COACHING STAFF
Head Coach Amy Sargeant (Florida State, ‘13) Record at School 15-9 (2nd year)
Situated next to Joe Aillet Stadium and the Jim Mize Track and Field Complex are eight lighted tennis courts that make up the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.
Construction on the facility began in March 2008 and concluded five months later in August. Then on Oct. 15, 2008 as part of the fall schedule, the women’s tennis team played and swept Grambling State in their inaugural match at the new facility. A dedication ceremony took place two weeks later as then Tech President Dr. Dan Reneau officially announced it as the Louisiana Tech Tennis Complex.
In the early hours of April 25, 2019, an EF3 tornado struck the Louisiana Tech campus and delivered almost complete devastation to the tennis complex. Almost a year later on April 22, 2020, work began on repairing the complex and was completed in late July with the resurfacing of the courts, new fencing and new LED lights.
The facility has seen more upgrades recently with the addition of new windscreens/banners as well as a camera streaming system installed.
In 15 spring seasons at the LA Tech Tennis Complex, the Bulldogs have tallied an all-time spring dual record of 88-31 at their home courts (the 2020 dual season was played at the Ruston Sports Complex). The team has had a winning home record in 13 straight spring seasons, including undefeated home seasons in 2014 and 2017.
The program played a school record 15 home matches during the 2022 spring season, registering a 13-2 record. During the season, they also set a new school record with 12 straight home victories (April 13, 2021 - March 19, 2022). The record was set on Feb. 28 with a 4-2 victory over Tarleton State. That record did not last very long as the Bulldogs reeled off 13 straight (April 3, 2022 - April 13, 2023), winning the 13th match against Grambling State which was part of an 11-1 home record during the 2023 spring season.
The LA Tech Tennis Complex has seen the Bulldogs host its first-ever conference match on April 8, 2010 against Hawai’i. They then notched their first-ever conference win at the facility a few days later on April 10 against San Jose State. Another highlight moment came on April 5, 2016 when they played their first ever home match as a nationally-ranked team (No. 73).
AMY SARGEANT HEAD
COACH
@CoachSargeant_
The “Sarge Effect” was on full display as head coach Amy Sargeant wrapped up year one at the helm of the Louisiana Tech women’s tennis program.
Sargeant guided the Bulldogs to a 15-win season in 2024, tied for the third most wins by a first-year head coach in program history. One of those was a 4-2 win at Houston, which marked the program’s first ever victory over a Big 12 opponent. The team finished ranked No. 9 in the ITA Collegiate Women’s Tennis southern regional rankings.
She coached four Bulldogs -- Olga Bienzobas, Tiffani Nash, Alexia Romero, and Zoie Epps -- that ended up earning All-Conference USA honors, tying for the most in school history. Four Bulldogs also received CUSA Athlete of the Week honors throughout the spring, the most ever in a single season.
Bienzobas, Nash, and Romero each tallied 15+ dual singles wins, a first in the program’s history since 1982. The trio ranked in the top five in CUSA in singles wins while Bienzobas registered a 19-3 record, the most by anyone in the league and tied for the second most in program history. She went on to become the first player in program history to be named the LSWA Louisiana Player of the Year.
Sargeant came to Ruston following a decade-long coaching career with stints at her alma mater Florida State as well as New Mexico, Oklahoma, and most recently Clemson where she also served as interim head coach in 2023, guiding the Tigers to one of their most successful seasons on the courts in recent years.
After spending two seasons at Clemson as an assistant coach, Sargeant was named interim head coach on Nov. 17, 2022, immediately established a winning culture that garnered results.
The Tigers ended up recording a 16-12 overall mark, the most wins since 2015. Included in that was an 11-1 start to the spring dual season, the best start since 1986, with one of those victories coming against rival South Carolina, the first such win in eight years. Clemson was consistently ranked in the top 45, peaking as high as No. 29 (highest since 2018).
The team experienced improvement in her first two seasons on staff, helping the Tigers to a 13-13 record in 2022 and sending the doubles pair of Samantha Buyckx and Ali DeSpain to the NCAA Doubles Championship Tournament. The pair earned their first ranked wins and first top-25 victory in 2022, as well as their first ACC Tournament match victory, a 4-3 thriller over Virginia Tech.
Prior to heading to the Palmetto State, Sargeant was an assistant coach at Oklahoma for four seasons (2016-20). The Sooners improved year after year with her on staff, peaking in 2019 when OU went 17-9 and earned a bid to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015, making it to the Round of 32.
Sargeant was named ITA Central Region Assistant Coach of the Year after helping coach four All-Big 12 selections (most in program history at the time), including Big 12 Newcomer of the Year Oleksandra Korashvili.
She was selected as one of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Summer Collegiate Coaches for the 2019 season, working with the USTA’s top collegiate players as they compete at 25k pro events)
She made the move to Norman, Oklahoma from Albuquerque, New Mexico where she was an assistant coach for the Lobos for one season (2015-16). In that one season, Sargeant helped UNM to a 15-7 record and a perfect 5-0 mark in the Mountain West Conference, earning the No. 2 seed in the MWC Championship where they advanced to the semifinals.
She coached three All-Mountain West Conference selections while helping Lobos reach as high as No. 48 in the country.
Sargeant’s collegiate coaching career got its start at Florida State where she spent two seasons (2013-15) as a volunteer assisting with practices and coordinating player strategies and individualized drills while pursuing her master’s degree.
This came following a four-year playing career (2009-13) with the Seminoles, helping FSU to four straight NCAA Tournaments as well as two runner-up finishes in the ACC Championship.
Sargeant earned Team MVP honors in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and served as a two-time co-captain. As a senior, she became just the fifth player in FSU history to record 30 singles wins in a single season. Her .811 winning percentage ranked as the second-best mark in FSU single-season history.
She also had a stint on the professional ITF circuit, winning the ITA Regional Playoff for the 2013 US Open and competing in the French National League for Club Moulin Les Metz.
Sargeant, a native of Walsall, England, earned both her bachelor’s (Sport Management, 2013) and master’s (Sport Management and Administration, 2015) from Florida State.
CARLOTTA
ROMITO
ASSISTANT COACH
2025 SUPPORT STAFF
Louisiana Tech Tennis head coach Amy Sargeant announced the hiring of Carlotta Romito as the new assistant coach for the Bulldogs.
Romito, a native of Verona, Italy, spent this past season as an assistant coach at Lamar University where she helped the Cardinals to a 9-win season with marquee victories over Sam Houston, Southern Miss, and North Dakota.
“I could not be more excited to add Carlotta to the Bulldog family,” said Sargeant who enters her second season at the helm. “After a long search and a quality list of references, Carlotta fit the bill of what I look for in a coach.
“She has a solid playing background, is extremely motivated, and has a love for developing players both on and off the court. I cannot wait for our team to be united and hit the ground running.”
Prior to joining Lamar, Romito was a youth tennis coach and manager in 202223 at the Tennis Academy of San Mateo, California.
She played collegiately in Lake Charles, Louisiana at McNeese State where she spent the majority of the time at the top two positions in both singles and doubles. Her standout season came as a freshman when she went 12-7 in singles, highlighted by wins against Tulane, South Alabama, UL-Lafayette, and UTSA. She also registered a career-high six victories in dual doubles.
“I am thrilled and honored to join the Louisiana Tech family,” said Romito. “Having lived in Louisiana for four years, I have experienced firsthand the unique spirit, resilience, and passion that define this state.
“I chose Louisiana Tech because of its commitment to excellence, the incredible sense of community that permeates the program, the dedication of the athletes and staff, and the university’s values aligning perfectly with my own. I am eager to bring my experience and passion to this program and contribute to our collective success.” Romito, who is fluent in three languages (English, Spanish, and Italian), graduated from McNeese with summa cum laude honors, earning a bachelor’s degree in health and human performance with a concentration in sports management.

MISSION = Advance the LA Tech Athletics brand with your Time and Talent
TIME
You can simply spend time consuming our content. Attend or stream our live events, listen to our radio broadcasts, follow and engage on social media, read and share our team’s and student-athlete’s stories, proudly wear your Bulldog and Lady Techster gear, display our infamous logos.
TALENT

DR. JIM HENDERSON
UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT
@DrJBHenderson
Dr. Jim Henderson became the 15th president of Louisiana Tech University on Jan. 1, 2024. His ties to the institution go back more than 80 years when his father, Clem Henderson, was recruited to play for famed Louisiana Tech football coach, Joe Aillet. His mom, Martha, was a two-time Tech grad.
Henderson previously served as the president and CEO of the University of Louisiana System, one of the nation’s largest University systems. As the longestserving UL System president, he led the Universities of Louisiana in the creation of a strategic framework that charged its member institutions to produce the most educated generation in Louisiana’s history. Through various Systemic initiatives such as Compete LA, the Reginald F. Lewis Scholars, and the challenges associated with a global pandemic and fiscal uncertainty, he developed a notion of System that will continue to benefit each of the nine institutions for decades to come.
Henderson also served as president of his alma mater, Northwestern State University, where he reinvigorated student life and campus culture leading to the highest enrollment in the school’s 135-year history. Before taking the helm of NSU, Henderson served as chancellor of Bossier Parish Community College. During his tenure, the institution ranked among the five fastest growing colleges in the nation for five consecutive years.
In 2012, Henderson was named a Northwest Louisiana Business Hall of Fame Laureate and in 2017 he was inducted into Northwestern State University’s hall of honor, the Long Purple Line. Henderson holds a master of science in administration from University of West Florida and a doctor of management from University of Maryland—University College. In 2010, he completed the Institute of Educational Management at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He currently serves as the Chair of the Board of Visitors of the Marine Corps University.
The smartest decision Henderson has made is marrying his college sweetheart,
Tonia who founded her own media company after a successful career in advertising. The Hendersons have three children, Reagan, Nicholas, and Alexander who is majoring in chemical engineering at Louisiana Tech; and four grandchildren, Zachary, Miguel, Maria, and Lucille.

“The Louisiana Tech athletics brand is synonymous with excellence. When you think about the student-athletes, coaches, administrators, and teams that have called this University home, it is really astounding. We have an opportunity to build upon, grow and establish future success,” Ivey said. “Our goal will be to build a nationally prominent athletics department with individuals that excel in everything that we do. We will be relentless in our pursuit of excellence, respecting those that have come before us, but building and charting our own path and successes. Now is the time to be part of this amazing University and department!”
He spent more than five years in Nacogdoches, Texas at SFA, leading the department through a conference transition from the Southland Conference to the Western Athletic Conference, raising private support that included the launch of the Purple Lights Fund that helped secure the four largest single gifts in the department’s history, and increasing ticket sales by 189 percent.
He also helped complete more than $30 million in facility improvements including the Loddie Naymola Basketball Performance Center, a 42,000-square foot building that houses offices, locker rooms, weight room, training room, and practice courts for the SFA basketball programs. Other construction improvements included a baseball indoor pitching facility, beach volleyball competition facility, indoor golf practice facility, soccer locker room renovations, and more.

He also created the Lions Athletic Club, the fundraising arm of Texas A&M-Commerce Athletics.
Ivey’s first work experience in the state of Louisiana came at McNeese where he assumed the role of assistant athletic director for internal affairs with his efforts primarily focused on growing corporate sponsorship revenue for the Cowboys and Cowgirls.
