SKIP
HOLTZ HEAD COACH @CoachSHoltz Skip Holtz enters his ninth year as the head coach at Louisiana Tech after former Louisiana Tech University President Dr. Dan Reneau introduced him as the 33rd head football on Dec. 14, 2012. During his tenure, Holtz has built not just a winning program, but a consistent winning program as the Bulldogs have made seven straight bowl appearances, including a streak of six winning seasons and six bowl victories (2014-19). In 2020, Holtz oversaw a season unlike any before as the world was faced with the COVID-19 pandemic. During the season, Tech had four games canceled and one postponed to finish the season with a 5-5 overall mark. Holtz led Louisiana Tech to its seventh straight bowl appearance as the Bulldogs competed in the 2020 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. Holtz guided defensive lineman Milton Williams to be named a third team All-American, while linebacker Tyler Grubbs was named a freshman All-American by three publications. Defensive lineman Eric Kendzior was named a Mayo Clinic Comeback Player of the Year SemiFinalist, while kicker Jacob Barnes was a Lou Groza National Collegiate Place-Kicker Award Semifinalist. In 2019, Holtz guided LA Tech to a 10win season, which marked the first time since 1984 that the program produced double-digit victories. The 10th win came in the 2019 Walk On’s Independence Bowl as the Bulldogs shut out the Miami Hurricanes, 14-0, in Shreveport. It was the first shutout in Independence Bowl history and the only shutout of the 2019 bowl season. With the victory, the Bulldogs became the only team in the nation to win six consecutive bowl games from 2014 to 2019 (tied for fifth longest in FBS history). In 2018, Holtz guided the Bulldogs to an 8-5 overall record and a 31-14 victory over Hawaii in the 2018 SoFi Hawaii Bowl. This was followed by a 2017 season when the team closed out the regular season with two victories to become bowl eligible and then overpowered SMU, 51-10, in the inaugural DXL Frisco Bowl. In 2016, Holtz earned Conference USA Coach of the Year honors after he guided the Bulldogs to yet another highly successful campaign as LA Tech finished the season with a 9-5 overall record, a Conference USA West Division title and a thrilling 48-45 victory over No. 25 Navy in the Lockhead Martin Armed Forces Bowl. It marked the Bulldogs’ first win over a Top 25 team since 2005. The 2016 team had arguably the greatest offensive in school history, producing a programrecord 620 total points and 7,206 total yards. The Bulldogs averaged 44.3 points per game that year, the second most in FBS. Holtz led another potent offensive team in 2015 to a 9-4 record after dismantling Arkansas State, 47-28, in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl. It was in his second season at the helm that the program started its winning streak as Holtz
and the Bulldogs enjoyed a five-win improvement, going 9-5 and taking the C-USA West Division title in the program’s second year as a member of the league. The season was capped off with a 35-18 win over Big Ten opponent Illinois in the Zaxby’s Heart of Dallas Bowl at Cotton Bowl Stadium. In his first season, Holtz inherited a team that lost 35 seniors with seven being invited to NFL camps (two through the NFL Draft) and brought together the team as it entered a new conference (Conference USA) under a new President and new Athletics Director, going 4-8. In his eight years at LA Tech, Holtz has amassed 61 victories as head coach which is the third most in program history and he is one win shy of his 150th career victory as a head coach. He has had 13 players selected in the NFL Draft, the most in C-USA. Among them are defensive tackle Vernon Butler who was selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft by the Carolina Panthers with the 30th overall selection as well as defensive tackle Milton Williams who was selected with the 73rd overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Holtz has coached seven All-Americans and 57 All-Conference USA selections (first or second team) while having eight players garner specialty awards -- Cody Sokol (2014 C-USA Newcomer of the Year), Jeff Driskel (2015 C-USA Newcomer of the Year), Ryan Higgins (2016 C-USA Most Valuable Player), Carlos Henderson (2016 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year and Special Teams Player of the Year), Teddy Veal (2017 C-USA Newcomer of the Year), Jaylon Ferguson (2018 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year), J’Mar Smith (2019 C-USA Offensive Player of the Year) and Luke Anthony (2020 C-USA Newcomer of the Year). Holtz had spent the past three seasons as the head football coach at the University of South Florida. He also served as the head coach at the University of Connecticut and East Carolina University where he won back-to-back Conference USA titles with the Pirates in 2008 and 2009. He also led his teams to five consecutive post-season bowl games between 2006 and 2010. Holtz has participated in 22 postseason games in his coaching career, including 14 as a head coach and eight as an assistant coach. Of the 14 games as head coach, 12 occurred in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and two occurred in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Born March 12, 1964, in Willimantic, Connecticut, Louis “Skip” Holtz spent the first two years of his life in Connecticut, while his father served as the top football assistant on the Huskies’ staff from 1964-65. He was a prep quarterback at Fayetteville (Ark.) High School, while his father was the head coach at the University of Arkansas. He attended Holy Cross Junior College in South Bend, Ind., for two years before transferring to Notre Dame in 1984. Holtz earned his bachelor’s degree in business management in 1986 and was a football letterwinner for the Irish that same year, appearing in all 11 games as a special teams member and backup flanker. Skip and his wife, Jennifer, are the parents of three children: Louis Leo (Trey) Holtz III (currently on staff as the inside receivers coach), Chad Fitzgerald Holtz and Hailey Elizabeth Holtz.

MILTON |WILLIAMS| Surrounded by family and friends, Louisiana Tech defensive tackle Milton Williams saw his dream come true on Friday, April 30 as he was selected as the 73rd overall pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2021 NFL Draft. Williams became the 81st Bulldog selected in the NFL Draft in program history and was the highest LA Tech selection since Vernon Butler was the 30th overall pick in 2016. Williams was the second highest drafted Bulldog since Troy Edwards was selected 13th in the 1999 NFL Draft. Louisiana Tech has now had at least one Bulldog selected in each of the last six NFL Drafts and has had 11 total draft selections during that span. Williams, a 6-3, 285-pound defensive lineman, earned 2020 First Team All-C-USA honors by both the conference and Phil Steele, and was named a third team All-American by Pro Football Focus. In the 2020 season, the native of Crowley, Texas, ranked third in C-USA in tackles for loss with 10.0 and seventh in sacks with 4.5. Williams was fifth on the team in tackles with 44, including 21 solo. He had a season-high eight tackles and a career-high 3.0 TFLs against UAB on Oct. 31. Williams registered at least three tackles in every game of the 2020 campaign. He also posted two quarterback hurries and one fumble recovery during the season. During his LA Tech career, Williams registered 106 total tackles, including 49 solo, 19.0 for loss and 10.0 sacks. Of his 10.0 career sacks, nine were solo.

Dr. Les
GUICE university president @LKGuice Louisiana Tech University and President Les Guice share a rich history together that spans five decades and has produced family ties deeply rooted in a passion for the Bulldogs and Lady Techsters. From an architecture student stepping on the campus for the first time in 1972 to an appointment as Louisiana Tech’s 14th President in 2013, Dr. Guice has shown an unwavering commitment to leadership and service to his alma mater. Most recently, Guice’s leadership in promoting a spirit of teamwork has helped the campus community and the City of Ruston work together to overcome the enormous challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic that came on the heels of the tornado that plowed through the campus and community in April 2019. Yet unparalleled educational experiences and unparalleled campus growth have continued, including in the following areas: • The Integrated Engineering and Science Building (IESB) opened in Fall 2020; • The brand new Origin Bank Baseball Complex that houses J.C. Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, and the Origin Bank Softball and Soccer Complex, home to both Dr. Billy Bundrick Field (softball) and Robert Mack Caruthers Field (soccer) opened to rave reviews this year; • Green space, new intramural fields, and student housing along Tech Drive south of the railroad tracks neared completion as the Fall 2021 quarter began; • Plans are underway to build a much-needed Tech Pointe II; • Addition of new and/or improved parking lots north of the railroad tracks and west of Tech Drive, north of the railroad tracks and south of West Alabama Avenue, around the Business Building and the new dorms south of West California Avenue, and on the site of the old Business Building; • A renovation of the historical campus quadrangle and enhanced campus entrances; • Opening of the Hinckley Virtual Anatomy Lab; • And the ongoing demolition of old dorms along Tech Drive to make room for new housing are just some of the improvements.
One of Dr. Guice’s first achievements at Tech was earning a bachelor of arts in architecture in 1976. Discovering a passion for engineering under the mentorship of Professor Jack Painter, Dr. Guice went on to earn a master’s degree in civil engineering from Tech in 1978. While working on his master’s degree at Louisiana Tech, Dr. Guice also discovered a passion for teaching and education as a profession. Dr. Guice accepted a position as an assistant professor of civil engineering at Louisiana Tech in 1978 and was promoted to associate professor in 1981. A few short years after earning his PhD in civil engineering from Texas A&M University in 1986, Dr. Guice was named the interim department head of civil engineering in Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering in 1988 and earned the permanent department head position and full professorship in 1989. As department head, Dr. Guice initiated the formation of the Civil Engineering Advisory Board and the Civil Engineering Distinguished Alumni recognition program, both of which significantly enhanced alumni participation and significantly enhanced fundraising for the department. Throughout the next decade, Dr. Guice would continue to distinguish himself as an academician, researcher, administrator, and leader. His dedication to his students, his faculty, and the University would lead to his appointment as Dean of Louisiana Tech’s College of Engineering and Science (COES) in 1999. As Dean, Dr. Guice continued to encourage and support innovations in the curricula. The College’s faculty became increasingly successful in securing external funding for the integrated curriculum which resulted in a transformative redesign of programs throughout the College. Dr. Guice’s leadership and vision also reinvigorated the Engineering and Science Foundation to more effectively serve the needs of the College. He initiated a new integrated strategic plan, known as “COES 2010,” and capital campaign, “Tech’s BEST,” which led to major advancement of the college and to funding for an Eminent Scholar Chair, 15 Professorships, $500k Scholarship Fund, and several new laboratories and facilities. Dr. Guice’s leadership also helped to guide the Institute for Micromanufacturing (IfM) toward a focus on the emerging field of nanotechnology. With the hiring of key nanotechnology faculty in numerous disciplines, further expansion of research laboratories, establishment of an interdisciplinary engineering PhD program

with a nanotechnology track, and initiation of a BS in Nanosystems Engineering, the IfM and COES established strong research and education nanotechnology programs that have received national recognition. In 2004, Dr. Guice’s performance and accomplishments as dean led to his appointment as Tech’s vice president for research and development. During his tenure as vice president and, beginning in 2012, as executive vice president, Tech has significantly increased patents, licenses/options, startup companies, SBIR grants with affiliated companies, and has established strong industry partnerships for commercialization of technologies. Dr. Guice also led the establishment of Tech’s first two technology incubators, the Rawle and Humana Enterprise Centers. With a focus on the future and a progressive vision for economic development, Dr. Guice has led the planning and development of the Louisiana Tech Enterprise Campus – a research park connecting the university and downtown Ruston. Enterprise Campus’ first building, Tech Pointe, was completed in 2012 and is now home for several companies and organizations, including an Air Force-funded Cyberspace Research Laboratory. With the completion of Tech’s new College of Business building and renovation to University Hall as a home for interdisciplinary entrepreneurship and innovation activities, the first phase of Enterprise Campus was completed. Dr. Guice’s reputation for exemplary leadership and service is further evidenced

by the many statewide and Conference-USAwide organizations he has founded or chaired, and he’s been honored with numerous awards, both locally and statewide. He recently completed a two-year appointment as Chair of the C-USA Board of Directors. As Tech’s president, Dr. Guice is the chief executive officer of north Louisiana’s only Carnegie Foundation national research university and one of only two public universities from Louisiana recognized in the top tier of national universities in the U.S. News and World Report. Dr. Guice leads a University that consistently receives high marks in affordability, in starting salaries for graduates, and in providing graduates with the best returns on investment. Throughout his career, Dr. Guice has contributed to and played a central role in creating the culture and vision for the future of Louisiana Tech; he continues that commitment as president. Dr. Guice’s focus on campus-wide engagement, building and growing relationships, and leadership in forging a path toward advancement of the University’s academic and athletic programs, research and commercialization activities, and economic development efforts means that Louisiana Tech University’s best days are yet to come. Dr. Guice is a native of Monroe and grew up in Bastrop. He and his wife, Kathy, have three sons – Kyle, Chad, and Bret – and four grandchildren, Christopher, twins Everly and Elizabeth, and the youngest, Evie.

Dr. ERIC A.
WOOD DIRECTOR of ATHLETICS/VICE PRESIDENT @EWOOD_AD Culture. Class. Competitive Excellence. Those are the pillars that Dr. Eric A. Wood has embraced and vocalized since stepping on the Louisiana Tech University campus last October. Wood was introduced as Vice President and Director of Athletics by University President Les Guice during a press conference held in the Chris Richardson Suite of the Joe Aillet Stadium Press Box on Oct. 23, 2020. The energy, enthusiasm and electric personality of the 22-year veteran of collegiate athletic administration instantly hit home with the Tech student-athletes, coaches, support staff and fan base. Wood, who came to Ruston following a five-year stint at UCF where he spent the past four years as the Deputy AD for Competitive Excellence, is the first African-American Vice President and the first minority Director of Athletics in the University’s history. He also becomes the first Director of Athletics in LA Tech history to also serve as a Vice President. During the first nine months in his new role, Wood has quickly made a name for himself within the LA Tech Family as well as Conference USA, as illustrated by his appointment as Chair of the Football Success Committee and the league representative to the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee. Despite earning his first ever AD opportunity during one of the most trying times in collegiate athletic history, Wood’s leadership helped Louisiana Tech gain momentum – both on and off the playing fields. And no surprise. It’s all a part of Wood’s #CompeteCompeteCompete mantra. The 2020-21 academic year saw a number of impressive team accomplishments, including the seventh straight bowl appearance by Bulldog Football, the West Division championship and a run to the NIT Final Four by Bulldog Basketball, the first ever appearance in the National Collegiate Women’s Bowling Championship by the Lady Techsters, and a Top 25 ranking, West Division title and first ever host of an NCAA Regional by Bulldog Baseball. Those team accomplishments helped Louisiana Tech finish fifth among Conference USA schools in the Learfield Directors Cup and 16th nationally among universities sponsoring 16 sports.

Tech’s student-athletes also competed in the classroom. The past year saw 199 student-athletes named to the Conference USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll, the highest percentage ever. Another 54 were awarded the C-USA Academic Medal, the second most ever. Other impressive academic accomplishments included six Conference USA All-Academic Team honorees, nine CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees (the most in University history and the second most by a league school this year), and three CoSIDA Academic All-Americans (also a University single year record). On the fundraising front, the University saw a 60 percent growth in total gifts from the previous year ($5.1M to $8.1M) and a 23 percent growth in total donors. The Louisiana Tech Athletic Club (LTAC) saw a 19 percent growth in total donors, including a 100 percent participation by full-time athletic department employees (the first time ever on record). Tech also saw three seven-figure commitment made by individual donors on capital projects that support the Bulldog and Lady Techster student-athletes. The University also opened brand new facilities in JC Love Field at Pat Patterson Park, Dr. Billy Bundrick Softball Field, Robert Mack Caruthers Soccer Field, Origin Bank Soccer and Softball Complex, and additional support facilities that totaled in excess of $40 million in new athletics facility construction. The athletics department also saw some international publicity with Conference USA Freshman of the Year Kenneth Lofton, Jr. leading Team USA to the gold medal at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup in Latvia. All of these momentum-building moments in 2020-21 led to impressive social media growth within the department, including a 22 percent increase in followers across all social media platforms. The official athletics website LATechSports.com saw 2.65 million pageviews, an increase in excess of 25 percent from the previous year, and also saw over 650,000 users, a 35 percent growth over the previous 12 months. All of these accomplishments were just signs of culture, class and competitive excellence. The Bronx, New York, native has served in a variety of roles within athletics administration for more than two decades. In addition to his time at UCF, Wood has held full-time positions at the University of Arkansas, the Atlantic Coast Conference, Wake Forest University and the University of New Haven. He also served as a postgraduate intern at the NCAA national office and a graduate assistant at Clemson University early in his career.

He represented the department on the President’s Advisory Staff Council and served as sport administrator for the football and men’s basketball programs. Wood had administrative oversight of the Varsity Knights alumni letterwinners organization, UCF Convocation Corporation management and revenue generation, Knights Sports Performance, the sport administrators group, the sports science and sports nutrition departments, compliance, academics and all internal units impacting the competitive success of UCF’s 450 studentathletes. During his time in Fayetteville, Wood served as the Associate Athletics Director, Deputy Title IX Coordinator/Diversity Coordinator (2011-16) as well as the Assistant Athletics Director for Student-Athlete Development (2009-11). He is a 1998 graduate of Sacred Heart University, earning his degree in Psychology. He was a three-year starter at cornerback for the Pioneer football team with one outdoor season as a member of the track and field team. Wood earned a Medal of Merit, the athletic department’s highest honor, as the StudentAthlete of the Year his senior year at Sacred Heart. He completed his master’s degree in counseling and guidance services at Clemson University in May 2000 and his Doctorate of Education in Sports Management at the University of Arkansas in 2016. FAREWELL
DAVE NITZ |DAVE| Dave Nitz, Voice of the Bulldogs for nearly half a century, announced this past spring that he was retiring from calling Louisiana Tech football and basketball games starting with the upcoming 2021-22 athletics season. Labeled “Freeway Dave” by Tech Hall of Famer Leon Barmore in the late 1970s because of his love of the road, Nitz recently completed his 47th Bulldog Football and Dunkin’ Dogs seasons. He has decided to concentrate on baseball only as he heads into his 48th season as the Voice of the Diamond Dogs. “This is my 47th year doing all three sports, and I think it’s time for me to slow down a little bit,” said Nitz. “I have enjoyed the run and as most people know baseball is my favorite sport. I really enjoy calling it, and I am looking forward to doing baseball only. I am sure it will be a challenge come this fall when I’m not doing a football game on a Saturday. But at some point in time, it’s better to ease out than to stop completely. I am not going away. I’m just going in a different direction.” No one has done college baseball play-by-play for one team longer than Nitz; his first Tech broadcast was in Spring 1974 at old Arlington Stadium as Pat “Gravy” Patterson and the Bulldogs baseball team came one game short of going to the College World Series. “Dave Nitz joined Louisiana Tech when I was a sophomore in college, and he’s been the voice of Louisiana Tech Athletics for 48 years,” said University President Les Guice. “I cannot remember a time when his voice wasn’t on the radio, telling me the plays and scores for my Bulldogs and Lady Techsters. He is an
48
expert broadcaster. We’ll miss his voice in football and basketball, but I’m glad Dave will still be with us and the Diamond Dogs.” During a broadcasting career that has spanned nearly 60 years, Nitz has called more than 4,000 Tech games, which includes eight seasons of Lady Techsters basketball, beginning in the late-1970s. Besides serving as Voice of the Bulldogs, he spent 36 summers broadcasting professional baseball and also spent time as an assistant sports information director for Tech in the 1970s and 1980s. A native of Milton, West Virginia, Nitz, 78, is a member of the LA Tech Athletics Hall of Fame Class of 2010 and the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2019. He was named the 2009 Louisiana Sportscaster of the Year and been voted as the College Broadcaster of the Year in the state numerous times by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. “Dave Nitz has been the voice behind the mic for Louisiana Tech fans for almost five decades,” said Louisiana Tech VP and Director of Athletics Eric Wood. “His voice and his name are synonymous with so many of our athletic teams and resonate with our fans. We are so appreciative to him for his dedication and loyalty to our University and we fully support Dave’s decision to focus on baseball. I think our fans will appreciate the opportunity to still hear him in the springs as he calls the Diamond Dog games.”

welcome to the new
|VOICE OF THE BULLDOGS| The new Voice of the Bulldogs has a familiar tone. Malcolm Butler, for 22 years a member of the Louisiana Tech Athletics Department and the University’s senior associate athletic director in charge of athletic communications, will take on a hybrid role. One of his roles will be serving as the play-by-play voice for Bulldog Football and Men’s Basketball. “Our goal was to find someone who would show the same loyalty and passion for Louisiana Tech athletics as Dave Nitz; a voice that would resonate with our fan base,” said Louisiana Tech VP and Director of Athletics Eric Wood. “As we began the process, the opportunity presented itself to make the move from within. Malcolm has spent more than two decades of his career providing passionate calls for so many of our programs, extensively with our women’s basketball and softball teams. And I am excited about his desire to transition to being the voice for Bulldog Football and Basketball.” Butler takes over Tech’s mic for Louisiana Sports and Louisiana Tech Hall of Famer Dave Nitz, who recently decided to call only Bulldog Baseball games after nearly half a century as the voice of Tech Athletics. “Malcolm has served our University with true blue loyalty for two decades,” said Dr. Les Guice, President of Louisiana Tech. “His exceptional knowledge and passion for our Bulldogs and Lady Techsters has always shown in his work, and now all our Tech fans will have the chance to know him better through the LA Tech Athletics broadcasts.” Butler’s new title is Associate AD for Communications and Broadcasting. He will continue to be a member of Wood’s executive team, maintain oversight of the athletic communications department, and sports supervision for softball as well as a variety of new responsibilities. “I am excited about this opportunity, and I appreciate (Tech President) Dr. (Les) Guice and Dr. Wood for their confidence in me,” Butler said. “Dave is a legend, and I am fortunate to have worked alongside of him for more than two decades. This will provide a new challenge for me as I move into a bit of a hybrid role
within the department. There are many moving parts to this transition, which will ultimately strengthen the overall communications department.” Butler joined the department in July 1999 as the assistant athletic communications director before being elevated to the director’s position that same fall. He was promoted to his current position in 2008 and has served as a member of the athletic department’s senior staff over the past 13 years. As the radio play-by-play voice for the Lady Techster basketball team, the Ruston native has broadcast more than 600 women’s basketball games, including 15 NCAA Tournament games. He was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association (LSWA) State College Radio Broadcaster of the Year in 2017 and has placed in the top three in the contest six of the last eight years. He has broadcast in excess of 500 softball games in his career, including the 2008, 2017 and 2019 NCAA Regionals, and served as both the play-by-play voice and color commentator on various Bulldog football and basketball broadcasts. He served as the sideline reporter for the Bulldog football broadcasts from 201316. A 1994 Tech journalism graduate, Butler served as the sports editor and editor of The Tech Talk, the University’s student newspaper. Louisiana Tech fans can tune into Malcolm Butler and Teddy Allen on the LA Tech Sports Network this fall for all live game broadcasts for the Bulldogs’ 12-game schedule as well as the weekly Inside Tech Football with head coach Skip Holtz. For the 24th straight year, the LA Tech Sports Network will team up with KXKZ-FM (107.5) Ruston as the flagship station for Tech Athletics. Fans can also access all live audio through the Louisiana Tech Athletics mobile app, which is available for download on the iTunes App Store or Google Play. The LA Tech Sports Network team will host a 90-minute pre-game show prior to each kickoff and a 30-minute post-game show.

A LEGACY OF
DETERMINATION
On game day, each player touches it. The small, bronze Bulldog commemorates the
1988 football team that faced a grueling schedule with only 65 scholarship players –
paving the program’s way into Division I-A. Every great tradition has an Origin story,
and Origin Bank is proud to support all that makes Louisiana Tech athletics so unique.
