2017 SOCCER MEDIA GUIDE

SOCCER COMPLEX The Lady Techster Soccer Complex begins its ninth season of existence in 2017 as the home field for the Louisiana Tech women’s soccer team. Located on Alabama Ave., the Lady Techster Soccer Complex features a press box, permanent bleachers, sound system, scoreboard and mounted stadium lights. Starting in late February of 2013, preparation for the installment of lights at the complex began with power lines being put in place under the soccer field to connect to the main power source. Foundations were then started in early March with the concrete needing to sit for at least 30 days. The light poles were delivered and the main frames were connected before the 1500 watt bulbs were attached and angled properly. The four poles were mounted onto the foundations and connected to the power source. Most recently, the field itself received an upgrade with a new drainage system and constructed façade retaining wall as well as a new sprinkler system. In eight seasons, the Lady Techsters have posted a tremendous 53-18-4 record at their friendly confines, posting five unbeaten nonconference seasons in route to a dominant 34-4-2 mark. Since joining Conference USA in 2013, the team has a conference record of 14-6. The facility has seen several historical moments in Louisiana Tech soccer, starting with the 2009 home opener as LA Tech defeated Lamar 3-2 in double overtime for its first win at the complex. On Oct. 23, 2009, Kiva Gresham’s extra-frame gave LA Tech a 2-1 win over New Mexico State for their first-ever conference win. On Oct. 15, 2010 against 2009 WAC champion San Jose State, Lady Techsters came back from a two-goal halftime deficit to win 5-4 in overtime. The fourth notable match came on Oct. 5, 2012 when LA Tech stunned nationally-ranked Denver in a 1-1 tie. The fifth moment came in the regular season finale in 2014 with 1-0 overtime victory to clinch the team’s first ever appearance in the Conference USA Tournament. A similar moment came in the regular season finale in 2015 as the Techsters shutout conference regular season champion North Texas to qualify for the league tourney for the third time in the last four years. The complex also played host to the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Lady Techsters’ previous home was Joe Aillet Stadium, home to the Bulldog football team, where they posted an 11-12-4 record over the program’s previous four years (2005-08). The facility will forever be remembered as the place where the soccer program earned its inaugural victory, a 2-0 shutout of Mississippi Valley State on Aug. 28, 2005. LA Tech’s Katy Garrison scored the first goal in the stadium on an assist by Sarah Chovanec. During the program’s inaugural season in 2004, the team played all of their home games on the intramural soccer field across from the Lambright Intramural Center.

LAST SEASON IN REVIEW SOCCER STARTS 2016 SEASON WITH DRAMATIC WIN (AUG. 21) The last time Louisiana Tech was forced to play a man down due to a red card, it was four years ago and the Lady Techsters were still able to pull off the victory. The same scenario happened as LA Tech was forced to play with 10 on the field and still came away with a dramatic 2-1 road win over Lamar at the LU Soccer Complex to open the 2016 season. The match was knotted up at one goal apiece before Monica Gebler was issued a red card just 35 minutes into the game. Forced to play defensive, the Techsters found an offensive opportunity almost 15 minutes into the second half when freshman Jenna Dages came up with the game winner on her first career goal.

DAGES HAMMERS HOME GOLDEN GOAL IN DOUBLE OT (SEPT. 4) It looked like Louisiana Tech was going to win the match over Tennessee Tech in regulation, but the Golden Eagles were able to find the equalizer just minutes before stoppage. Then it looked as though the two teams were going to settle for the draw, but freshman Jenna Dages had other plans as the forward ripped a shot for the golden goal with only 50 seconds left to give the Lady Techsters a 2-1 road victory on Sunday afternoon at the Tech Soccer Field.

SHERRY, SLOAN REACH MILESTONES IN SHORTENED VICTORY (SEPT. 11) It did not turn into a four-hour weather delay like the Louisiana Tech football game, but the soccer team endured a one-hour delay due to lightning before the match was called 74 minutes in. LA Tech had the upperhand at that point, extending their unbeaten streak to seven with the 2-1 victory over Nicholls State at the Nicholls Soccer Complex. It was a historic victory as well with head coach Kevin Sherry picking up his 100th win at the helm of the program. Also reaching a milestone was senior forward Kathryn Sloan who netted the first goal of the match to give her 77 career points, a new program record.

LA TECH CONTINUES ROAD MAGIC WITH LEAGUE VICTORY (SEPT. 18) The Louisiana Tech soccer team had never scored a single goal in the three times it had played at Southern Miss. That changed in the fourth meeting as the Lady Techsters took advantage of an early red card on the Golden Eagles to notch a 3-0 league victory at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex. With the win, LA Tech extended its unbeaten streak to nine, its winning streak to seven and its record-breaking road winning streak to six.

SOCCER CONTINUES SERVICE WITH LOCAL ORGANIZATION (SEPT. 23) Community service has a special place in the hearts of the Louisiana Tech soccer team, especially when it comes to the local non-profit organization 4 Paws Rescue, Inc. The relationship between the program and 4 Paws goes all the way back to 2013 when the team dedicated their time in the preseason to the well-being of stray, abandoned and neglected dogs in Lincoln Parish. This past February, the Lady Techsters hosted a 24-hour soccer event to help raise money for a dog named Luna. Enough money was raised to provide Luna with the care that she needed. The team provided their services again by doing a number of projects at the facility, including organizing the shed, raking and hauling pine straw, cleaning debris and covering holes dug by the furry animals.

LA TECH EARNS NSCAA TEAM ACADEMIC AWARD (OCT. 10) For the ninth consecutive year, the Louisiana Tech soccer team was recognized by the NSCAA for earning the College Team Academic Award for the 2015-16 academic year. LA Tech, under the direction of head coach Kevin Sherry who is in his 10th season at the helm, ended up being one of 578 women’s collegiate soccer teams which qualified for the award, given to those who have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the entire academic year.

GOLDEN GOAL SENDS LA TECH TO C-USA TOURNAMENT (OCT. 23) In the final home match of the 2016 season at the Lady Techster Soccer Complex, Louisiana Tech had a golden opportunity to qualify for the Conference USA Tournament for a third straight year. That golden opportunity came in the form of a golden goal by senior Kathryn Sloan who netted the game-winner with only 69 seconds left in the second overtime period. LA Tech had a 1-0 advantage and was playing a man up with 15 minutes to go in the second period, but UAB was able to connect with an equalizer that ultimately sent the match into OT. However, Sloan refused to end her playing career at her home pitch, scoring her team-leading eighth goal of the year and fulfilling the promise she made at the beginning of the season of proving the preseason polls yet again and advancing to the league tourney in Charlotte.

THREE LADY TECHSTERS EARN C-USA HONORS (NOV. 1) After helping Louisiana Tech to a 14-win regular season and its third straight postseason tournament, Kathryn Sloan, Nomvula Kgoale and Jaelyn Peeples were selected to the All-Conference USA team as voted on by the 14 league head coaches. After earning second team honors for the last two seasons, Sloan became the first player in program history to be named First Team All-Conference USA. Kgoale and Peeples were recognized for their immediate impacts on the pitch in being selected to the second team and all-freshman team, respectively.

SLOAN SELECTED AS ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICA OF THE YEAR (NOV. 22) Louisiana Tech senior forward Kathryn Sloan has received numerous awards during her stellar four-year career on the soccer field and in the classroom, but the honor she received onTuesday trumps them all. In an announcement made by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), Sloan was selected as the 2016 Academic All-America of the Year for Division I Women’s Soccer. A communication arts and design major with a perfect 4.0 grade point average, Sloan becomes the first student-athlete in LA Tech history to receive this prestigious honor. She was a third team CoSIDA Academic All-America selection last year.

SLOAN, KGOALE EARN NSCAA ALL-REGION HONORS (DEC. 2) After being selected to the All-Conference USA Team, Louisiana Tech’s Kathryn Sloan and Nomvula Kgoale added to their hardware by being named to the 2016 NCAA Division I All-Central Region Team, announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Sloan and Kgoale were two of 15 players from C-USA to be named All-Central Region, both making the second team after leading the Lady Techsters to a 14-win season and a third straight appearance in the conference tournament despite being picked 11th in the preseason. This is the second time Sloan has been honored with this award after ending her stellar career as LA Tech’s all-time career leader in points, goals and shots.

SHERRY, SLOAN RECEIVE TOP LSWA HONORS (DEC. 11) For the second time in the last three years, Louisiana Tech women’s soccer claimed two top Louisiana Sports Writers Association honors as the LSWA announced that head coach Kevin Sherry was named Co-Coach of the Year and senior forward Kathryn Sloan was named Player of the Year. Also receiving honors was junior defender Nomvula Kgoale who earned honorable mention honors. Coach Sherry and Sloan took home these same awards in 2014. For coach Sherry, it marks the third time he has been named the Louisiana Coach of the Year as the 10-year leader of the Lady Techsters guided the team to a 14-6-1 overall record.

K I VA

GRESHAM Assistant Coach

Former Lady Techster great Kiva Gresham begins her sixth year with the soccer program after returning to Ruston as an assistant coach for Kevin Sherry midway through the 2012 season. Gresham’s main responsibility is assisting with the development of the midfielders and strikers while also teaming with fellow assistant Josh Wagenaar in overseeing fitness and conditioning for the squad. This past season, Gresham was instrumental in coaching striker Kathryn Sloan who became the first Lady Techster in program history to be named First Team All-Conference USA. Not only was she one of only three forwards selected first team, she was also named the Louisiana Player of the Year for the second time in her career as she finished her career as the all-time leader in career points, goals and shots. During her playing career, Gresham was a star forward for four years (2007-10) at LA Tech. She still holds the single season record for most points (32) and is tied for most assists (eight). She also ranks in the top three in career goals (27), assists (20) and points (74). Head coach Kevin Sherry is quick to call Gresham the best soccer player to ever play at LA Tech since its inception in 2004. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Gresham has taken her love for the international sport and gone to the Caribbean where she participated in a coaching class in Trinidad and Tobago. Gresham was also selected as one of the lead instructors for the EXACT Soccer Elite Prospect Camp. This unique college soccer camp provided players with the opportunity to showcase individual field skills and their mental readiness. Gresham joined other top instructors from NCAA programs such as North Carolina, Stephen F. Austin, Abilene Christian, Illinois, Dallas Baptist, Schreiner, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M Corpus Christi, Texas-Brownsville and St. Mary’s (Texas).

CHARITY

SIMMONS Assistant Coach

After spending the last four years as a player on the back line for Louisiana Tech, Charity Simmons will now be on the sideline as an assistant coach. Women’s soccer head coach Kevin Sherry made the announcement. Simmons joins Sherry and Kiva Gresham while Josh Wagenaar will remain on staff as a volunteer assistant. Simmons saw action in 73 games from 2013-16, including 55 starts, as a defender in helping the program to a 48-30-6 record and qualifying for three conference tournaments. She quickly made an impact for the Lady Techsters as a freshman, starting in 19 games and playing the most minutes of any player. She scored the lone goal of her career that season in conference action against UTEP while helping a back line register nine shutouts. She went on to be chosen as the Team Co-Defensive Player of the Year. As a sophomore, she made 12 starts at wing back prior to suffering a season-ending injury. The Watson, Louisiana recovered in time for the 2015 season where she played in 19 games and recorded her first career assist. This past season as a senior, Simmons helped LA Tech to a 14-61 record, the second most wins in program history. The team finished with a program-best six league victories en route to a fifth-place finish in Conference USA. The Lady Techsters also set a school record with six consecutive road wins.

JOSH

WAGENAAR

Volunteer Assistant Coach

Josh Wagenaar enters his fifth season as a member of the Louisiana Tech soccer coaching staff. A former standout goalkeeper in Canada, Wagenaar has been instrumental in coaching keepers Kylee Seto and Caitlin Updyke in net the past four years. In her three full seasons as the starting goalkeeper, Seto has twice earned All-Louisiana honorable mention. Her eight shutouts in 2015 tied the school history for most in a single season while her 11 victories tied for the second most. This past fall, she posted a 10-5 record in goal with six shutouts. She finished her career as the all-time leader in save percentage (.824) as well as finishing second in school history in career saves (238), wins (33) and shutouts (24). Seto took over for Updyke who was a second team All-Conference USA keeper in 2013 when she registered four shutouts against league foes with her best effort coming against C-USA champion Colorado College when she held the potent Tigers scoreless for 102 minutes while tallying a career-high 12 saves. Prior to joining the Lady Techster coaching staff, Wagenaar served for three years as the men’s and women’s goalkeeper coach at Graceland University. While with the Jackets, he coached the women to three consecutive Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Championships and National Tournament appearances while also developing the strength and conditioning programs. Under his tutelage, the Lady Jacket’s goalkeeper Stefany Cardozo garnered multiple honors including two conference defensive MVP awards, two first-team All-HAAC awards and was recently named the 2012 HAAC Player of the Year. As a player, he participated at all levels of soccer throughout his career. Wagenaar spent three seasons at Hartwick College where he was named Atlantic Soccer Conference Goalkeeper of the Week 11 different times. After playing for the Canadian National team in the divisions of U16, U17, U18 and U19, Wagenaar was named to the U20 team where he represented his country in two FIFA World Youth Championships. He then pursued a professional career overseas in Europe where he played for ADO Den Haag (The Netherlands), Lyngby BK (Denmark), Yeovil Town F.C. (England) and Falkirk F.C. (Scotland) during which time he was also a member of the U23 and full senior men’s Canadian National teams. Wagenaar earned a degree in Business Administration in May of 2012 from Graceland University and possesses an NSCAA National Coaching diploma and NSCAA Level III Goalkeeping diploma.

CONFERENCE USA 2017-18

Conference USA begins its 23rd year in 2017-18 as it continues to compete and promote the success of its student-athletes. The league has adapted to the everchanging landscape of collegiate athletics over its first two-plus decades, but the commitment to excellence, integrity, leadership and its student athletes in competition, academics and community is unwavering. Conference USA enjoys a far-reaching fan base with its 14 members: Charlotte, FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Marshall, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion, Rice, Southern Miss, UAB, UTEP, UTSA and WKU. Debuting in 1995, Conference USA teams have combined for 100 bowl appearances in football, 106 NCAA Tournament appearances in basketball, including three Final Fours, 69 NCAA baseball appearances including six College World Series berths, 89 NCAA soccer tournament appearances including four trips to the College Cup, and 39 individual national champions in track and field and cross country. Success is not limited to athletic achievement, however, as 220 Conference USA student-athletes have garnered Academic All-America honors, 749 have achieved academic all-district laurels and thousands of student-athletes have earned a college degree. Conference USA sponsors competition in 19 sports – nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field) and 10 for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball). C-USA annually awards postgraduate scholarships, along with the Sport Academic Awards, Scholar-Athletes of the Year and the Institutional Academic Excellence Award. The league’s charter members were Charlotte, Cincinnati, DePaul, Houston, Louisville, Marquette, Memphis, Saint Louis, Southern Miss, Tulane, UAB and USF. Eleven of the institutions began athletic participation in 1995, while Houston joined competition in the fall of 1996. The league’s headquarters were established in Chicago and, after nine years, relocated to the current office in Irving, Texas. Britton Banowsky was named Commissioner in October 2002, succeeding Mike Slive, the league’s first Commissioner. In October 2015, Judy MacLeod became the league’s third Commissioner. C-USA added East Carolina (September, 1996) and the United States Military Academy (March, 1997) as football members. USF started C-USA football in 2003. Marshall, Rice, SMU, Tulsa, UCF and UTEP became full-time Conference USA members for all sports in 2005. In 2013, charter member Charlotte returned to CUSA and was joined by new members FIU, Florida Atlantic, Louisiana Tech, Middle Tennessee, North Texas, Old Dominion and UTSA. DR. LES

GUICE

University President @LKGuice

Louisiana Tech University and President Les Guice share a rich history together that spans five decades and has produced family ties that are deeply rooted in a passion for the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters. From an architecture student stepping on the campus for the first time in 1972 to an appointment as Louisiana Tech’s 14th President in 2013, Dr. Guice has shown an unwavering commitment to leadership and service to his alma mater. One of Dr. Guice’s first achievements at Louisiana Tech was earning a bachelor of arts in architecture in 1976. Discovering a passion for engineering under the mentorship of Professor Jack Painter, Dr. Guice went on to earn a master’s degree in civil engineering from Tech in 1978. While working on his master’s degree, Dr. Guice also discovered a passion for teaching and education as a profession. Dr. Guice accepted a position as an assistant professor of civil engineering at Louisiana Tech in 1978 and was promoted to associate professor in 1981. A few short years after earning his Ph.D. in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1986, Dr. Guice was named the interim department head of civil engineering in Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering in 1988 and earned the permanent department head position and full professorship in 1989. As department head, Dr. Guice initiated the formation of the Civil Engineering Advisory Board and the Civil Engineering Distinguished Alumni recognition program, both of which significantly enhanced alumni participation and significantly enhanced fund-raising for the department. Throughout the next decade, Dr. Guice would continue to distinguish himself as an academician, researcher, administrator and leader. His dedication to his students, his faculty and the university would lead to his appointment as Dean of Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science (COES) in 1999. As Dean, Dr. Guice continued to encourage and support innovations in the curricula. The College’s faculty became increasingly successful in securing external funding for the integrated curriculum which resulted in a transformative redesign of curricula throughout the College. Dr. Guice’s leadership and vision also reinvigorated the Engineering and Science Foundation to more effectively serve the needs of the College. He initiated a new integrated strategic plan, known as “COES 2010,” and capital campaign, “Tech’s BEST,” that led advancement of the college and to funding for an Eminent Scholar Chair, 15 Professorships, $500k Scholarship Fund, and several new laboratories and facilities. Dr. Guice leadership also helped to guide the Institute for Micromanufacturing (IfM) toward a focus on the emerging field of nanotechnology. With the hiring of key nanotechnology faculty in numerous disciplines, further expansion of research laboratories, establishment of an interdisciplinary engineering PhD program with a nanotechnology track, and initiation of a B.S. in Nanosystems Engineering, the IfM and COES established strong research and education nanotechnology programs that have received national recognition. In 2004, Dr. Guice’s performance and accomplishments as dean of the College of Engineering and Science led to his appointment as Louisiana Tech’s vice president for research and development. During his tenure as vice president and as executive vice president in 2012, Louisiana Tech has significantly increased patents, licenses/options, start-up companies, SBIR grants with affiliated companies, and has established strong industry partnerships for commercialization of technologies. Dr. Guice also led the establishment of Louisiana Tech’s first two technology incubators, the Rawle and Humana Enterprise Centers. With a focus on the future and a progressive vision for economic development, Dr. Guice has led the planning and development of the Louisiana Tech Enterprise Campus – a research park connecting the university and downtown Ruston. Enterprise Campus’ first building, Tech Pointe, was completed in 2012 and is now home for several companies and organizations, including an Air Force funded Cyberspace Research Laboratory. With the recent completion of Louisiana Tech’s new College of Business building and renovation to University Hall as a home for interdisciplinary entrepreneurship and innovation activities, the first phase of Enterprise Campus is

nearing completion. Dr. Guice’s reputation for exemplary leadership has not been bound by the campus or the region. Roles in statewide leadership have included election to serve as the founding Chair for the Louisiana Optical Network Initiative (LONI) Management Council, serving as Chair of the Louisiana EPSCoR Committee, and leading the development of a state-wide science and technology plan, called FIRST Louisiana. Dr. Guice currently serves as Chair of the Board of Regents Master Plan Research Advisory Council and as chair of the Louisiana Innovation Council. Among the many awards and recognitions Dr. Guice has earned during his career is the Robert E. Russ Award from the Ruston/Lincoln Parish Chamber of Commerce (2009), Outstanding Civil Engineer from the ASCE Louisiana Section (2008), Louisiana Tech University Civil Engineering Distinguished Alumnus (2007), Louisiana Engineering Society’s James M. Todd Technological Accomplishment Award (2007), Governor’s University Technology Leader of the Year Award (2006), and Louisiana Engineering Society A.B. Patterson Medal for an Engineer in Management (2004.) On December 4, 2012, during a special session of the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors, Dr. Guice was unanimously voted to serve as the 14th President of Louisiana Tech University. Dr. Guice officially took over as President on July 1, 2013. As President of Louisiana Tech, Dr. Guice is the chief executive officer of north Louisiana’s only Carnegie Foundation national research university and one of only two public universities from Louisiana recognized in the top tier of national universities by U.S. News and World Report. Dr. Guice leads a university that most recently has been ranked #11 in the nation in a list of “Most Underrated Colleges In America” (Business Insider), #17 in the nation in a list of “Low Cost Colleges with High Starting Salaries for Graduates” (Affordable Colleges Online), and #21 in the nation for providing its graduates with the best returns on their investments (AdvisorOne.) Throughout his career, Dr. Guice has contributed to and played a central role in creating the culture and vision for the future of Louisiana Tech, and continues that commitment as President. Dr. Guice’s focus on campus-wide engagement, building and growing relationships, and leadership in forging a path toward advancement of the university’s academic and athletic programs, research and commercialization activities, and economic development efforts means that Louisiana Tech University’s best days are yet to come. Dr. Guice is a native of Monroe and grew up in Bastrop. He and his wife, Kathy, have three sons – Kyle, Chad, and Bret – one grandson, Christopher, and twin granddaughters, Elizabeth and Everly.

TOMMY

McCLELLAND Director of Athletics @TMcClelland

Since stepping on campus in July of 2013, the cornerstone of Louisiana Tech Director of Athletics Tommy McClelland’s leadership has been the philosophy of building champions on the playing fields, in the classrooms and in life. While leading Louisiana Tech into the Conference USA era, McClelland impacted the athletics department through fundraising, facility improvements, coaching hires and overall student-athlete development. If 2015-16 is any indication, McClelland’s philosophy is paying dividends in Ruston. During McClelland’s third year sitting in the AD chair in Ruston, the University’s student-athletes combined to record one of the most successful years in recent history. “What a great job by our coaches, our student-athletes and our support staff this past year,” said McClelland. “It was truly a memorable year in so many ways. We preach building champions on the field, in the classroom and in life, and I truly believe we had more than our share of all of those during the past 12 months. “I think this year was one we can build upon. We never want to be satisfied, and we are always striving for even greater things. That’s our philosophy. However, when we look back at the past year, we know that a lot of blood and sweat and tears went into the successes that Louisiana Tech and its student-athletes had on the playing fields and in the classroom.” How impressive was 2015-16? Louisiana Tech joined Florida, Florida State, Ohio State and Ole Miss as the only five Football Bowl Subdivision schools to recorded 9-plus wins in football, 20-plus wins in men’s basketball and 40-plus wins in baseball. That’s pretty elite company. It was also one of only 12 FBS programs to play in the postseason in each of those three sports, joining Florida, Connecticut, Florida State, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Ohio State, Washington, Duke, Arizona, Utah and Miami (Fla.). Not a bad crowd in which to be included. The impressive year started in late August when the brand new $23 million Davison Athletics Complex – which encloses the south end of Joe Aillet Stadium – opened and the second largest crowd in Tech football history watched the Bulldogs defeat Southern in the season opener. It was just the beginning of a great season for head coach Skip Holtz and the Bulldogs, who defeated Sun Belt Conference champion Arkansas State 47-28 in the R&L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. It was the first back-toback bowl victories by LA Tech in program history (Tech defeated Illinois in the 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl). The year culminated in June when the Bulldog baseball team – which was picked 11th in the preseason C-USA Coaches Poll – earned its first ever at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, winning a pair of games in Starkville while advancing to the regional championship game against Mississippi State. The Diamond Dogs posted 10 wins over Top 25 teams, including a three-game conference sweep of the Rice Owls. Tech earned the program’s first ever at-large berth and its first regional appearance since 1987, defeating 4-time NCAA champion Cal State Fullerton. Tech’s 42 wins were the sixth most in program history and the most since 1988. It was a truly memorable year on the playing fields, including: The Bulldog golf team shocked everyone in route to capturing the Conference USA team title (its first since 1980) and clinching the program’s first ever appearance in the NCAA Regionals. The Lady Techster tennis team recorded the program’s first win over a nationally ranked team (defeated No. 45 Georgia State) while also earning its first ever national ranking. Chad Camper was named the LSWA State Coach of the Year for the second time in three seasons. The Lady Techster soccer team qualified for the C-USA Tournament for the third time in four years and recorded the program’s 100th win. Katie Sloan also became the 17th student-athlete in LA Tech history to earn Academic All-American honors. The Lady Techster softball team recorded a 32-win season, its first back-to-back 30-plus win seasons since the late 1990s. Tech won five straight league series for the first time in program history and fell just percentage points shy of winning the West Division. Tech also drew a program

home record 1,927 fans against LSU. The Bulldog basketball team won 23 games, eight of those coming against teams that participated in the postseason, including Ohio State and Florida Gulf Coast. Tech advanced to its fourth straight postseason tournament, while senior guard Alex Hamilton was named the Conference USA Player of the Year and honorable mention AP All-American. The LA Tech track and field teams also had some impressive individual performances as Jermey Hicks earned second team all-American honors in the indoor 60-meters, advancing to the NCAA Indoor Championships. Adams represented the University in the NCAA Outdoor Championships, competing in the long jump in Eugene. Off the playing field, the LA Tech Athletics Department had a stellar year as well. Seventy-five student-athletes earned their bachelor’s or master’s degrees while 151 made the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll and 27 received the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal. Tech’s student-athletes recorded a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 83 percent and a Federal Graduation Rate (FGR) of 62 percent, with both being record highs for the University. Louisiana Tech’s 83 percent graduation success rate ranks as the second highest in the state among Division I football-playing public institutions, trailing only LSU by one point (84). Louisiana Tech also made the announcement in the fall that it partnered with adidas America, Inc. to establish a transformational 5-year exclusive agreement that will outfit all 16 NCAA men’s and women’s programs in adidas uniforms, apparel, footwear and equipment through the 2020-2021 athletics season. Tech alumni and fans also continued to buy in to the vision for the athletic department as the Louisiana Tech Athletics Club (LTAC) set an all-time high in total LTAC giving and most total LTAC donors. 2015-16 was truly amazing. Shortly after his hiring in 2013, McClelland re-energized the LA Tech fan-base when he joined President Guice in an October press conference revealing the updated plans for the Davison Athletics Complex located in the south endzone of Joe Aillet Stadium - the centerpiece of the University’s Quest for Excellence capital campaign. McClelland completed the fundraising needed for the project, and the new facility opened in August of 2015. It generates an additional $500,000 annually in revenue. Another marquee addition to the Louisiana Tech athletic facilities during McClelland’s tenure is the $1.2 million Paul Millsap Vision presented by Community Trust Bank, a high definition video display board in the Thomas Assembly Center. The project also included a customized sound system for the Thomas Assembly Center and a video board control room, which will be utilized for both football and basketball. These two major facility improvements and additional smaller scale projects were made possible through a pair of record-setting years in fundraising. During the 2013-14 fiscal year, McClelland spearheaded the efforts in raising more than $10.8 million through both LTAC and Quest for Excellence; more than double any previous year in Tech Athletics history. Included in the record total were five, seven-figure gifts. The 2014-15 fiscal year saw record totals in Louisiana Tech Athletic Club (LTAC) unrestricted donations -- both in dollar figures and in total number of donors. It also included increases in ticket sales in football, men’s and

women’s basketball. Tech had plenty of success stories on the playing fields during those first two years, led by the Bulldog basketball team winning back-to-back Conference USA regular season titles and advancing into the NIT with impressive road wins over SEC foe Georgia (2014) and Texas A&M (2015). The Dunkin’ Dawgs tied the program single season wins record (29) in 2014 and totaled 56 wins during the two year span. On the gridiron, the Bulldog football team captured the Conference USA West Division title in 2014, recording a 9-5 overall record and barely falling to Marshall in the C-USA title game. Tech earned an invitation to the Heart of Dallas Bowl and promptly defeated Big 10 foe Illinois 35-18. Tech sophomore Victor Lange became the first Bulldog golfer ever to earn an NCAA Regional appearance, competing in the San Antonio Region in 2014 and Lubbock Region in 2015. He also hired one of the rising stars in college baseball in Greg Goff, a 21-year coaching veteran. In just two seasons in Ruston, Goff led the program to this year’s NCAA Regionals before being hired by SEC member Alabama. Prior to coming to Ruston, McClelland made a national name for himself after quickly elevating to the athletics director position at age 26. He earned high praise from a number of high-profile, experienced athletic administrators. “Tommy McClelland is an outstanding leader and one of the nation’s rising stars in intercollegiate athletics,” said Bubba Cunningham, athletics director at the University of North Carolina. “He has a demonstrated commitment to supporting and developing his coaches and student-athletes and has already become well-known among ADs for his leadership, vision and character. Tommy has also shown a dedication to lifelong learning and the application of his skills and talents to making his athletic programs better.” Prior to being named athletic director at McNeese State on March 19, 2008, McClelland served as interim athletic director and assistant athletic director of internal affairs at the university. In his time at McNeese, McClelland and his staff had numerous success stories when it came to increased revenue streams and the overall game-day experience in Lake Charles. He raised more than $3 million in private donations, and he was instrumental in increasing corporate sponsorships to nearly $1 million, while securing new clients and multi-year sponsorships. McClelland was also responsible for increasing football season ticket sales: the program eclipsed the 8,000 mark in 2008 with a high of 8,035 in 2009. In addition, he was instrumental in setting single-game attendance records in baseball, volleyball, softball, soccer, women’s basketball and women’s tennis. “Tommy is a rising star in the college athletics administration field and, in my view, the ideal leader to advance Louisiana Tech’s athletics program as it transitions into Conference USA,” said Ian McCaw, former athletics director at Baylor University. “He possesses impeccable integrity and has an extraordinary work ethic. Moreover, his interpersonal and relational skills are outstanding and will enable him to quickly connect with Bulldog fans as well as campus and community leaders.” One of McClelland’s main goals was to improve the life of the studentathletes and increase the game-day experience for the McNeese State fan base. One of the most effective ways to accomplish these goals was by improving the facilities. During his time at McNeese State, he oversaw a combined total of over $11 million dollars in facility renovation and new construction. The combination of increased revenue streams, renovations and new construction, and a highly-involved fan base led to plenty of success stories on the playing fields. During his tenure as athletic director, McNeese won Southland Conference championships in football (2007, 2009), soccer (2006, tournament; 2007, regular season), softball (2010, tournament; 2013, regular season), men’s basketball (2011, regular season), women’s basketball (2011, regular season; 2011 and 2012 tournament) and men’s cross country (2012). The women’s basketball program made its first appearances ever in the NCAA Tournament, and the men’s basketball program hosted the first round of the NIT postseason tournament (Boston College live on ESPNU). Even more impressive is the fact that while the Cowboy and Cowgirl programs were capturing titles on the fields, the University’s student-athletes were making tremendous strides in the classroom. In five of McClelland’s six years as athletics director, McNeese State led the Southland Conference in the number of student-athletes named to the Commissioner’s Honor Roll. In addition, McClelland guided the resurgence in APR success in Lake Charles. The number of athletic programs boasting the required APR score of 925 went from four in his first year to all 16 in his final year. The community service hours performed by the MSU student-athletes also tripled

52

to more than 3,000 during his tenure. “Tommy has a great knowledge of college athletics and excels at helping his student-athletes balance and succeed in their commitments to academics and athletics,” said Warde Manuel, athletics director at the University of Connecticut. “Tommy has also proven his ability to work effectively with coaches and administrators to help his programs be successful.” McClelland earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern State in 2004 and completed his master’s degree in sports administration in 2005. He walked on with the Demons football team and eventually earned a scholarship; he also competed in the javelin for the NSU track and field team. The native of Basile, Louisiana served as a graduate assistant at Northwestern State in athletics and also worked at the Southland Conference office as an administrative intern, assisting with championship events. McClelland is also a 2012 graduate of the Executive Program of the Sports Management Institute and attended instruction at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School and the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business. McClelland is married to the former Jessica Stokes of Garrison, Texas. They have two sons, Lawson (6) and Grayson (5).
