BRIAN JOHNSON
DIRECTOR OF TRACK & FIELD
@BJohnsonoly
Louisiana Tech VP and Director of Athletics Eric Wood announced the hiring of Olympian and four-time NCAA Division I national champion Brian Johnson as its Director of Track and Field and Cross Country.
Completing his fifth year as the Director of Track and Field and Cross Country at New Orleans, Johnson’s squad this year boasted the 47th ranked men’s track and field program, a 5th ranked men’s 100m event group and sprinter Ismael Kone who recorded back-to-back appearances in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships.
“We always talk about competitive excellence as part of our mantra within our athletics department, and we have hired a competitor in Brian Johnson,” said Tech VP and Director of Athletics Eric Wood. “Brian has excelled at the highest level of his profession both as an Olympian and a national champion. He has competed against the best the world has to offer.
“Brian has proven in his coaching career that he can develop student-athletes into national championship caliber competitors. We are excited about Brian taking the reigns of our track and field program and leading it back to a championship level.”
Johnson comes to Tech from the University of New Orleans where he has led the Privateers track & field and cross country programs since the fall of 2018. He takes over the reins after 40-year veteran Gary Stanley retired at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.
“This is an amazing moment for me in a lot of ways, and I am honored to become the new head track and field coach for Louisiana Tech,” said Johnson. “First, I’d like to thank Dr. Eric Wood and Tim Padgett for giving me this opportunity. I look forward to working with the entire athletic department and the track and field student athletes.”
During his collegiate career at Southern in Baton Rouge, Johnson – who was a member of the 2008 United States Olympic Track & Field team that competed in Beijing, China – became only the third Jaguars athlete to win an indoor NCAA Division I national title when he captured the long jump crown in 2003 with a best leap of 8.28m (27-2).
Johnson finished fourth at the U.S. Indoor Championships in 2004 and then captured gold with a first-place finish the following year at the 2005 Indoor Championships. He also won U.S. titles with his victories at both the 2006 Indoor and Outdoor Championships with jumps of 7.95m (26-1) and 8.10m (26-7), respectively.
In 2008, he finished second at the Olympic Trails in Eugene, Oregon, which qualified him for the national team. He went on to finish 22nd overall at the 2008 Olympics.
Also during that time, Johnson posted a personal best of 8.33m with his second-place performance at the Fort-de-France international meet and he also won a silver medal at the IAAF World Athletics Final.
During his coaching career in the Big Easy, Johnson guided both the men’s and women’s cross country and men’s and women’s track & field programs to record-setting performances at the Southland Conference Championships. All six teams have set a team point total record since joining the conference at their respective championship meet.
“I would like to thank Tim Duncan and Dr. John Nicklow for entrusting me with the University of New Orleans Track and Field program,” said Johnson. “I am forever grateful for the opportunity and the experience. I would like to thank all the athletes I had the opportunity to coach. We had some great moments in these last four years, and I wish them continued success.”Most recently, Kone competed in the 2022 NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the 100m and the 200m. Kone, who was the Southland Conference Track and Field Athlete of the Year, was the first standout in UNO track and field history to advance to two straight NCAA Outdoor Championships and the only Privateer to ever compete in two events in nationals.
Johnson has also helped in the mentoring of Arina Kleshchukova, who was the first athlete in school history to advance to the NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championships in 2019.
Kleshchukova won four of her first five races in 2019, including winning the Southland title to advance to the South Central Regionals. There she placed tenth overall to earn All-Region honors and a chance to advance to NCAAs. Kleshchukova earned numerous awards including Southland Women’s Runner of the Year and Louisiana Runner of the Year by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
In total, the Privateers claimed three Southland titles, nine silver and four bronze medals across the indoor and outdoor conference championships in 2021. New Orleans also sent a school-record four student-athletes to the NCAA DI East Preliminary Round.
Both his men’s and women’s cross country and women’s cross country program have also been honored numerous times as U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic teams.
The Iowa, Louisiana, native has been in the coaching ranks since 2003 and stopped competition following the 2010 season. He was ranked as high as No. 2 in the United States in the long jump by Track & Field News following his 2008 campaign and ended as the No. 3 ranked athlete in the event in 2010. Johnson was ranked in the top-10 in the world in his event every year between 2005-10.
“I would like to thank my family, my children, and all of my close friends who have been there every step of the way in this process,” said Johnson.
Johnson has had coaching stops at Southern, Alcorn State and the University of Georgia. He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in political studies from Southern in 2003.
GEORGE CLEARE
ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH (SPRINTS & JUMPS)
Louisiana Tech Director of Track and Field Brian Johnson announced the addition of George Cleare as associate head coach specializing in jumps and sprints.
Cleare brings to Ruston a wealth of national and international coaching experience during his time at Texas Southern University and the University of Georgia as well as World Championships and Olympics head coach for his native country, the Bahamas.
Most recently, Cleare spent the last five years as an assistant coach for the men’s track and field program at Texas Southern, helping guide the Tigers to runnerup finishes at the SWAC Outdoor and Indoor Championships in 2022. He coached three individual SWAC champions at TSU, Roman Turner (60m), Chadwick Williams (javelin), and Hezekiah Freeman (outdoor shot put).
Prior to TSU, Cleare spent 2010-2015 at Georgia where he coached two SEC Champions in Chanice Porter (indoor long jump) and Saniel Atkinson-Grier (outdoor high jump), six first-team All-American selections, and the NCAA 400m indoor champion, Shaunae Miller, while also breaking two school records in the women’s indoor and outdoor 400m.
Cleare was instrumental in the Lady Bulldogs signing the fourth highest ranked recruiting class following the 2012-13 season, the best ranking in program history.
On the international level, Cleare served as the Bahamas’ head coach during the 2013 World Championships in Moscow and the 2016 Olympics in Rio. In 2013, the Bahamas recorded 11 World Champion qualifiers earning five medals.
Cleare has also developed 10 Olympians, including six competing at the 2016 Rio games, highlighted by Steven Gardiner winning a Silver Medal in the men’s 4x400m relay.
Cleare also worked with postgraduate Chris Carter on his way to the 2018 USA indoor national championship in the triple jump (17.20m) and a fifth-place finish at the 2018 International Association of Athletics FederationsWorld Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala. (17.15m).
Clear also served as the Bahamas 2009 World Championships Relay Coordinator where his 4x100m relay team won a silver medal.
In addition to coaching, Cleare has been an IAAF Level 1 Lecturer for coach education since 2009.
Cleare graduated with a bachelor of science degree in business administration from Galilee College in Nassau, the Bahamas in 2009 and earned a master of science degree in health and kinesiology from Texas Southern in 2018.
Cleare is currently pursuing his Ed.D. in education administration and supervision from Texas Southern.
JOSEPH BLUE
ASSISTANT COACH (THROWS)
Joseph Blue joined the Louisiana Tech track & field staff in August 2024 and will oversee the throws after speding the past two season at California State University Northridge in the same capacity.
During his two seasons at CSUN, Blue coached 15 Big West All-Conference performers and the 2024 conference champion in the women’s shot put while also coaching the 2024 conference women’s discus runner-up.
A 2015 CSUN graduate, Blue returned to Northridge from Cal Poly Pomona, where he spent six seasons mentoring the Bronco throwers. In 2022, Cal Poly Pomona accounted for 77 points and produced conference champions in the men’s shot put and the men’s discus at the CCAA Championship as the Broncos won the men’s CCAA title for the first time since 1998.
The Cal Poly Pomona women’s throwers scored 61 points, while Ana Tovi won the CCAA title in the discus and shot put as the Broncos’ women won their first league title in 24 years. Tovi earned second-team Division II All-American honors in the discus and placed 13th in the shot put.
In 2019, Blue helped Tovi break a 31-year-old school record in the discus, finishing 14th at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, and eighth at the USATF U-20 Championship. 2019, Blue also guided Aaron Guerra to third at the CCAA’s and earned USTFCCA All-West Region honors.
In Blue’s first year (2018), he led Jenna Gonzales to an NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of 45.89 meters, currently sixth in school history. Collectively, between the men’s and women’s teams, the Broncos earned six All-CCAA honors at the 2018 CCAA Championships to finish the year.
Before arriving at CPP, Blue spent two seasons at Southern Arkansas University. In 2016, Blue made an immediate impact with the SAU track and field throws, multis, and high jumpers. Freshman Sinclair Pitts earned First Team All-GAC in the Hammer throw with a third-place Conference finish at the 2016 Great America Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Freshmen Anna Murphy and Chioma Akolam placed second and third in discus at the 2016 Great America Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Also, Blue coached Erica Fuller to a first-place Great American Conference Title in the Hammer Throw in 2017. In total, Blue has coached 16 Men All-GAC Honors 2016-2017 seasons, 19 Women All-GACHonors 2016-2017 seasons, one GAC Champion (Women’s Hammer), two GAC Athlete of Week Honorees, and six school records were broken.
Blue competed for CSUN from 2014-15, recording a best of 53-8 1/2 in the shot and 141-8 in the discus. He qualified for the Big West Championship in both seasons, finishing 13th in the shot as a senior. Blue began his collegiate career at Fresno State, where he placed sixth in the discus at the 2012 WAC Outdoor Championship and eighth in the shot at the 2013 Mountain West Outdoor Championship.
Since graduating from CSUN with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications, Blue earned his master’s in College Counseling and Student Affairs.
JIM MIZE
TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX
Areal legend in Tech history, Coach Mize first came to Tech as an athlete out of Shreveport Fair Park and later returned as a coach to produce one of the largest running success stories ever for the Bulldogs. Coaching football alongside Joe Aillet and Maxie Lambright for 24 years, Mize also built a very consistent track program through 1977. He won conference championships in 1961, 1973 and 1974 and always had competitive teams.

JIM MIZE TRACK & FIELD COMPLEX
Starting with the 2009 season, Louisiana Tech’s championship track and field programs had a state-of-the-art facility to call home. In the spring of 2019, the track received another facelift in the form of a resurfacing that was completed just in time for the outdoor season.
For decades the programs had overcome an outdated facility adjacent to Joe Aillet Stadium on Louisiana Tech’s campus, still managing to win several championships. That all changed in March 2008 when construction began on a new facility.
Since the sport of track has changed drastically from the time the old track at Tech was constructed in the 1970s, several updates were needed. Furthermore, because the new track was being built in the same area as the previous one, the old track needed to be completely removed. Not that the old facility didn’t enjoy its time in the sun; on the contrary, it hosted the three Southland Conference Championships as well as the 1991 American South Conference Championships.
One of the many upgrades with the new track is a practice field in the middle, which can be used for soccer and football. To accommodate the need, the new track needed to be wider than the previous one.
“The new facility allows us to practice better and more efficiently,” Tech head men’s and women’s track coach Gary Stanley said. “It also contains several throwing and jumping areas so our teams can practice at the same time.”
Completed in August 2008, the new Jim Mize Track and Field Complex includes a modern drainage system, a much bigger high jump apron and a new location for the steeplechase course. Previously on the outside of the track, the steeplechase pit has been moved on the inside, similar with most tracks.
The updated facility allowed Louisiana Tech to host the 2010 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships where the Lady Techsters won their seventh consecutive outdoor title and their 11th WAC title in 12 tries.
Head coach Gary Stanley believes the new tartan surface track will not only benefit his teams physically, but psychologically.
“The facility benefits us after we come home from a meet,” Stanley said. “Now, we know we are coming home to a facility that is on par with the facilities we typically see.”
The new facility also contains the resources needed to adapt to changes in the wind. For instance, if wind is present, the javelin, discus and shot put events can occur from two different areas. For runners, the starting blocks can be moved depending on the direction of the wind as well.
“Without a doubt, the new track facility will make a difference with recruits,” Stanley said. “We now have a first class facility for our athletes who are getting a first class education and that is something we really stress in our program.”
Along with the new track is a new sand volleyball court located on the north end of the track. Like the new track, the volleyball court can also be illuminated. The court will be used for intramural sand volleyball and as a training tool for the football team.
On Nov. 1, 2008, Tech President Dr. Dan Reneau announced that the track facility would once again be named the Jim Mize Track and Field Complex.
Mize attended Tech as an athlete from Fair Park High School in Shreveport, La. and later came back to the university as a coach. He coached football alongside Aillet and Maxie Lambright for 24 years. During his time at Tech, Mize also built a consistent track program. As a track coach, he won conference championships in 1961, 1973 and 1974.

DR. JIM HENDERSON
UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
@DrJBHenderson
Dr. Jim Henderson became the 15th president of Louisiana Tech University on Jan. 1, 2024. His ties to the institution go back more than 80 years when his father, Clem Henderson, was recruited to play for famed Louisiana Tech football coach, Joe Aillet. His mom, Martha, was a two-time Tech grad.
Henderson previously served as the president and CEO of the University of Louisiana System, one of the nation’s largest University systems. As the longestserving UL System president, he led the Universities of Louisiana in the creation of a strategic framework that charged its member institutions to produce the most educated generation in Louisiana’s history. Through various Systemic initiatives such as Compete LA, the Reginald F. Lewis Scholars, and the challenges associated with a global pandemic and fiscal uncertainty, he developed a notion of System that will continue to benefit each of the nine institutions for decades to come.
Henderson also served as president of his alma mater, Northwestern State University, where he reinvigorated student life and campus culture leading to the highest enrollment in the school’s 135-year history. Before taking the helm of NSU, Henderson served as chancellor of Bossier Parish Community College. During his tenure, the institution ranked among the five fastest growing colleges in the nation for five consecutive years.
In 2012, Henderson was named a Northwest Louisiana Business Hall of Fame Laureate and in 2017 he was inducted into Northwestern State University’s hall of honor, the Long Purple Line. Henderson holds a master of science in administration from University of West Florida and a doctor of management from University of Maryland—University College. In 2010, he completed the Institute of Educational Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Visitors of the Marine Corps University.
The smartest decision Henderson has made is marrying his college sweetheart,
Tonia who founded her own media company after a successful career in advertising. The Hendersons have three children, Reagan, Nicholas, and Alexander who is majoring in chemical engineering at Louisiana Tech; and four grandchildren, Zachary, Miguel, Maria, and Lucille.
RYAN IVEY
VICE PRESIDENT & DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS
@rivey35
Louisiana Tech University President Dr. Jim Henderson introduced Ryan Ivey as Vice President and Director of Athletics in front of a packed Club Level at the Davison Athletics Complex.
Ivey comes to Ruston with more than 18+ years of experience in intercollegiate athletics with the past 11 as an athletics director at Stephen F. Austin, Austin Peay, and Texas A&M-Commerce.
“The Louisiana Tech athletics brand is synonymous with excellence. When you think about the student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and teams that have called this University home, it is really astounding. We have an opportunity to build upon, grow and establish future success,” Ivey said. “Our goal will be to build a nationally prominent athletics department with individuals that excel in everything that we do. We will be relentless in our pursuit of excellence, respecting those that have come before us, but building and charting our own path and successes.
