LADY TECHSTER
SOCCER COMPLEX The Lady Techster Soccer Complex begins its seventh season of existence in 2015 as the home field for the Louisiana Tech soccer team. Located on Alabama Ave., the Lady Techster Soccer Complex features a press box, permanent bleachers, sound system, scoreboard and mounted stadium lights. Starting in late February of 2013, preparation for the installment of lights at the complex began with power lines being put in place under the soccer field to connect to the main power source. Foundations were then started in early March with the concrete needing to sit for at least 30 days. The light poles were delivered and the main frames were connected before the 1500 watt bulbs were attached and angled properly. The four poles were mounted onto the foundations and connected to the power source. Most recently, the field itself received an upgrade with a new drainage system and constructed façade retaining wall, as well as a new sprinkler system. In six seasons, the Lady Techsters have posted a tremendous 38-13-3 record at their friendly confines, including a 9-1 mark this past season which tied the program record for the most home wins in a single season. The facility has seen several historical moments in Louisiana Tech soccer, starting with the 2009 home opener as LA Tech defeated Lamar 3-2 in double overtime for its first win at the complex. On Oct. 23, 2009, Kiva Gresham’s extra-frame gave LA Tech a 2-1 win over New Mexico State for their first-ever conference win. On Oct. 15, 2010 against 2009 WAC champion San Jose State, Lady Techsters came back from a twogoal halftime deficit to win 5-4 in overtime. The fourth notable match came on Oct. 5, 2012 when LA Tech stunned nationally-ranked Denver in a 1-1 tie. The fifth moment came this past season in the regular season finale when Brittany Beddow scored the golden goal to beat Florida Atlantic, 1-0, and clinch the team’s first ever appearance in the Conference USA Tournament. The complex also played host to the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Lady Techsters’ previous home was Joe Aillet Stadium, home to the Bulldog football team, where they posted an 11-12-4 record over the program’s previous four years (2005-08). The facility will forever be remembered as the place where the soccer program earned its inaugural victory, a 2-0 shutout of Mississippi Valley State on Aug. 28, 2005. LA Tech’s Katy Garrison scored the first goal in the stadium on an assist by Sarah Chovanec. During the program’s inaugural season in 2004, the team played all of their home games on the intramural soccer field across from the Lambright Intramural Center.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW ANOTHER COMEBACK VICTORY FOR LA TECH (Aug. 31) Louisiana Tech is already starting to build the reputation of comeback kids. The team was down a goal at halftime but then exploded for three second half scores to defeat Eastern Illinois, 3-1, at Lakeside Field. It marked the third comeback for LATech in just five matches this season and wrapped up a great effort at the EIUTournament, one which also saw them best Lewis University, 6-0.
TECHSTERS SHUTOUT RAGIN’ CAJUNS (Sept. 12) The speed of Louisiana Tech proved too much for Louisiana-Lafayette to handle as the Lady Techsters shutout the in-state foe, 2-0, at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex. Playing through a misty rain through much of the match, LA Tech managed to remain unbeaten on the season thanks to goals by Kathryn Sloan and Brittany Beddow. In the 28th minute, Sloan won a 50/50 ball to set up a 20-yard strike into the far right corner. Later in the 54th minute, Beddow buried a penalty kick into the left corner.
DENNIS’ RECORD-BREAKING FOUR GOALS PROPELS LA TECH TO VICTORY (Sept. 19) When Taylor Dennis was a freshman, she recorded a hat trick which at the time tied for the most goals scored in a single game at Louisiana Tech. Then as a redshirt senior, the forward went one goal beyond that recording a record-breaking four goals in the 9-0 shutout win over Grambling State. LA Tech was already up 3-0 going into halftime, then a brand new starting XI came in for the second period, including Dennis and she came through with all four goals over a span of the next 27 minutes.
SLOAN DELIVERS TWO SECOND-HALF GOALS IN WIN AT ODU (Oct. 12) Sophomore forward Kathryn Sloan delivered two second-half goals and goalkeeper Kylee Seto recorded six saves as Louisiana Tech blanked Old Dominion, 2-0, at the ODU Soccer Complex. The victory was No. 10 on the season for LA Tech and it was the second straight weekend the Lady Techsters rebounded from a Friday loss to come back with a strong performance on Sunday.
SLOAN NAMED CAPITAL ONE ACADEMIC ALL-DISTRICT (Oct. 29) Striker Kathryn Sloan was named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-District team for women’s soccer, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America. She ranked in the top six in Conference USA in points, goals and assists. Even more impressive was her work in the classroom where she had a perfect 4.0 majoring in Communication Arts and Design.
LA TECH PUNCHES TICKET TO C-USA TOURNAMENT WITH GOLDEN GOAL (Oct. 30) 16
Louisiana Tech picked a perfect time to come up with its first golden goal of the season and it was a little extra golden. The match went into overtime at nil-nil as the Lady Techsters could not find the back of the net, hitting the crossbar, hitting the post and the rest being saved by Florida Atlantic’s goalkeeper. It seemed destined for a draw,

SALOMON-ALI, SLOAN SELECTED TO ALL-CONFERENCE USA TEAM (Nov. 4) After helping Louisiana Tech to a 13-6-3 overall record and an appearance in the tournament semifinals, Kathryn Sloan and Donya Salomon-Ali were selected to the All-Conference USA team as voted on by the league coaches. Sloan earned second team honors as a forward, ranking in the top six in C-USA in total points (28), goals (11) and assists (six). The sophomore also tied for first in game-winning goals with five which also tied for the most in program history. Salomon-Ali was named to the third team as a midfielder, but it was hard to pencil her in as playing just one position. The junior played up top at forward as a key target for headers and as a center back with the strong ability to clear balls.

but with three minutes remaining in the first OT, the FAU keeper made her first mistake of the night fumbling a save which was punched in by Brittany Beddow off the rebound for the 1-0 win in front of a rowdy crowd of 332 fans.
LA TECH BESTS UTEP ON PENALTY KICKS, ADVANCE TO C-USA SEMIFINALS (Nov. 5) Louisiana Tech did a massive dog pile after celebrating its win in the regular season finale to qualify for the Conference USA Tournament. Six days later in the quarterfinals at Transamerica Field, they got to dog pile once more as they upset the No. 3 seed UTEP, 3-2 on penalty kicks, to advance to the semifinals. With the game tied up at 1-1 and no golden goal scored in the two 10-minute overtime periods, LA Tech went three successful rounds with Lisanne Kleygrewe, Brittany Beddow and Taylor Dennis and picked up a missed shot right from UTEP to go up 3-2. On the next attempt by the Miners, Kylee Seto guessed left and saved it for the Lady Techsters. After UTEP’s Sarah Dilling responded with a save of her own, the Miners final attempt in round five hit off the right post giving LA Tech its first league tournament win in the program’s history.
TECHSTERS RECEIVE NSCAA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT YEAR (Nov. 25) Make it seven straight years for head coach Kevin Sherry and the Louisiana Tech soccer program as they once again received the NSCAA Team Academic Award. LA Tech was one of 582 women’s collegiate soccer teams which posted a team grade point average of 3.0 or higher, thereby earning the award for the 2013-14 academic year. The Lady Techsters were one of 10 Conference USA schools to receive this honor while also having the highest cumulative GPA in the state of Louisiana with a 3.37.
LA TECH CLAIMS TOP LSWA HONORS (Dec. 14) Louisiana Tech women’s soccer claimed two top Louisiana Sports Writers Association honors as head coach Kevin Sherry was named LSWA Coach of the Year and forward Kathryn Sloan was named LSWA Player of the Year. Also receiving honors were junior midfielder Brittany Beddow who joined Sloan on the first team and sophomore goalkeeper Kylee Seto who earned honorable mention. Coach Sherry guided LA Tech to a 13-6-3 overall record and its first-ever postseason victory, an upset of No. 3 seed UTEP, which led to a semifinal appearance in the Conference USA Tournament. The Lady Techsters were picked to finish 12th (out of 14) in the preseason with just two seniors on the roster.

2015 SEASON OUTLOOK The Louisiana Tech soccer team may be Lady Techsters, but their inner Bulldog came out twice this past season with two historic victories resulting in two elated dogpiles. The first one came at home in the regular season finale when a golden goal in overtime against Florida Atlantic clinched the program’s first spot in the Conference USA Tournament. The next one came six days later in the quarterfinals when a 4-2 edge on penalty kicks versus No. 3 seed UTEP sealed the upset and the program’s first ever postseason victory. All of this happened despite losing four of the first five league matches. A hard-fought 2-0 win at Old Dominion was the match that ended up turning the season around. The Techsters went on to post a 4-0-1 mark in the second half of the C-USA schedule to qualify for the tourney. LA Tech ended up registering a 13-6-3 record, the second most wins ever in a single season. Even better news is that almost the entire starting XI returns for 2015, joining forces with nine newcomers to make up what will arguably be the strongest and deepest squad ever assembled on the Lady Techster Soccer Complex.
FORWARD
18
Top strikers are hard to find at any level of the game and having depth at the forward position is something LA Tech has not had in past seasons … until now. Leading the pack is junior Kathryn Sloan who is coming off a standout season, being named second team All-Conference USA, NSCAA All-Central Region third team and the Louisiana Player of the Year. She led the team in points (28) and goals (11), becoming just the third Techster to record double-digit goals in a single season. Joining forces with Sloan up top is senior Donya SalomonAli who earned third team All-CUSA honors and junior Kailee Hervey, both of which are excellent at playing the ball in the air. The duo combined to score nine goals. “What makes me break out in goose bumps with excitement is the fact that this group will now be added to with the inclusion of Mylene Roy-Ouellet, Mariah Rojas, Kaitlyn Cunningham and Emma Mele,” head coach Kevin Sherry said. “Mylene is a power house of a striker, Mariah has a knack for scoring goals, Kaitlyn has pure speed and Emma is wing player with high-level dribbling skills.”

This new group will join forces with the seasoned group to provide a loaded front line with multiple skill sets to be used at coach Sherry’s disposal.
MIDFIELDER
Technical players are a necessity in the midfield for LA Tech and the rock at this position – Brittany Beddow – for the past three years returns for her senior season. Beddow was named first team All-Louisiana last year after accounting for seven goals and eight assists, a mark which tied the program record for most in a single season. It was her left foot that delivered the game-winning goal to send the team to Charlotte, N.C. for the conference tournament. There’s more depth returning and being added to the midfield, including one of the players to watch for this upcoming season in junior college transfer Moriah Phillips (better known as Yaya) who could be the missing jigsaw piece to elevate the position even more so. “Yaya is an intelligent player, strong in the tackle and positive to drive forward,” Sherry said. “It will be one of the highlights of the season seeing how she combines with the likes of Brittany Beddow, Lisanne Kleygrewe and Annabel Prior in the central area.” There is also senior Annie Armstrong and her endless energy to fit in the picture. Annie was named to the C-USA All-Tournament team for her equalizer against UTEP. Throw in experienced returners Erica Stewart, Keely Davis and Sarah Gifford who have all made great improvements in the last year, and the addition of Lady Tiriat from the recruiting class and you now have a dynamic midfield.
#WeAreLATech
Last season’s back line helped produce nine shutouts, four of which came in the last five games of the regular season during league play. The defensive line is probably the most inexperienced section of the team, but what they lack in experience they more than make up for with determination, effort and ability. Shouldering the majority of responsibility at the back will be senior Laura LeFevour and junior Madison Doll as well as returners Haley Laque, Olivia Millington and Monica Gebler who saw plenty of playing time in their freshman campaigns last year. “We have a solid group returning, but we have added to it with our incoming class bringing in more strength, athleticism and technical skill,” Sherry said. “I am excited to see how big an impact Makenna Johnson will have as she is someone we hope will form a good partnership with Madison. The inclusion of freshman Kendall Ayers will also provide the line a better balance because of her being a strong left-footed player.” This group of Lady Techsters is strong, but when you add in two players returning from injury in the form of Charity Simmons and Taylor Douglas, you know you have a very strong group who will be tough to break down.
GOALKEEPER
Returning in net is junior Kylee Seto who had 19 appearances with 18 starts this past season, accumulating a 10-6-3 record which helped her earn All-Louisiana honorable mention honors in her first full year as keeper. Seto improved immensely as the season progressed,

producing four clean sheets in the last five league games. She ended up allowing no more than one goal in nine of the 10 C-USA matches. The key position did take a hit though when backup Anna Lensing decided to return home to Germany, leaving a hole at such a key spot. Coach Sherry and assistant coach Josh Wagenaar were then presented the task of finding a replacement since it is crucial to two top goalkeepers on the team to help push each other. “The recruitment of Jezabelle Rubalcava was very important,” Sherry said. “Faith Washington and Maren Kreid have been working very hard, but it is still very early in their development so it was essential we brought someone in to push Kylee for that starting spot.”

SCHEDULE The 2015 schedule is once again an even split of 10 nonconference and 10 conference matches. The slate features plenty of regional matchups, one of which is right out of the gates with LA Tech taking the short bus trip to Monroe to face ULM on Aug. 21 in the season opener. The two teams will meet up on the pitch for just the second time ever, the other time coming eight years ago. “It is a well-balanced schedule with a lot of in-state and regional rivalries as part of our non-conference schedule mixed with a very tough league schedule,” Sherry said. “The season will start with a bang at ULM which will get the juices rolling.” Next up is the home opener on Aug. 23 against Lamar before the team travels to Troy, Ala. to participate in the Trojan Classic against South Alabama and host Troy. The Lady Techsters are very familiar with this tournament having played in it four times and winning it back in 2008. LA Tech will then have a split weekend of playing at Grambling State on Sept. 4 and hosting Nicholls State on Sept. 6. The most difficult road swing of the non-conference schedule follows with matches at Murray State and Arkansas State on Sept. 11 and 13, respectively. The last weekend before Conference USA play begins is a pair of SWAC opponents, starting with a home match against Southern on Sept. 18 and then a road contest versus Jackson State on Sept. 20. For the first time since joining the league, LA Tech will open the C-USA schedule at home with a meeting against Old Dominion on Sept. 25. Also for the first time, the Techsters will have home and away weekends as they turn around to play at WKU on Sept. 27. A second home/away weekend follows with a trip to UAB on Oct. 2 and then a return home to face Southern Miss on Oct. 4. LA Tech will then travel to the state of Florida to take on Florida Atlantic and FIU. The team finishes out the rest of the schedule with three of their final four games at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex with home matchups against UTEP and UTSA on Oct. 16 and 18, respectively. After a one-match weekend at Middle Tennessee, LA Tech will host reigning C-USA regular season champion North Texas on Oct. 30. FIU Soccer Stadium in Miami, Florida will serve as host for the 2015 C-USA Women’s Soccer Championship. The tournament begins on Nov. 4.

In 2009, after winning their first 11 games, Sherry led Tech to a 12-7-1 record, including the program’s first-ever league win. Tech scored the most goals (54), assists (45) and points (153) ever in a single season. In 2008, the Techsters were recognized for their significant improvement from their 2007 campaign when they went 2-14-1. Sherry and Co. posted a 105-5 record, an eight game improvement that the NCAA recognized along with three other schools, as one of the most improved teams in the nation. They also established a new shutouts record with 10 as they held their opponents scoreless in nine of their 10 wins. Shortly after the conclusion of the 2008 season, Sherry was selected to serve as U.S. Youth Olympic Development coach. Sherry was given the responsibility of coaching the Louisiana U-16 team and was also selected to instruct a coaching clinic for all high school coaches in the state of Louisiana. Sherry spent two years as head coach at Western Illinois. He inherited a program that was 24-111-7 over its history, including a 3-12-3 mark, the year prior to his arrival. Between the 2005 and 2006 seasons, he compiled a 20-13-4 record, and the program was recognized as one of the NCAA’s most improved. Before his arrival, the program had never experienced a winning season. He led Western Illinois to its first MidContinent Championship finals in 2006. Even though the Westerwinds lost the conference championship, they finished with an 11-7-1 record. Their 11 wins were the most victories in a season in school history. Sherry turned around another losing program as head women’s soccer coach at Graceland University. Prior to his arrival, the Yellowjackets never had a winning season in its history. That changed as well. He coached Graceland to records of 12-7-1 and 16-2-3 before he led the team to an 18-0-5 record in his final season. Their success equated to the school’s first undefeated season, the school’s first-ever Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Championship, an appearance in the NAIA Final Four and its highest national ranking of seventh by the NSCAA. For Sherry’s efforts, he was named NSCAA Central Region NAIA Women’s Coach of the Year. While being head coach at Graceland, Sherry also served as head coach of the Des Moines Menace U-15 Boys Super Y League and worked with the Iowa Olym-

WAGENAAR Assistant Coach
Josh Wagenaar enters his third season as an assistant coach for the Louisiana Tech soccer team. A former standout goalkeeper in Canada, Wagenaar has been instrumental in coaching keepers Kylee Seto and Caitlin Updyke in
net the past two years. In her first full season as the starting goalkeeper, Seto earned All-Louisiana honorable mention after posting seven shutouts in 19 appearances, four of which came during conference play. She registered at least seven saves in four matches, including a career-high nine in a nil-nil draw at Southern Miss. Seto took over for Updyke who was a second team All-Conference USA keeper in 2013 when she registered four shutouts against league foes with her best effort coming against C-USA champion Colorado College when she held the potent Tigers scoreless for 102 minutes while tallying a career-high 12 saves. Prior to joining the Lady Techster coaching staff, Wagenaar served for three years as the men’s and women’s goalkeeper coach at Graceland University. While with the Jackets, he coached the women to three consecutive Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Championships and National Tournament appearances while also developing the strength and conditioning programs. Under his tutelage, the Lady Jacket’s goalkeeper Stefany Cardozo garnered multiple honors including two conference defensive MVP awards, two first-team All-HAAC awards and was recently named the 2012 HAAC Player of the Year. As a player, he participated at all levels of soccer throughout his career. Wagenaar spent three seasons at Hartwick College where he was named Atlantic Soccer Conference Goalkeeper of the Week 11 different times. After playing for the Canadian National team in the divisions of U16, U17, U18 and U19, Wagenaar was named to the U20 team where he represented his country in two FIFA World Youth Championships. He then pursued a professional career overseas in Europe where he played for ADO Den Haag (The Netherlands), Lyngby BK (Denmark), Yeovil Town F.C. (England) and Falkirk F.C. (Scotland) during which time he was also a member of the U23 and full senior men’s Canadian National teams. Wagenaar earned a degree in Business Administration in May of 2012 from Graceland University and possesses an NSCAA National Coaching diploma and NSCAA Level III Goalkeeping diploma. Former Lady Techster great Kiva Gresham begins her four year with K I VA the soccer program after returning to Ruston as an assistant coach Assistant Coach for Kevin Sherry midway through the 2012 season. Gresham’s main responsibility is assisting with the development of the midfielders and strikers while also teaming with fellow assistant Josh Wagenaar in overseeing fitness and conditioning for the squad. This past season the Lady Techsters tallied 53 goals, the second most in program history. The offensive attack was led by Louisiana Player of the Year and second team All-Conference USA selection Kathryn Sloan who led LA Tech with 28 points and 11 goals. The year prior, she helped coach the forward who recorded a team-high seven goals, including the fastest scored goal in program history against Southern Miss which came only 11 seconds into the match. Coincidentally, the record was previously held by Gresham which she set back in 2008. During her playing career, Gresham was a star forward for four years at LA Tech. She currently holds the season record for most points (32) and is tied for most assists (eight). She also ranks in the top three in most goals (27), most assists (20) and most points (74) in a career. Originally from Albuquerque, N.M., Gresham has taken her love for the international sport and gone to the Caribbean where she participated in a coaching class in Trinidad and Tobago. SUCCESS ON THE PLAYING FIELD
Conference USA performers have achieved great success in competition, placing the league among the top conferences in the nation. Football • 88 teams have earned bowl bids • Eligible for the College Football Playoff • Conference USA has 11 bowl affiliations through the 2019 season, securing a minimum of five berths annually. Conference USA has primary bowl tie-ins with the Arizona Bowl, Boca Raton Bowl, Gildan New Mexico Bowl, Hawaii Bowl, Miami Beach Bowl, Popeyes Bahamas Bowl, R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl, St. Petersburg Bowl and Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl, along with secondary arrangements with the Independence Bowl and the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
SUCCESS OFF THE FIELD
C-USA institutions are among the nation’s best in academic performance of student-athletes, bolstered by the fact that student-athletes at league schools have a higher graduation rate than the general student population. Among C-USA’s 5,000 student-athletes, there are champions off the playing field as well. In 20 years, nearly 30,000 student-athletes have been named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll or received the Commissioner’s Academic Medal, indicative of outstanding achievement in the classroom.
C-USA ON TV
C-USA enjoys significant television exposure through partnerships with FOX Sports Media Group, CBS Sports Network, ESPN and American Sports Network (ASN). The multi-tiered selection process that is rooted in partnering with all four networks has substantially increased the number of national and regional appearances for football, men’s and women’s basketball, and all other conference sports. C-USA membership include institutions within eight of the Top 40 media markets and four in the Top 25 according to Nielsen. C-USA home markets this year will include more than 13 million TV households, a 30 percent increase from two years ago.
C-USA DIGITAL NETWORK
The C-USA Digital Network officially launched in August of 2011. Network programming includes live streaming of non-televised events, video on demand, a weekly C-USA studio show, podcasting, regular-season and championship event highlights, and conferenceproduced feature stories. In its first year, 1,164 events were streamed live and 8,126 videos were posted and available on the C-USA Digital Network, and those numbers have more than doubled. Monthly and yearly subscriptions provide fans access to events offered on all of the C-USA member institution’s athletic websites as well as C-USA network programming.
C-USA in the community
The conference’s current footprint is concentrated with 14 members in 10 states and a combined area population of more than 30 million. With a commitment to community involvement, the conference developed several initiatives to maintain strong ties in C-USA cities, as well as with fans and alumni across the country. C-USA schools also place a priority on giving back to their communities through volunteer service with local and national organizations. Individually, student-athletes are recognized each season through the Spirit of Service award.
GOVERNANCE
Conference USA has significant representation in the NCAA governance structure. The presidents of the member institutions serve as the league’s Board of Directors.

GUICE
University President @LKGuice Louisiana Tech University and President Les Guice share a rich history together that spans five decades and has produced family ties that are deeply rooted in a passion for the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters. From an architecture student stepping on the campus for the first time in 1972 to an appointment as Louisiana Tech’s 14th President in 2013, Dr. Guice has shown an unwavering commitment to leadership and service to his alma mater. One of Dr. Guice’s first achievements at Louisiana Tech was earning a bachelor of arts in architecture in 1976. Discovering a passion for engineering under the mentorship of Professor Jack Painter, Dr. Guice went on to earn a master’s degree in civil engineering from Tech in 1978. While working on his master’s degree, Dr. Guice also discovered a passion for teaching and education as a profession. Dr. Guice accepted a position as an assistant professor of civil engineering at Louisiana Tech in 1978 and was promoted to associate professor in 1981. A few short years after earning his Ph.D. in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1986, Dr. Guice was named the interim department head of civil engineering in Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering in 1988 and earned the permanent department head position and full professorship in 1989. As department head, Dr. Guice initiated the formation of the Civil Engineering Advisory Board and the Civil Engineering Distinguished Alumni recognition program, both of which significantly enhanced alumni participation and significantly enhanced fund-raising for the department. Throughout the next decade, Dr. Guice would continue to distinguish himself as an academician, researcher, administrator and leader. His dedication to his students, his faculty and the university would lead to his appointment as Dean of Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science (COES) in 1999. As Dean, Dr. Guice continued to encourage and support innovations in the curricula. The College’s faculty became increasingly successful in securing external funding for the integrated curriculum which resulted in a transformative redesign of curricula throughout the College. Dr. Guice’s leadership and vision also reinvigorated the Engineering and Science Foundation to more effectively serve the needs of the College. He initiated a new integrated strategic plan, known as “COES 2010,” and capital campaign, “Tech’s BEST,” that led advancement of the college and to funding for an Eminent Scholar Chair, 15 Professorships, $500k Scholarship Fund, and several new laboratories and facilities. Dr. Guice leadership also helped to guide the Institute for Micromanufacturing (IfM) toward a focus on the emerging field of nanotechnology. With the hiring of key nanotechnology faculty in numerous disciplines, further expansion of research laboratories, establishment of an interdisciplinary engineering PhD program with a nanotechnology track, and initiation of a B.S. in Nanosystems Engineering, the IfM and COES established strong research and education nanotechnology programs that have received national recognition. In 2004, Dr. Guice’s performance and accomplishments as dean of the College of Engineering and Science led to his appointment as Louisiana Tech’s vice president for research and development. During his tenure as vice president and as executive vice president in 2012, Louisiana Tech has significantly increased patents, licenses/options, start-up companies, SBIR grants with affiliated companies, and has established strong industry partnerships for commercialization of technologies. Dr. Guice also led the establishment of Louisiana Tech’s first two technology incubators, the Rawle and Humana Enterprise Centers. With a focus on the future and a progressive vision for economic development, Dr. Guice has led the planning and development of the Louisiana Tech Enterprise Campus – a research park connecting the university and downtown Ruston. Enterprise Campus’ first building, Tech Pointe, was completed in 2012 and is now home for several companies and organizations, including an Air Force funded Cyberspace Research

Laboratory. With the recent completion of Louisiana Tech’s new College of Business building and renovation to University Hall as a home for interdisciplinary entrepreneurship and innovation activities, the first phase of Enterprise Campus is nearing completion. Dr. Guice’s reputation for exemplary leadership has not been bound by the campus or the region. Roles in statewide leadership have included election to serve as the founding Chair for the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) Management Council, serving as Chair of the Louisiana EPSCoR Committee, and leading the development of a statewide science and technology plan, called FIRST Louisiana. Dr. Guice currently serves as Chair of the Board of Regents Master Plan Research Advisory Council and as chair of the Louisiana Innovation Council. Among the many awards and recognitions Dr. Guice has earned during his career is the Robert E. Russ Award from the Ruston/Lincoln Parish Chamber of Commerce (2009), Outstanding Civil Engineer from the ASCE Louisiana Section (2008), Louisiana Tech University Civil Engineering Distinguished Alumnus (2007), Louisiana Engineering Society’s James M. Todd Technological Accomplishment Award (2007), Governor’s University Technology Leader of the Year Award (2006), and Louisiana Engineering Society A.B. Patterson Medal for an Engineer in Management (2004.) On December 4, 2012, during a special session of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, Dr. Guice was unanimously voted to serve as the 14th President of Louisiana Tech University. Dr. Guice officially took over as President on July 1, 2013. As President of Louisiana Tech, Dr. Guice is the chief executive officer of north Louisiana’s only Carnegie Foundation national research university and one of only two public universities from Louisiana recognized in the top tier of national universities by U.S. News and World Report. Dr. Guice leads a university that most recently has been ranked #11 in the nation in a list of “Most Underrated Colleges In America” (Business Insider), #17 in the nation in a list of “Low Cost Colleges with High Starting Salaries for Graduates” (Affordable Colleges Online), and #21 in the nation for providing its graduates with the best returns on their investments (AdvisorOne.) Throughout his career, Dr. Guice has contributed to and played a central role in creating the culture and vision for the future of Louisiana Tech, and continues that commitment as President. Dr. Guice’s focus on campus-wide engagement, building and growing relationships, and leadership in forging a path toward advancement of the university’s academic and athletic programs, research and commercialization activities, and economic development efforts means that Louisiana Tech University’s best days are yet to come. Dr. Guice is a native of Monroe and grew up in Bastrop. He and his wife, Kathy, have three sons – Kyle, Chad, and Bret – one grandson, Christopher, and twin granddaughters, Elizabeth and Everly.

TOMMY
McCLELLAND Director of Athletics @TMcClelland Louisiana Tech boasts one of the rising young stars in the industry in Athletics Director Tommy McClelland, who enters his third year in Ruston after an impressive debut. McClelland joined the LA Tech Family when University President Les Guice introduced him as the new athletics director during a press conference at the Charles Wyly Athletic Center on July 16, 2013. McClelland, the youngest AD among all Football Bowl Subdivision athletic programs, came to Ruston after serving six years in the same position at McNeese State in Lake Charles. His first two years in north Louisiana have been successful ones. McClelland’s philosophy of developing student-athletes into champions on the playing fields, in the class room and in life is the cornerstone of his leadership style. While leading Louisiana Tech into the Conference USA era, McClelland impacted the athletics department through fundraising, facility improvements, coaching hires and overall student-athlete development. Shortly after his hiring, McClelland re-energized the LA Tech fanbase when he joined President Guice in an October press conference revealing the updated plans for the $22 million Davison Athletics Complex located in the south endzone of Joe Aillet Stadium - the centerpiece of the University’s Quest for Excellence capital campaign. McClelland completed the fundraising needed for the project, and the new facility opened in August of 2015. The three-story facility, 70,000-plus square foot building benefits all of Louisiana Tech’s student-athletes; it includes a new state-of-the-art strength and conditioning complex utilized by all 16 of the University’s athletic programs. The building also houses football coaches’ offices, football locker room, team and position meeting rooms, club seating and a multi-functional dining space that can be utilized for athletic and campus events. It will generate an additional $500,000 annually in revenue. Another marquee addition to the Louisiana Tech athletic facilities during McClelland’s tenure is the $1.2 million Paul Millsap Vision presented by Community Trust Bank, a high definition video display board in the Thomas Assembly Center. The project also included a customized sound system for the Thomas Assembly Center and a video board control room, which will be utilized for both football and basketball. These two major facility improvements and additional smaller scale projects were made possible through a pair of record-setting years in fundraising. During the 2013-14 fiscal year, McClelland spearheaded the efforts in raising more than $10.8 million through both LTAC and Quest for Excellence; more than double any previous year in Tech Athletics history. Included in the record total were five, seven-figure gifts. The 2014-15 fiscal year saw record totals in Louisiana Tech Athletic Club (LTAC) unrestricted donations -- both in dollar figures and in total number of donors. It also included increases in ticket sales in football, men’s and women’s basketball. Tech had plenty of success stories on the playing fields during the past two years, led by the Bulldog basketball team winning back-toback Conference USA regular season titles and advancing into the NIT with impressive road wins over SEC foe Georgia (2014) and Texas A&M (2015). The Dunkin’ Dawgs tied the program single season wins record (29) in 2014 and totaled 56 wins during the two year span. On the gridiron, the Bulldog football team captured the Conference USA West Division title in 2014, recording a 9-5 overall record and barely falling to Marshall in the C-USA title game. Tech earned an invitation to the Heart of Dallas Bowl and promptly defeated Big 10 foe Illinois 35-18. In addition to the men’s basketball and football successes, the Lady Techster tennis team recorded one of its best seasons in program history, posting a 15-7 record and earning the No. 5 seed in the C-USA championships. First-year head coach Chad Camper earned the Louisiana Sports Writers Association Coach of the Year Award, and the Lady Techsters earned their first ever regional ranking, finishing seventh in the
LATechSports.com
southern region of the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings. Tech sophomore Victor Lange became the first Bulldog golfer ever to earn an NCAA Regional appearance and competed in the San Antonio Region and Lubbock region the past two years. McClelland also made some tough personnel decisions, making coaching changes in both women’s basketball and baseball. McClelland made a national splash with the hiring of Tyler Summitt to lead the tradition-rich Lady Techster basketball program. Summitt, son of legendary Tennessee Lady Vols coach Pat Summitt, is the youngest head coach of any Division I women’s basketball program. He brought instant national notoriety back to the program and led a senior-laden to a winning record in year No. 1 while beginning the process of changing the culture. Summitt and the Techsters were featured by national outlets such as CBS 60-Minute Sports, NBC Nightly News, USA Today, ESPN.com, ESPN SportsCenter, New York Times, Sports Illustrated and more. He also hired one of the rising stars in college baseball in Greg Goff, a 21-year coaching veteran who recently led Campbell to its third straight 40-win season. The Camels joined LSU, Florida State, Oregon, Oregon State, Louisville, South Carolina and Rice as the only NCAA Division I baseball programs with at least 40 victories in each of the past three years. Goff led the program to this year’s NCAA Regionals. In year No. 1 at Tech, Goff guided the Bulldogs to within one game of a .500 record, which was a 10-game improvement in the win column over the previous season. Prior to coming to Ruston, McClelland made a national name for himself after quickly elevating to the athletics director position at age 26. He earned high praise from a number of high-profile, experienced athletic administrators. “Tommy McClelland is an outstanding leader and one of the nation’s rising stars in intercollegiate athletics,” said Bubba Cunningham, athletics director at the University of North Carolina. “He has a demonstrated commitment to supporting and developing his coaches and student-athletes and has already become well-known among ADs for his leadership, vision and character. Tommy has also shown a dedication to lifelong learning and the application of his skills and talents to making his athletic programs better.” Prior to being named athletic director at McNeese State on March 19, 2008, McClelland served as interim athletic director and assistant athletic director of internal affairs at the university. In his time at McNeese, McClelland and his staff had numerous success stories when it came to increased revenue streams and the overall game-day experience in Lake Charles. He raised more than $3 million in private donations, and he was instrumental in increasing corporate sponsorships to nearly $1 million, while securing new clients and multi-year sponsorships. McClelland was also responsible for increasing football season ticket sales: the program eclipsed the 8,000 mark in 2008 with a high of 8,035 in 2009. In addition, he was instrumental in setting single-game attendance records in baseball, volleyball, softball, soccer, women’s basketball and women’s tennis.

M A R Y K AY
HUNGATE Deputy Athletics Director/ Senior Woman Administrator
Deputy Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator Mary Kay Hungate enters her 30th year as a member of the Louisiana Tech Athletics Department and has proven to be an integral part in the emergence of the University’s programs on the playing fields and in the classroom.
@LATechSOC
Not only does Hungate serve as the sports administrator for softball, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s track and field, and women’s bowling, but she is also in charge of NCAA compliance for all of the university’s 16 NCAA sanctioned programs. As one of the top two ranking administrators in the Tech Athletics Department, Hungate is part of a senior staff that was instrumental in helping the University earn an invitation to join Conference USA starting July 1, 2013. Hungate serves a vital role in the hiring of head coaches. She served as the point person in the hiring process of head women’s soccer coach Kevin Sherry. Sherry led the Lady Techster soccer team to four straight winning seasons (the first ones in program history), the program’s first appearance in the WAC Tournament in 2010 and the program’s first postseason win in the 2014 Conference USA Tournament. She has also been involved in the hiring of a number of other highly successful coaches, including current Lady Techster basketball coach Tyler Summitt, son of legendary Tennessee coach Pat Summitt. Another of Hungate’s responsibilities includes overseeing the academic side of the Tech athletics department, another area which has improved drastically as proven by the fact LA Tech’s graduation rate continues to be one of the highest in the state (Federal Graduation Report). Louisiana Tech’s student-athletes continue to reach academic progress superlatives. For the seventh straight year the University recorded all-time highs in the most recent Federal Graduation Rate Report released by the NCAA last October. Tech’s student-athletes recorded a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 81 percent and a Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) of 60 percent, which both were improvements over last year’s numbers. Louisiana Tech’s 81 percent graduation success rate ranks as the second highest in the state among Division I football-playing public institutions. LA Tech’s graduation success rate is one percentage points higher than last year’s (80) and easily outdistances the state average of 69 percent among the other nine Division I football-playing public institutions in the state of Louisiana. Tech also recorded the second highest federal graduation rate of any Division I football-playing public institution in the state at 60 percent, which also bests last year’s mark of 59 percent. The success of Louisiana Tech’s student-athletes in the classroom was across the board as 14 of the 16 Division I sanctioned athletic programs recorded at least a 70 percent GSR led by men’s golf, women’s basketball and women’s tennis with 100 percent scores. The Lady Techster basketball team’s GSR ranked first in the state (tied with Tulane and Centenary) and first in C-USA (tied with Rice and Middle Tennessee). One of the most impressive numbers in comparison to program’s across the country was posted by the Bulldog football team which recorded a 77 percent GSR, which ranks first in the state of Louisiana among public institutions and fourth among all Conference USA programs (behind only Rice, UTSA and Middle Tennessee). Hungate also plays an important role in LA Tech’s NCAA Certification process. As a member of the Steering Committee and the liaison between the athletic department and the University’s Self Study Committees, she provides the information needed for the committees to write their reports. In addition, Hungate and the current senior staff have also garnered a number of national awards, including the 2010 Turnkey PRISM Award which recognizes colleges for managerial excellence across four areas: marketing/branding; fan development; community relations; and customer/client service. The Tech athletics department also finished in the Top 10 three times in the Excellence in Management Cup, which recognizes the most efficient athletic departments in the nation. Hungate joined the Louisiana Tech staff in 1985 as an assistant women’s basketball coach and remained in that role for five years. During that time, the Lady Techsters participated in four Final Fours and won the NCAA National Championship in 1988. In 1990, Hungate made a move out of coaching and became assistant athletics director for academics and compliance as well as senior woman administrator. One of Hungate’s early accomplishments as assistant director of athletics was the creation of the Louisiana Tech Athletic Academic Center program. Hungate has served terms on the NCAA Division I Academics/ Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet, the NCAA Division I Interpretations/Legislative Review Subcommittee, the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators Wade Trophy Selection Committee and as an NCAA Peer Reviewer. “Tommy is a rising star in the college athletics administration field and, in my view, the ideal leader to advance Louisiana Tech’s athletics program as it transitions into Conference USA,” said Ian McCaw, athletics director at Baylor University. “He possesses impeccable integrity and has an extraordinary work ethic. Moreover, his interpersonal and relational skills are outstanding and will enable him to quickly connect with Bulldog fans as well as campus and community leaders.” One of McClelland’s main goals was to improve the life of the student-athletes and increase the game-day experience for the McNeese State fan base. One of the most effective ways to accomplish these goals was by improving the facilities. During his time at McNeese State, he oversaw a combined total of over $11 million dollars in facility renovation and new construction. The combination of increased revenue streams, renovations and new construction, and a highly-involved fan base led to plenty of success stories on the playing fields. During his tenure as athletic director, McNeese won Southland Conference championships in football (2007, 2009), soccer (2006, tournament; 2007, regular season), softball (2010, tournament; 2013, regular season), men’s basketball (2011, regular season), women’s basketball (2011, regular season; 2011 and 2012 tournament) and men’s cross country (2012). The women’s basketball program made its first appearances ever in the NCAA Tournament, and the men’s basketball program hosted the first round of the NIT postseason tournament (Boston College live on ESPNU). Even more impressive is the fact that while the Cowboy and Cowgirl programs were capturing titles on the fields, the University’s student-athletes were making tremendous strides in the classroom. In five of McClelland’s six years as athletics director, McNeese State led the Southland Conference in the number of student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In addition, McClelland guided the resurgence in APR success in Lake Charles. The number of athletic programs boasting the required APR score of 925 went from four in his first year to all 16 in his final year. The community service hours performed by the MSU student-athletes also tripled to more than 3,000 during his tenure. “Tommy has a great knowledge of college athletics and excels at helping his student-athletes balance and succeed in their commitments to academics and athletics,” said Warde Manuel, athletics director at the University of Connecticut. “Tommy has also proven his ability to work effectively with coaches and administrators to help his programs be successful.” McClelland earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State in 2004 and completed his master’s degree in sports administration in 2005. He walked on with the Demons football team and eventually earned a scholarship; he also competed in the javelin for the NSU track and field team. The native of Basile, Louisiana served as a graduate assistant at Northwestern State in athletics and also worked at the Southland Conference office as an administrative intern, assisting with championship events. McClelland is also a 2012 graduate of the Executive Program of the Sports Management Institute and attended instruction at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. McClelland is married to the former Jessica Stokes of Garrison, Texas. They have two sons, Lawson (5) and Grayson (4).

the Code Book Committee. In addition, along with Athletics Director Tommy McClelland, she represents the athletics department as an exofficio member of the LA Tech Athletics Council. Hungate’s professional career began as Women’s Sports Coordinator and head volleyball, head basketball and head softball coach at Illinois’ Carl Sandburg Junior College. She spent four seasons at the college where she guided the basketball team to a mark of 80-22 which included an 11th place finish in the 1976 NJCAA national tournament. In 1978 Hungate took over the head coaching position at Richwoods High School in Peoria, Ill., and quickly compiled one of the top prep coaching records in the nation. During her seven seasons at Richwoods High School, Hungate’s team ran up an impressive record of 195-13, including a state-record 63 consecutive victories. Hungate was named the National Coach of the Year by USA Today in 1985. Before coming to Louisiana Tech, Hungate amassed a career coaching record of 275-35.
