I slapped a sticker on
a friend’s door as a sort of howdy. I would have rung his bell, but I knew he turned in early and didn’t drink. We continued on to the bar, where Deb, the owner was sitting outside, checking IDs. She smiled and waved as we approached. As we closed in on our destination, I realized I was being flanked by six guys and a woman. Although I didn’t recognize them, I

figured we must have been on pretty friendly terms at one time, because they were being pretty aggressive with their affections. After they had me on the ground in handcuffs, it occurred to me why I hadn’t recognized them. They were undercover officers.
As I watched one of the male officers rifle through my bag, I
inquired to another about the reason for my arrest. He replied, “We saw you put up that sticker”. The other cop removed three more stickers from my bag and announced, “He’s in possession of three more!” I said, rather relieved, “Well, take off these cuffs, give me my ticket and let me go have

a drink with my friend.” But that wasn’t the way it was going down. They informed me I was going to the police station. So I’m figuring this is some sort of desk ticket. Station is what, seven blocks away. So maybe I’m out of commission for one or two hours. I told Lenny to wait for me at the bar. I’d be back in a round or two...

A Cynic’s Guide to a Rich and Full Life Expanded Edition Mario Digiorgio Tongue-in-cheek advice on how to be more self-centered, cynical, and hilariously inappropriate.
People say that what you give is what you get. That you need to slow down and soak in life. People will also tell you that the essence of joy is found within the appreciation of the little things. Simply put, those people are idiots. Planting a garden will leave you with sore knees and throbbing blisters. Taking the scenic route will make you tardy. Furthermore, you cannot pay your mortgage with the laughter of children. Anyone can hold a door open for a stranger. However, it takes a rare and special breed to trip them in the process. Here is a black cloud of unconventional wisdom to quell those dark urges, a collection of joyfully inappropriate wishful thinking. Plant your tongue firmly in cheek and prepare to learn the secrets of living a truly rich and full life.

Mario DiGiorgio resides in Austin, Texas and tours the country with an ever-swelling catalogue of smart, inventive material that spills over with left turns, right hooks and sucker-punches. He has been a finalist in the HBO/Aspen Open Call for stand-up; a finalist in Comedy Central’s Laugh Riots competition; a Top-8 finalist in the Boston Comedy Festival contest for stand-ups; a regular guest on the Bob and Tom show; and was featured on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend.
“as dry as a martini at the Tanqueray distillery, as caustic as a Drano milkshake, as funny as a banana peel on the floor of the Republican Convention.” —The Austin Chronicle Q&A with Mario DiGiorgio This book is, at times, wildly inappropriate. Explain yourself, young man. (Heavy sigh) Sometimes it’s not “funny ‘cos it’s true,” but rather, “funny ‘cos it’s wrong,” If you’re laughing at things you believe to be wrong, then I think that shows how easily and quickly you recognize what “wrong” is, and you mock it. It’s low-brow for the high-brow.
What do you have against kids? What’s that expression? Kids should be seen, not heard? I say, why not go two-for-two? Kids are annoying. “Not my kids”. Especially your kids. Why don’t you ask a priest what he has against kids. I guarantee it’s something more... tangible.
I’m offended by your blatant lack of religious reverence, and some of your remarks, are—God forgive me— downright shitty. It is my belief that getting “offended” is merely insecurity with a fake nose and mustache. Please don’t give me a guilt trip based on those insecurities. Perhaps if you were more secure with your beliefs,
“Mario DiGiorgio turns hip on its head with his stiletto-sharp wit.”
my shitty remarks might roll off your back with minimal skid marks. And I forgive you, my child.

Visionary synthesis of psychedelic culture and pop art
Pop Psychedelic BigBros Workshop
A comprehensive graphic design collection exploding with a blend of psychedelic and pop imagery.
This convergence of styles is flourishing today in the art and design world. Through art and images, Pop Psychedelic examines the current synthesis of ‘60s and ‘70s psychedelia and ‘80s pop art. The lasting influence of these forms continues in fashion, music, spirituality, and even revolutionary movements. Pop Psychedelic considers the history of these two art forms and their unique contributions to the world—ideologically, aesthetically, and culturally—then looks at their evolution to the psychedelic pop phenomenon in illustration and graphic arts. Artists relate their personal beliefs, discuss the form and its potential to create meaning, and to look at the underlying messages in the work.
