ILLINOIS WINE


Illinois is found in the Midwestern United States, it is the 5th populous state in the United States of America and it is also known as the 25th largest in terms land mass. Natural resources available in the state of Illinois include: coal, timber, and petroleum respectively; these resources are found mostly in the southern region of Illinois.


The Illinois wine industry has experienced a rapid growth with over 100 wineries today. Illinois wine is one wine that is made from grapes grown in the united states of Illinois. It is understood that, grapes have been grown in Illinois for more than 45 years.



According to records, the oldest vineyard was planted in the year 1851 and is said to be located at Nauvoo state park. There are lots of family owned vineyards in Illinois and the oldest surviving family owned vineyards is also located at Nauvoo.


Illinois may not be among the first states that have started wine production in the United States of America, but it has a long history in wine and grape production, and it is considered as the fourth largest producer of grapes and wines in present times.


Illinois has enjoyed good reputations for its quality wines production and consistence wine service delivery world-wide. It is important to know that most of Illinois grapes are found on the hills of southern Illinois – specifically in the slopping areas.



In the year 2004, Research shows that the 90% of grape area harvested in Illinois was attributed to the emergence of 12 grape varieties in that region. At that period, the favorite varieties mostly produced in that area include the following:


• chardonel, • Tramaminette, • Foch, • Norton, • Seyval


• Vignoles • Vidal • Blan • Frontact • Niagra, and • Cayuga white.



It is important to know that many of these varieties are hybrids in nature. These hybrids are found in northern and central Illinois and are known to be adapted to the cold climate of that region.


Categories of wine in Illinois The department of agriculture, affiliated to the Illinois state affair have identified and recognized 10 different categories of Illinois wine. They are: • The fruit wine • The dessert wine • The hybrid red wine


• The generic blended wine • The Native American red wine • The Native American white wine • The vinifera red wine • The sparkling wine • The vinifera white wine



One thing you need to know is that most of the region of Illinois also makes fruits wine from apples, berries, and other related fruits. There are a lot number of wineries (places where wines are made and kept) in the Illinois in which many high class wines are produced.
