A LA TECH WIN...

• Would give the Bulldogs their sixth straight win over the Panthers. LA Tech has won eight of the last nine meetings.

• Would give the Bulldogs back-to-back wins over the Panthers in Miami, someting that has happened only once before (200001) when the two programs were in the Sun Belt Conference.

• Would put an end to the Bulldogs’ five-game road losing streak in conference games. The last time LA Tech lost six straight CUSA games was during the 2018-19 season.

BULLDOG STORYLINES & PROJECTED STARTERS

• Louisiana Tech will have another shot to crack the road code as the Bulldogs face the FIU Panthers in Miami at the FIU Convocation Center. LA Tech has suffered losses in all five road CUSA games.

• For the first time in 58 games (since Feb. 23, 2023), LA Tech did not lead at any point as the Bulldog fell, 77-53, to the Liberty Flames on Thursday. It was the second fewest points scored for the ‘Dogs this season. Turnovers were an issue again, committing 16 of them which was turned into 24 points for the Flames.

• The Bulldogs have not been able to find their offense on the road in CUSA, averaging just 59.6 points while shooting 38.9 percent from the field and 26.8 percent from three-point range. The opposite is true for the home CUSA games with LA Tech averaging 75.6 points while shooting 46.1 percent. Another stark contrast is getting to the foul line where the Bulldogs are shooting 74.8 percent, second best in the league. In the road league games, they are averaging 11.2 free throw attempts per game while at home they are getting to the charity stripe on average 26.0 times.

• The bench was the lone bright spot offensively for LA Tech at Liberty. Al Green stepped in to score a game-high 18 points, going 7-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from three (made four of the Bulldogs six triples). It marked the fifth time this season with 18+ points in a game. Meanwhile, Sean Elkinton netted 11 points as the forward is averaging 8.3 points during conference action. The duo are combining to shoot 43.1 percent from deep in CUSA play.

• Sean Newman Jr. continues to rank second in the country in both total assists (204) and assists per game (8.9). With the six assists at Liberty, the point guard became just the fourth Bulldog in program history to reach 200 assists in a single season. He did so in 23 games, the fastest ever. He has dished out at least five assists in all but one contest this season.

• Daniel Batcho was held in check against the Flames, registering just eight points and five rebounds. It was only the second time this season the power forward did not reach double-digit points. Even so, he continues to be the nation’s leader in field goal percentage at 70.2 percent. He also tallied one block, bringing his season total to 51 which ranks 13th in the country. He is currently one of only three players in the country (along with Ryan Kalkbrenner of Creighton and Johni Broome of Auburn) to be averaging at least 18 points, seven rebounds, and two blocks per game.

• Talvin Hester is in his third season at the helm at LA Tech. In his second year, Hester was able to blend in seven newcomers in route to a 22-win season and a second-place finish in CUSA. He will be tasked with the same thing as seven newcomers join the 2024-25 squad, mixed in with six returners (five of which made a combined 67 starts last season).

• LA Tech was picked to finish first in the Conference USA preseason poll, as voted on by the league head coaches. It was definitely not unanimous as five of the 10 conference teams picked up at least one first-place vote and the top three were separated by only four points. This marks the first time since 2014 that the Bulldogs are preseason league favorites.

HEAD COACH | 3RD SEASON

Talvin Hester heads into year three as the head coach of the Louisiana Tech men’s basketball program. The 19th head coach in program history was named NABC District 11 Coach of the Year and a Ben Jobe Award finalist after guiding LA Tech to a 22-10 overall record in his second season at the helm, a 7-win improvement from year one with the Bulldogs.

LA Tech registered a 12-4 CUSA record, finishing second in the league. The Bulldogs went 8-7 in road games, including a 6-2 mark in league contests away from home which was the best winning percentage in such games since 2013.

They ranked as the top CUSA team in both NET rankings and KenPom while sporting one of the best defenses in the country. The Bulldogs ranked seventh in the nation in field goal percentage defense, allowing teams to shoot just 39.1 percent (lowest in program history since the 1957-58 season). LA Tech held 20 teams under 40 percent shooting this season, tied for the third most in the country. They also ranked 16th in the nation in scoring defense, holding their opponents to 64.5 points per game.

Among the players Hester helped develop were Isaiah Crawford who was voted CUSA Player of the Year and CUSA Defensive Player of the Year as well as Daniel Batcho who was selected as the CUSA Newcomer of the Year. Crawford, who is now with the Sacramento Kings organization, and Batcho were joined by Tahlik Chavez and Sean Newman Jr. as All-Conference honorees, the most in program history since 1985.

He guided LA Tech to a 15-win season in his first season at the helm, picking up his first ever victory in the season opener against Mississippi College as well as claiming the title of the Samford MTE with wins over Alabama A&M, Tennessee-Southern, and host Samford.

Hester brought 20 years of coaching experience back to Ruston, a place he spent three seasons (2018-21) as an assistant coach with the Bulldogs. He departed for Texas Tech, spending one season as an assistant coach where he helped the third-seeded Red Raiders reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.

While in Lubbock this past season working under new head coach and Associated Press Big 12 Coach of the Year Mark Adams, Texas Tech put together a 27-win season including victories over Montana State and Notre Dame to help the program make its fifth Sweet 16 appearance in program history. TTU, which had five All-Big 12 selections, was ranked as high as No. 9 in the country and reached the Big 12 championship final for just the second time in program history.

During his three successful years at LA Tech under Eric Konkol, Hester helped the Bulldogs register three 20+ winning seasons. The 2020-21 season saw the ‘Dogs register a 24-8 overall record while claiming a Conference USA West Division title and a third place finish in the National Invitation Tournament. The team received an at-large berth to play in the NIT for the first time since 2015 and became just the second team in program history to make the Final Four.

In his second season in 2019-20, the Bulldogs registered a 22-8 overall record during the regular slate, but the team did not have a chance at postseason play with the Conference USA and NCAA/NIT Tournaments being canceled due to the public health threat of COVID-19. The 22 wins ended up being the most victories of any Conference USA team and of any Louisiana Division I team. The Bulldogs also recorded a 13-5 league record, finishing in a tie for second place.

In his first year with the ‘Dogs, Hester helped the team to 20 victories. Eight of the 20 victories came against teams who also produced 20-win seasons, the most in program history. One of those came in the season opener at Wichita State as the Bulldogs shocked the Shockers, handing them only their fourth loss in their last 76 games at home.

During his two stints at LA Tech, Hester helped coach All-Conference USA selections DaQuan Bracey (First Team), Kenneth Lofton Jr. (Third Team and C-USA Freshman of the Year), and Isaiah Crawford (Third Team twice) as well as Cobe Williams who was a two-time member of the CUSA All-Defensive Team, and Jordan Crawford who was one of five players chosen to the CUSA All-Freshman Team for the 2022-23 season.

Along with stops at Texas Tech and Louisiana Tech, Hester spent the majority of his coaching career in the south, especially in the Lone Star State. He spent time at Oral Roberts, Houston, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, San Jose State, Prairie View A&M, Texas College, Texas Wesleyan, and North Lake College during his career.

Hester coached at Oral Roberts (2017-18) with head coach Paul Mills where Hester was instrumental in the recruitment of Kevin Obanor who would help lead the team to the 2021 Sweet 16. He also worked for Kelvin Sampson at Houston from 2014-17, helping turnaround the Cougars program which reached the 2020 Final Four. Hester spent one season as an assistant coach at Texas State (2013-14) and Stephen F. Austin (2012-13). While with the Lumberjacks, the team posted a 27-5 overall record and claimed the Southland Conference regular season title.

Louisiana Tech claimed its 18th straight victory in a home opener, improving to 38-5 all-time in home openers in the TAC.

LA Tech won its fifth straight game over UTA. The Bulldogs have now won 13 of the last 14 meetings in the series.

The Bulldogs won their second ever game in the state of New York. Their lone win prior came in the 1986 NIT at Madison Square Garden when LA Tech defeated Florida.

LA Tech shot 67.8 percent from the field against Mississippi College, their highest shooting percentage since 1997. Daniel Batcho scored a career-high 38 points, the most by a Bulldog in a single game since Alex Hamilton scored 38 at Marshall in 2016.

The Bulldogs extended their winning streak to five games, marking the 16th straight season LA Tech has had at least a streak of five wins.

GAME 6 | LA TECH VS. RICHMOND

Sean Newman Jr. eclipsed 200 career assists as a Bulldog after recording a game-high eight dimes. He did so in just 34 games, tying for the fastest to 200 assists in program history.

GAME 7 | LA TECH VS. EKU

LA Tech was crowned the “unofficial” champion of the 2024 Gulf Coast Showcase after being the lone team to win all three games. The Bulldogs improved to 6-0 when playing in the tournament (won the 2013 GSC).

GAME 8 | LA TECH VS. SOUTHERN

Daniel Batcho posted a season-high six blocks, one shy of tying his career high. It marked the second time in his Bulldog career with at least six rejections in a single game.

GAME 9 | LA TECH AT MEMPHIS

LA Tech made a season-high 13 three-pointers against nationally ranked Memphis. It was the most made threes in a road game since making 13 at WKU in 2023.

With the win, LA Tech now leads the all-time series against UL-Lafayette, 93-77. It marked the Bulldogs 10th all-time victory over ULL in the Cajundome (first since 2018).

GAME 11 | LA TECH VS. GSU

The Bulldogs improved to 2-0 against Sun Belt Conference schools this season, beating ULL and GSU. LA Tech has won five straight matchups sand 13 of its last 14 versus current SBC opponents.

The Bulldogs registered their 176th home victory in their last 200 games in the Thomas Assembly Center (own a 176-24 record).

LA Tech dished out 33 assists, which is a new program record (previous record was 31 set back in 1971). Sean Newman Jr. had 20 of those assists, which set a new program and Conference USA single-game record.

GAME 14 | LA TECH AT UTEP

Daniel Batcho extended two individual streaks – 21 straight games scoring in double figures and 18 straight games registering at least one block (third longest in the last 20 years).

The Bulldogs were held to a season-low 48 points, the fewest in a regular season game since scoring 40 at Charlotte in 2019.

Sean Newman Jr. registered 13 assists against FIU, tying the program record for most assists in a Conference USA game (most since 2014). The point guard also became the 15th Bulldog in program history to reach 300 career assists.

GAME 17 | LA TECH VS. LIBERTY

The Bulldogs played their 100th Conference USA game in the Thomas Assembly Center, improving to 82-18 in such games. Talvin Hester also reached a milestone in picking up his 50th career win as head coach at LA Tech.

The Bulldogs shot a season-low two free throw attempts against Jacksonville State. It was the fewest free throw attempts in a single game since LA Tech shot only two against South Alabama in 1996.

The Bulldogs scored 46 second-half points, marking the 10th time in 19 games they have scored 40+ points in the second stanza.

The Bulldogs set season highs for made FTs (29) and FT attempts (42). Both were the most by LA Tech in a single game since 2015 against Jackson State. The 42 free throw attempts tied the program record in a CUSA game.

Daniel Batcho scored a game-high 25 points to go along with a season-high 12 rebounds. It marked the third time this season and the sixth time in his Bulldog career having a 20-10 game.

LA Tech won its second overtime game of the season. The Bulldogs are 7-3 in OT games under head coach Talvin hester.

Sean Newman Jr. became the fourth Bulldog in program history to eclipse 200 assists in a single game. He did so in 23 games, the fastest in school history.

Following a 74-66 home win over WAC preseason favorite Grand Canyon, head coach Talvin Hester was posed with a question about Sean Newman Jr. being underrated nationally.

His quick reply ... “He’s not underrated anymore.”

Newman Jr. scored a career-high 25 points to go along with nine assists versus the Lopes. He made or assisted on 17 of the Bulldogs 28 field goal attempts, scoring seven of the team’s last nine points to grab the victory.

In doing so, he eclipsed 100 assists for the season, reaching that milestone in 12 games which is the fastest in program history.

He turned around the next game and set a new LA Tech and CUSA single-game record with 20 assists versus Rust College (earned him CUSA Player of the Week honors). He already has seven games with 10+ assists this season, third most in program history.

Sean Newman Jr. and Daniel Batcho have a special chemistry on the basketball court. In fact, 38 percent of Batcho’s field goals (58 of 153) are assisted by Newman Jr.

Three times this season, Newman Jr. has recorded at least five assists to Batcho -- 5 at UT Arlington, 7 vs. Mississippi College, and 5 vs. Rust College.

With Daniel Batcho leading the country in field goal percentage, it is no wonder that the opposing team’s only way to stop him from scoring is to foul him.

Batcho ranks 28th in the country in free throw attempts (152) and is currently averaging 5.5 fouls drawn per game (126 total). He has drawn at least seven fouls in eight games this season.

STARTERS DOIN’ THE SCORING

As a byproduct of LA Tech’s injuries throughout the season causing a short bench, the starters have done the bulk of the scoring.

The Bulldogs’ starters have accounted for 69.7 percent of the team’s scoring this season (1,201 points). In fact in the game against Richmond, the starters scored 62 of the 65 points and in the game against Grand Canyon the starters scored 72 of the 74 points (both wins).

LA Tech currently ranks 9th in CUSA and 256th in the country in bench points per game (18.39).

DOWN, BUT NEVER OUT

LA Tech has gotten off to slow starts for the majority of the time this season. So much so that the Bulldogs have either been tied or trailed at halftime in 13 of their 23 games.

The team has turned it on in the second half though, registering a 8-5 record in those games. For reference, the Bulldogs were a combined 6-18 in the last two seasons when tied or trailing at halftime.

The last time LA Tech had a winning record in such games was the 2015-16 season when they went 10-7.

The Bulldogs received a fresh look for the 2024-25 season in the form of new uniforms (white, blue, and red).

Then on Dec. 13, they showcased a brand new Black uniform with “Dunkin’ Dogs” across the chest.

The second-half comebacks have in large part been a result of LA Tech’s second-half offense.

This season in the second stanza, the Bulldogs are shooting 49.5 percent from the field (312-630). They have scored 40+ points in the second half 12 times as opposed to the first half where they have only scored 40+ points five times.

LA Tech picked up its 10th victory of the season on Dec. 16 in a 74-66 win over Grand Canyon.

Following the victory over Rust College in the final non-conference game of the regular season, the Bulldogs improved to 11-2 which was the best start through 13 games since 2015. It marked the 11th time in program history that LA Tech has won at least 11 times through its first 13 contests.

Before the undefeated season was snapped on Nov. 30, LA Tech was one of only 19 remaining teams in college basketball that had a perfect record.

GULF COAST SHOWCASE CHAMPS

Even though there was not a trophy handed out, Louisiana Tech claimed itself as the “unofficial” champions of the 2024 Gulf Coast Showcase after being the only team to go a perfect 3-0.

The Bulldogs needed comebacks in all three games to come out victorious.

The Bulldogs improved to 6-0 all-time at the multi-team event as they were also the inaugural champions of the 2013 Gulf Coast Showcase when they defeated UNC Greensboro, UIC, and then St. Bonaventure in the finals.

BATCHO MAN

Daniel Batcho was one of the most productive power forwards in college basketball last season, earning numerous postseason honors including CUSA Newcomer of the Year, First Team All-CUSA, and CUSA All-Defensive Team.

He was one of only three players in the country to average at least 15 points, nine rebounds, and two blocks per game (became just the second Bulldog in program history to do so along with Paul Millsap in 2005-06). One of those other two players was Zach Edey of Purdue who was the national Player of the Year.

He was the team and league leader in blocks with 67 (11th most in program history), averaging 2.39 rejections per contest which ranked 10th in the nation.

Batcho also posted 11 double-doubles in 28 games played, scoring in double-figures in 24 of those and pulling down double-digit boards 14 times. Because of all this, it was no surprise that he was voted as the CUSA Preseason Player of the Year, marking the second straight year a Bulldog has received this preseason honor (Isaiah Crawford, 2023-24).

The point guard had a standout season in his first year with the Bulldogs, leading LA Tech and CUSA in total assists with 146 and assists per game at 5.2, which ranked 42nd in the country. He posted a season-high 10 assists at FIU and had nine in back-to-back games versus Grand Canyon and Dallas Christian.

In the second game of the 2024-25 season, Newman Jr. broke his assist record as a Bulldog with 11 dimes at UT Arlington. He broke it again one game later, dishing out 12 assists against UMass, and again with 14 assists versus Mississippi College. Then on Dec. 21 against Rust College, he set the LA Tech and CUSA single-game record with 20 assists.

Newman Jr. recorded another assist milestone after tallying 13 against FIU on Jan. 9. He became the 15th Bulldog in program history to reach 300 career assists.

RIM PROTECTOR

Not many have success driving to the basket with 6-foot-11 Daniel Batcho protecting the rim. He ranked 10th in the country last season with an average fo 2.39 rejections per game.

The redshirt senior has recorded at least one block in 44 of his 50 games played as a Bulldog, recently having his streak of 18 straight games with a block snapped.

With his three blocks against Grand Canyon (Dec. 16), he became the eighth Bulldog in program history to eclipse 100 rejections). He currently ranks seventh in school history in total blocks with 118 and 13th in the country this season with 51 blocks.

JEFFRESS OUT FOR THE SEASON

Redshirt senior Will Jeffress underwent successful knee surgery to repair a season-ending injury suffered during the game against UMass on Nov. 13.

The Bulldog had started all three games and was averaging 12.5 points and 8.0 rebounds going into the UMass contest.

He came to Ruston after spending the last four seasons at Pittsburgh, just two hours from his hometown of Erie. Jeffress graduated in 3.5 years from Pitt with two degrees in Psychology and Communications. He was a three-time ACC All-Academic Team selection and a 2024 Academic All-District honoree.

BATCHO PUTS UP 38

Daniel Batcho was unstoppable on Nov. 18 against Mississippi College, scoring a career-high 38 points versus the Choctaws. He became just the 11th Bulldog in program history to score 38+ points in a single game and was the most points scored by a Bulldog since 2016.

He made 13 of his 14 field goal attempts (the 92.9 shooting percentage tied for the third best in CUSA history). He also made 11 of his 12 free throw attmepts. The redshirt senior was so hot that he even sank his first ever three-pointer as a Bulldog.

NEWMAN JR. NAMED MVP

Sean Newman Jr. was named MVP of the first Icons of the Game event between LA Tech and UMass.

The point guard registered a double-double in the game with a season-high 14 points and 12 assists in the 76-66 win over the Minutemen.

BATCHO CLAIMS CUSA POW (x2)

Daniel Batcho has claimed two Conference USA Player of the Week honors this season.

He helped LA Tech go 2-0 in week one, averaging 21.5 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks per game in wins over LSU-Alexandria and UT Arlington. He shot 83.3 percent from the field, making 15 of his 18 field goal attempts. Then in week three, Batcho recorded his second weekly honor after helping the Bulldogs go undefeated at the Gulf Coast Showcase, averaging 17.5 points in four games over six days.

BULLDOGS RELOAD

LA Tech brought in seven newcomers in 202324, a revamped roster that led to 22 wins and a second-place finish in CUSA. The Bulldogs will have a similar situation for 2024-25 with the addition of seven newcomers again -- five transfers and two freshman.

NEXT STAR FROM PORT ARTHUR?

Bulldog fans are very familiar with Port Arthur, Texas. The city that sits 90 miles east of Houston is the hometown of Bulldog great Kenneth Lofton Jr. who spent two seasons in Ruston terrorizing opponents before spending the last two seasons in the NBA.

LA Tech may have its next Bulldog great from Port Arthur in the form of Amaree Abram (Lofton Jr. and Abram were teammates at one point at Port Arthur Memorial High School).

Abram was a top-100 recruit coming out of high school and has spent one season apiece at Ole Miss and Georgia Tech before now finding himself at LA Tech.

BUSY NOVEMBER

It was a busy November for the Bulldogs as they played eight games (three at home, four at neutral sites, and one away), which tied the most in program history (went 7-1). The only other time LA Tech played eight games in November was during the 2012-13 season.

OLD, BUT NOT THAT OLD

LA Tech won’t be quite as old as they were in 2023-24 when they had five seniors, all of which were in at least their fifth year of college basketball (had an average age of 21.3).

The Bulldogs will still be a veteran club in 2024-25 though age wise as 10 of the 13 players are upperclassmen (five are in at least their fourth year of college basketball). Will Allen is the oldest of the bunch at 24 years of age.

FIRST EVER NO. 7

In the summer of 2023, the NCAA ratified a number of rule changes, one of which allowed players for the first time to wear any number between 0 and 99.

For decades, the NCAA had restricted two-digit jersey numbers beginning with 6, 7, 8, or 9. So for the first time ever, fans will see a Bulldog wearing No. 7 that will be worn by freshman guard Landren Blocker.

QUEST FOR 1,500 WINS

LA Tech joined the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1925, thus beginning its start of having a men’s basketball program.

Over the last 97 seasons (basketball was discontinued 1942-44 due to World War II), records show that the Bulldogs have amassed 1,490 victories.

LA Tech is in need of 10 more wins to reach the miletone of 1,500 (as of Feb. 1, 2025).

ATTITUDE AND EFFORT CONT’D

Under head coach Talvin Hester, LA Tech has adopted the phrase “Attitude and Effort.” In large part, that saying applies to defense.

Last season, the Bulldogs ranked seventh in the country in field goal percentage defense, allowing opponents to shoot just 39.1 percent from the field which was the lowest in program history since the 1957-58 season. They held 20 of their 32 opponents to under 40 percent shooting, which tied for the third most in the nation.

The Bulldogs also ranked 16th in the country last season in scoring defense, holding their opponents to 64.5 points per game.

HAVING TO REPLACE ISAIAH

Isaiah Crawford spent the last five years at Louisiana Tech, including two seasons that were cut short due to season-ending knee injuries.

Despite that, Crawford etched his name into the record books as one of the greatest Bulldogs in program history. He finished his career as a three-time All-CUSA selection and capped it off in 2023-24 by being voted CUSA Player of the Year and CUSA Defensive Player of the Year (only the third player in league history to garner both awards in the same season).

Crawford could have taken a medical redshirt and returned for a sixth season at LA Tech, but the chose to pursue his professional career and is now with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings.

In total, the Bulldogs lost 61 percent of their scoring from last year’s team, primarily due to the departure of Crawford as well as Third Team All-CUSA guard Tahlik Chavez. The two graduates combined to average 30.2 points per game.

That marked the 10th time in the last 12 seasons and 29th time over the course of the program’s history that the Bulldogs won 20+ games.

WHERE THE 3S COMING FROM?

The three ball plays such a critical role in college basketball. Of the 229 made triples last season, 163 of those were made by Bulldogs who are not on the 2024-25 roster.

Tahlik Chavez, a 5th-year senior last season, was the primary sharpshooter making 80 three-pointers, tied for the fifth most in a single season in program history.

So where will the three-pointers come from this season?

Amaree Abram will be one of the options. As a freshman at Ole Miss, he finished second on the team with 39 made threes while shooting a team-best 36.4 percent from deep.

Another option will be Al Green who shot 40 percent from beyond the arc in his two seasons at San Diego City College, combining for 93 made triples.

1,000 POINT-CLUB GROWS

The 1,000-point club has grown exponentionally over the last decade at LA Tech.

A total of 34 Bulldogs reached the milestone from the program’s first member, George Latham in 1950, all the way until 2013. Over the last 10 years, there have been 11 new additions to the club and at least one almost every season.

If Daniel Batcho keeps up his scoring average, he will become the 46th member of the 1,000-point club at LA Tech.

After the Bulldogs extended their winning streak to five to start the season with an 8579 overtime win over Southern Illinois on Nov. 25, 2024, it meant they have now registered at least a 5-game winning streak in every season going back to 2009.

NEW ERA OF CONFERENCE USA

On July 1, 2023, Conference USA welcomed in four new members to the league -- Sam Houston, Jacksonville State, Liberty, and New Mexico State. CUSA grew again On July 1, 2024 as Kennesaw State officially joined.

There have now been 33 members in CUSA since the league was formed back in 1995. UTEP is currently the longest member, going into its 20th season. Behind them is Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, and FIU who all joined in 2013 and are getting ready to take part in their 12th season. WKU enters its 11th season as a league member.

More new conference members are slated to join the league in the future as Delaware and Missouri State will join in 2025-26.

The Bulldogs victory over Southern Miss on Jan. 13, 2022 turned out to be their 100th CUSA victory. It took them only 145 games to get there, the second fastest of any team in league history behind only Cincinnati.

ABOUT FIU

FIU snapped a seven-game losing streak with an 85-82 overtime victory against Sam Houston at home on Thursday. The Panthers withstood 11 three-pointers by the Bearkats while overcoming a 10-point deficit to force the extra frame where they maintained the lead the entire five minutes.

The Panthers had struggled in close games in conference play this season. Six of their eight league losses have been by eight points or less.

PANTHER OFFENSE

Despite being in ninth in the league standings, FIU has had the third-best shooting percentage in league play at 44.6 percent.

And while they have not been a heavy threepoint shooting team this season, the Panthers did make eight triples against Sam Houston which was one shy of tying their season high.

LED BY THEIR DEFENSE

Defense is where FIU likes to create chaos. The Panthers rank top 35 in the country in both steals per game (9.3) and blocks per game (4.8). They have recorded 27 steals over their last two games while forcing 43 turnovers.

In league play, they rank first in the conference in rebounding defense (30.00) and own a +4.89 rebounding margin.

TOP PANTHER

Jayden Brewer has emerged as the top scorer for the Panthers, averaging 14.9 points per game. He has been really good over the last four games, averaging 19.8 points while shooting 53.7 percent from the field.

HISTORY WITH FIU

LA Tech and FIU were league foes in the Sun Belt Conference for three seasons (1998-01) before becoming league opponents again in 2013 when the two programs joined Conference USA.

Since becoming CUSA foes, LA Tech holds an 11-5 advantage. Winning in Miami though has been a challenge for the Bulldogs during this time where they have a 2-5 record. The last one was the biggest of them all, winning 9353 last season.

RUSTON – Louisiana Tech opened the game on a 25-4 run and never looked back, claiming its first Conference USA win of the season in an 81-64 victory over FIU inside the Thomas Assembly Center on Karl Malone Court.

After two disappointing losses to start league play, LA Tech led wire-to-wire in its home win over an FIU team who had won five of its last seven games.

The first half was the story. The Bulldogs shot a blistering 70.0 percent from the field, knocking down their first seven three-point attempts in the process. Meanwhile defensively, they limited the Panthers to just 34.6 percent shooting to help build a 50-27 halftime advantage.

Al Green was the offensive spark, draining five straight triples in the first 13 minutes of action. Six straight points by Kaden Cooper, including two alley-oop slams, helped give the ‘Dogs their largest lead of the contest at 42-14 with 5:49 to play in the first stanza.

The second half was much different. The three-pointers were not falling and the offense was not as crisp for LA Tech. On the other end, the Panthers found some success by getting to the paint and the free throw line.

Even so, the outcome was never really in doubt. FIU did go on a late 15-4 run to slice its deficit down to 15 with four minutes to play. However, the Panthers managed just two more points the rest of the way.

Green scored 18 of his season-high 21 points in the first half. Cooper, who also had a big first half with 13 points, ended with 19 to go along with a game-high eight boards. Daniel Batcho was the third Bulldog in double figures with 16 points.

Doing most of the dishing was Sean Newman Jr. who finished with 13 assists and just two turnovers against the pesky FIU defense. The point guard added four points and four steals as LA Tech shot 58.2 percent from the field, its ninth game shooting over 50 percent.

Three Panthers – Jonathan Aybar (15), Jayden Brewer (15), and Travis Gray (11) – scored double-digit points as FIU shot 43.5 percent from the field. The Panthers made the same amount of free throws (20) as they did field goals (20).
